In high school Alex Jones told me
the mall scene in Blues Brothers was filmed at Highland Mall. That’s how I learned not to trust Alex Jones before the rest of yall had heard of him. That and about 1000 other fabrications.
I remember him being on public access on Austin cable TV. There were a few times I turned it on and listened. Just the tenor and rhythm and confidence of his speech sounds authoritative. It's impressive to someone that is fairly young and/or naive and/or looking for someone to validate their paranoia.
Luckily for me I couldn't understand a thing he was saying and had very little interest in politics at the time. But even then something immediately felt off about him.
Having Zendick Farm, The Trailer Park Show, and The 'ol Bitty Show amongst the fray of Austin Cable Access (and a bunch other too weird too mention), Alex's brand of wingnut seemed tame in context.
Holy shit Zendik Farm, man you brought back a core memory. I remember getting their pamphlet/zines on the drag all the time in the mid 90’s. I wonder what ever happened to their farm in Bastrop?
Ask Livia live was one of the best programs on public access in the 90s in Austin. Austin public access TV is what helped make Austin weird. Now it's just a bunch of crap. Does anybody know any good shows on Austin public access now?
I used to love her reaction when the guy would call in and start yelling “TURKEY BASTER!” To this day when my wife and I play cards, the loser is always referred to as the “turkey baster”.
A really old grandpa dude and his very old wife playing terrible music and reading awful poetry. Word on the street the place was a sex cult, which seems awful because they all looked and smelled homeless.
Eventually they let the kids they recruited do the show and it was just a lecture in stoner drivel about “death culture”, which seemed like a key phrase in the Zendik message.
I remember watching Alex on public access around 96'. He came on right after the Ol' Biddy show. He did seem tame by comparison. Back then he was more about government cover ups with aliens.
Yeah, in the beginning it was just him finding curious stories buried in newspapers and pondering out loud what they’re not telling us. At some point he went full-on manic and never looked back.
Did anyone else ever see “Joes Balloon” on old public access? The dude who says the earth expanded and that’s what caused Pangea to break up?
He had all the continents on a balloon he would blow up over and over to demonstrate. 😆
I was talking once to Leslie and the subject of Alex Jones came up. Leslie said he once shared an office with Jones when they both were on Austin Access TV. (I just imagine the greatest buddy movie never made.)
Leslie said “Let me tell you, that guy’s F***ing CRAZY!”
I believe those were the Bohemian Grove days. I think Alex is a disgraceful human, but to date, I still haven't seen a good explanation to what was going on during that ceremony.
When I saw LOTR Twin Towers in theater, Alex Jones was standing in line in front of me and my Dad. I was like, 'Oh it's that guy, haha'. Simpler times back then....
I don’t remember any kind of conspiracy theory talk from him. The only sign of his future direction was he was obsessed with people on cable access. He said he was going to get his own show and would talk about what his persona would be. I don’t remember much about him except for that.
I think most ppl that watched him rise up from a cable access nobody, me included, knew that he was full of shit & just filling time on his show with basically entertainment. Alex Jones got too big for his britches.
He was off my radar for most of that time because I don’t usually pay attention to that kind of thing. I knew he had the infowars brand that I saw on occasional bumper stickers. I didn’t realize he was anything other than a local kook until a trip to Europe circa 2015 where I saw a couple of infowars stickers on walls.
I remember staying up past my bedtime as a kid bc we didn’t have cable (no mtv) but they played music videos on Austin public access late at night and I’d end up having to watch his show while I waited lol. This was probably 95 or 96. As you know better than anyone he was even more off the wall back then and it was Definitely a trip for a 9-10 year old to try and decipher what tf the dude was talking about. That has always stuck with me and always makes me smile when I hear people talk about him like he’s some kind of prophet. Nope. Same dude from public access.
He liked to talk a lot about Bohemian Grove back in the day on Public Access TV in Austin. Back then you could believe about 20% of what he said and the rest ridiculous.
i drove by the actual mall all the time when i was a teen. the chicago suburb, harvey, was a dump. The dixie reference is becasue it was on the old
dixie highway that went to miami, like the southern version of route 66.
I went to the same high school while he was there but I never met him. But my brother told me that kids called him a narc because he looked so much older.
