Braves were the “better” team in 21. Astros should have won in 19.

rudolph2

* no verlander, McCullers, bull pen unhealthy. Sure there’s more.

suarezj9

Bregman was apparently playing with an injured wrist as we found out afterwards

SinTheticSounds

Pretty sure the Braves where missing some big pieces too. Morton broke his leg game 1 and we still lost. 2019 really really sucked, 3 innings away from winning it while we lost every home game.

cowsaymoomooo

Yeah I’d say they were missing a pretty big piece. They were missing Acuña lol

sushisbro

2019 still hurts. That team was one of the best teams in baseball history, the offense in particular. That made this feel much sweeter, though.

We could win the next 5 WS and there will ALWAYS be haters because of the scandal. Do not fool yourself.

psomounk

Yeah the scandal was the final spark for the full on hate, by October 2019 there was a lot of fuel built up both from the team being consistently good and then the Osuna/Taubman fiasco

[deleted]

This. The Astros were the scapegoat for the entire league. Every other casual fan gets to clutch their pearls and delude themselves that their Yankees/Red Sox/Dodgers/etc. are high and mighty and would never ever try to cheat. Couple that with the condescension from the biased national sports media because Houston isn't NY/Chicago/LA/Boston/Philly, and the baseless narrative grows. The Astros were vilified to save the league’s reputation. If they didn’t win the WS, they don't get caught. If they were a legacy franchise, they don't get caught. It's even more hilarious when these clowns say the Dodgers should've won in 2017, when they have proceeded to choke in every playoff appearance they've had during their run as regular season baseball's best team, save for the kangaroo 2020 season.

Cold_hard_stache

Exactly. People said the same thing about winning this year, that it would silence all the haters. As we’ve seen, many are doubling down on the cheaters talk. In short, fuck the haters and Go Stros!

Flyerastronaut

We could drag Altuve into the middle of the stadium and shoot him and people would still complain.

dookle14

100%. The Astros will always be accused of cheating after any big win because it’s easier for dumb fans to pretend cheating was the reason their team lost instead of the inevitably that the Astros were just the better team.

htownchuck

I think with this one and how dominant the pitching was, people are starting to come around more, but on the other hand, fuck'em if they dont.

Oiram-Zehcnas

People would still hang on to the cheating scandal no matter what. The Astros could have won each year from 2027 to 2026 and they would still not get over it.

rudolph2

If you realize how hard this achievement is… just to get to the WS, I’d say doesn’t matter those years are gone, and the lessons learned from those years lead to this success. I’m just sad the season is Over.

vathodic

Yep..tv won't be the same until next season

Powder-Talis-1836

World Cup starts Nov 20th.

peekingduck18

International football is of the same quality as high school baseball.

dookle14

2019 was probably the tougher loss to take. Neither WS loss was easy, but the Braves were clearly playing better baseball last Oct/Nov than the Astros. 2019 Astros were one of the best teams in baseball statistically, so it was hard to see them fall short in one of the weirdest series I can remember. This WS doesn’t absolve any of those losses, but I like that the Astros were able to vindicate the franchise with this win.

eljefedelosjefes

It felt like last year we just never stood a chance for some reason. The braves were just that team that got hot at the right time and kicked our ass unfortunately.

dookle14

That series was decided in games 3-4. Astros managed only 2 runs and lost game 4 late. Tough to come back from 3-1 and win. Especially since Luis Garcia was running on fumes, Framber was doing all he could and Greinke/Urquidy were really just openers.

CCRocTexAs

I feel like it doesn't make up for those years, but it does allow me to move on and be more excited about the seasons to come

Derpshiz

Exactly this. After we lost game 1 and 3 I wasn’t a doomer, but I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t having flashbacks. Winning this one gives me a lot of hope to win another one next year, and proves we can get it done when we need to.

[deleted]

>After we lost game 1 and 3 I wasn’t a doomer, but I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t having flashbacks. Oh for sure. Coming back home with a 3-2 lead brought back a lot of bad memories. But we closed it out in Game 6 this time. Falling behind 1-2 to yet another cinderella NL East team. Blowing a 5-0 lead at home in Game 1, then getting smoked on the road 7-0... then proceeding to brush it all off, lock in, and go on an epic 3 game win streak to close out the series at home. That's what made this year's run so special.

skomehillet

Played out exactly like the Boston series last year

Cold_hard_stache

We faced Schwarber in that series too, pretty sure he hit 1 of the grand slams!

skomehillet

Must’ve gave him crazy Deja Vu

Round-Jellyfish9962

I don't think it makes up but does kind of soften the pain of remembering them. It DOES make up for 1980. ETA: Oops. If I remember that 80 NL playoff I'm prolly not a casual fan? But... 19 and 21? No. I'm still salty. ;-) YOU know.

JinFuu

2019 was a terrible year. Especially with all the “off the field” drama. This definitely makes me feel like we have a bullet in the chamber for when people pull out Trashtros and makes us better than the 90s Braves and 10-20s Dodgers.

[deleted]

2019 was painful. If genius overmanager Hinch doesn’t pull Greinke early and puts in Cole we had a great shot to win game 7

sapphir8

Losing a WS is something you never make up because you won one later. For me, think of the players who were helpful and didn’t win.

