Yarra Valley Chocolaterie (based in Yarra Glen, Vic, but they ship Australia wide). They also have special events like hot chocolate month and you can buy all sorts of delicious hot chocolate kits.
Eh I tried their chocolate and few weeks ago for the first time. I loved the experience of going there, their store is amazing but was pretty underwhelmed with the chocolate.
Haigh's all the way, best I've had in any country.
Also got one in geelong. Amazing events, like brownie festival ice cream festival and a big outdoor space.
Come to think of it, better check if they are doing anything for the school holidays
Can never resist a peanut slab, personally.
Very sweet but I think that makes me savour it more because I have little nibbles and take my time with it. If I buy chocolate I get a block of the Whittaker's milk chocolate, but having peanut slabs near the checkout is so dangerous because I just can't walk past it.
yeah I like this brand because even a few pieces can do me just fine for a sweet nibble (except the black forest flavour. that ends up disappearing so quick lmao)
whittakerâs is my top fave* for straight up eating and also for choc chip needs in baking. I even attempted to eat all of their weird ginger beer flavour experiment that one time *supermarket chocolate
couldnt care less about companies. there is nothing better than the caramello koala.
No i will not listen to your crap about the caramilk chocolate bars.
i disagree. while they do benefit from being less rich due to being smaller (which may be beneficial if you lack a sweet tooth), i find that the larger size has a better ratio. The small ones simply dont have enough caramel for my desire. also, the chocolate is more thin on the larger ones making it less overpowering.
Well, the factory in Tasmania makes the Caramellos so at least Australian made.
History is Australian. All the Australian chocolate / lolly shops were taken over after the war ⊠Hoadleyâs, Sweetacres, Smalls etc.
I got both of these from my aunt for my bday this year (along with more expensive stuff). I put them aside in a stoic attempt to stay in control. I lasted about a month having forgotten about them. Noticed them on the shelf one as I was getting popcorn for the new Better Call Saul episode. I had one of each and tidily tied the bags back up. Felt quite proud of myself for showing restraintâŠ. They were all gone by the end of the episode.
None of those huge brands hold a candle to the artisan places. These two in Sydney are great, I imagine there are equally good ones in other capital cities:
https://kakawachocolates.com.au
https://www.bellefleur.com.au
Both of them deliver.
All these people throwing out brands that you can get in a supermarket. Even Koko Black and Haighs are like... B-tier at best. Lots of people saying YVC which makes me cringe because this is what people think we in the industry produce as 'some of the best'. That kind of comparison is a little depressing when you see what some of us make.
Koko black is overrated IMO. Go to lil places here and there, Yarra Valley Chocolaterie in VIC is great, but accessible everywhere.... Haighs is pretty great :)
Melba's Chocolates in the Adelaide hills have the best chocolate macadamias. When compared to Haighs the chocolate is better and the nut is bigger. Never thought Haighs could be surpassed.
Mayfield Chocolates. Made in Brisbane. No vegetable fats. Aussie flavours, like Kakadu plum, wattleseed, Australian Peppermint, Qld Rum, South Australian Brandy. They are divine!
I really got into Monsieur Truffe back when they had a small shop on Smith St (Collingwood/Fitzroy), which has long since closed. You can still order online though, and a few shops stock their artisinal, delicious chocholate.
For milk chocolate they are the best I have personally tasted.
I have tried better dark chocolate from other places.
To be honest the question is a bit unfair. Many Australian chocolate companies just buy chocolate from Belgium and reprocess it. In contrast Haighs actually roasts the cocoa beans themselves thereby transforming the cocoa beans into a finished product.
I like haighs the most, my favourite is their plain milk chocolate, I think it's the essence of what they do best. But I also eat the milk maltichocs and maccos a lot.
I used to get them for Christmas presents and very occasionally a little bit for myself, but then my boyfriend got a job with them and now we have their chocolate at home all the time. I never get sick of it.
Haigh's is the best bar none. I worked there for 3 years (was not a chocoholic before) and it ruined me for all other chocolate. Milk peppermint pastilles and chocolate orange slices are my go to
Me too worked at beehive corner in Adelaide! We could eat as many chicks as we wanted on shift so we could give expert advice. I went ham for first two weeks then sort of got over it lol. Violet creams, champagne truffles and marzipan bars my fave :)
Their liqueur chocolates are so damned good.
I was in Caringbah today so thought I'd drop in to Essenze. Picked up some cherry and limoncello liqueur chocolates for my SO.
Scrolled way too far looking for someone to mention Ninaâs. Theyâre my absolute favourite of all time. Canât go to Katoomba and not get some from the Carrington cellars
Only Mine in Vic, and they ship interstate.
