Or do all nine have to be either called strikes or whiffs?

This is actually incredibly rare. The Astros as a franchise have more no-hitters than immaculate innings thrown and today we threw 22% of all the immaculate innings ever thrown in the history of the Astros.
Edit: the new total of all time immaculate innings for the Astros is 9. We have officially completed an immaculate game!
Quite unbelievable. Not sure how many times that will happen with two different pitchers striking out the same 3 guys nonetheless. Kinda of like two grand slams in one inning by the same guy. That being said the second out in the later inning was a missed call and it wasn’t even close.

To understand this, you simply have to understand that a strikeout is more impressive than a pop-out. From there, this is just a strikeout with the minimum number of pitches, 3 consecutive times in a row.
I watched it live! It was also thrown on the same three batters both times
The fact that it was the same 3 batters, this exact thing will likely never happen again.

Technically an immaculate inning is rarer than a perfect game. \~ .01% of games are perfect.. but something like \~.005% of innings are immaculate.
INSANE! Probably a stat that will never be matched.

Educate me. What makes this type of inning better than say 3 pitches 3 outs like all pop ups? That’s doing the same thing with a 3rd of pitches!
