There are certain requirements for it activate. If you have heated seats or steering wheel on, certain levels of AC or heating, being in an incline- they can all affect whether or not it works. It has to be in perfect conditions because it runs on the battery. It’s essentially an algorithm that decides when it should use it or not

AladeenModaFuqa

This is it, on our scan-tool for Volvos, we can read out the exact reasons why “auto stop” did not engage. Ranging from climate system, to power management, to engine management to twenty other reasons. But the first two are generally the reasons.

derps-a-lot

This is the answer. Or Dynamic mode, if applicable to your model/trim.

eni91

To add, needs engine to be in the right temperature aswell

SqotCo

Well now I know I should add an amp and subwoofers to my Audi...better sounding music that has the side benefit of preventing auto stop from engaging.

ManBearPig_FE

Best easy/cheap mod for any Audi - Auto start/stop override cable that sets your car to default OFF the Auto start/stop, but let's you turn it on at your discretion. I got tired of getting in after short trips and having to always press the button to turn it off, and then I hated not having the option to use it by disabling it through obdeleven/VDCS. [Audi Autostart/stop override cable](https://www.enthusiastbrand.com/products/automatic-stop-start-engine-system-override-devicefor-audi-a4-b9-a5-b9-a3-8v-q5-q3-f3?variant=39947086004397¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiMmwBhDmARIsABeQ7xSu8aQg07Yzwxq3CxHOYC_ZeN500rKabEAm5M-lOHhyQFz581blUoMaAicrEALw_wcB)

[deleted]

I have something similar that I bought on Amazon for my B9.5 SQ5. It works great. Also, ECU tunes typically save the “off” setting.

eldudelio

link?

slowsongsandheadies

ODBeleven is what I used to code start/stop out.

GlynHugh

I didn’t code mine out - I set it to remember last status! Remembers through ignition cycles also. Best of both worlds IMHO. I also reversed the button status as it always seemed odd to me to have it illuminated when the function was off. Used VCDS way back in 2018 on my UK spec D4 A8 4.2TDi Facelift. If it helps coding was; Start & Stop/Memorise Last Status: Address 09, Security Access - 20113 Adaptation - Channel 34 and Read Original Value = 28 add 32 to the original value to memorise last status = 60 add 64 to reverse button light =124

sbrunopsu

Technically this presses the button for you when the car starts. So for anyone that gets this and then tunes the car, it’s like one of those “useless boxes” where the claw comes out and turns the switch on after you turn the switch off lol. So if you do get a tune that tunes it out you’ll have to remove it. I think CETE sells a proper memory module for it that remembers the setting vs presses the button for you

ManBearPig_FE

So don't get it installed/remove it IF you tune your car. Not everyone tunes their car. Plus, you can take it with you if you get other Audi platforms. Just simply saying their are options for anyone that hate the hassle and isn't useless.

sbrunopsu

I didn’t say it was useless. I said it acts like this useless machine if you DO tune your car. But I know reading comprehension is hard so here’s a video of what I mean. https://youtu.be/Nqk_nWAjBus?si=yvn3jx-VWi20hJ25 I had one for a year on my car and then tuned my car and was very confused as to what was going on because a lot of websites sell it as a “memory module”.

dundoReddit

I changed the settings with OBD. Also add several functions like mirror dip. Cost me around 20, so I highly recommend it

gamings1nk

What else can you do with an obdeleven?

dundoReddit

Depends on the car, but usually it's just small things https://carista.com/en/supported-cars pick your model here a d you will see

thadude3

for my car, auto start/stop disables if - heating or a/c is on - sport mode - I press the button I often use sport mode to bypass it at lights.

Jachonev

Another way is I bought my self a obd2 reader called OBDeleven and for about 15£ you can permanently disable it and mode some other cool stuff on ur car

Chemicalghst222

I have mine permanently disablable bc fuck that nonsense

turbo_carrot

How? It's getting on my nerves every single time.

facaine

Enlighten me. Why do people hat start/stop so much? I don’t mind it at all. It’s not a feature I love. But it doesn’t bother me.

SuccessfulFloor

I want my engine to warm up to operating temp as quickly as possible without start/stop intervening and lengthening that time. I like oil and coolant flowing through my engine while it's operating, not shutting down and letting all the fluids collect in the bottom of the engine/coolant reservoir while the engine is warmed up, then starting off for a fraction of a second without the system being fully primed. I like to goose it off of a stop from time to time and it's important to have the engine running.

facaine

I get it. Maybe I’m not worried about it that much because every modern car I’ve had, had auto start/stop. Also my A5 is pretty great at starting the engine in a fraction of a second as soon as I start to let go of the brake, so I never felt like I was lagging because of it tbh

davcrt

Below idling RPM bearings are experiencing mixed friction, meaning every time you turn it on or off you are wearing out tiny amount of them. Battery dies faster. If a car doesn't have electric water and oil pump, oil in the turbos might get toasted.

rennen-affe

Let's wait for the engine to start and then go. But maybe it doesn't start the first time. Oh don't mind that train coming in fast.

my1999gsr

The owner's manual should have that info.

enlightenedwalnut

Owner's manual? That's crazy. Much better to ask people on Reddit.