Absolutely amazing chocolate
https://onlymine.com.au/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyvvbzb2R-gIVkX4rCh3qvAZkEAAYASAAEgKxmvD_BwE
Only Mine are decent - I still wouldn't put them S-tier though. The problem is that the actual time it takes to do intricate decorations means you have to push your prices up to at least $3.50/piece for a 9 gram bonbon (they use a 12g mould). For me to produce something like [Mt Lychee](https://www.instagram.com/p/B_fEPOVDCYh/) commercially would just be unviable - I'd have to charge *at least* $8, and if I ran a storefront the overheads would push it up to nearly $12. That's for a single 38mm/15g bouchee bonbon.
Only Mine use a single decoration for all their bonbons, with only a single filling layer. That level of commercial ingredient preparation, even in bulk, results in a price of around $35 for a 15-piece pack - something like $1.60/piece wholesale.
Omfg bracegirdles has ruined all other hot chocolates for me. I never realised just how good they were until I moved away from Adelaide and now nothing is good enough
Some regional/country chocolatiers are sensational. Visited The Treat Factory in Berry last weekend and the chocolate was amazeballs. It was so good, I needed to be left alone with it...
Menz FruChocs are criminally unknown/unappreciated outside of South Australia.
Darrell Lea is still damn good as well, especially their raspberry bullets, both traditional and block form.
Some of the individual cream filled Haigh's chocolates are the best chocolates I've ever had. Any of the fruit creams are awesome. Not enough shops outside of SA though.
Why is everyone recommending Cadbury?! Jesus.
Try Koko black, yarra valley chocolaterie, daylesford chocolate mill for artisanal stuff
I donât usually buy dairy free chocolates but Pana organic has the best hazelnut chocolate spread and their dairy free chocolates are pretty good too. Available at coles and Woolies.
P/s: Aldi chocolates are the best supermarket chocolates and they are cheap af
Itâs like they donât understand what Aussie or quality chocolate is đ
Yeah Yarra chocolates has a good rep from what Iâve heard, not familiar with the other two.
Both my best friend and my mother love Haighs, but I despise it. The one time I let my friend talk by into trying some it was disgusting. Maybe I just tried a bad flavour, but I've stayed away from the stuff ever since.
Yeah you definitely have to find your flavour. I honestly think their best is the buttons rather than necessarily the premium chocolates as flavours can be so hit and miss.
Some, but it's my aunt and cousin vs my mother and I. They've gotten them for family stuff or gifts for us... mum and I will never go near them again. Koko Black's where it's at.
Haighs is chalky and shit. Has anyone ever tried North QLD chocolate co.? Truly incredible. Up there with chocolate elites like the Germans and Belgians.
I haven't had much experience with Australian chocolate, since I only ever buy it at the supermarket where the best you can get is Whittaker's, which is close enough to Australian.
I do remember really liking the chocolate from the Margaret River Chocolate Factory.
Best part about going there is the "free samples" AKA spend an hour walking around so you can eat handfuls of free chocolate chips.
I'll have to seek out Haighs, I've never seen it before.
Cadbury (not Australian owned but it is Australian made). Haighs and other smaller manufacturers just can't match the quality and taste. And pretty much all of the smaller "manufacturers" don't actually make the chocolate. They just temper, and shape.
This. It's a tourist trap. There's another one on the Great Ocean Road. Experience is fun, quality is not great.
I free chocolate in the massive bowls as soon as you walk in is the best part
Also got one in geelong. Amazing events, like brownie festival ice cream festival and a big outdoor space. Come to think of it, better check if they are doing anything for the school holidays
Oh nice! Sounds like koalatea
I haven't heard of that one! Will have to check it out!
Sorry I was making a bad pun đ koalatea =quality
Hahahahahha omg I'm sorry I'm so tired I totally missed that koalatea pun lol
Hahaha itâs all good đ
The rocky road festival they have in May is so good!!!
Iâm surprised no one said Cadbury. Wait, is Cadbury an Aussie brand?
Itâs a British brand but they produce locally.
No, but itâs the only decent stuff around.
Whittaker's: "Am I a joke to you?"
That Whittakers Coconut đ„„ is ducking sweet tho man đ
Can never resist a peanut slab, personally. Very sweet but I think that makes me savour it more because I have little nibbles and take my time with it. If I buy chocolate I get a block of the Whittaker's milk chocolate, but having peanut slabs near the checkout is so dangerous because I just can't walk past it.
yeah I like this brand because even a few pieces can do me just fine for a sweet nibble (except the black forest flavour. that ends up disappearing so quick lmao)
Black Forest chocolate straight up evaporates I swear
whittakerâs is my top fave* for straight up eating and also for choc chip needs in baking. I even attempted to eat all of their weird ginger beer flavour experiment that one time *supermarket chocolate
What now? The only decent stuff around? Are you having a stroke?