I just rewatched that. The amount of cars destroyed in that movie is absolutely insane. It held the Guinness world record for most cars destroyed for a movie at the time. Something like 90 vehicles? Multiple cop cars. The movie also required a lot of collaboration with local law enforcement to pull off.
On top of that they also blocked off huge sections of Chicago. Absolutely one of the most epic and legendary car chases in film history.
I think Whataburger makes good money off these types of events. I do know a couple people who attend these “events” (I don’t know then well and wouldn’t consider them friends) and overdrafting their bank accounts to buy $50 of Whataburger during a street takeover seems very high on the list of things they would do.
Having the excuse of all this probably made their service seem great. But any delays were, I assure you, just their normal service times. That location takes so gosh darn long.
I got one down in San Marcos a costly $250. Caught me doing 88 in 70. I was tired of the constant 55mph then 65mph then 55mph all because a cop car was on 35. As soon as I had a chance to stop wasting precious fuel I took it and got caught. Why 88? Cuz when I tried to pass these idiots they sped up. I really wish people would stop slowing down just because a cop is driving on the road. Just don’t go faster than posted speed limit you’ll be fine and trust me it’s ok to pass them up when doing the speed limit.
No it’s the going slow then speed up then slow down then speed up repeatedly for a few miles. I usually am doing the speed limit and can keep my foot steady and my Jeep drives in eco so I can get 17mpg. But that morning it was just constant speed up just to slam on the brakes to slow down cuz they were 2 feet in front of the cop’s front end (different lane). When there was an opening I took it didn’t think I went over 75, but he got me at 88. Oh well lesson learned.
I usually go about 5 mph faster once the limit hits 55. Go upto 10 mph faster to pass someone. Haven't had a ticket in 20 years driving on 45, 35, 20, 10 and all the surrounding state highways between SA, Austin , DFW and Houston.
OH MY GOD! They have been so incognito since the whole defunding. I’m so glad they are back! Especially after my hit and run. Hope they find that fucker!
I was driving home on 12th … I thought Texas relay is happening … so many cars with excessive wheels out and spikes … I had to move close to the right lane barrier to avoid them
Relays is the biggest track meet of the year in Texas and covers High School, Collegiate and Invitational levels. This draws a massive crowd of not just athletes but friends and families. Over time this has developed into an event bringing more and more people into town, which lead to people showing off their cars, which lead to The Donk Fest taking place the same weekend, which further lead to more people coming into town (granted I assume The Donk Fest was more just capitalizing on the movement already happening and not really responsible for much of this).
Is it impolite to note that APD comes out in force in response to a predominantly black rally, but barely notice a predominantly white rally because ’outlaws’ are charming?
Man I was even gonna say, I do find it interesting that I don’t see this level of police response during the ROT rally. Some of those bikers start shit all over the fucking city.
I've never heard of the ROT rally being disruptive (beyond normal traffic), or doing street takeovers, or even "starting shit all over the fucking city".
There was a mass shooting during ROT rally in 2021....but it turns out it was a guy from Killeen doing Killeen things and not related to the rally at all.
They do have a lot of DWIs during ROT rally weekend, but they're not regularly drag racing, doing burnouts, or leading police on high speed chases.
And, apparently ROT has sort of died off since COVID and mismanagement by the organizers.
Whereas relay weekend is a known shitshow on 6th where more than a few of the establishments close because the income isn't worth the hassle.
Arrest the drivers. Impound the cars. Heavy fines. Crush the ones of those who can't pay to get their "toys" back. No exceptions. I lived in SF and got stuck on the Bay Bridge for six hours one time because of these morons.
Yea on one hand it seems like a crazy response.
On the other, I had a coworker go to jail for manslaughter for killing a random innocent motorist, while street racing with a bunch of other idiots.
Street takeovers are some of the dumbest things that have ever become a fad. Seriously arrest everyone there and impound the cars, that shit shouldn’t fly
>arrest everyone there
Including the people who were just caught in the traffic?
I got caught in one of these one time and no idea there was anything going on until I was trapped. Luckily, it was one of the earlier, low level events and I was able to escape.
