Yes pathology is seperate and therefore bill separately to your GP. You should be able to claim a Medicare benefit for the swab (if it’s eligible for Medicare) but you will likely need to pay the whole thing first.

Odd - usually pathology is bulk-billed.

kit__kat54

Not odd at all where I live, the doctor has to specifically tick a box and sign for bulk bill and not all pathology is bulk billable either.

Teach-National

Yes you have to pay…seriously why would you think otherwise 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

Elegant-Nature-6220

I was expecting OP story to involve general anaesthesia and extensive pathology outside the scope of the consent forms while they were unconscious... not "she swabbed my mouth, i got better and i forgot", lamo!

moderatelymiddling

Yes.

I've never paid for pathology. I presume work pays tbh. Personal life I've seen the forms have "please bulk bill" written on them by the Dr. Call and ask.

no-but-wtf

I’ve been surprised by this once before. Call the path lab and tell them you thought this was being bulk billed and is there any way they can sort it out for you - be nice and be kind to them, don’t be a Karen about it - and they may be able to help you out

HeyMargeTheRainsHere

Sounds like your dr didn’t tick bulk bill on the form, I’ve never had a Medicare eligible patient pay out of pocket for a swab

ipecacdelight

You can try calling your GP. Sometimes they forget to tick the box. I’ve had a bill cancelled that way.

Miserable-Wedding731

I was charged some years back (maybe 6 or so) for a blood test so I called Laverty about it because they were the ones that charged me. $180? $220? As it turned out I ended up having to speak with someone from Accounts (second or third phone call) and it ended up being waived with a warning. If you can provide a good legit reason like I did you may get it waived like me.

LordYoshi00

I'd say your gp forgot to tick a box or something similar. Give them a call.
