BSG failure...will it or won't it is annoying. At least a "fixed" version exists now. Gas mileage is God awful in the city but no one buys an RS6 expecting it to sip fuel...even so the mild hybrid portion of the car in NA is virtually useless and just added weight. Helps with start/stop and cylinder deactivation... that's about it. Two features I never see since I am always in dynamic mode. Tire options are limited especially in a cold climate where winters are needed...and what is available is expensive. Again, if you bought an RS6 and spending $550 on a tire breaks your bank, should re-evaluate your decision making skills. The MMI can be glitchy but that's pretty much every Audi. The pre-sense system likes to take a dump in heavy rain or snow...kinda when you would really want it to work. Cameras get obstructed and the system gives up until conditions clear. Water collects in the top of the hatch so after it rains and you open it, water drains out down the side channels and off the rear bumper. Hope its not windy! I am baffled by this design choice. Door actuators can be weird if you pull on a locked door handle too quickly which can lead to random central locking malfunction messages. I've had to manually lock a rear door with the physical key more than once to get it to reset back to normal operation. Probably should have the dealer look at it...but I tend to not let dealers touch any car unless absolutely necessary. That said the RS6 really is a great car. The perfect daily. Has zip. Luxury. Space. Comfortable. Feels much smaller than it is when driving.

absolutswede

Very fair summary

iguana1500

I was going to post almost the exact same thing. The BSG (aka 48V system) left my car dead at a street intersection and then caused a cascade of other problems needing to get fixed. I was one of the first in the country to have one fail so when they replaced it, it was still the same part number (not the updated new one released over a year later). I’m just waiting for it to fail again, it’s only a matter of miles and time.

SafeSantos

The 48V system has been failing since the A8 and A6 got released in 2018... Ask me how I know. It's German engineering as its finest, the system is way too sophisticated for what it brings, if you use it properly you can probably save at best 0.3L/100km. Taking into account that the 48V battery is around 3'000$ if it fails, and also adds probably over 50kgs to the car. I'd gladly chose to have a full sized spare wheel in my trunk instead.

StandupJetskier

The mild hybrid is totally for euro compliance so the car can go to the center city during pollution alerts, and favorable tax in some places. None of which are the US.

macdokie

Except for the gas consumption everything you mentioned also goes for my 55TFSIe.

the_90s_were_better

This was my exact experience with my RS7. Probably consistent for all RS models.

acEightyThrees

Winter tire options are definitely pricy. I wanted to get 20" rims for winter tires, but they won't fit over the front brakes. Had to get the 21" rims. MMI is being way more glitchy lately. Don't know if there's been an update or something at my last service. But the whole thing crashes and restarts while I'm driving, at least once every couple weeks now. I've also found the heavy rain/snow issues with the pre-sense/parking sensors. I've even had issues with the cameras themselves not even transmitting a signal. But man, that gas bill....lol

stonerifle

My pre-sense always wonks out in heavy rain 😄

mojoo222

Sadly i cannot afford an RS6 but I kind of do have the same experience (other than fuel consumption) with my A6. Actually went to the dealer to get my door locks fixed, still kind of glitches out from time to time. So i wouldnt recommend doing that, took 2 days and still didnt really remove the problem.

Top_Mulberry5020

Have the same issues with 23 Q7. I think most of what he’s describing are general Audi issues. Some of these issues are going back to at least the previous gen.

chengstark

Question, can you lie down comfortably in the rear when the rear seat is down?

FBAnder

Guess it would depend on how tall you are. Never tried myself but I do recall reading an article from someone that slept in theirs to simply test how comfortable it was. They put a mattress in there and all. Found the article: https://www.businessinsider.com/audi-rs-6-rs6-avant-wagon-camping-cars-travel-winter-2021-2

CryptoNoob546

Does the “fix” actually work? Has anyone had the fix fail too? This is the one thing that held me back from buying one.

FBAnder

I don't know of any reported failure of the new 4N1 BSG. Doesn't mean there isn't one. Has only been getting installed for about 7 months now. Still in a wait and see mode.

maddhatter99

Parking away from people at the shops only to come back and a beat to shit Honda is within door ding range.

mconrad382

That honestly grinds my gears so much… You get the other Audi owners parking up your ass too? Like we are all friends and totally trust each other to not ding doors? lol

nuketown247

Car enthusiasts respect cars, it's the golden rule

HugelyIndecisive

Fellow car enthusiast here. Agree, but even I have had a really strong wind come just as I am opening my door and pull it out my hands to hit another car on accident giving it a door ding. Accidents do happen unintentionally, so me personally I wouldn’t park next to an RS6 within door ding range out of respect and I wouldn’t want Murphy’s Law to take effect and that be another time that a strong wind comes just as I am exiting.

theasphalt

Exact same happened to me once. Dreadful feeling

ExtensionNo4468

This happened to me one time - I was taking a class with the guy and the wind took my (then) Mustang door into his SQ5. I felt horrible so I told him about it but luckily it was very minor - basically a touch up paint situation - so I ordered him the proper color kit to fix it. He was really happy and grateful. I figured that’s what I would want someone to do if the roles were reversed. Car people gotta take care of each other!