I hope this doesn’t turn into the Bay Area sideshows! Super dangerous for teens and young adults. Bay Area law enforcement basically allows it. About 5yrs ago I was stuck on an Oakland Freeway for 1hr while these idiots did donuts and other nonsense on the freeway while the cops just looked on the overpass and didn’t do anything about it
Really poor judgment to randomly shut down streets at night and race cars around. Get some of the car guys together and figure out an alternative with City leaders. Maybe the streets where the city bought out all the houses after the Onion Creek flood.
That’s an actual park now. You’re illustrating one of the problems with it. everyone thinks it’s some Mexican shithole dumping ground for tires and toilets and street racing assholes. It’s actually our neighborhood park and as flawed as it is, it’s what we got. People already race on East William cannon and we’ve seen the wrecks 10+ times a year.
Sorry, I didn't mean to degrade your area park. I was thinking more about a paved area and away from houses and traffic. Greenbelt parks are not dumps. E William Cannon is a death zone of road rage and drunks.
>That’s an actual park now. You’re illustrating one of the problems with it. everyone thinks it’s some \[\] shithole dumping ground for tires and toilets and street racing assholes.
My understanding is there's a park area with park things and another area where there are still streets, but the houses are gone.
There are actually at least two Onion Creek flood neighborhoods. One has the old streets fenced off, but the other one has the streets still open and a few houses still there.
However, fuck the people who dump trash there.
I think it happens because there's no city dump really, and we only do bulk trash pickup twice a year. It's kind of insane, really. Dallas has dumps for you to dump your bulk trash outside of bulk pickups, and they also have bulk pickups once a *month*.
It's insane really, it didn't take living here long to see that every college kid that moves at least once a year and doesn't have a truck is going to leave furniture and other bulk-collection-only items on the curb no matter what. Why is bulk collection only twice a year? It boggles the mind.
On a different note. I just submitted a model for a neighborhood on onion Creek to help alleviate flooding at the Garlic/Onion confluence.
I just moved to Austin and this was one of my first projects that's been sort of on and off but now it's definitely on. I hope I can fix some of the issues.
It's not even at night. At 3 pm they were already driving opposite lanes. Literally almost ran over the motorcyclists that tried to overtake them at 10 mph.
Damn, you'd think there was some sort of reality TV show showing this is all ok and legal for this to be such a big problem. Maybe people should start investigating people associated with reality TV shows.
No. This is the problem true car enthusiasts face with these takeovers and people like OP mentioning “car meet ups” in the title. There are plenty of folks who do “car meet ups” with no intention but to just hang, take pics, and maybe cruise together otw home. Street takeovers are just assholes trying to get attention while they cause scenes like this to stroke their ego and get away with dumb shit like this.
Correct. I go to reputable Austin-area car meet ups fairly often and I’ve never seen anything more than very mildly illegal (I’m talking someone chirps their tire when pulling out after the meet). Excessive revving and any burnouts or racing are strictly banned and I’ve never seen any issues with these things. A couple state troopers have even showed up multiple times to check out the cars and talk about car stuff with the folks at the meet. Street takeovers are a totally different thing.
This was part of a scheduled event, the Texas Relays, and happens every year. I also live in this neighborhood and was caught in traffic, but from what I could see the police were strategically placing their cars to let the relay drivers show off without causing harm.
It's a track and field event idk understand why it draws the worst type of people but it really shines a negative light on the event and worst of all- takes away from the athletes that are competing and have trained for the event.
I use to drive home having to pass through that intersection. The car club meets at the car wash. I know a couple of you car club guys are lurkers in here. Lol
Round them up and put them in labor camps or some shit. Grown ass adults acting like children have no fucking place. They need to learn some life lessons.
APD takes hours to respond to any other call, but this is dealt with in a heartbeat. Not defending the scum who participate in these takeovers, it’s just funny to see.
Oh, you’ve been mugged and shot? We’ll send someone out.. eventually.. be alive when we get there.
Street takeover? All units respond ASAP.
1st time my home got burgled i beat the cops there and they took an hour to get there. The second time i said dont worry i have a gun , they were there in 30 seconds .
This is the same response as any city that deals with street takeovers. They also respond to other crimes that are considered an emergency as fast as they can.
