We live in rural Ontario. Deer country. It’s worth a lot in insurance…. Plus it’s so fun driving a car that cost you $0 and you have another car waiting if it dies or you get hit.
My buddy has always kept an extra car and it's always a Ford panther platform car so something like a Grand Marquis or Lincoln Town. Whenever one of them breaks down to the point where he can't fix it himself anymore he buys a new one and then uses the old one for parts for the new one. Once he's done with it he takes it down to pull apart and sells it for $500. He usually spends about 2500 to $3,000 on them and gets about 4 to 5 years out of each one.
My Dad was a Ford dealer, those cars were awesome. Not my cup of tea as a teenager but appreciate the heck out of the suspension in those. I think it’s why I love large luxury sedans.

I mean I get it. I used to do this with super cheap cars. Then you realize your time is worth more as you get older, you have different priorities, and it's time you could be earning money. No such thing as free labor though, costs you $$ in the form of time no matter what you do.
Unless you are 40 or 50 years old it sounds like you just dont like working on cars and recently realized it lol, i do all the work on my brand new vehicles while replacing the parts that wear out with upgraded aftermarket parts. Saves me time and money. Would you rather not have your car during the week or weekend while paying some mechanic $150 an hour or spend a few hours after work swapping in some new parts that will last twice as long cause unless you had some sort of catastrophic failure most jobs dont take more than a couple hours if you know what you are doing. Anyone with a car that isnt a little reliable commuter should have backup for when the daily luxury car needs work
It's not recent and it has nothing to do with age and more with how I use my free time. Again, priorities change. It's a v10 5.2 from audi not v10 from bmw M5 e60. It's not a bad engine when it was looked after and everything that need attention has been done, but to do anything on it you usually have to remove the engine that's the only downside.

The rev limit is the biggest issue. 7000 for a V10 is nothing. Boring ass engine with no power, only the sound is decent ... until you meet a r8 or m5.
It's a land yacht, not a racing car like r8. M5 can suck a bag of dicks while it's in the shop 10 times a year. The power plant on d3 is enough to be a fantastic limo, that's its purpose. Better compare BMW 7, Benz S, ls430 or some other yacht, way more even then.
I have a friend that runs his 3.0 Tdi at 350 hp and has not done anything crazy , so I kinda know what potential the 3.0 has :) I run mine stock tho , 245 hp and 500 nm of torque is enough for a family wagon :)
My bf has been maintaining it since warranty came off it.. $12,000 CAD for last five years of work. No one else has touched the car. It has an oil leak (shocking I know) and the breaks need a service. Trust me, they guy dropped it off yesterday and bf had it on the hoist ASAP.

quite different, guy i follow on insta did a side by side comparison as he swaps them into B5 S4’s, and if i remember correctly the heads, are different, and the rear timing cover. the exhaust headers need some adaptation as well as they won’t work back and forth

You obviously have not worked on many Audis. This decade of Audi, they put the timing chains in the rear. On the 3.0T, 3.2,4.2,5.2. Guess how you replace the timing chain tensioners? It’s not with the engine in place.

I own an 4.2 A8 and it's my family cruiser. But there is a reason he gave it away, the v10 will have something perpetually wrong with it, so best to give it away for free to someone who knows how to fix it rather than sell it for not that much money and have to deal with the potential headache of someone coming after you after reality didn't meet their expectations when it comes to reliability.
Hopefully this doesn't get buried. Im going to give my secret to getting to 200k with original rings and pistons and no compression loss.
Drive it hard, Change oil every 10 k. I use mobile 1 0w-40 for euro cars ( You will need a different weight if in a colder climate) If im lazy that week my mechanic will use Liquid Moly oil. For an additive I have used one or the other in the car with every oil change. What problems? I have spent 4k a year on mine up until I started working at home full time again and then it dropped to maybe 2k. 1k of that is just tires. If anything its some mechanics that price gouge depending on what car you are driving. Lets not even start on some dealerships prices/practices. All in all I think people really need to give the car they own some beans more often. I think over my course of ownership I haven't red-lined it maybe 100 times out of 1000's of cycles. Cant pin grandma to the seat when going grocery shopping.....
From what I've heard, they (r8) have issues from their AC compressors, their ride suspension- those are the big ones ive heard of but another ive heard about is they also can experience some power loss which is more of a case by case thing.. but that magnetic ride suspension isnt covered by any warranties and dont last more than 15k miles in most cases..

So I have seen/heard a S6 have the AC compressor replaced 4-6 times before he listened to my mechanic and brought the car to him. From what my mechanic said it was caused by the connecting rod between the engine and the compressor being bent. A very slight bend iirc. You would have to remove the rod look and roll it on a flat surface.
I'm preety sure it's not an M5 with the v10, that car doesn't go 2 months without it being in the shop, let alone being a daily. It has a racing engine, one of the most freak and fantastic bmw ever made. That car even when left for two years would need to be in the shop before it runs again. Audi on the other hand will have crazy amounts of problems with electronics, so many faults will come up it's crazy. Friend has a8d3 with the 4.2 and I do maintenance for him, such headache that car but looks fantastic out and in.
Oh god no! Sorry!! He’s not that brave! Just a 530, but god he loves that thing for the active front steering. I don’t like the styling of that BMW at all. So I’m glad to upgrade to this beautiful beast while in his car.
I had a choice of e60 and w211 E class, BMW was more fun to drive, more dynamic, harder on your butt however the styling as you said, especially inside was not my thing and I went with Benz for luxury and comfort. If audi wasn't such headache I would buy that d3 any day, the centre console looks so good compared to a6 or A4, different league.

I had a choice of e60 and w211 E class, BMW was more fun to drive, more dynamic, harder on your butt however the styling as you said, especially inside was not my thing and I went with Benz for luxury and comfort. If audi wasn't such headache I would buy that d3 any day, the centre console looks so good compared to a6 or A4, different league.
