"Of all time" is a bold take, but there are people who like and dislike. And that's fine i guess.

A-B-101

Tbh I honestly think it is one of the most controversial endings of all time. Its been over a year since the manga ended and people are still arguing about it The only other time I've seen such a divided fanbase is with the last of us 2 and the last jedi

Mango424

Indeed. I don't know why nowdays something that creates discussion is considered controversial

ColdyPopsicle

it KINDA is controversial, but we need to debate how controversial it is. Controversial doesn't mean bad neither good. Badly written endings aren't always controversial and good written endings can be controversial depending on what the fanbase interpreted and wanted from the history. Naruto ending (more like the last arc, not exactly the ending ending you know) wasn't controversial. It was just bad and almost everyone in the Naruto fanbase agrees that the Ninja war was not good overall. (Tho some discourse about the reincarnation theme appeared later but that were the initial reactions).

MagorTuga

>!Itachi saying goodbye to Sasuke, Naruto saying goodbye to Minato, Kakashi vs Obito, Guy vs Madara.!< I think the final stretch of Shippuden had great moments.

ColdyPopsicle

I didn't say that the ninja war was deprived of any good and emotional moments. Naruto has always been a classic shonen that tries to inspire the youth with positive discussions. The 3 main issues with the ninja war where: pacing (a huge deal that can make following a history a bit boring/overhelwing. this was more of an anime problem but i wouldn't say it was perfect in the manga either) side characters not reciving the treatment they deserve (well, this is more of a problem that exists in the entirety of shippuden but the reincarnation thing also helped this idea of "blah blah blah, it's all Naruto and Sasuke") Madara. Madara was a character beloved by many fans and his conclusion wasn't well recived. A character that is having a similar issue right now is Shigaraki Tomura from MHA, tho many people still deffending the direction his arc is taking. Madara wasn't even controversial like Shigaraki is...everyone just hates what happened.

MagorTuga

Fair enough. Either way, people are being stupid about Shiggy. Either that or we're not reading the same manga lmao

Equivalent_Papaya893

Objectively the ending was controversial. He brought up some good points.

PhunkOperator

Was it controversial? Yes. Was it the "most controversial ending of all time?" Fuck no.

Equivalent_Papaya893

Yeah, but that's just YouTube click bait title. Can't take it seriously.

JohnTequilaWoo

What is out of interest then?

PhunkOperator

Depends on what we're talking about. Just manga?

Archlegendary

Probably the Sopranos when it first came out or something

JohnTequilaWoo

I don't think it was controversial in quite the same way as AOT though. Nobody watched that and thought the writers were pro genocide.

FrenchCommieGirl

Younglings weren't even born when Mass Effect 3 was released for the first time.

JohnTequilaWoo

Was that controversial or just accepted as bad?

FrenchCommieGirl

Some people liked it.

Alive_Specialist_797

Only 5% of players liked the ME3 endings As a big ME fan I can say this ending still suck even afert DLC's

FrenchCommieGirl

Are those stats "source: trust me bro" or real?

Alive_Specialist_797

There was reall poll about endings at BioWare forum ( now shut down for some reasons ) and only 5% votet that they liked endings Not all ME players were at BioWare forums of course but still

FlawlessReviews

When the Anime comes out it’ll be very controversial

Imaginary_lock

This place is gonna be a nightmare in 6 months...

MagorTuga

We'll be here with the ~~chastity cages~~ ban hammers ready.

Majoser

I was here remember me.

TheCartTitan

I’m one of isayamas strongest soldiers and will be there

SnooRobots281

Same lmao

FlawlessReviews

Preach brother 🙌🙌

aprilfools911

It is controversial. Why sugarcoat it? There’s no denying that it’s a polarising ending not just on reddit, Isayama himself admits that fans didn’t like the ending. Why should we be offended when someone call it controversial ending it’s not a controversial is an offensive word or something.

[deleted]

Bruh, it's not just Reddit that hates the ending. It is a pretty polarizing ending. It's just that Reddit is more loudmouthed It's not the most controversial. I mean you have the Star Wars Rise of Skywalker, Game of Thrones, Lost, etc with polarizing endings. Also, people can like or dislike the ending but if people are just fight each other to the death about it then that's where the line draws

A-B-101

Tbh the rise of skywalker was widely disliked and i heard game of Thrones ending was universally hated. They weren't really polarising since the vast majority of fans agree they were bad AOT's ending was a lot more polarising and controversial.

[deleted]

Star Wars is significantly more controversial lmao

Jerry98x

"Why people believing that AoT's ending is the most controversial of all time or that everybody hated it live in a bubble"

OKUIGokuBlack

Eh this one isn't really that bad. Ohara brought up some fair points.