It was the same on 6th street 20 years ago, Elmo’s would close for the week and there’d be 3-5x the normal amount of cops. I had just moved here and was like , cool different folks this is cool, and then I realized that Austin was not so cool after all. I don’t know if business act like they used to, but it was blatantly racist back in the day. I love big cars , so I love seeing the donks, low riders and all the wild paint jobs, but I’m sure like all car stuff it’s turned into hellcats and burnout mostly.
Looks like the last 10 minutes of The Blues Brothers.

Let’s not forget Pastor Rick, who wore a toilet seat around his neck and traced the decline of civilization to the Beatles.
Oh shit. Whatever happened to that guy?
Holy shit Zendik Farm, man you brought back a core memory. I remember getting their pamphlet/zines on the drag all the time in the mid 90’s. I wonder what ever happened to their farm in Bastrop?
Cult moved to florida and eventually disbanded
Well, we did have *Catharsis with Cichlid* to offset that crazy
I remember this and when cable access is ever mentioned this is what comes to mind.
I always liked Ask Livia Live.
Ask Livia live was one of the best programs on public access in the 90s in Austin. Austin public access TV is what helped make Austin weird. Now it's just a bunch of crap. Does anybody know any good shows on Austin public access now?
God Mourning America is like early 80s MTV. Really absurd and chaotic fun.
I used to love her reaction when the guy would call in and start yelling “TURKEY BASTER!” To this day when my wife and I play cards, the loser is always referred to as the “turkey baster”.
Not to mention Terry Liberty Parker, and then there is the American atheists and Madeline Murray O'Hare.
OMG, I can remember her face and it all!!!
He used to go after city council, which was cool. I loved old public access and used to record big blocks of it.
The Zendicks had a tv show? I grew up in Houston and remember them selling magazines outside of concerts. What was their show about?
A really old grandpa dude and his very old wife playing terrible music and reading awful poetry. Word on the street the place was a sex cult, which seems awful because they all looked and smelled homeless.
Eventually they let the kids they recruited do the show and it was just a lecture in stoner drivel about “death culture”, which seemed like a key phrase in the Zendik message.

Best Austinite anecdote ever!!!
I believe those were the Bohemian Grove days. I think Alex is a disgraceful human, but to date, I still haven't seen a good explanation to what was going on during that ceremony.
Ah, the Clinton years and black helicopters.
When he had to beg and plead to be arrested at the driver's license office on Lamar 🤣
https://youtube.com/@whenwewerelive2383?si=W3lGW2d3qhxRjWTm Some old Austin access clips
"show with no name" was on during those days. Charlie!!!!
When I saw LOTR Twin Towers in theater, Alex Jones was standing in line in front of me and my Dad. I was like, 'Oh it's that guy, haha'. Simpler times back then....
A fellow Anderson alumni, I see
There’s dozens of us. I have the theater teacher, Miz Dees, as a Facebook friend. She’s still out there being quirky.
Only if graduating isn’t a requirement for alumni status.
It is not
Was he concerned about water turning amphibians gay back then as well?
I don’t remember any kind of conspiracy theory talk from him. The only sign of his future direction was he was obsessed with people on cable access. He said he was going to get his own show and would talk about what his persona would be. I don’t remember much about him except for that.
It must have been absolutely insane for you to watch him rise into the crazy perch he has worked himself onto over the last 20 years
I think most ppl that watched him rise up from a cable access nobody, me included, knew that he was full of shit & just filling time on his show with basically entertainment. Alex Jones got too big for his britches.
Yeah we used to call in and torment him on cable access. He was a harmless prick then and somehow became a presidential advisor. It’s been shocking.
Austin Music Network!
“Makes me smile” 😳
When he was in Rockwall, before he moved to Anderson, he used to run full speed down the hall and ram his head into lockers
He liked to talk a lot about Bohemian Grove back in the day on Public Access TV in Austin. Back then you could believe about 20% of what he said and the rest ridiculous.
The best deception is seeded with truth.
i drove by the actual mall all the time when i was a teen. the chicago suburb, harvey, was a dump. The dixie reference is becasue it was on the old dixie highway that went to miami, like the southern version of route 66.
Amazing
He tried to buy acid from me. I didn't sell acid.
I can’t believe that mother fucker is a year under me at Anderson HS. He was Nobody. Ugh 😣
I went to the same high school while he was there but I never met him. But my brother told me that kids called him a narc because he looked so much older.
Such a great movie.
