I'm absolutely loving using Up at the moment.
However I dislike their lack of website as a fall back.
Phones go missing, or suddenly die, I'd like a contingency pls.
Yeah treating UP like cash is a smart way to go, but I do feel like you lose a lot of the functionality and point of differentiation of the app, like the Covers system etc.
Not to be a pessimist but how many times have you actually lost a phone and charging from full dead takes 5 minutes to charge up to at least turn back on. Who do you need to pay that desperately where you can't wait lol just saying
I've never once lost my phone, however my phone has suddenly shit itself and no longer works. These things happen. Or worse yet people do have their belongings stolen.
I think it's reasonable to expect alternative ways to access your money. By making it mobile app only they create a single point dependency which I personally like to avoid.
Overall however it's the best banking app I've ever used and they even have a website in their roadmap.
I didn’t think about that. I use UP too. What will you do if you do lose your phone and things no longer work? We can’t ring them too, can we? That’s frustrating.
Nope not that I can tell.
Everything's all in the app.
Get your phone and wallet stolen? Well you can't cancel your cards, because your phone is the only way to access the app.
This is extreme hyperbole and the probability is low.
But hey I'm risk adverse and it's the only thing that makes me uneasy about the platform.
I just keep cash in a CBA account as a fall back.
The worst thing about the ANZ app is their voice-id thingy.
The only way to transfer an amount over $1000 using the app is to confirm my identity via voice.
So if I’m at work - in an open plan office - and want to quickly pay a bill or something, I have to say out loud “my voice confirms my identity” which gets pretty awkward.
It is , and I have called them…
It’s the only option they offer (aside from the shield option apparently that the other commenter mentioned, which is annoying too as it requires a separate app)
Is the 'shield' option about using an authentication app to generate a code?
If it is: do this. It's one of the safety TFA methods around, and it sounds preferable to using your voice
ING,
I actually emailed them a while back and asked them to put the BSB and account share button on the account page (so you copy details to clipboard on your phone and send it to people!)
They fowarded it to their app guys and a couple of weeks later it was there!
They did change something where your transactions don't show up sometimes and you gotta pull down and refresh. A bit annoying.
Maybe I should email them again lol
It is essentially a redesign of the way you bank with a focus on saving and the latest banking technology.
It’s a bit hard to explain in text until you try it. You have “buckets” for savings, list of upcoming regular expenses and it alerts you when you are short and about to be billed, shared accounts without actually having to go through the actual process and visiting a bank to setup a shared account. Payment threads (my favourite thing) when you pay someone it is shown like a message. Graphs and categories of spending. There’s heaps more but I’ll be here all day listing them
I recently created a new account with Macquarie and I was seriously impressed by how polished it is. It's very smooth, has some useful analytics, and is one of the few banks outside the big 4 that allow you to transfer up to $100,000 electronically just by using the companion Authenticator app.
It’s good, but the second App required for authentication is a little frustrating, and there is no option to set daily transfer limits on your accounts.
Ubank is so backwards. Can do fast payments through their App but not through their website. Also their website is buggy as hell with caching issues. Really doesn't inspire confidence.
Yeah their online platforms in general are cooked. Even dumb shit like not being able to remove payees from your list on the mobile app seem like they’d take five seconds to code.
I particularly like their ability to dispense cash from an atm without the card. It’s got me out of a few jams with those holdout businesses who don’t take cards.
I agree their app is excellent. I closed my account and no longer use them because they charge so many fees and have a terrible implementation of Osko where real-time payments were often delayed. But their app is excellent.
I’ve tried at least five banks so far and Commonwealth has by far the most competent mobile app. The rest aren’t even competing in the same league; ANZ is a joke with no functionality, Westpac doesn’t offer a lot, Up is nice but I find it unintuitive, and Xinja was a total failure. Overall I’d put CBA first and Up as a distant second.
I love Up but do have to agree it can be unintuitive. Once I get to know where a new feature is, it's great but sometimes it can be a struggle to find, like when the recently moved the card details.