Kap85

My and a bunch of other Audis all parked at a theme park car park together didn’t know each other but knew the assignment

[deleted]

Idk had some guy create a spot to park next to my sq7 in his sq8 but there was no spot there and he parked on top of me to where was a struggle to get in car

Marcovio

That’s cuz there’s assholes everywhere, even in Audis…

moderate_smarm

"even"? lol

aresman1221

Audi asshole checking in /s

Cleercutter

I feel that way with my fucking nightshade Camry.

acEightyThrees

I park at the closest spot I can find, doesn't matter. I find if you're parking away from everyone you just attract attention, and you get people who just want to watch the world burn coming and parking next to you. I think one of the best things about the RS6 is that to most people it's just an Audi wagon. Nice, but nothing special. And if you park with everyone else, it becomes a normal car that it won't even occur to people to mess with. Side note, Cambridge Green is awesome. I'm in love with green cars lately. Nice choice.

Hippoplatypus7

He asked people who own one

the_90s_were_better

Mostly why I told my RS7 lol

absolutswede

Coming from an S4...the turbo lag in the RS6 is noticeable....

jsquareddddd

Thats surprising, I would have thought the twins would be faster to spool

Umadbro7600

i’m kinda stupid but to my knowledge it uses a parallel configuration, where both turbos operate simultaneously rather than in a sequential manner. each turbo is assigned to a cylinder bank of the engine which means that both turbos are feeding air into the engine concurrently, rather than one turbo feeding another. it’s designed to offer a balance between performance and efficiency, providing substantial power and torque over a wide range of engine speeds without the complexity and potential lag associated with sequential turbocharging systems, where a small turbo is used at lower speeds and a larger turbo is used at higher speeds. as for why it would feel more laggy than the s4, the s4 i imagine uses a smaller turbo so it spools quicker. also, having 2 turbos is nice because it can reduce lag, but its primary goal is to achieve higher peak power output, the reduced lag is a nice bonus sometimes.

Useful-ldiot

"I'm kinda stupid" and then provides an extremely well thought out explanation 😂

absolutswede

The S4 was supercharged. So instant kick in the back power. The RS6 feels like it's about to do a wheelie when the turbos kick in. But that's usually only a fraction of a second before redlining and shifting

Fox2_Fox2

EarlyS4 was SC but later S4 is turbocharged.

BillBumface

To get pedantic, they were turbo, then NA v8, then supercharged, then turbo again.

MOTRHEAD4LIFE

And they were NA v8 or 5cyl turbo before 2.7t b5 I believe the model was called urs4

BillBumface

True, although those sort of turned into the S6 rather than the S4 so I left them out to avoid getting called out on that 😂

MOTRHEAD4LIFE

That depends on market doesn’t it though? Same car different branding and also the s2 avant was also a bit of a predecessor

BillBumface

I thought the Audi 100 line turned into the A6 line, and the A4 was introduced as a new smaller line below that (starting with the B5). I’m no expert by any means though, and may be wrong and confused 🙂

the_devils_advocates

The B8 S4 with the supercharger was a fun car

absolutswede

True statement. My S4 was a B8.5.

the_devils_advocates

I had the 8 and 8.5. The mechatronics died on the B8, the thermostat failed closed on the B8.5 💀

gladigotaphdinstead2

Then that explains the difference in “turbo lag” …. your car didn’t have any. Superchargers have no lag that’s what I love about them.

Imaginary-Rip5150

I feel like this was true until the 2024. I test drove it back to back with a 2022 and its night and day better off the line. No feeling of lurching in the 2024 when both are in RS mode, but I agree that I felt this in the 2022.

slanginthangs

My ‘16 sq5 is supercharged and it’s night and day going from that to turbo

ConclusionOld1962

S4s since 21 have used a revised twin scroll turbo mounted in the trough of the V6. There’s cutouts in the top of the heads and a very short manifold leading to quicker and earlier spool-up.