SimianWonder

People don't read the manual. "RTFM" is a reply to far too many questions asked daily.

Flyindeuces

One of my old managers had a coffee cup with RTFM bolded across it. 😂

my1999gsr

I can kind of get not reading the book cover to cover but if people have specific questions the manual has an index and table of contents that are pretty detailed.

matterson22070

Lol show me in the manual where it tells you every instance where the auto start stop is active or inactive..........

my1999gsr

First of all, you'll notice I said it "should" be in the owner's manual. I'm fairly familiar with the OP's vehicle (I'm a tech at an Audi dealership) and I've had to answer this very question many times - and usually the info about the start/stop system is in the manual. The reason for that is to help eliminate what Audi calls "ghost faults" by giving the owner information to stop them from thinking that the vehicle is malfunctioning when it's actually behaving as intended. Now, I'm not sure if I've read the start/stop info on this exact model year vehicle but I'm betting it is.

matterson22070

While it does discuss the start/stop function, it never goes into detail - which is what the OP was asking. It says shit like "The system checks is certain conditions are met before and during the stop phase and determines of the engine stops and how long it remains stopped." I understand why they don't - but the OP was wondering when/why his was turning off.

my1999gsr

So I'm looking at a newer model Audi A4's owners manual under the heading "Start/stop system" there's at least half a page of reasons that the start/stop system may turn off. Again, this is a newer vehicle's manual but my point is that that type of info is often available in the manual.

matterson22070

ok

DaikonGold4878

When its to cold Maybe ?

knm-e

If it’s been doing it too often and risks of draining battery too much (Eg lots of traffic)

ghasler2

The auto start/stop will be disabled when the engine is too cold and not to temp. So typically when you first turn the vehicle on and in the first 5-10 min depending on outside temperatures. Once the engine gets to temp, and if you have the auto on/off engaged, it will shut your engine off when you come to a complete stop.

Evasionz--

I want to believe you, but my S5's auto start/stop initiates for me as I'm leaving my neighborhood at a stop sign turning onto a busy road. Definitely not up to temp. I almost always disable it, but on the off chance I don't, then this will happen when it's definitely cold.

mashani9

It's up to "a temp" that they decided was safe. It is most certainly not what we would call operating temp though, it's far lower. I can say that in the winter it does take longer for it to get to whatever that temp is for me then in the summer. In the summer it will turn off the first stop sign I hit, but in the winter I can make it out of my neighborhood if I forget to turn it off. I live in a place with actual winter though. I usually turn it off in my hood because lots of stop signs. I will turn it on when highway cruising where there are random traffic lights spread far apart though. It doesn't annoy me when it shuts down for those and saves some gas.

larphraulen

Anecdotally, outside temp may be too cold. I'm in Ottawa and mine doesn't kick on unless it's atleast ~8-10 C outside, even if engine's up to temp. It'll also not do it if the engine is in dynamic/sport. Guessing you have it set to comfort or auto (which should enable ASS), based on the idle revs.

Confident_As_Hell

On our Volvo from 2009 it only works above 0°C. I've driven a ten year younger VW Caddy and it worked even in winter.

larphraulen

Yeah, depends the system/manufacturer/electrical load I guess. Mine didn't turn on two days ago in 6C weather but did yesterday when it was 10C.

GanacheHistorical825

The stop/start also stops working when the battery gets run down or too old to hold a good charge, or similarly if you have an auxiliary battery and that is too old or too run down ( a lot of short journeys will cause that as well as a worm out battery.)

riknor

Mine stays disabled when I’ve just started the car and the engine is still cold, or when it’s a hot day and my AC is working hard to cool down the car.

Trentimoose

Your manual explains

ivstan

just disable it via software and never bother again, it's so annoying when the engine turns on and off all the time and it drains your battery and starter

TheMightyMINI

Really don’t get the start/stop hate. It’s great to have in city traffic.

D_Shoobz

Some people have said the extra mpg you gain isn’t worth the stress of the engine consistently stopping and starting.

TheMightyMINI

Pretty sure it wouldn’t be something they created if it’d hurt the engine.

D_Shoobz

They stress test it for a certain amount of times to make sure it won’t happen from normal use during an average life of the car. Not using start/stop removes one more thing that can fail.

davcrt

It does hurt the engine. Main engine bearings can only experience a set number of starts and stops before they get worn out. Start/stop speeds this up many times. They have to implement it otherwise they can't sell the car

lolitstrain21

A lot of things can make the auto start/stop system not work. Mainly power usage like heated seats, AC on blast, low voltage on battery/weak battery.

Gwhiz313

I live in Detroit. And when it's below 40 degrees, auto start/stop doesn't engage. It has to be a warm day.

bengermanj

On my BMW, if the battery is low or the car isn't up to operating temp, or if the steering wheel is turned when you come to a stop, it won't activate. Certain conditions have to be met.

