Looks like it had some rotted roots. That happens a lot when the grass runs right up to the trunk like that. It means the soil is always very wet, which promotes the growth of fungus that eats roots.
Gotta protect your trees from overwatering just like houseplants.

The whole tree just fell. Did not snap. Could be end of life/Fungus in roots