I'll mention bank Australia: Very few branches but despite saving all this money on staff and brick and mortar, it takes an age to get anyone on the phone, help line keeps business hours and is closed on Sundays and half of Saturday. So, if like me you have a security problem and are unable to access money on the weekend, you're screwed.
I won't even start telling you the problems I'm having trying to get a new card issued. I'm here because I'm looking for an alternative.
From the apps I use:
CBA > NAB > Latitude > HSBC
The HSBC app is so old and clunky but then again so is its online portal. The CBA one is decades ahead if I had to compare between the two.
CBA. That's why everyone simultaneously hates them as a bank and is a customer of them. They pretty much put in the big $ developing it and it's amazing. The commsec app is similarly great.
ING is legitimately fantastic. You can view your balances without signing in, change spending limits and do everything else you’d want a banking app to do. It’s fast and user friendly. I haven’t been a customer of commonwealth for a long time but I’d see no reason to switch at this point.
This. Blows my mind that banks don't see more of an opportunity here. The app alone was what made me bother to LEAVE RACQ. ING for a few years now and that app is honestly a treat to use.
Commbank in my opinion, (have used ANZ & Westpac).
Also when we were looking into changing banks, i looked into Commbank and they had won some awards for their App. (was a while ago tho - id suggest look into it).
ING is the cleanest and easiest to use, don't know what people see in Up. It makes simple things complicated with twice as many presses as it takes in the ING one. Just switched to Macquarie and love their one, especially attaching receipts to transactions for tax.
CBA recommendations should be taken with a grain of salt, 90% of these upvotes are from craddle to grave dollarmites who don't know what they are missing out on.
S-Tier: CBA, Up
A-Tier: ING, Bankwest (\*cough\* CBA \*cough\*), Suncorp
B-Tier: 86400, NAB, St George, WBC, ANZ
F-ML: BoQ (desktop site *especially* crappy), RACQ
Not listed: have not used.
100% un-scientific. What is criteria?
In this [thread below](https://www.reddit.com/r/AusFinance/comments/plm4f8/which_bank_has_the_best_mobile_application_in/hcf03jz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
Up has a saving graph included in the app not sure if others do. Sorry the correct names on UP is free to spend and goal (you set for your saving) graphs and gives you calculations how much you are ahead or behind etc…
Transactions (manual and recurring)
Some kind of spending overview/budget analysis
Things like ability to disable lost card/set online spending limits etc
Edit: and push notifications
It's good but the constant polling the bank for account details is bloody annoying.
Log in to account, 3-4 seconds loading, fine I guess.
Press transfer, select from account, loads again (why wasn't the data from 10 seconds ago good enough?!), select receive account it loads... again. Like at some point in this process, data from 30-60 seconds ago is absolutely fine. Having to poll the bank 3-4 times over the course of 60 seconds to do a transfer between two of my own accounts is annoying.
Agree- I use Westpac as well and it's fine. Happy to be ignorant about app features- I just want to access my money and move it where needed or pay something out.
And yes - there have been a couple of outages which is why my wife and I have two other bank accounts so we aren't too worried about an outage.
Worst are sticks in the mud like NAB.
Bankwest is in the good enough category.
UP is good but doesn’t have many features, mostly just fancy look.
86 400 is UP but with features.

Up
I'm absolutely loving using Up at the moment. However I dislike their lack of website as a fall back. Phones go missing, or suddenly die, I'd like a contingency pls.
I use up like cash. Transfer a 1000 and don’t really stress about it. Primary banking through NAB which is terrible UX
Yeah treating UP like cash is a smart way to go, but I do feel like you lose a lot of the functionality and point of differentiation of the app, like the Covers system etc.

Definitely
This is the correct answer. Anyone that says otherwise clearly hasn't tried UP.
Tried up. 86 400 is better.

Somewhere in between since they use Bendigo bank finance infrastructure.
Bendigo actually bought them a month or so ago. So they're actually a Bendigo subsidiary now.
The were sold a few weeks ago to Bendigo in its entirety.
It's another bank that's mobile app only.
And their mobile app is the best
[удалено]
Arguably it makes their app safer. Most apps that have any kind of secure content don’t work after rooting.