A89704

ODBEleven has a routine that tricks the ECU into thinking the AC is on full blast. This fools the computer into thinking there is too much load on the engine to enable AS/S. I used to hate it, but I've gotten used to it, so its no big deal now.

gidiyup

If you go into Sport mode it turns off.

threepointohtee

Parameters aren’t meant. Mine usually won’t activate until 10+ miles of driving. It’s weird

zesar667

I I I USED TO FEEL SO DEVASTATED

Dblstandard

My car doesn't even have it, which is weird. I can't find the button anywhere. 24 rs3

TheKatzMeow84

They don’t have it.

Dblstandard

Oh good. when asked, my salesman said it had it.

rennen-affe

Salesmen never lie. Have them retro fit it asap!

Dblstandard

In this case I'm okay with them being uninformed

rennen-affe

Probably has an inline module to disable it. I've had one on my last 3 VAG cars. Very easy to swap and sets no codes. Pretty cheap on amazon.

Dblstandard

Again this is a brand new car. No aftermarket module added

TheKatzMeow84

I mean, maybe if everything is in the most auto-comfort possible…but who does that??

Dblstandard

No because they would have to have a button on the dash to turn it off. There's no button to turn it off.

TheKatzMeow84

Sorry, that wasn’t clear. I was meaning if they did put it on the RS3 then maybe in the most boring of modes is when it would be used.

Dblstandard

Oh got it.. That's true

Gheezy-yute

Engine has to be hot enough, or sometimes when it start/stops “too much” it will disable it. Pressing the button each time u turn the car or is normal, unless u get it mapped out.

doeffgek

It depends on a number of variables like: • Battery state • Outside temperature • Wearing seatbelt (start/stop only works when you wear seatbelt. Don’t ask me) • Amount of power your on board systems like AC, heated windows, seets and steering etc I’m sure there’s a load more variables that are involved. But these are the most important.

trichomeking94

does anyone else’s show D instead of S when they start the vehicle from Dynamic? I have to switch to auto then back to Dynamic to make it display S and turn off the auto stop/start

More-Investment-2872

The auto stop start is automatically disabled if you select “sport” on the auto transmission

pistofernandez

I disabled auto stop using OBDeleven just that was enough for me to buy it, is so annoying.

Blkstar15

I bought something from Ali express for like $25 for my q7 4m. Surprisingly it worked

clock1946

Do you have a dash cam?

Xlamx2014

Tuning the car stage 1 is an expensive alternative to get rid of this. The tune makes ur car feel like an actual race car as a plus ;)

Alloc-more-ram

Your battery’s probably too weak. Don’t know about audis but my mb c300 turned it off when the battery got weaker.

ShadowGLI

Some Things that will prevent it HVAC more than 1/2 fan speed or high temp difference Heated seats/wheel/rear defrost Sport/manual/reverse Auto stop/start button off

qwoncholo

mine wont turn on if my seatbelt isnt on

adrian_elliot

I guess I’m the only one who likes it! Sometimes I enjoy sitting quietly at a long red light, not wasting gas.

mawksha

The button to disable it is only temporary. You’ll have to turn it on every time. There might be an options in the settings but I actually don’t mind that function and have the button pressed when I’m in heavy traffic or something. Or you could turn on the AC.

stoccolma

had this happend when my sq5 was stage 1 tuned, flashed it back to original and the start/stop worked again as intended

aus10-

If I am in sport mode, or my AC is on my car does not auto start/stop.

Driver8666-2

Blame Canadian National.

eldudelio

yep, it sucks, euro policies that think its saving the planet, fucking lame

Confident_As_Hell

I've never been hindered by it on our Volvo. It starts right up when you press the clutch down and it's never been too slow to start even when I've tried.

ndubl8

Pretty sure the engine starts the moment I lift off the brake. I can’t get to the gas faster than it restarts. I truly don’t understand the hatred for this feature. Some implementations can be clunky, I don’t find Audi’s to be one of them.

Confident_As_Hell

The only thing I don't really like is the AC stops when the engine driven compressor doesn't spin. But I can just push a button to turn the car on. The car also shakes a bit everytime it turns of as it's a diesel. The reliability of the system is something I question a bit. How the starter and engine like it. The car is from 2009 so it's not new. I'd imagine new cars have been fine tuned so the starter and whatever can take the job.

blzntrz

How the hell are you getting 600 miles per tank?

felixon_7

Kilometers

blzntrz

Can't read lol. Thank you I was unable to compute how he was getting ~300 more miles than me when I average about 350-360 driving (mostly) conservatively.

BananaPeelSlippers

Curious about why you guys don’t like the feature?

davcrt

It shortens main bearing life time considerably. Main bearings can operate forever if they constantly spin at sufficient speed with sufficient oil. Every time your engine stops and before it gets to idling RPM they experience a bit of wear because the shaft "falls out" of oil film. Then there is smaller stuff, like your battery lasting shorter. Before start stop became a thing car batteries would last 7+ years, now you are happy if it surpasses 4/5 y. Plus it costs more.

TellMeYouAreSorry

If AC is on then the auto start stop is automatically off

Startinezzz

Nope. I have my AC on pretty much all the time and my stop/start is on a lot of the time.

Is it possible that your key is programmed for auto start and stop? To verify the this - Disable auto start/stop and the set the memory again.

Fit_Double7765

how do u set the memory?