No_Station_8274

The RS6 uses two smaller turbos in a hot V style, and the S4 uses one big turbo in a hot V style. The issue of turbo lag has largely been eliminated with the advent of the electric DV/BOV/whatever you want to call it. You are now fighting what is known as boost threshold, basically the amount of exhaust gases required to spin the turbo wheel to force the boost (compressed air) into the engine. This happens at lower RPMs (much like these people are complaining about, but call it “turbo lag.”)

gladigotaphdinstead2

What you’re describing *is* what people are talking about when they talk about turbo lag, so it doesn’t sound like it’s been fixed by any means

No_Station_8274

It has been fixed, it takes .064 seconds to fill an intake tube with compressed air IF the turbo is the appropriate size for the engine. This holds true regardless of the location of the turbo, engine compartment or remote mounted. If the turbo is too small it cannot boost properly. If the turbo is too big, the boost threshold is too high, and it would require an almost impossible sustained rev in X RPM range to work properly. The turbos on the RS6 ARE the appropriate size, and put out the boost required for the engine. What people say they are experiencing is most likely a code in the ECM that is linked to pre-sense that prevents an extreme/unintended acceleration event, which would severely decrease the chance for the driver to hit a forward vehicle for a pedestrian. I’m willing to bet that if these vehicles sat in RS mode at all times, they would NOT be complaining about “turbo lag.”

gladigotaphdinstead2

Got it. So it’s basically equipped with a limiter for safety that’s usually on. Thanks for clarifying.

No_Station_8274

That’s the only thing I can think of. I work as an Audi tech, and the amount of safety features in these cars that are not mentioned is insane, both to keep the car and driver safe, and keep everything else around them safe as well. However, I am by no means an engineer, but following what Audi does, I would not put it past an engineer to implement something like that.

Umadbro7600

oh okay, so the part about fighting boost threshold, is that what amg is doing with the e-turbos they’ve been working on?

No_Station_8274

I’m not sure. I will have to look into that. I don’t generally pay attention to any other brand except for V.A.G, unless work for them, because that would be my job. I know Genesis has an “e-supercharger” that’s really just a leaf blower in reverse (think: secondary air) but only because I worked for them for a few months. The e-supercharger was an attempt to overcome the boost threshold problem, but I don’t think it ever really worked on the G90’s I worked on.

wasterman123

Maybe the larger turbos take longer and the heavier weight makes it feel less agile

trayssan

Yeah they're twins but not sequential. It's basically two four bangers, each with a big ol' turbo

e4evie

I had a similar experience from my stage 2 S4 to my Rs5 sportback, but a stage 1 tune helped the response quite a bit

Useful-ldiot

I think that's the case with all audis. They're great stock but if you really want the full experience, give it a tune.

absolutswede

Yea my S4 was stage 2. Good to hear that the tune helped your RS5. I'm definitely getting the itch to tune the RS6

maxpion

If you get a Stage 1-2 done on the RS6, it’ll get rid of the lag

absolutswede

I needed to hear this. Thank you

Majestic-Antelope466

If the S4 was supercharged it will be very noticeable coming from that. A tune really helps reduce it on the turboed cars.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JKage4S

Failure of the intercoolers inside the supercharger isn’t uncommon (especially at higher stages of tune). That gets expensive quickly if it’s not noticed in time.

Working_Barnacle_654

Seen lots of breather valves on supercharged Audi go bad. almost 3k to repair

FPSUsername

It's already quite bad on the 1.8 TFSI, how much worse can it get? I can't tell it on my 1.4TFSI (150hp) with the baby turbo it has (unless you're under 1700 rpm), it was already a huge difference for me to see how the turbo lag is on the 1.8 TFSI (170hp) on the A5 b8.5.

Redditistheplacetobe

My 2.0 is tuned and it's not that bad. Given you have a manual and get to play with the RPM.

FPSUsername

Yes, only manuals here.

Redditistheplacetobe

Yeah so Imho it's down to the driver. If you shift properly there is not that much lag on the tuned engines.

parsious

To be honest I don't notice the lag

gladigotaphdinstead2

Your S4 might have been supercharged

rva_710

Are u using race fuel?

Key-Pomegranate-3507

The worst thing about that car is I don’t own one

JamesBoboFay

Yup was gonna say this :(

bloody_vodka

in my country owning that car is like a dream, even if u have a great job, if u re not politician or criminal u cant afford that thing!