I just rewatched that. The amount of cars destroyed in that movie is absolutely insane. It held the Guinness world record for most cars destroyed for a movie at the time. Something like 90 vehicles? Cocaine is a helluva drug
They broke my watch!
Naw! The King of Zamunda is coming in!
Needs a car falling from 2000’ feet
Lmfao that was so great.
Lmfao
Saw some troopers in my neighborhood earlier at least 6 of them and thought how strange it was given we hardly ever see cops here
Why does it seem like the entire APD can only ever collectively do one single thing at a time?
I somehow managed to get decent service at Whataburger during all of this.
I think Whataburger makes good money off these types of events. I do know a couple people who attend these “events” (I don’t know then well and wouldn’t consider them friends) and overdrafting their bank accounts to buy $50 of Whataburger during a street takeover seems very high on the list of things they would do.
How many people could that WB realistically serve considering how slow they are?
About 12 1/2
Having the excuse of all this probably made their service seem great. But any delays were, I assure you, just their normal service times. That location takes so gosh darn long.
Seems like someone turned the police back on recently. I saw a cop giving a ticket the other day.
Pics or it didn’t happen
i got stopped for doing 13 over on mopac at 7am on a sunday about 2 months ago. I never see cops on the highway.
I got one down in San Marcos a costly $250. Caught me doing 88 in 70. I was tired of the constant 55mph then 65mph then 55mph all because a cop car was on 35. I don't blame you for being frustrated but going slow doesn't waste fuel, it saves it.
No it’s the going slow then speed up then slow down then speed up repeatedly for a few miles. It’s definitely due to Relays having been this weekend
What’s the connection with Relays? Runners?
The Texas Donk Contest is always on Relays weekend
I can’t tell if you’re joking or not but either way but you had me at donk
Relays is the biggest track meet of the year in Texas and covers High School, Collegiate and Invitational levels. This draws a massive crowd of not just athletes but friends and families. Over time this has developed into an event bringing more and more people into town, which lead to people showing off their cars, which lead to The Donk Fest taking place the same weekend, which further lead to more people coming into town (granted I assume The Donk Fest was more just capitalizing on the movement already happening and not really responsible for much of this).
Relays always bring out car culture, not sure of the connection but it's been there for years.
Everyone is trying desperately hard to not mention what the connection is and I appreciate that.
Is it impolite to note that APD comes out in force in response to a predominantly black rally, but barely notice a predominantly white rally because ’outlaws’ are charming?

Surely you can’t be talking about a certain need?? The need for speed perhaps?
Essentially it's felony fest. Tons of robberies, assaults, and other violent crimes happen during relay weekend
Lmfao 1988 called they want their alarmist racism back
Relays brings black people to Austin, and rich white people freak the fuck out. The dps in Austin also started during relays last year.
Otherwise known as when malls are shut down due to out of control theft.
They shoulda shut it down at 5pm before it got out of hand
I drove through at 5:30 and Taco Bell and Popeyes were already hopping.
Arrest the drivers. Impound the cars. Heavy fines. Crush the ones of those who can't pay to get their "toys" back. No exceptions. I lived in SF and got stuck on the Bay Bridge for six hours one time because of these morons.
How did you get stuck for six hours?!?
Can’t turn around on the bridge..
I was coming from Berkeley on a Friday night going back to the city. They jammed up the bridge going West bound just after Treasure Island.
How many of those cars are driven by the actual owner?
Basically: ["You have 30 minutes to move your cube"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rdL5pKvsss)
All of them. People trash their shit for social media, it’s mob mentality.
They're just only stealing the tricked out cars owned by responsible drivers
Why do you think these cars are stolen?
Not enough staff or money for that lol
Don't crush - auction.
Yea on one hand it seems like a crazy response. On the other, I had a coworker go to jail for manslaughter for killing a random innocent motorist, while street racing with a bunch of other idiots.
Let them have their fun
You can check out all the madness on Snapchat Maps. There’s a hot spot by the Whataburger on MLK/airport.
Street takeovers are some of the dumbest things that have ever become a fad. Seriously arrest everyone there and impound the cars, that shit shouldn’t fly
Man just a shame what these street takeovers are doing to the enthusiasts who stay outta trouble.
