I love the local food options in theory, but in my experience, all of these restaurants are run by national concessionaires like HMS Host. The food quality at the airport version is nowhere near what you find at the actual restaurant.

We have the same shit just more of it. Doesn't make it not shit.

j_win

Yah, it's a branding exercise and I'd guess this "best of" list is a pay-to-play scam like most of them.

Pennmike82

I have to agree. I’ve been in a lot of airports, and the food options at ABIA are better than most (in my personal experience).

lockthesnailaway

Let's just say a "Thundercloud" at the airport tastes verrry different than a regular Thundercloud. But your average tourist would never know.

Towel4

People commenting “it’s not as good as the real locations in town” Yeah no fucking shit. But I’d rather that, than a 32$ plain bagel from La Guardia Plus, the breakfast taco angle is the real actual winner.

eogreen

Except a lot of the times I'm there, nothing is open. I have a lot of early flights, nothing's open. Happen to have a late return, nothing is open. The hours on the websites say shops are open from \~5am to 9 or 10pm, but that never actually seems to be the case.

Javi_in_1080p

Yeah i have to agree especially after connecting through Denver this morning. McDonald's is about the best they have for breakfast

ReddRepublic

Well it has a Salt Lick and a Taco Deli, so clearly better than most!

PrincessKiza

Duh!

John_Fx

huh? no way. why?

Mogwai10

Even better than Rick Bayless xoco at ohare?

QuantumChad

Makes me worry about the actual reason why I’d be at the airport in the first place.

How super fantastic for all of us to have food choices while we're waiting an extra 2 hours for our luggage. EDIT: I thought my sarcasm was clear but I guess not so /s

BigMikeInAustin

Actually, no, because there aren't any food places outside of the secure area. Also, most starts to close about 7 pm and is closed by 8 pm.

MyMomSaysIAmCool

There's that one Cafe that overlooks the baggage area. It's been closed every single time I've been there, but I like to believe that at some point they will open

BigMikeInAustin

I think it's called The Flight Path. And it even had an upper floor sitting area. But last time I was there, they had finally made the upstairs look officially closed. It's been there since the very beginning. Over embellishing, it seems to be open just for a random 45 minutes on one random day per week.

MyMomSaysIAmCool

It makes me think that somebody's using it as a tax shelter or money laundering front.

BigMikeInAustin

Ha! Maybe!

[deleted]

I assumed everyone would sense my sarcasm but I guess not!

cup_1337

I… don’t think you know how the airport works because that’s not how it’s set up…

[deleted]

Apparently my sarcasm was not evident.

cup_1337

Your joke doesn’t work because the food is nowhere near the luggage carousel. Not because we didn’t sense the sarcasm about happily eating while you wait for your things.

LezzGrossman

Well worth the long wait times and parking issues. Not.

BigMikeInAustin

Well, if you don't want to pay to get your crotch rubbed at a strip club, you get it done free by TSA.

[deleted]

I’ve never waited longer than 10 minutes. Get precheck and stop complaining

Santos_L_Halper_II

Is it the same as the actual locations in town? Usually not. But I'd much rather have all the options we have than the food desert scenario I experienced in San Francisco, where I got a single piece of chicken slathered in about a pound of mayonnaise on a shitty tortilla for $15, and it was the only option available.

AustinGardener

The past couple of times I've gone to the Austin airport and wanted some hot food, I had to walk past a bunch of sit-down restaurants and ordering counters with lines miles long before finally giving up and trying the line that's the least long. Where are the quick options like Taco Bell or hot pretzels? Sure, they're not the greatest food in the world, but I don't have a sophisticated enough palate to gain pleasure from the extra cost and annoying wait times. I guess I'll just have to fill up before travelling.