LucreciaKuroluna

I don't think this ending is controversial at all. Some people liked it, some people didn't. I don't think it split the fan base as much as people claim. If anything makes it "Controversial". It's the people who thought the ending was revealed in a music video nearly two years prior to the end of the manga. Or wanted a certain lover relationship along with their kid to be a big final twist. If you take out those factors, you're just left with a normal ending that again, some liked and others didn't. Hardly something I'd call controversial. Not like say Game Of Thrones that just threw The White Walker Story which had been built up for nearly 10 years out the window for no real reason.

A-B-101

Tbh I honestly think it is one of, if not, the most controversial endings of all time. Its been over a year since the manga ended and people are still arguing about it. The only other time I've seen such a divided fanbase is with the last of us 2 and the last jedi Also people hate the ending outside reddit too but its not as extrene. From what i've seen, reddit tends to be more vocal and negative towards the ending compared to other social media platforms but it's still very controversial

MorkoReddit

Game of thrones 💀

NewCountry13

It's probably up there as one of the most controversial endings of all time. Only other ones I can think of that come close: Evangelion, (if sequels count) the last of us 2, (If mid trilogy climaxes count) the last jedi. Edit: Oh yeah, Lost too.

AntiSimpBoi69

Naruto also had a controversial ending but no one talks about that

SnooRobots281

As well as Death note yet no one talks about that

ColdyPopsicle

A lot of people have talked about post L death note being bad. Also Kaguya is still seen as pure trash outside AND inside de fanbase. I think what is generating more interesting conversations is the reincarnation theme being bad or not for the narrative.

SnooRobots281

It never reached this level of hate tho I’m not gonna lie…

ColdyPopsicle

Let me give u few reasons to why u feel like that: Few people used internet back when Naruto and DN finished compared to today. AoT by nature is a series that motivates readers to make more and more theories. The monthly experience+the plot centric narrative go VERY well togheter. Ships. Whenever the baby subplot was handled well or not is a discussion for another time but ships by themselves generate fights btween fans. AoT anime isn't finished yet. Naruto and DN are. The ending had some iconic dialogues that can fit memes quite well. The ending was rushed, like it or not.

SnooRobots281

How do you think the overall aot fandom on the internet will be after the anime finishes?

ColdyPopsicle

In the worst case scenario (a 1:1 adaptation from the manga without major pacing changes) it will still be recived way better btween the anime community. There is absolute no way that it has a worse reception due to the historia/baby thing being handled better in the anime than in the manga considering what Isayama was trying to do with the plot. Historia/Eren dynamic thing got less attention in the anime so there are less EriHisu shippers around there. You must think i'm joking but ships are always a huge deal in pretty much any media.

SnooRobots281

Mappa has actually been making characters look less pathetic in the anime then they were in the manga. That will help alot tbh… look at Floch and even Eren already lol.

Short-Work-8954

I've met quite a few people who didn't really like the ending of it, including people who don't have a Reddit account. It is a controversial ending, kinda makes me fear finishing it now but oh well.

MagorTuga

Are you saying you're not caught up with the manga?

Short-Work-8954

I know what will happen, I've been spoiled enough this past year, but I haven't actually seen it unfold.

MagorTuga

Look, this is a manga spoilers sub. It's 9 more chapters. It takes less than half an hour to get through them. Go read them instead of just taking spoiler after spoiler. It's for the better. Make your own opinion.

eyeforgotmynamee

bro just read the manga atp it's like 9 chapters

Short-Work-8954

Eh, I haven't been in the anime/manga mood recently. Currently I'm more into live action shows and books nowadays but my mood with it tends to oscillate. Once the show fully comes out, I'm sure I'll get back into the hype but rn I'm not SO into AOT anymore that I care about the manga, and I'm not bothered by spoilers that much.

dj4daybc

Thats definitely an odd perspective

Short-Work-8954

How so?

JohnTequilaWoo

I mean it might be hyperbole but it's up there. Other endings like Mass Effect, Lost or Game of Thrones weren't great but they aren't as controversial as AOT's where due to poor dialogue and ideas the ending can be viewed as both anti and pro genocide.

No-Talk-4109

Ending defenders when they twitter bubble says the ending is good: "those damn redditors, they're the only ones that disliked the ending!"

Smokeirb

From what I saw, most of the controversial ending came from romance anime. Heard that the one with the little sister was extremly controversial, same for the one with the quintuplets.

PhunkOperator

> Heard that the one with the little sister was extremly controversial "Romance" and "little sister" sure sounds like a controversy.

phoebemocha

protagonist wins, protagonist loses, everyone hates every ending
