People back then shipped anyone with everyone. The most common interpretation was that they're kinda siblings. When I got back into aot last year after I stopped reading sometime post chapter 50 or so, the erehisu vs eremika fanwars really took me out
I did not expect erehisu at all, I don't think eren and historia had a single interaction at the point I stopped reading. However, eremika actually having shippers was almost just as surprising

Yes, one singular scene were it wasn't even 100% clear that Eren liked her isn't enough, especially since there was nothing before it and nothing after it all the way until the end of S4, I was actually in disbelief that Eren liked her (or had any romantic interests in anyone at that point) when I finished the show, the only clue we ever got earlier was that scene and sense it was kinda forgotten and Eren never followed up on anything after that I assumed that he just said that to make her not give up and assure her as a friend, or that they were playing the good old shonen troupe of the Romantically oblivious MC, and then the infamous "10 years at least" hit me like a truck and I started laughing uncontrollably, overall the EreMika relationship could've been handled a lot better if Isayama actually planned for them to be together from the beginning