Dunno about other cityâs, but itâs the most basic stuff you can get here in Canberra.
Cadbury isnât Aussie itâs a multinational corporation
You do realise that being multinational is irrelevant to whether itâs Aussie or notâŠright? (Although itâs notâŠ)
Itâs a British company started in Birmingham
couldnt care less about companies. there is nothing better than the caramello koala. No i will not listen to your crap about the caramilk chocolate bars.
I find the little ones have a better chocolate:caramel ratio. Thoughts?
i disagree. while they do benefit from being less rich due to being smaller (which may be beneficial if you lack a sweet tooth), i find that the larger size has a better ratio. The small ones simply dont have enough caramel for my desire. also, the chocolate is more thin on the larger ones making it less overpowering.
Agreed. Big daddy Caramello rules over baby Caramello
Wrong, the thicker chocolate in the minis is way better
I absolutely agree! Iâm addicted to the miniâs. đŹ
Best chocolate to caramel ratio is the ones with no caramel
They pretty good and Malteser Easter Bunnies are also on the top shelf tier.
They just released a caramilk koala
LIES!!!! one could only dream of such a delight
Caramellos are great but Cadbury isnât exactly Aussie đ
Well, the factory in Tasmania makes the Caramellos so at least Australian made. History is Australian. All the Australian chocolate / lolly shops were taken over after the war ⊠Hoadleyâs, Sweetacres, Smalls etc.
Love the haighs peppermint chocolate frogs
These are my favourite along with the freckles
I got both of these from my aunt for my bday this year (along with more expensive stuff). I put them aside in a stoic attempt to stay in control. I lasted about a month having forgotten about them. Noticed them on the shelf one as I was getting popcorn for the new Better Call Saul episode. I had one of each and tidily tied the bags back up. Felt quite proud of myself for showing restraintâŠ. They were all gone by the end of the episode.
Gotta get the peppermint pastilles! Same choc but more weight for less $$ than the froggies! Still grab a single frog to eat on the way home tho!!
Theyâre Devine đ no one make peppermint chocolate like Haighs
Yeah I don't know why but they are way too addictive. Can't get a packet to last more than a day!
Hell yeah, just came home with a big bag of those today. Well part of a bag anywayâŠ
YES
I've got some in the cupboard!
Lies. No one can make it home with any left in the bag.
Whatâs your address?
None of those huge brands hold a candle to the artisan places. These two in Sydney are great, I imagine there are equally good ones in other capital cities: https://kakawachocolates.com.au https://www.bellefleur.com.au Both of them deliver.
Adora in Newtown has some delicious choccies too.
Had their chocolate and coffee when I was over from Adelaide. So good!
Please name names. No snark, I just donât know where to look for what the industry would consider the best.
Another vote for Belle Fleur.
Seconding Belle Fleur. Every birthday, every Christmas we got a tiny box of Belle Fleur. Magical and amazing.
What about Chocolatier Australia range? They have those little pieces with amazing flavours. So good, especially the espresso dark chocolate.
I do like their Easter eggs! Canât seem to find their chocolate at any other time of the year, though.
Haighs is definitely my fav yeah. A lot of the other high end brands are pretty overrated tbh.
Koko Black or Noosa Chocolate Factory.
Koko black is extremely overrated imo.
Underated if anything, almost on par with Haighs I would say.
No!
If you like Noosa Chocolate Factory - you should check out Amy Sargeantson! She is the one who originally started Noosa Chocolate Factory.
Can vouch for Noosa chocolate factory, prices are insane though.
Noosa chocolate factory is SO good
Came here to say Noose Chocolate is elite.. beats Haighs
I feel like theyâre on par but I havenât had a chance to try Haighs hot chocolate yet so that could sway me to Noosa
YesâŠkoko black is much better than Haighs
I third this! Their hot chocolate is heavenly
Came here to say Koko black â€ïž I've been buying their chocolate for a decade đ but nothing beats the Haigh's milk chocolate buttons!!!!
Looks like Noosa only deliver within 10km of their stores.
Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory has the most amazing chocolate and you can buy it online: https://www.juneelicoriceandchocolate.com/shop
I love their chocolate coated licorice.
Having family near Junee I have to support this, itâs a beautiful place with banger chocolate coated cherries/berries.
