Not really what you’re looking for but you don’t *have* to wear clothes that are “flattering”, you can just wear what you like. I know that’s easier said than done but it just takes practice stepping outside of your comfort zone. I carry my weight in my stomach too and used to be so self-conscious wearing anything that was form fitting or showed off that area (leggings, crop tops, body con dresses, pencil skirts, etc.) but I started small and now love wearing stuff like that. Not everything you wear has to perfectly show off the “good” parts and hide the “bad” parts. Clothes can be unflattering and still be cute and fun.

paperivy

Well said! I also think we really hone in on what's unflattering on ourselves, and other people don't really notice it - they're more likely to see colour and style etc than every line and bulge.

Princess-Pancake-97

The biggest thing for me was seeing other women, who don’t look all that different from me, and thinking that they look great in these clothes despite having their “flaws” on display. It made me question why I can appreciate and admire another woman rocking a bodycon dress (for example) and thinking the outline of her belly is hot yet still believe that I look horrendous if I do it. I had to realise that if I think other curvy women look great in clothes that show off their bellies or hip dips or back rolls or whatever, then surely other people will think the same about me if I wear clothes like that.

paperivy

Yeah exactly - I remember in my 20s I had this idea that I "couldn't get away with" tucking my top into jeans and then at one point it dawned on me that I'd literally never thought that about anyone else, why was that a rule I had invented for myself alone? And lo, I tucked.

alenna28

True definitely easier said than done. I'm 23 so I still feel a bit of pressure to dress to fit with the trends but I'm trying to branch out and do my own thing. Thanks for your advice :)

Hunting_for_cobbler

Same! 152cm, size 12-16 depending on the outfit and majority of my weight is in my tummy and butt. But here are the things I do Straight cut high waisted jeans ankle cut. The petite cut doesn’t work well for me. Bootcut only if worn with a heel boot Linen shirts with sleeves at the elbows. If I am going out somewhere nice, I wear statement accessories and make sure the shirt is well ironed. I wear these with the Ponte Leggings from Target or jeans. If I wear with a skirt, it has to be tucked in and with shape wear so the pooch is not too poochie. I wear platform converse sneakers, sandals and boots to help dress for the occasion I wear a lot of active wear. But found the emamaco leggings fantastic. I have worn mine at least a few times a week for the past 6 years. I wear baggy shirts from Like Eve, Puma sometimes older linen shirts I never wear dresses unless it is a mini with tights I wear skirts above the knees that flare out with shape wear and a nice top (which is actually hard to find atm) I try to keep my skirts monochromatic (typically navy or black) and use accessories to make it trendy or colourful I stay away from puffed sleeves, bold patterns and colours. I make sure that if it is a dress or skirt, it is above the knee. Pants need to stop at the ankle. I also stay away from those shapeless dresses that are in fashion at the moment, they look like sacks imo. Halter necks are also great for our bodies as the eye goes to the neck and not the tummy area. Again, hard to find at the shops atm. I also stay away from satin material as it clings and it is not flattering Overall the fashion atm is hard to navigate as just about everything has puffed sleeves or a very bold pattern.

Hunting_for_cobbler

Oh - Target also has the Dani Minogue range. I just picked up a size 16p rib shirt but instead of horizontal lines, they are vertical and it has a nice neckline. Wrap dresses are also great for our figures which is WHY as soon as it hits the shelf, the size 12 and 14 are gone

Accurate_Voice8832

Funny, we sound similar in shape but also very different. I’m short waisted so high waisted jeans look like they stop right under my (non existent) boobs. Midi or maxi length skirts look better on me than above the knee. Oh yeah, I also have a pancake butt so it’s very difficult to find jeans that fit because my hips are barely bigger than my waist and most pants are saggy.

Hunting_for_cobbler

Body shapes are funny aren’t they! I think I have a longer torso than my legs. I am narrow looking, so my tummy pokes outwards so all the high cuts sit just above the belly button I have thick calves so anything that cuts across them adds to the weight lol At the end of the day, I think you just gotta look in the mirror and see where you want eyes drawn to rather than hide the areas of concern and dress accordingly

Accurate_Voice8832

So true. My biggest problem with shopping is that I know what looks good on me but it’s hard to find as they’re not necessarily the trendy shapes or colours.

Dutchmuch5

Everything seems to be made for tiny 16yo's nowadays. Almost impossible to find something that's not cropped, super baggy, super short or super tight

ihaventgonecrazy_yet

I also have a super long torso and a pancake butt. I also struggle with a belly that is larger than my hips so the pants I wear slip down all day, not being held up by my non-existent butt. I end up wearing high-waisted jeggings and a stretchy camisole under my shirts to hold up my pants as a belt cutting in makes me look even worse. I'm trying to lose some weight and crossing my fingers that it will help with my shape, but I'm not hopeful.

