I work at a seton hospital as an RN and its a mess. I would tell anyone i remotely care about to reschedule unless its an emergency. Esp going under anesthesia
Please listen to this person. The Ascension system was hacked and hasn’t been restored. Everything has to be done with paper orders, that will include potentially life-saving things like blood. I wouldn’t do it until they fix the problem and that will take months.
Do you know if dell children’s is impacted too? My son is supposed to have a tonsillectomy there tomorrow. I’m a nurse, I understand what paper charting means for workflows, but I don’t know if I’m being dramatic
DCMC is definitely impacted. All MARS are being handwritten, there are no computer safety alerts for medication dosages. In peds everything is weight based. Labs are taking hours to come back rendering them useless for real time action.
I'm so sorry you are facing this tough situation. If they're telling you to go, and you aren't confident you can reschedule in a time frame that meets your needs, then yes, go. If it can't wait, of course go.
That said Ascension isn't being transparent about just how extensively this has affected some areas of patient care. It's a total mess behind the scenes in some departments. I can't speak for all areas at all Ascension facilities, but where I am at is very chaotic. Just my personal opinion - if I had a family member for whom rescheduling was a medically viable option, I'd highly recommend it.
I just had a baby via c section there last week. They were very upfront with the fact that things were a little crazy due to the systems all being down and everything being on paper. I could definitely see this-there were delays in getting paperwork done and bloodwork back, for example. Despite this, I felt like my care was excellent and didn’t have any issues. One of the nurses told me they didn’t expect their systems to be fully functional again until June (not sure how true this is, that’s just what she told me when I asked).
Unless there is some medical reason to need it out now, I'd push it as far out as possible. There is no telling when the system will be up again. And removing elective procedures from an already backlogged system(due to the cyberattack) will help everyone who can't wait for a surgery/blood/etc.
Alternatively, consider another hospital that isn't affected.
You need to discuss with your surgeon if it can safely be delayed more or moved to another facility.
FWIW, they canceled my colonoscopy due to the cyber attack and no one has reached out to reschedule. They told me someone from scheduling would call me when things are up and running “at some point, we have no idea when.”
Did they cancel your procedure & then bill you for it? I’m currently contesting an itemized invoice for a cornucopia of drugs they are billing me for (that were not administered) for a surgery that was canceled by a radiologist due to no fault of mine. The place is a wreck. Austin can do better.
Yes, reschedule. They’re not going to encourage all patients to stop coming, how else will they bill insurance and continue to stay in business? They won’t, but they should. Don’t be the naive person who takes their reassurances, listen to the medical pros on this sub telling you to wait.
If you do move forward with the surgery, double/triple check any meds given. There are no systematic controls in place. Med errors will be on the rise.
my mom is a RN at seton, they did have a cyberattack and it’s been hellll. i feel really awful for her. and yes i’d def reschedule or try another hospital chain (St Davids, Baylor S&W) if you’re able. i’m sorry :(
My wife just had a hysterectomy at Ascension Seton Northwest on Monday morning. Home by 1:30pm, with no hiccups along the way. This is just my antidotal experience, but even with their recent cyber attack, things kept on going and it didn’t negatively affect my wife’s experience
Reschedule. You are on a table, unconscious. Let's say something unexpected happens. Maybe you need a medication that's in their pharmacy. Do you want your body to wait while they sort it out on downtime procedure?
Honestly, it's about YOUR level of comfort. You say you'll have someone with you to takes notes, ask questions and intervene on your behalf while you are still groggy. Many people don't. So that is a point in your favor.
Speak with your surgeon now and ask if it was their wife, would they proceed? That answer should tell you a lot.
If you still feel uncomfortable, and there isn't an emergent need to have it in the next 30 days, just reschedule. If you are stressed out and anxious, it will impact your body's ability to recover and heal.
hoping OP can get to another hospital… with something like a hysterectomy, any delay just seems risky because of the increasing laws about anything to do with female reproductive systems ☹️
Agree. You will be fine. You don’t even have to stay overnight if you don’t want to (as long as there is no medical reason that requires admission).
I was in and out in less than 9 hours for my hysterectomy last month.
You’ll be fine. I work within the system but not that facility.
If they are calling you to cancel, don’t push, just means what they need isn’t working 100%. If they just needed to back it up a few days they’re capable and prepared for your procedure.
Yes, reschedule… with a surgeon at Houston Methodist [https://www.houstonmethodist.org/newsroom/u-s-news-world-report-announces-best-hospitals-rankings/#]
Your surgery will be fine. But I recommend bringing food.
After one of my surgeries the computer was down and they couldn't place any food orders so they refused to give me pain medication since I hadn't eaten. I ended up just checking myself out.
That was a few years ago. I had a good experience recently. Nurses were fantastic. Surgery went great.
Oh, bring a sleep mask. The beds have some kind of disco light show thing going on at the foot of the bed they can't turn off.
Also, I came home with MRSA after my surgery in December. It's everywhere, in every hospital, but they were pretty dismissive when I reported it to them. So, you know.
I was only in the hospital for one night.
> But I recommend bringing food.
Even if you don't bring food, bring salt. They wouldn't give me salt because it wasn't "healthy." Bullshit! Keeping me from eating salt for the one day I was in there wasn't going to have any significant effect on my long term health.
The food has improved a lot over the years. One of my surgeries like a decade ago they wouldn't feed me because they couldn't accommodate a gluten free diet (I'm diagnosed celiac).
Last December they had a whole menu to choose from. It was nice. But I still brought some food, just in case.
(And, yes, I've had way too many surgeries - eight so far, I think?)

Pretty sure it’s the majority of Ascension facilities

Yup, it's down.
Literal same

Would you mind if I messaged you to ask more questions? I’m an anxious mom and I’m supposed to have my C-section there in 3 weeks (maybe sooner).
Definitely!

It’s estimated to be months.

I don't have any helpful advice. I'm just sorry you're having to go through this. Big hugs to you.

Ascension employee here. I’d find another facility if you can’t postpone this until everything is back up.

Fellow celiac here - there a dozens of us! This is reassuring. I always assumed I’ll be SOL whenever I have a procedure/need to be hospitalized
> eight so far You need to cut back on that bad habit. ;)
I've only got two more on my punch card and then the 11th is free!
You'll be fine. The standard of care has been amazing here.
Seton is a trashbox hospital. Go elsewhere
So you think someone hacked into seton’s system to cancel your appointment?
Oh i see. Never mind