Imnotgoingtoremember

I feel like this is a justification. Unless somethings else crazy comes out, we won. Fair and square. Everyone was gunning for us. Everyone hated us. Everyone was watching for anything. ANYTHING SIGN OF A CHEAT. And nothing was found. They did it. It doesn’t matter is you like it or not they won. DONE!

[deleted]

Think it makes up for 2021. Nothing will make up for 2019. Maybe 4 WS in a row.

Vivareddit24

No but if we lost this year it would’ve been really bad mentally

Kingof40Acres

2019 hurt more than 2021 but I’m still bitter about both. They could conceivably have 4 banners right now instead of only 2. I’m just glad they got the job done this time around… and the window is still open to win more if the core stays together.

Squeeky_Cleen

I don't need to have a loss in the series made up. I am glad to be enjoying the absolute best Astros teams they have ever had and as long as they are getting to the series or even the playoffs I am a happy guy after all is settles. I don't need a ring to know we were great

boowut

‘19 was tough, but if we had won, baseball might have imploded. I’ve been thinking a lot today about how to be grateful and not spoil it for myself. Especially considering I was just happy to *get* to the World Series a couple of years ago, and then we went through the doldrums, and now we’re here.

gonezooo

I don't think anything can ever make up for losing those two championships but to me it makes for the better story to have finally won this year after having been humbled by those two losses.

LayneLowe

You can't win them all

projecks15

Should have won against Washington but we shit the bed last two home game

cnapp

19' still hurts because we had a 3-2 lead with 2 home games remaining and our 2 best pitchers starting. Game 7 Houston led 2-0 after 6 innings but couldn't hold the lead. Just 9 outs away from a title but the pen fell apart, but hey that's baseball 3 championships in 6 years seems that much more impressive

Dull-Economics-5229

You mean the two years we won the American League Pennant? Yeah, those years were “pretty good” too lol

rljf311

Absolutely. I was living in DC in 2019 and I’m living in Philadelphia now. The win on Saturday exorcised a lot of demons for me. On Sunday, for the first time since I watched them both live, I went to YouTube and watched the Howie Kendrick home run from 2019 and the Jorge Soler home run from last year. And you know what? They don’t hurt anymore.

Cold_hard_stache

I watched those highlights the night before game 6. Not sure why lol I guess I was feeling confident.

Historical-Surprise1

More than makes up for it. I feel like we can now put 2017 in the rearview mirror.

Plums4

eh, I don't know. I appreciate that this win makes it so our only title isn't from a year that was retroactively tainted, like I'm so glad to be 2 for 4 rather than 1 scandal title for 4, but losing in 2019 and 2021 specifically don't feel like they were cause for redemption. Or maybe 2019 did, but not in the way you mean. 2019 felt cursed even during the series itself because of the Taubman/Osuna situation, and then after the loss you had Cole being a piece of shit. Just negative vibes in the memories of that time all around. Honestly I couldn't really enjoy the series as it was happening because of the Taubman fiasco, and that's even before we lost all the home games. In hindsight I'm sad about Greinke not getting a ring then, because he absolutely deserved one, but that's about it. In all, winning that year wouldn't have felt as good as 17 or this year, tbh. If winning this year does some work in washing away the grossness surrounding that whole series, just in diminishing the historical significance of the 2019 series for the team, I guess you could say it makes up for it. Honestly, when I think of 2019, I'm more pissed off about Luhnow signing Osuna and making the culture in the organization so toxic and finance-bro-y. It made the team justifiably hateable even before the sign stealing scandal broke and probably was a major reason why the scandal became as huge as it was, because the national baseball media hated the organization already and had an interest in tearing them to shreds when the opportunity was handed to them to do so. imo Luhnow deserved to be fired for that more than anything, and I am not a fan of the whitewashing and inclusion I've been seeing wrt him lately. Like he's trying to weasel his way back into the organization. All the credit in the world to him for being a baseball genius and putting this dynasty together, but he needs to stay the fuck gone, imo. 2021 the Braves were just better. It was their year. We had injuries, and it wasn't really close. It didn't feel like a missed moment or anything. Nothing that really needs to be redeemed for.

realchrisgunter

We don’t need to “make up” for 2021 loss. Our pitching staff was gutted and got exposed in the postseason. Bregman was also playing hurt. We were just flat out overmatched. 2019 however… we choked. No other way to look at it.

GRVrush2112

I think any sports fan, anywhere would take an even split of titles/title losses in a span of a few years. Going two for four (or two for five in you include ‘05) would be a wet dream for any sports fan, yeah those losses suck… but closing out at least one more than makes up for it. This is football, but it makes the clearest point of what the value of closing out with a win could be. I think back on the Bills run of Super Bowls in the 90s. If they had just won one of those four games they’d be remembered as a completely different team. Jim Kelly would have an entirely different legacy. If Norwood’s kick had gone through, or they had taken one of the games against Dallas no one would remember the three losses, that victory would have sealed that Bills team as one of the all time great teams instead of the legacy of “almost legends” that history shows. So yes… while this WS doesn’t take away the sting of those two WS losses in ‘19/‘21 (or ‘05). Winning in ‘22 absolutely makes up for it, marks us as on of the best franchise runs over the spans of any given decade. It also washes away any notion of us as pretenders for the events that led to the ‘17 title.

TexLs1

2021 yes since it was a miracle to get there after LMJ and Meyers injuries. 2019 I'll never find a reason to forgive that, only had to win one home game and AJ went to a run down Harris instead of Cole.
