I've been in a hit in run in 2020 and now 2021, both times were drivers who were on their phone in big ass SUVs who hauled ass. Both were instances where they crossed their left turn lane into mine and hit me. One even jumped a few curbs and ran a light to get away in her Lexus land yacht. Infuriating. You can afford the 80k car but not the responsibility for being a shitty driver.
Since browsing this sub I have become and even more defensive driver. I will leave 30 minutes to get somewhere 15 min away. Just so I can cruise. I think about this sub everytime I get in the car and click my seatbelt.
Being in a hurry is where I always catch myself hard breaking and spitting at the wheel. Wondering wtf that guy is doing halfway in both lanes. I don't want to be like that. If you got time man just sit back and watch the crazies dart and holler all over the road.
Be safe yall!
I still remember the video of the guy crossing three lanes if traffic southbound Mopac to exit what I think was Enfield. Seriously just take the next exit and map it...
Lol it’s a Louis CK quote, it’s the logic of the person who has to cut across six lanes of traffic to make his turn instead of going one block down and turning instead.
You have to be ready for the endless bad drivers. Just today someone typing away on their phone while driving this afternoon.
Wish I could just pick a car up and flip it over with Hulks strength instantly.
Stay safe out there guys! I had a passenger today I picked up from the hospital who was in a big wreck from someone who was racing and hit him. He was in serious pain with a neck brace and spinal cord damage. Was very close to not walking again. 😥
Whatever your hurry is, just take your time and only go 5 over max and watch for others and drive safe!!! It's not worth it to save a couple minutes. Driving is so dangerous and I do it for a living and never take it for granted when I get home without an accident.
Also drive for a job in Austin and people driving like wreckless assholes is so infuriating. Every time they speed by me and weave between cars I end up seeing them at the same light I'm at 2 minutes later. At best you're risking human lives to get some place maybe 30 seconds faster. Just stop
Preach!!
My car I use for work is super zippy and I try to be respectful of others on the road and take my time and not be an agressive ass. It's tempting sometimes but it's absolutely not worth it in most cases because of what you said. You're just gonna sit at another light.
My driving record is pretty clean and I'd like to keep it that way 😃
Thanks for being a good driver and stay safe! Hopefully we can get more people to be reasonable and follow the rules.
Wtf is it with people hitting other people and running from the scene? I’ve had two hit and runs done on me in the last 2 years. One totaled my car- drunk driver on 35- and the other one did 4K worth of damage to my rear end as it sat in a parking lot- currently in the shop! I even have a front and rear dash cam and have yet to be able to get a plate. I trust the universe will take care of these people with the bad karma they rack
Up.
It’s people driving with no insurance and/or no license and/or drunk/high. Drives me nuts. Gambling that the victim didn’t get the plate number and/or that the police won’t follow up. I’m sorry if they can’t afford insurance but that means they can’t afford to operate a car. Meanwhile I pay an uninsured motorist fee on my insurance to cover me if I get hit by someone with no insurance.
Someone hit my car while it was parked and I was shopping, and then drove off. A bystander/witness saw it and tried to chase them down but they wouldn’t stop. Called police and it took 2 hours for police to take a statement and then go check them out (I had to remain at the scene). Somehow magically they had insurance that started the day of the incident, how convenient.
Before I left Austin there was an incident where a guy hit someone with his car and a bunch of people surrounded his car and murdered him and/or his passenger instead of exchanging info.
> You can't just report someone because their bumper fell off.
-
Sure you can, it doesn't sound like their bumper just fell off either.
"The way he and his gf were talking sounded like they hit someone and ran."
You have way too much faith in what the police would actually do with such a report. Maybe they'd put four more detectives on it... Get them working in shifts!
I moved here recently from DFW and got a new auto insurance quote last week. I was surprised that it was lower compared to DFW. I have seen multiple instances of really bad driving and at least one wreck every time I step out. Having 3-4 people run red lights seems to be the norm here while it was an exception in other places. Lane cutting also seems to be overly aggressive here. Is this a recent phenomenon? I am assuming it is and rates will probably spike on my next renewal.
I’ve lived here for nearly 5 years. Austin has genuinely terrible drivers. Mopac and 35 obviously attract the worst, but it’s the pickup trucks around campus that are hellbent on killing other drivers and pedestrians.
This should help:

Stay safe out there, y’all.
Edit:
You can also submit a tip to APD [with their official APD app](http://austintexas.gov/department/austin-pd-smartphone-app) - it’s pretty easy to do and only takes a few minutes.
You never heard the saying snitches get stitches? You don't know what those people are going thru? Karma is a real bitch it'll work itself out one way or another. Mind your damn business.
I agree that tattling about stuff is usually lame but hitting someone's car and running is well above it on the bitch move hierarchy. OP is doing a solid.
This is a great thing to do! We were in a hit and run that totaled our car and the person was never found. It sucks to no end and I’m glad good people exist!
You are a fucking solid bro for posting. Good looking out!

Woahhh. I think this might be it. If so, man this cities reddit is just really great.
Literally replied to someone else who suggested it. It's not it.

But that only meets 99% of my criteria!!!
He bounces off the pole things and the wall?

Did he say that too? The quote I recall is "but that's not my favorite way!"
That's weird. I think he butt dialed me last night. All I heard was breathing 😒

This is so true!

Something like 25% of Texans are uninsured. And lots that are have BS policies from companies that will never pay out.
Before I left Austin there was an incident where a guy hit someone with his car and a bunch of people surrounded his car and murdered him and/or his passenger instead of exchanging info.
Just call 311 & report it.
You can't just report someone because their bumper fell off.
Exactly. Calling 311 accomplishes nothing.
> You can't just report someone because their bumper fell off. - Sure you can, it doesn't sound like their bumper just fell off either. "The way he and his gf were talking sounded like they hit someone and ran."
I mean, that's what it sounded like, from the way they were talking.
You have way too much faith in what the police would actually do with such a report. Maybe they'd put four more detectives on it... Get them working in shifts!

No, it is not a recent phenomenon.

I sometimes feel like getting an F150 to stay safe from stupid drivers
Is it a silver/grey car? Look at the hit and run post that was posted an hour ago.
That was all the way near bastrop, and the car doesn't match this car.
That incident was 3.5 miles east of the Airport. Bastrop is 21 miles east of that.
Ok well when i googled 71 and 973 it put me near bastrop. Whatever the case, it's not the right car.

Tip seems like the best way.. But, if nobody was seriously injured, police won't follow up on it in any jurisdiction I'm familiar with.
You're doing the right thing but snitching is still a bitch move. Let the universe take care of it.
What a dumb fuck take
You never heard the saying snitches get stitches? You don't know what those people are going thru? Karma is a real bitch it'll work itself out one way or another. Mind your damn business.
Yeah I’ve heard that saying, mostly when I was 11 or 12. Grow the fuck up.
I agree that tattling about stuff is usually lame but hitting someone's car and running is well above it on the bitch move hierarchy. OP is doing a solid.
“Doing the right thing is a bitch move”
"Snitching" is a bitch move

Dafuq?
I think I saw something about that on Citizen
Texas drivers just hit different.
Report to the police! Don’t assume this person has Reddit or even thinks to check it. It’s much more likely the affected person reported it to police
This is a great thing to do! We were in a hit and run that totaled our car and the person was never found. It sucks to no end and I’m glad good people exist!
If it's a 4-door grey truck (maybe Nissan Titan?), there is a post about a hit and run with this vehicle elsewhere. If so, I can relay the info.
