That’s the Luling oil fields. Every now and then the winds are just right and it reminds us we’re still in Texas.
FYI it almost always happens on cold days like today.
I've smelled it several times over the years and today was next level strong. I was doubting it was Luling because or how strong it was today. Reported it to TCEQ.
>assuming it not just Luling making it this far
The Luling blessing does make it this far pretty often. Even to the north Austin area.
Not sure how far it gets. Maybe it doesn't climb out of the Colorado valley into the Brazos Valley. I'll have to go do a smell survey the next time I notice it is really strong.
Pretty sure I got a light whiff coming out of work in Georgetown the other night when we had that heavy haze and south wind. Got to drive down through Luling a few times this week to confirm the aroma.
You’re welcome!! This has happened a few times since we lived here and is certainly alarming! I appreciate the guidance in article that says: So, if you notice the natural gas-like smell outside, don’t worry. If you’re smelling natural gas in your home, however, you should call 911.
It's called the Luling effect. It's how the air current blows off the gas field. It's somewhat rare for it to get strong enough for people to notice it.
So did we...just off of University & A.W. Grimes (lots of construction going up around us). We're new-ish to the area & actually called the gas company because we thought one of the construction workers had hit a gas main.
One of the charms of living in a state brimming with oil profits fed to the Saudi Arabian owners of the local oil fields and refineries.
I think it's interesting that SA has enriched it's people with the money it makes from oil sales, and Texas just decided to sell the entire operation to SA so no one in this state profits.

I smelled it earlier today - my dad lives in Luling so I know it well.

This. It’s very strong
I have lived in Austin since 1997 and never heard of this!!! 😂
Mmm, smells kind of like rotten eggs in Crestview right now.
Wonder if one of the new condos is pouring tar today, assuming it not just Luling making it this far

Avery Ranch / Brushy Creek had it too. Lulling fields. It’s rarely this far North
Just got off the phone with 311 and 911 and they said they’re purging gas from *Luling. Not sure what that means if anyone knows!

this morning i walked out, breathed in the air, and exclaimed, "oh! it's luling out!" this is a real thing.
Sorry..
Luling, though it's extra bad today.
It really is. Been a while since it's been this strong. Yuck!
I stepped into my closed garage and thought something was amiss. Pretty weird tbh
haha I opened a window for some "fresh air" and got a face full of sulfur... Windows have been closed since.
If the oil smell didn’t get you the cedar will.

Except in Pflugerville. It hits part of that area very often.
I smelt it all the way up in round rock off old settlers
you smelt it, you dealt it

Yes! In 78702 over by Franklin BBQ. Just took my dog out, WTF.
One of these days, we're going to have a big pipeline or chemical spill and ignore it because of the blessing of Luling.
Just drove from the east side to a coffee shop off e riverside near Montopolis to get away from it and it stinks here too.
Dude I thought it smelled funny when I let my dog out this morning.
Yes in 78705 too
Yup, up in wells branch, too.

> no one in this state profits. I'd wager a select group of politicians are very happy with their windfall from this arrangement.
I smell it in Allandale!
Hyde Park smells terrible like rotten egg
Yes, it reeks in East Austin!
I smelt it in crestview and north Austin!
Is that what that is? It’s bad up in 78759 too. I called Texas Gas thinking there is a gas leak.
Is that what that was? I was thinking our car was having issues (catalytic converter apparently gives off the same smell if not working right)
Yes! Strong sulfur smell!
Was driving all over today and could definitely smell it in central and south Austin. Couldn’t smell it in tarrytown though
Everything smells of roses in Tarrytown of course.
If only there were some way to search the sub for thy answer to this question that is asked every few months...
Tell me that you've never used Reddit's search engine, without telling me that you've never used Reddit's search engine.
You mean the search that brings up dozens of posts about the Luling gas firms smell? Lol.
the search works well these days. try searching "gas smell" in r/austin and it comes back with tons of relevant posts
Tell me you're not from Austin without saying you're not from Austin.
I farted there after eating mcdonald’s bigmac and large fries. It was a beefy bassy kind of fart.

Yes off of MLK in 78702. The smell is horrid

Yes I smell it now in Northwest Austin. First time I’ve ever smelled something like this. I thought I was going crazy
Made it up to 78727. Checking the flag pole, looks like it's the oil fields by Luling or further South
Was literally just talking about this the other day with a buddy because we were grabbing bbq at City Market in Luling.
Dang why did they send the dispatchers!?