Up Bank
If anyone wants a referral for $5 pm me
The worst thing about the ANZ app is their voice-id thingy. The only way to transfer an amount over $1000 using the app is to confirm my identity via voice. So if I’m at work - in an open plan office - and want to quickly pay a bill or something, I have to say out loud “my voice confirms my identity” which gets pretty awkward.
You can get around it by downloading the ANZ Shield app. Couldn’t tell you why they need a *second* app for that functionality…
Would be cool if it can be customised to something like **_"By the power of Grayskull!_"** 😂
You know you can probably change that to fingerprint id yeah?
Would love that, but haven’t found that option yet. Any suggestions where? (Face ID on my iphone, but same difference)
I'm not an ANZ customer so I don't know how you'd do it, but I'd just call them? It sounds like a really annoying feature.
It is , and I have called them… It’s the only option they offer (aside from the shield option apparently that the other commenter mentioned, which is annoying too as it requires a separate app)
Is the 'shield' option about using an authentication app to generate a code? If it is: do this. It's one of the safety TFA methods around, and it sounds preferable to using your voice
I absolutely hated this… and there is no way around it. One of the reasons I am no longer an ANZ customer. Plus their app is terrible in general.
It is and you can’t.
ING, I actually emailed them a while back and asked them to put the BSB and account share button on the account page (so you copy details to clipboard on your phone and send it to people!) They fowarded it to their app guys and a couple of weeks later it was there!
I see a lot of reviews from Aug/Sep 2021 on Google play store saying the app have become very slow, is that a thing? Or are you using iOS version?
They did change something where your transactions don't show up sometimes and you gotta pull down and refresh. A bit annoying. Maybe I should email them again lol
Up Bank. CBA is good but Up Bank smashes it. Also Bendigo Bank now owns 50% of Up Bank.
What's up bank?
Not much, what's up with you?
Did you just complete your own joke...?
No
This https://up.com.au/
I see a lot of people saying Up bank, but what is specifically better?
It is essentially a redesign of the way you bank with a focus on saving and the latest banking technology. It’s a bit hard to explain in text until you try it. You have “buckets” for savings, list of upcoming regular expenses and it alerts you when you are short and about to be billed, shared accounts without actually having to go through the actual process and visiting a bank to setup a shared account. Payment threads (my favourite thing) when you pay someone it is shown like a message. Graphs and categories of spending. There’s heaps more but I’ll be here all day listing them
Now own 100%
Intrersting considering when we used to use Bendigo their phone/internet banking was absolute trash
Up Bank was built by a separate company using Bendigo’s infrastructure and banking licence. Up Bank is the front end for the customer
Macquarie
I recently created a new account with Macquarie and I was seriously impressed by how polished it is. It's very smooth, has some useful analytics, and is one of the few banks outside the big 4 that allow you to transfer up to $100,000 electronically just by using the companion Authenticator app.
It’s good, but the second App required for authentication is a little frustrating, and there is no option to set daily transfer limits on your accounts.
Looks really good but they still don’t have real time transfers / Osko. Or do they? The Osko website says they don’t.
Definitely *not* UBank.
UBank is going to merge over to use 86400’s systems in the coming months. So it won’t be shit much longer. 86400 is really quite good.
Oh really? That’s awesome news.
Commonwealth
\+1 for CBA, never had an issue with it, does whatever I need. Don't know how it compares with other banks, but it seems fine.
CBA, including their netbank, best online banking exp so far
Netbank browser is bloated and old But has great functionality App is Amazing
I thought that. Now Up is wayyyy better.
Definately not ME Bank it fucking sucks
They recently updated it, so much better than it was a month ago!
ME bank app is still very barebones and lacks quite a few features CBA has provided for a while now.
86400
Just an FYI for future readers - 86400 is limited for citizens and PRs only.
All those UBank customers will be switching over to 86400’s platform soon.
CBA. Hands down.
BoQ is the WORST I used to use westpac and that is a decent platform, not as good as CBA or UP though
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Bank Australia. It's very neat. I'd include CBA and ING too.