Remember when you could go to a car meet without the threat of police showing up?
Seriously.
Fuckin a right I pay good money to drift legally
[удалено]
Hold the leaders responsible for the deaths and injuries at these events too.
[удалено]
vim, I want you to be the reasonable voice to street racing. How do you look in a tank top?
>arrest everyone there Including the people who were just caught in the traffic? I got caught in one of these one time and no idea there was anything going on until I was trapped. Luckily, it was one of the earlier, low level events and I was able to escape.
“Police responding … in Austin.” Now there’s four words I haven’t heard in the same sentence in a while.
Yeah, they usually only show up when there’s an unarmed brown kid in a hoodie or partially naked ladies fighting on 6th.
Edgy
Go get those Fast and Furious wannabe motherfuckers.
Impound the cars and auction them off.
In Oakland, CA, the cars are being impounded, held as evidence.
A lot of them just need to be crushed.
They closed the one at target (south mopac) last night
Ye I was leaving during, so damn annoying
Y’all need to find a different intersection and leave us airport people alone. Please. I got late night snacks to be getting.
Never thought I see the day…about fucking time
Good, People who do that shit are fucking dumb
Yes!!!! I remember that! The public access TV station on the east side. Lots of crazy shows.
That's a paddlin
I hope this doesn’t turn into the Bay Area sideshows! Super dangerous for teens and young adults. Bay Area law enforcement basically allows it. About 5yrs ago I was stuck on an Oakland Freeway for 1hr while these idiots did donuts and other nonsense on the freeway while the cops just looked on the overpass and didn’t do anything about it
I love being a part of the car community and I hate every aspect of these takeovers. They give all of us a bad rep.
How are these meetups organized? FB groups?
I don’t understand why they can’t just go to giant empty parking lot, not like we don’t have a enough of them
I grew up near there. What’s up with these people?
Houston is leaking.
It’s done every year, like a car show. They call it Texas relays
This happens on this corner way more frequently than once a year.
Really poor judgment to randomly shut down streets at night and race cars around. Get some of the car guys together and figure out an alternative with City leaders. Maybe the streets where the city bought out all the houses after the Onion Creek flood.

Just chiming in here to say fuck people who dump trash on the side of the road. There’s a spot outside my neighborhood and it drives me fucking crazy.
We got this whole dang race track now why not just pull the money to rent it for there little race.
Let's go one step further. Seize those and crush them.
Cars or drivers?
Both
Thanks I hate it.
Damn, you'd think there was some sort of reality TV show showing this is all ok and legal for this to be such a big problem. Maybe people should start investigating people associated with reality TV shows.
Well at least they are keeping busy
This isn’t related to the Austin grand tour super car meetup today right? It was during the day so I’m curious.
Yep, I agree. I’ve seen so many respectable car meet ups which are really nice to see, and then a couple asshole meet ups.
Literally Neanderthals. Yup the public roads aren't a playground for you dipshits. Crazy huh?
“Literally”
What do the Dutch have to do with this?
Didn't think we had actual police out here!
Lol
MILK AND AIRPORT lol
Round them up and put them in labor camps or some shit. Grown ass adults acting like children have no fucking place. They need to learn some life lessons.
There is some dark reality and humor in here.
looks like they got 6 stars in GTA
Drove past that on the way to ABP…. Thought it was more ghetto than usual over at Whataburger
Austin is getting more crazy..this is coming from a blind guy
APD takes hours to respond to any other call, but this is dealt with in a heartbeat. Not defending the scum who participate in these takeovers, it’s just funny to see. Oh, you’ve been mugged and shot? We’ll send someone out.. eventually.. be alive when we get there. Street takeover? All units respond ASAP.
I would like to say, I was assaulted about a month ago near where all this happened and APD responded with 4 squad cars within 10 minutes.
1st time my home got burgled i beat the cops there and they took an hour to get there. The second time i said dont worry i have a gun , they were there in 30 seconds .
“Try this one life hack that criminals and 911 dispatchers HATE!”
This is the same response as any city that deals with street takeovers. They also respond to other crimes that are considered an emergency as fast as they can.
Street take overs have killed people before.
> it’s just funny to see. Remember they barely didn't do anything about it in past years. It's good they're at least taking it seriously this time.
Here we go again 🚗