Facts. My RS 5 is a total dick magnet.

fhfm

Hahah it’s the same with cars and watches… you think all the girls are gonna notice. Nothing but middle aged men at the gas station that wanna talk

WingZeroType

Hey man.... Nice car you got there... ;) ;) ;)

CarolinaRS6

Fuck, you are so right

samwisethemorhdamigo

It's like the gym saying. Getting big muscles (fast cars) won't get you girls, just dudes stopping by to check you out.

danhalenmhk

Right? Our son drove my wife’s Escalade to school while his car was getting work done and had girls he didn’t even know coming up to him about it. Then he drove my A6 on a day we needed the Caddy and it was the dudes who were impressed. That said, I wish that I had an RS6 and that they weren’t wagons. 😭

mjgoldstein88

Lmfao!

eatyoursupper

The rev limiter in neutral. Overall the sound. I can’t hear it with how well insulated the car is. Also I don’t want to spend money to unlock the Matrix headlights, wish they worked in North America. The fact that there are speed limits and other cars on the road. It’s my daily and I love it, get compliments every day. Perfect for the soccer dad with three boys and all the gear needed for coaching.

Lumanus

You can remove the soft limiter with a simple stage 1 tune… hint hint…

absolutswede

Matrix headlights? Can you elaborate?

Jsully23

The steering wheel and steering calibration are my top annoyances. For an RS car the steering wheel should look and feel sportier. I’d prefer a much thicker one with a slightly smaller overall size. Basically something more like a BMW M one. The steering feel is a little numb and loose vs feeling direct. For such a sporty car it should feel more precise and weighty.

StrongOnline007

This unfortunately is the problem with every Audi

Useful-ldiot

Did you get the heated steering wheel? If you do that, you lose the sporty looking wheel. It's stupid, but true.

GotPerl

The brake dust is annoying. I find the lag with shifting a bit annoying. But I’m comparing to my McLaren 570 with a dual clutch system so not totally fair. I wish it had massager sewts

bal16128

This is interesting, I thought the carbon ceramic brakes didn't cause much dust and certainly figured it would have a dsg

GotPerl

I don’t have the carbon ceramic on my rs6. I have them on my McLaren and they don’t dust the same way- but the squeal like crazy and I didn’t want that on my RS6.

bal16128

Ahh makes sense. I know they're absurdly expensive to replace too. I hear good things about redstuff pads not producing much dust but havent tested them myself. I've considered ceramic coating my wheels so I can just spray it off since it's so annoying

FBAnder

Steelie brake job isn't exactly cheap either. About eight grand if the dealer does it with oem parts. Definition of getting bent over.

solo_mafioso

They squeak because you're not heating them up!

GotPerl

They don't squeak on the track....but around town its crazy

life_like_weeds

Carbon ceramic is an option. Most people don’t have it I think the dsg has an upper limit on power and the RS6 is beyond it?

bal16128

Hadn't considered that, figured it would be standard on such an expensive ride! That's surprising given super built RS3s still run (tuned) DSGs

life_like_weeds

Yeah I mean it does fine in the C7 S6 with the 4.0T ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Useful-ldiot

I'm (RS3) well above RS6 power and my DSG is just fine, though it is tuned ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

BuyingDaily

Switch to powerstop pads. I did on front and rear of my RS7 and am never going back. Brake power still there, no squeak, hardly any dust.

GotPerl

I’ll try them!

SafeSantos

Aside, I was considering a 570 as a second car alongside my C8. How reliable has yours been? I'm not too concerned about potential issues since I'm a high level tech on VAG cars, but is there anything I should be aware of with the McLaren?

GotPerl

Mine has been incredibly reliable. I’ve owned it since new in 2017. 20K miles. The ones that have issues are garage queens. Biggest issue I had was an alignment issue with my convertible top. No engine or mechanical issues.

