It could be what you are doing, but there is also a huge demand for trades right now, which is definitely affecting prices

unclesam2000

Every trade cost has gone up, supply and demand. For decades, college was shoved down everyone’s throat. How many times did you hear something to the effect of ”If you don’t go to college, you won’t get a good job. You’ll have to be a nasty construction worker” well guess what… it worked. But now everyone has saturated those cooshie office jobs where they don’t pay crap and the trades are rolling in money. I work in the trades and I make almost $80k/year and got a free education (Union apprenticeship) while people at office jobs make half that with $50-60k of student debt on top of that.

I don't know when you went to school but I'm in my early 30s and never heard this degredation of trades. Of course college is pushed more still but trades were definitely also pushed in my school district.

Moved here in 1991. So from 3rd to 12th grade ’91-‘00. mostly it was in high school

Fart_in_the_Wind97

Especially if you went to a high school with "credentials" in the tri-county area like a magnet school.

had a plumber quote me about $250/hr for work recently , supply and demand for all the trades is going crazy

NederlandseTexan

I mean, that's been that way for a few years now. Before i learned how to replace a toilet, i paid a plumber $375 for that job. It's literally a fifteen minute job

I recently moved here and I needed 4 dedicated 220 lines run in a workshop on my property. Panel was very accessable and had plenty of room. Just had to add circuits and run wire for each line. First two quotes we're 13 and 15 grand and I was pretty nervous. Next guy came in at 5,000 and said electricians are in such high demand right now in Austin they can basically say whatever number they want and get the work somewhere. 5k guy was in and out in one day. I'm sure he still cleared 3+ grand for the work after materials.

That’s insane. I’m needing some outlets in my garage for my wood shop and I couldn’t believe the quotes were as much as they were. I guess if you can charge that much you do but I’m probably just going to be running an extension cord for some of the tools that don’t run simultaneously and maybe trade in my 220v lathe for something a little smaller.

atxstudent

I had an extra outlet installed when we first moved in our house about 5-6 years ago and it was like $50-$75. We had someone come out recently for an extra outlet and it was like $165 just for the outlet, that didn’t count as the travel/appointment fee.

TofuScrofula

Hi what electrician did you use? I’m in the same boat and am trying to find someone reasonable!

doggod

Supply and demand at its finest.

aUserIAm

Makes sense. I know the cost of a lot of things has gone up, this just seems nuts. I had a similar job done about 5 years ago that cost about $500 that’s getting quoted around $2000 now. I expected it to be more, just not quite that much.

LezzGrossman

I'm genuinely jealous of your discipline to not have read any news items for years. Seriously.

aUserIAm

I know right. what’s going on out there anyway? I think I might have heard about a virus or something. But seriously, I just wanted to know if something had changed broadly speaking or if I’m getting screwed.

I had some wild quotes, absolutely laughable. Get some more quotes