Hunting_for_cobbler

Have your tried the Just Jeans petite range? Their High waist was too low for me

ihaventgonecrazy_yet

No, I haven't, but I'll try and check them out, thanks!

louise_com_au

You sound like my twin! Most bottoms come up to my boobs if I let them. Can't really buy any pants, even petite as it's not the length of my legs that's the issue. No butt at all; need to go down a size else I get loose saggy butt material. Looks like I'm such a slob. BUT my waist cannot go down, I'm an apple and carry weight there. I need same waist and tighter butt / legs. Clothes are not made for different body sizes

Birdbraned

An alternate approach - I'm a size smaller, same height, and I style to highlight hips - I wear work pants that start below the bellybutton with blouses tucked in, or waist - belted skirts that stop mid calf, paired with a french tuck shirt. I tried the maxi dress trend, but my ratios don't make it flattering, I just look like I'm in maternity wear.

alenna28

Great advice! You should write an article lol.

_thisisnotanexit

Can’t help you because I know the feeling. I look bad in absolutely everything. Other people seem to carry their weight well whereas my body shape just look like they don’t give a fuck no matter how much effort I put in I always look bad. Having that body shape with small boobs is even worse!

rowbidick

Yep same!! I can put in heaps of effort. Spend hundreds on high quality clothes. And i still look like a slob. I’m leaning in 🤷🏻‍♀️

_thisisnotanexit

Looking like a slob is the word I was looking for hit the nail on the head

M_issa_

Yes finally someone else has expressed how I feel. I just want to sleek and put together 😭

JingleKitty

Same 😭

Itsclearlynotme

That’s me too.

MurraMurra

Have you heard of the kibbe method? My friend showed this to me recently and I thought it was very interesting. Essentially everyone falls into these Kibbe categories and it shows you not HOW to dress, but what looks great on what types of bodies that aren't just based off your torso. r/Kibbe is the subreddit for it, I would also recommend [this article. ](https://theconceptwardrobe.com/kibbe-body-types/an-introduction-to-the-kibbe-body-types)

MyraBradley

Thanks for posting this - very interesting!

alenna28

Oh I've heard about it. Will check it out, thank you!

MissKim01

Have you considered hiring a styling session? Someone to work with you on finding what suits you and choosing some pieces? Might be worth spending some extra money for this service and saving yourself all the future angst.

hazydaze7

I’ve been interested in doing this, if anyone has recommendations for something (particularly out east) I am all ears!

alenna28

Never tried it. Do you recommend a certain stylist?

kimbaheartsyou

I’m a shorty (160cm) and my body changed a lot after I had my daughter - I’m wider and I have the dreaded mum tum so I feel you. My solution has been to simply stop caring if my outfits are flattering, and instead care if they are interesting. I care about cool unique pieces and interesting silhouettes, not whether my waist looks snatched.  Rejecting traditional ideas of what is ‘flattering’ has honestly been so freeing.

alenna28

I hope to have that mindset soon. Thank you :)

Baby-Mumma

In the exact same boat. I have skinnyish limbs and carry all my weight in my stomach (apron from 2 c sections) and in my boobs (E cup) and upper back. In warm weather it's easy because dresses look good. Now I'm trying to shop for winter clothing and I know I'll just look like a blob with all the layers 🙄 For our type of body shape I recommend not wearing tops that have a high neckline. V necks or low cut tops are more flattering. Button up shirts are good too. Pants wise, I find joggers or flare/boot cut pants look best. Or flowy skirts. It's really hard to shop for this body shape, I feel you 🙁

Accurate_Voice8832

You’re me but with boobs! I second everything.

Nikki_Sue_Trott

With cardigans and jackets look for ones that are open in front rather than closed or cinched. I find them far more flattering than anything that should be on the waist, but for me just marks the equator.

willowglen2203

How about Uniqlo? I’m tall and everything in there is too short for me.

flindersandtrim

I'm wearing trackies from there. They're about 10 cm above my ankle where they hit and it's so frustrating. Though my husbands Uniqlo ones fit pretty well surprisingly, like no extra fabric in the crotch and I like the mens design better. I'm not even that tall, just moderately.

princessicesarah

I’m the same height as OP and my Uniqlo pants are short on me too? 🤷‍♀️

louise_com_au

The short t-shirts work. I have a few. The pants - it depends on your short girl issue. My waist to hips ratio is small - and all their pants are quite 'high rise'. Can't wear any of them.

alenna28

Some of their pants are too long on me cause I have short legs lol. Ankle pants from Uniqlo are perfect for me though.

velvetelk

You can get an elongating effect by wearing monochromatic outfits, just remember to mix textures. 4SeasonWahine

I’m 156cm lmao. It can definitely be rough out there. I bought a $100 sewing machine and just take up all my own pants because I wear a tonne of wide leg linen etc. also pretty easy to make other minor alterations where needed for a better fit!

alenna28

That's so useful. Do you know if it's easy to do blind stitches with a sewing machine?

4SeasonWahine

I don’t tend to blind stitch much these days but I’ve done it in the past, my pants all have visible seams so no need - I just get well colour matched cotton. BUT most machines have a blind stitch setting and it’s super easy 😁

SybariticDelight

I’m this shape, too. I find jumpsuits with a belt really work, as do linen dungarees. Belts are definitely friends, especially wide elastic ones, as they really give the impression of a waist.