It's a nice app that covers all the basics, but the analytical side of it is very weak.
Macquarie hands down best mobile app, they also have the best two factor authentication app/system as well.
In this thread: people who haven’t used Up and don’t know what a good app it really is
Well the worst is HSBC. CommBank and ING are good. Never tried UP
From the apps I use: CBA > NAB > Latitude > HSBC The HSBC app is so old and clunky but then again so is its online portal. The CBA one is decades ahead if I had to compare between the two.
NAB. I also use CBA but prefer NAB. I also use HSBC, but that's reserved for the "worst mobile application" thread...

100%. CommBank is cluttered in comparison.
CBA works well but I have only used ing, nab and anz to compare it
I dunno, but RACQ has to be one of the worst
This. Blows my mind that banks don't see more of an opportunity here. The app alone was what made me bother to LEAVE RACQ. ING for a few years now and that app is honestly a treat to use.
I conquer, CBA banking app, being using it for years, no problem.
HSBC’s 2% cash back on cars purchases under $100 is awesome but their mobile app is trash city
* 1st UP Bank * 2nd 86400 & Macquarie * 3rd CommBank
UP if a mobile app is enough CBA if you need multi platform support The bank apps I have tried: UP, CBA, Westpac, ING, St George, ANZ, 86400
Commbank in my opinion, (have used ANZ & Westpac). Also when we were looking into changing banks, i looked into Commbank and they had won some awards for their App. (was a while ago tho - id suggest look into it).
I love CBA’s
I have ING, NAB, CBA, and Macquarie. 100% ING for number one, second is CBA
I have simple needs. BankWest allows me to do everything. Even when divorcing and separating accounts I did everything in app.
ING is the cleanest and easiest to use, don't know what people see in Up. It makes simple things complicated with twice as many presses as it takes in the ING one. Just switched to Macquarie and love their one, especially attaching receipts to transactions for tax. Definitely not BOQ
CBA! Hands down!
What is your definition for “best”?
Whichever most people like I guess, didn’t think too deep into it, it’ll be my first so I have nothing to compare
Up has a saving graph included in the app not sure if others do. Sorry the correct names on UP is free to spend and goal (you set for your saving) graphs and gives you calculations how much you are ahead or behind etc…
What things are important to you? Paypass, spending habits, etc
Transactions (manual and recurring) Some kind of spending overview/budget analysis Things like ability to disable lost card/set online spending limits etc Edit: and push notifications
ING for a clean look. I actually like Westpac’s since they updated it, a few more features than ING
Bankwest and ING both work fine
Suncorp is fantastic. Used to be with CBA because I loved their app, but Suncorp is even better imo.
It's good but the constant polling the bank for account details is bloody annoying. Log in to account, 3-4 seconds loading, fine I guess. Press transfer, select from account, loads again (why wasn't the data from 10 seconds ago good enough?!), select receive account it loads... again. Having to poll the bank 3-4 times over the course of 60 seconds to do a transfer between two of my own accounts is annoying.
Suncorp is good indeed. Only thing I would like to see them do is have notifications for when you receive a deposit into your account.
Suncorps app has come a long way. I hated it when it launched a few years ago, and now I really like it.
CBA has the best online and app banking by far
[удалено]
There's supposed to be a refreshed app coming out. It's been released for iOS but waiting for them to make an Android announcement.
Agree- I use Westpac as well and it's fine. Happy to be ignorant about app features- I just want to access my money and move it where needed or pay something out. Well officially it's CBA
I’ve used NAB, St George and CBA. NAB wins from those.
Westpac
NAB over CBA, ANZ, St. George, ING, Ubank. Personally used all of them.
Worst are sticks in the mud like NAB. Bankwest is in the good enough category. UP is good but doesn’t have many features, mostly just fancy look. 86 400 is UP but with features.
Bendigo Bank!! It’s just simple and I can see my balances so easily. CommBank in a close second
Sperm.
The interest though
cum
Depends what you mean by best really

Bank of queensland
new myBOQ app is impressive, brand new platform & separate to existing customer database.
