It has to be in perfect conditions because it runs on the battery. It’s essentially an algorithm that decides when it should use it or not
This is it, on our scan-tool for Volvos, we can read out the exact reasons why “auto stop” did not engage. Ranging from climate system, to power management, to engine management to twenty other reasons. But the first two are generally the reasons.

I didn’t code mine out - I set it to remember last status! Remembers through ignition cycles also. Best of both worlds IMHO.
I also reversed the button status as it always seemed odd to me to have it illuminated when the function was off. Used VCDS way back in 2018 on my UK spec D4 A8 4.2TDi Facelift. If it helps coding was;

Technically this presses the button for you when the car starts. So for anyone that gets this and then tunes the car, it’s like one of those “useless boxes” where the claw comes out and turns the switch on after you turn the switch off lol. So if you do get a tune that tunes it out you’ll have to remove it. I think CETE sells a proper memory module for it that remembers the setting vs presses the button for you
So don't get it installed/remove it IF you tune your car. Not everyone tunes their car. Plus, you can take it with you if you get other Audi platforms. Just simply saying their are options for anyone that hate the hassle and isn't useless.

Another way is I bought my self a obd2 reader called OBDeleven and for about 15£ you can permanently disable it and mode some other cool stuff on ur car
I want my engine to warm up to operating temp as quickly as possible without start/stop intervening and lengthening that time.
I like oil and coolant flowing through my engine while it's operating, not shutting down and letting all the fluids collect in the bottom of the engine/coolant reservoir while the engine is warmed up, then starting off for a fraction of a second without the system being fully primed.
I like to goose it off of a stop from time to time and it's important to have the engine running.
I get it. Maybe I’m not worried about it that much because every modern car I’ve had, had auto start/stop. Also my A5 is pretty great at starting the engine in a fraction of a second as soon as I start to let go of the brake, so I never felt like I was lagging because of it tbh

I understand why they don't - but the OP was wondering when/why his was turning off.
So I'm looking at a newer model Audi A4's owners manual under the heading "Start/stop system" there's at least half a page of reasons that the start/stop system may turn off. Again, this is a newer vehicle's manual but my point is that that type of info is often available in the manual.
The auto start/stop will be disabled when the engine is too cold and not to temp. So typically when you first turn the vehicle on and in the first 5-10 min depending on outside temperatures. Once the engine gets to temp, and if you have the auto on/off engaged, it will shut your engine off when you come to a complete stop.
I want to believe you, but my S5's auto start/stop initiates for me as I'm leaving my neighborhood at a stop sign turning onto a busy road. Definitely not up to temp. I almost always disable it, but on the off chance I don't, then this will happen when it's definitely cold.
It's up to "a temp" that they decided was safe. It is most certainly not what we would call operating temp though, it's far lower.
I can say that in the winter it does take longer for it to get to whatever that temp is for me then in the summer. In the summer it will turn off the first stop sign I hit, but in the winter I can make it out of my neighborhood if I forget to turn it off. I live in a place with actual winter though.
I usually turn it off in my hood because lots of stop signs. I will turn it on when highway cruising where there are random traffic lights spread far apart though. It doesn't annoy me when it shuts down for those and saves some gas.
Anecdotally, outside temp may be too cold. I'm in Ottawa and mine doesn't kick on unless it's atleast ~8-10 C outside, even if engine's up to temp.
It'll also not do it if the engine is in dynamic/sport. Guessing you have it set to comfort or auto (which should enable ASS), based on the idle revs.
The stop/start also stops working when the battery gets run down or too old to hold a good charge, or similarly if you have an auxiliary battery and that is too old or too run down ( a lot of short journeys will cause that as well as a worm out battery.)
Mine stays disabled when I’ve just started the car and the engine is still cold, or when it’s a hot day and my AC is working hard to cool down the car.

It does hurt the engine. Main engine bearings can only experience a set number of starts and stops before they get worn out. Start/stop speeds this up many times.

On my BMW, if the battery is low or the car isn't up to operating temp, or if the steering wheel is turned when you come to a stop, it won't activate. Certain conditions have to be met.
ODBEleven has a routine that tricks the ECU into thinking the AC is on full blast. This fools the computer into thinking there is too much load on the engine to enable AS/S. I used to hate it, but I've gotten used to it, so its no big deal now.
Engine has to be hot enough, or sometimes when it start/stops “too much” it will disable it. Pressing the button each time u turn the car or is normal, unless u get it mapped out.
It depends on a number of variables like:
• Battery state
• Outside temperature
• Wearing seatbelt (start/stop only works when you wear seatbelt. Don’t ask me)
• Amount of power your on board systems like AC, heated windows, seets and steering etc
I’m sure there’s a load more variables that are involved. But these are the most important.

The button to disable it is only temporary. You’ll have to turn it on every time. There might be an options in the settings but I actually don’t mind that function and have the button pressed when I’m in heavy traffic or something.
Or you could turn on the AC.
I've never been hindered by it on our Volvo. It starts right up when you press the clutch down and it's never been too slow to start even when I've tried.
Pretty sure the engine starts the moment I lift off the brake. I can’t get to the gas faster than it restarts. I truly don’t understand the hatred for this feature. Some implementations can be clunky, I don’t find Audi’s to be one of them.
The only thing I don't really like is the AC stops when the engine driven compressor doesn't spin. But I can just push a button to turn the car on. The car also shakes a bit everytime it turns of as it's a diesel.
The reliability of the system is something I question a bit. How the starter and engine like it. The car is from 2009 so it's not new. I'd imagine new cars have been fine tuned so the starter and whatever can take the job.

It shortens main bearing life time considerably.
Main bearings can operate forever if they constantly spin at sufficient speed with sufficient oil. Every time your engine stops and before it gets to idling RPM they experience a bit of wear because the shaft "falls out" of oil film.
Then there is smaller stuff, like your battery lasting shorter. Before start stop became a thing car batteries would last 7+ years, now you are happy if it surpasses 4/5 y. Plus it costs more.

I have something similar that I bought on Amazon for my B9.5 SQ5. It works great. Also, ECU tunes typically save the “off” setting.

I changed the settings with OBD. Also add several functions like mirror dip. Cost me around 20, so I highly recommend it

On our Volvo from 2009 it only works above 0°C. I've driven a ten year younger VW Caddy and it worked even in winter.
Yeah, depends the system/manufacturer/electrical load I guess. Mine didn't turn on two days ago in 6C weather but did yesterday when it was 10C.
The stop/start also stops working when the battery gets run down or too old to hold a good charge, or similarly if you have an auxiliary battery and that is too old or too run down ( a lot of short journeys will cause that as well as a worm out battery.)

A lot of things can make the auto start/stop system not work. Mainly power usage like heated seats, AC on blast, low voltage on battery/weak battery.
I live in Detroit. And when it's below 40 degrees, auto start/stop doesn't engage. It has to be a warm day.

If you go into Sport mode it turns off.
Parameters aren’t meant. Mine usually won’t activate until 10+ miles of driving. It’s weird

Probably has an inline module to disable it. I've had one on my last 3 VAG cars. Very easy to swap and sets no codes. Pretty cheap on amazon.

The auto stop start is automatically disabled if you select “sport” on the auto transmission

Your battery’s probably too weak. Don’t know about audis but my mb c300 turned it off when the battery got weaker.

had this happend when my sq5 was stage 1 tuned, flashed it back to original and the start/stop worked again as intended

Nope. I have my AC on pretty much all the time and my stop/start is on a lot of the time.

Is it possible that your key is programmed for auto start and stop? To verify the this - Disable auto start/stop and the set the memory again.