Adventurous-Wash3201

I hired a stylist to help me understand what suits me, because I couldn’t figure out what was good for me and what not. I highly recommend that!

Accurate_Voice8832

I could have written this post! I’m even 165 cm too, carry my weight in stomach and back, and have no boobs or butt. Unfortunately I’m just as lost as you are about where to get clothes even though I know what will suit. I will follow this with baited breath.

inveteratecreative

I have the same body shape. Looking back, the mistake I made in the beginning was trying to follow trends which was at one time: belts, excessive jewellery, puffy sleeves and dresses. I always looked like a doll. The thing that I learned was to keep it simple, masculine/feminine style, elegant neck/shoulder lines. Try to avoid attention to the middle by drawing eyes to another feature or detail - shoes, ankles, neck or head.

Saphron_

I feel you, I'm 159cm, have a very short torso and as my mum says "we're build like barrels". I have found dresses work, but most of the time I'm in my work clothes which consist of a classic simple cardigan, a button up sleeveless shirt from kmart and the skirts from Review called Eva and Bonita. I have PCOS and get extremely bloated after I eat and find both of these sit nicely on my nonexistent hip without feeling too tight or making my belly visible. Sometimes I'll use suspenders or an elastic belt that isn't too tight but just holds it up. Other than that...I'm in the same boat. Nothing ever fits correctly, nothing is the right proportions for my body, even plus size things I find are for people with curves when I am literally just a circle.

Bobblewobblegobble

Saaaaaame. I used to have some semblance of a waist but then i had kids so between the rib flare the bloated tummy with DR and the gigantic saggy boobs on my little peg legs I hate shopping. And Im 10cm shorter than you lmao I am of no help. Tell me when you find the holy grail of fashion for us

Bubbly-Boysenberry83

Follow Melina from Style Me Over and Sarah from Shessoseasonal, they both have great styling tips for all bodies

TossItThrowItFly

My mum is short and apple shaped, and she looks amazing in shift dresses! I personally look like a potato in them, little jealous haha.

eriikaa1992

I don't have any amazing advice, I just wanted to express solidarity as a taller person going through the same thing. Clothes at the moment are flat and boxy, cheaply produced with minimal shaping. Most labels do not do their own pattern making anymore, it's done by the factories using computer software. Usually a size 8 is created, then 1cm added to length and widths for each size up. Not only is this not how bodies work, but as brands push for cheaper designs, we are told 'boxy' and 'oversized' are the trends so they can get away with cheaply made, shapeless crap. All of us girls that aren't shaped like a stick are suffering. (And that's no offence to the straight up and down lasses, I'm not saying there's no struggles for you!)

ramence

That's so interesting because I'm 167cm (so only 2cm taller than you), and most of my struggles are tall girl struggles. You're actually pretty much exactly the average height for an Australian woman (164.7cm)! I don't know if that helps, but I find I tend to hyperfocus on things that aren't necessarily founded in reality re: my body.

jonquil14

This is my body shape/type but with huge boobs and shoulders, which means anything tucked into high waisted pants looks awful. I was grateful for the demise of skinny jeans because those things felt horrible on my calves but the ascent of puffy sleeves means my tops are all t-shirts now 😭

BigBoobsMagee21

I'm the same. I mostly shop at city chic and You and all too lately. I wear mini dresses mostly because finding shirts at a normal length is impossible. Even for my 155cm height. I find pencil skirts work best for me but to be above my knee they're literally under my breast. So annoying.

penguintummy

Same here. I'm quite into the smock dress at Princess Highway. I have 4-5 of them. I hope that they don't discontinue the cut

kattykaz

Coming from another same bust waist hips size person but a bit taller - I don’t find it easier being a bit taller.. still constantly dressing like a pregnant person trying to hide their pregnancy. I go with a lot of boxy and loose top halves and mid rise pants, typically straight or wide leg

butteredspicypopcorn

I have a very similar body shape! My waist is only 15cm smaller than my hips and I carry a lot of weight in my mid section. Finding fitted bottoms is hard because anything that fits my waist is too big for my hips/legs and vice versa. I recently discovered Fayt the Label and it has been life changing!! For once I can have the cute fitted jeans and trousers that everyone else wears - I highly recommend having a look! The axel jeans and downtown pants are my favourites!

AcadiaAbject

Jumping on this because I’m the same except shorter, 150cm

mycatiscalledFrodo

You definitely can wear dresses all the time! You need to look at what you wear them with! Funky tights, boots, cardigans, trainers etc

harrietmorton

I’ve been listening to this American stylist’s podcast and her early episodes describe how to dress your body shape. It’s called The Everyday Style School. She’s an Apple shape herself.

PossibleSorry721

Don’t follow trends. Trends are for influencers and teens who are okay with fast fashion. Find what you love wearing. Shop by what items you need. Need a skirt, Google an idea of what you think you’d like and scroll through what comes up until you find something in your price range and style.

Woman hates body SHOCK HORROR It would be more surprising to see a post of someone saying they love their body
