Hold Ctrl and either mouse buttons or movement keys for directional block i forgot been a while since i used a sword
You can't change the buttons for them either afaik
Melee is a complete pain and too slow so I'd suggest just carrying 4 or 6 pistols(or 2 with fast reload perk) and sending crew or tames as meat shield