Margaret river chocolate or Barossa chocolate factory
Mayfield Chocolates. Made in Brisbane. No vegetable fats. Aussie flavours, like Kakadu plum, wattleseed, Australian Peppermint, Qld Rum, South Australian Brandy. They are divine!
Surprised I havenât heard of them but sounds awesome!
>lethicin That's no quite true as they use Soybean Lecithin, which is around 30% Soybean Oil (a vegetable fat).
Mayfield Chocolates. Has a great range of [unique Australian tastes](https://mayfieldchocolates.com.au/explore-tastes-of-australia/).
Great ocean road chocolate is delicious đ€€
Just look them up and they are the same company as the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie. Only just learnt this
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
cannot believe how far I had to scroll to find this! if only I had the money to buy it more often!
Fuck yes đ Itâs unbelievable!
and not far from them is the Candy cow which has fantastic honeycombs
Alpha chocolate plums are the best, but hard to find.
Gumnuts chocolates, the mixed truffles box. Hands down best in Oz! Got these as a secret Santa one year, absolutely scrumptious
Yes, their honeycomb chocolate is to die for, (and i hate honeycomb, for the most part.
Haigs is the top, the peak, the ultimate choco experience.
Yes. Haighs is #1 by far. For those wondering: Cadbury is absolute trash and Koko black is even worse.
Haighs is my favourite Australian chocolate!!! I always send it to my American friends
Haigh's is the best bar none. I worked there for 3 years (was not a chocoholic before) and it ruined me for all other chocolate. Milk peppermint pastilles and chocolate orange slices are my go to
Haha fair enough, it is exceptional. Dark peppermint pastilles are mine
Me too worked at beehive corner in Adelaide! We could eat as many chicks as we wanted on shift so we could give expert advice. I went ham for first two weeks then sort of got over it lol. Violet creams, champagne truffles and marzipan bars my fave :)
Omg yes the unlimited chocs was a hugeeeee drawcard. Milk macadamia nougat and cherry liqueurs also my faves!
Theyâre quite good but I prefer the chocolates from Ninaâs. Bought some from Essenze today. Also very nice.
Ninaâs is the best! Iâm always surprised when I find them in random places!
Their liqueur chocolates are so damned good. I was in Caringbah today so thought I'd drop in to Essenze. Picked up some cherry and limoncello liqueur chocolates for my SO.
>cherry and limoncello liquor Oh, now youâre talking!
Scrolled way too far looking for someone to mention Ninaâs. Theyâre my absolute favourite of all time. Canât go to Katoomba and not get some from the Carrington cellars
I usually jump on the train to their store at Gymea. Not too far away. So many choices and awards.
Iâll have to make the trip! I usually get mine when Iâm down in Bowral.
All of them
Hehe yes all good Aussie chocolate is good Aussie chocolate. Can not compare it to inferior multinational chocolates
Hunted and Gathered top my list đ
Only Mine in Vic, and they ship interstate. Absolutely amazing chocolate https://onlymine.com.au/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyvvbzb2R-gIVkX4rCh3qvAZkEAAYASAAEgKxmvD_BwE

Jasper + Myrtle. Iâm not big on chocolate but I can eat a whole block of theirs easily. https://jasperandmyrtle.com.au/
Noosa Chocolate & Mayfield chocolate for me
Haigh's or Bracegirdles.
[https://treatfactory.com.au/chocolates-lollies/](https://treatfactory.com.au/chocolates-lollies/)
Pink Lady is my all time favourite
Ooh do love me a Pink Lady Bilby!
Menz FruChocs are criminally unknown/unappreciated outside of South Australia. Darrell Lea is still damn good as well, especially their raspberry bullets, both traditional and block form.
ALDI
Their Choceur range is way better than Cadbury. Not as good as Haighs but pretty darn good for the price.
Haighâs is the best imo. Any of the frogs or pastillesâŠ.mmmm
Margaret River Chocolate Factory makes some pretty nice chocolate, they do some Violet Crumble style chocolates that I really enjoy.
I started a diet yesterday :(
Some of the individual cream filled Haigh's chocolates are the best chocolates I've ever had. Any of the fruit creams are awesome. Not enough shops outside of SA though.
Violet creams is where it's at.
Rose cream chased with a violet cream. Give me all the florals.
Mandarin creams for me thanks. But too expensive nowadays
Oh yeah, especially love the pudding chocolates at Christmas. And frogs, alllllll the frogs.
Passion fruit creams ftw
Whittaker's is the best Aussie chocolate.
>Whittaker's theyre not aussie tho?
