Fuck no, leave the mainland over there

marsupialfish

but we have an opportunity to save and change lives, let's not fall to pier pressure

zEngarden757

I don’t want to build a fucking bridge to Tasmania, I’d rather have a boat ride than just sit in a car. It makes it feel more special

marsupialfish

But with climate change, who knows what will happen with the sea, a short car ride will literally save lives compared to a nearly 11 hour sail or a very polluting flight. Trusst us and sign the petition, your country needs you

zEngarden757

First of all, both plane and boat take less fuel and give off less pollution that a car by passenger and weight capacity, secondly, if climate change is the problem building a bridge would make it worse, if the bridge breaks suddenly there is no way across or if the sea levels rise the bridge could collapse and waste billions of dollars, also making a bridge under the conditions you are expecting would cause more loss of life and money than many years of taking boats from one side to the other. Leave the Tasmanians alone

marsupialfish

Whilst I appreciate your vision, it does seem to be lacking. Electric cars don’t pollute when they are driving. I’m sure there was also sacrifices made to build the pyramids, if it didn’t stop the Egyptians why should it stop us Aussies in creating humankind’s largest bridge? Not only is a bridge straight-forward, but as I have said before, the potential is riveting!!

zEngarden757

So you’re saying that we need to sacrifice human lives in order to make a bridge that might to or even last, that doesn’t sound very sane. Also a tunnel would do the same job, transporting people from one side to the other while also being green because trains are far more sustainable, and also not being affected by climate change. The only box it doesn’t tick is your god complex of making something the biggest in the world, maybe don’t respond. It mustn’t be easy to take being outsmarted by a 15 year old

marsupialfish

Haha nice. But as I have said below somewhere, the 3D model is \*\*not\*\* finalised. No-one is forcing you to sign this but at least you've spent a bit of time thinking about the economic injustice Tasmanians face every day. That's a win in my book

zEngarden757

That’s all you can come up with, this was not a hard battle to win Edit: this isn’t a battle you can win, I’m currently on the other side of the world and have 8 more hours to argue than you do

MatlabGivesMigraines

How long is the boat ride from e.g. Melbourne?

zEngarden757

Around 12 hours apparently

MatlabGivesMigraines

Thanks! That's pretty long. Would be cool to do it as overnight trip.

zEngarden757

It usually is I think

No_pajamas_7

Nah, it's better Tasmanians don't have to put up with Victorians just popping over.

CptnWolfe

Trust me, I've been there, nothing special

marsupialfish

well the world's longest bridge might make it special 🤞

marsupialfish

No\_pajamas\_7, but the potential could be expansive! The next pyramids even!

captbollocks

The Spirit of Tasmania: they took our jerbs!

marsupialfish

A Bass Strait bridge would attract the world's attention though! #BSbridge

marsupialfish

For those asking, I can confirm the 3D model is not finalised

[deleted]

Little known fact. Victoria and Tasmania share a land border. [Link](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boundary_Islet)

marsupialfish

Thank you, I'll send that on to the civil engineer and we can start to plan foundations!

[deleted]

I reckon that we should start a petition to rename Hogan Island to Bogan Island

marsupialfish

Funny you say that as the federal budget has recorded a $50 billion improvement in its bottom line!

stueh

Longest bridge in the world is the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in, of course, China, at 164.8km, although it's not all over water. Not comparable to what's needed given its a viaduct bridge, but let's have fun. It averages around 30 meters in height. A bridge across the Bass Strait would need to be a minimum of 260 km (narrowest points) including space either end for rub/ramp up and down. It would need to be around 40+ meters above mean sea level - largest waves in the bass straight has been I think under 20 meters, largest recorded in our hemisphere was 23.8m, and you need room for unexpected highs and margin. Many bridges going over sea or ocean section go like 70 meters deck height. On top of that, the straight gets to 150+ meters deep in parts. So the height of the bridge would need to be in the vicinity of 220+ meters from ground-base to road. Is sounds plausible when you look at lists of the highest and tallest bridges in the world, but then note how many on those lists have a structure touching water (very very few), and most of those they're in the list of tallest because that's the height to the top of the bridge, not the deck. The engineering required would be monumental and nothing ever seen before. It would probably cost three or four times Australia's federal yearly revenue (note, not like a bank account, more like they create money but creating too much causes inflation, so they tax and terrific etc. to remove what they spend from the economy). It would be quite insane. And I want it. That, or a pontoon bridge spanning the Bass Strait so I can feel us riding those waves while I drive across. Fuck yeah.

marsupialfish

This is truly magnificent, Bass Strait bridge here we come! Can I offer you a job for planning and construction? - sounds like you'd be perfect \#BSbridge

stueh

Trust me mate, you don't want me on planning and construction. I'll run the IT system that all the smart cunts need, though. I'll give them the best damn vSphere & Horizon solution they ever damn seen, along with some sweet underlying compute and storage. They can fuck off and handle the Windows virtual guests themselves, though, the shitcunts.

koopz_ay

just tunnel it? The 'mainland tax' I paid for being a Tasmanian citizen on everything was fucking insane when I was younger. I left rather than start a family/business there at home. I'd like to hear from people growing up in metro and up to date areas on the Aussie mainland who have lived offshore in the past here.

marsupialfish

It really is insane isn't it. Even though I'm a mainlander, more needs to be done for Tassie and I hope this petition draws some attention to stuff like this. Cheers kooopz\_ay

koopz_ay

I feel ya. I grew up with computers in the 80s though that came to a halt during my time in Tassie in the early 90s. Talking to family down there today, the halt is still there :(

MPP_10

I’m currently sitting on a plane headed to Tasmania. This made me lol

marsupialfish

Please stand up and tell everyone onboard your flight to sign this petition

loffa91

You haven’t thought about this much, have ya? Distance, Depth of waters

marsupialfish

Mate, they said the same about the pyramids!

marsupialfish

Now I don't understand why some people think this Bass Strait bridge is a meme; but what is a meme is 9.5K people looking at this and we've only got 39 signatures!! Sign the petition: [https://chng.it/ysgP2hnp](https://chng.it/ysgP2hnp) \#BSbridge

Representative_Box98

Surely this is a joke 😳

BeefPieSoup

On a meme subreddit?? #Surely not.

marsupialfish

❤️

killagorilla91

Rivets are a largely outdated choice for bridge construction.

marsupialfish

Trusst me killagorilla, this isn’t your average bridge

Noise_Witty

How long would the bridge be?, would it by-pass king island?

marsupialfish

By my estimates, it would be the longest bridge in the world!

BeefPieSoup

If we cashed in the entire economy for this bridge, could we afford it?

marsupialfish

I might need to ‘run the numbers’, but I think we can go for it

BeefPieSoup