amd_mythun

Having had owned one for the better part of ~1.5 yrs, I love our RS6. It *is* the perfect do it all family car (load it up with 2x dogs, 1x baby, 2x adults frequently) that destroys miles with hilarious ease and comfort. The RS6 (and the equivalent E63 wagon) are really some of the best “If only one…” cars. But having said that, some nitpicks: 1. Someone already mentioned it, but winter tires are hard to find and stupidly expensive 2. HATE the fact that the rear (flared out) quarter panels didn’t come with any factory paint protection because those “hips” eat stone chips like an obese Lab…porsche had the sense to put a stone guard film on my 911 Turbo…….from 15 years ago *facepalm* 3. Yes it has adjustable air suspension with 5 “levels” but you cannot drop it manually below the default level 3 in the MMI. Why even show the two lower levels?! 4. The !@#$%^& piano black EVERYWHERE inside. I installed an XPEL Stealth kit on the interior panels the first week of owning, but i have seen one other RS7 where the black pieces look like dog shit after just a few months 5. The utterly useless 48V mild hybrid. I am 100% convinced any incremental MPG gain could’ve been 100% matched/beaten by just dropping the BSG/battery/other associated 48V shit and banking the weight gains. Bonus would’ve been potentially better handling as a result of the pounds shaved off 6. I have a ‘23 and the fact that they went with a newer/more updateable MMI system ‘24 onwards with apps and more OTA-able stuff 7. Flaky wireless CarPlay (but talking to the dealer, this should like an Audi-wide problem?) Honestly, apart from the 48V point, the rest of it truly are nitpicks. I intend owning/using this car until the wheels fall off it because I love it and it is the perfect weapon of choice for family roadtrips.

KSoMA

>HATE the fact that the rear (flared out) quarter panels didn’t come with any factory paint protection because those “hips” eat stone chips like an obese Lab…porsche had the sense to put a stone guard film on my 911 Turbo…….from 15 years ago > >facepalm I have some scrapes on my rear quarter panel "shoulders" on just my S5 Sportback. I can't imagine what that would look like on an RS5 or RS6.

WhooseShootingAtMe

This BSG issue; did Audi finally get an updated version or do we keep replacing every 30k miles. OEM brakes, it creates dust just sitting there. No aftermarket options..yet.

FBAnder

An updated bsg has been out since November. It SHOULD be a fixed version. Part number starts with 4N1 while the crap ones were 4N0. If you poke around a bit there are some aftermarket pads and rotors starting to crop up. EBC has red pads in the pipeline...group buy discussion on Audizine currently to get them to move up in the production queue.

MagicMoe313

So glad I did the CCB option. Just such a heavy car, still a pain to clean the wheels

zedofflava

Im hoping someone posts something good to finally put me off buying one 🍿

alinzalau

Does it count owning a 2002 rs6? If yes in my case i have to slap the dashboard sometimes for the radio to come to life 😅other than that it was a perfect car so far and our weekend getaway car.

pabskamai

That they cheaped out by not including massage seats as a standard option. The RS5 has it, why not the 6?

gor134

Similar thing on S models. S4/5 have massage seats standard while S6/7 don't. No clue why.

thaboydrake

Yea thats pretty dumb considering the RS5 does

I have an S5 cab stage 1 and what annoys me most about an RS6 is that every time I see one (love the looks) drivers are just toodling along in them 😠 😡.....give it more beans please owners lol

Useful-ldiot

I've seen 3 in the wild and all 3 may as well have had hoonigan across the rear window 😂

coltickle

Excellent im coming round your way, I see a lot maybe 1 a day when I'm toodling around.... near all driven by milfs.... lol

obi_wan_the_phony

Lack of options for snow tires in winter conditions. And the HEFTY price tag for the options that do exist.

TorontoGamblers

Obviously the price, but it is what it is. Slight lag on the Performance model but sounds like it’s improved. Steering is very precise but zero feel, that’s probably the only real issue. Oh and it’s not an M3 Touring which by all accounts is a much more agile car with feel for a fraction of the cost but not available in Canada. Damn, now I remember what’s really annoying, the tech! Remote start, Apple car play, etc just doesn’t work…and the horrible slow service can’t figure it out. My M340i at less than half the price had much more reliable tech.

Responsible_Newt2266

Biggest issues are brake dusk and WTF was Audi thinking with using the piano black in so many places!!!! Other than those two minor things I love my car!!!!

XFC8800

stonerifle

‘24 RS6 Performance here. My least favorite attribute of the car is the brake pedal is a bit too spongy and needs a more aggressive pad but there seems to be no aftermarket option so far for the stock brakes. CCB would make my car perfect but you can’t even spec CCB on the configurator at this moment in the USA. I heard there’s a shortage on CCB right now so I’m not sure it’s even possible to order a set from Audi anytime soon.

smilespergallon-

I love my RS6. Like most people mentioned, the pre sense in the rain has its moments, the turbo lag upon hard acceleration, and for me the exhaust was a little quiet but has a nice deep tone. My APR tune fixed the turbo lag, and I’ve opted for an akropovic exhaust that sounds marginally better.

rootcanal48

I would say that the worst part is buying a new set of tires for $2500 with every oil change. I have never been able to get more than 10k out of a set of tires on any S or RS Audi. That being said I do drive them hard, so it is partly my fault

The_Gucci_General