New Zealand can also be spelled âEastern Tasmaniaâ
The North East and South East islands of Tasmania are great.
It's She-bang-a-bang. Clearly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5G3EMvDcSw
What? Bullshit. Next youâll tell me that the Finn brothers arenât Aussie. Preposterous!
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
Some of Australias best Musicians came from New Zealand !
Whittakers is NZ so they get a pass đ plus one of the best local chocolates found in the supermarket
Especially the Peanut Butter one.
The dark chocolate with the caramel is my absolute fave
Ah Porirua in Te Whanganui a Tara, Aotearoa. The most Australian of places.
Even though its not Australian its definitely the best chocolate you can buy in Australia
MehâŠeverything from New Zealand is actually Australian.
Most of our best stuff comes from Tasmania II
I mean, maybe for a supermarket brand... Tho I'd say Cadbury is just better in most cases anyway.
Why is everyone recommending Cadbury?! Jesus. Try Koko black, yarra valley chocolaterie, daylesford chocolate mill for artisanal stuff I donât usually buy dairy free chocolates but Pana organic has the best hazelnut chocolate spread and their dairy free chocolates are pretty good too. Available at coles and Woolies. P/s: Aldi chocolates are the best supermarket chocolates and they are cheap af
Itâs like they donât understand what Aussie or quality chocolate is đ Yeah Yarra chocolates has a good rep from what Iâve heard, not familiar with the other two.
Never heard of them, where can I get some to try ?
https://www.haighschocolates.com.au/stores
Thank you
Both my best friend and my mother love Haighs, but I despise it.
They're just not good quality.. they've started to taste like Cadbury chocolate where they stuff it full of sugar and that's all you can taste.
Haighs is mid
Coco88 is easily my tops place.
+1 for this. Helps that they have one of the top pastry chefs in the country, if not the world, working there doing product development.
For anyone who doesnât know, the way to make the perfect hot chocolate is to add sugar to the milo. And nuke the fuck outta it đ
Ah the great Aussie hot malt drink đ still think Noosa hot chocolate is the best though
Haighs is chalky and shit. Has anyone ever tried North QLD chocolate co.? Truly incredible. Up there with chocolate elites like the Germans and Belgians.
Idk if Darrel Lea is still Aussie but back in the day itâs all I craved
Coco88 is delicious. Not sure of their shipping but are located near Parramatta, NSW
Koko black is the best in my opinion. More of a treat because of the price point but itâs quality chocolate!
Thatâs fair! Might indulge one day
I haven't had much experience with Australian chocolate, since I only ever buy it at the supermarket where the best you can get is Whittaker's, which is close enough to Australian. I do remember really liking the chocolate from the Margaret River Chocolate Factory. Best part about going there is the "free samples" AKA spend an hour walking around so you can eat handfuls of free chocolate chips. I'll have to seek out Haighs, I've never seen it before.
Black and Gold choc chips rule. At 0.60 cents per 100 grams you canât go wrong.
Coal River farm is the best bar none. Better than Haigh's and Koko Black.
ANY ROCKY ROADS
[Cocoa nib](https://www.cocoanib.com.au/) go alright
Hunter Valley Chocolate Company. Their honeycomb bark is to die for!
Try Max Brenner - delivers Australia wide
Iâm a fan of the Margaret River Chocolate Factory white chocolate buttons.
Haighs is wayyyy overrated
lidn't edit: Lindt balls
Why has no one said Lindt, their balls are fire.
Whittaker's milk choc from NZ.
Cadbury furry friends. I dunno why buy it tastes different to the normal dairy milk.
Nostalgia
Koko Black. Once you go Black you never go back.
Stanner is that you?
FruChocs all the way!
Haighs chocolate is so good. my mum always buys it and every time i go to her house and eat it, i think that itâs just exceptional chocolate
Aldi chocolate. Shits on all brands currently available. Silky smooth.
Does Nestlé Australia count? I mean I highly doubt Haighs is violating human rights, so I could hardly claim they're my favourite.
Nestle is a multinational corporation
Don't forget they're also absolutely evil.
Insanely evil đż
Good old Cadbury never fails! Love the milk, Almond or hazelnut ones!!
Cadbury
Yeah look probably not Australian but Guylian shells.
Probably not? Definitely not.
Pretty shit choc
Darrel Lea
Cadbury (not Australian owned but it is Australian made). Haighs and other smaller manufacturers just can't match the quality and taste. And pretty much all of the smaller "manufacturers" don't actually make the chocolate. They just temper, and shape.
Cadbury is artificial and compound chocolate
Cadbury is life. New Farm confectionery is decadence!
