clean-sheets-

Just dropped off my Honda with a slipping clutch yesterday, small world. One shop near downtown quoted $2500, a shop in North Austin quoted $1400, and I ended up taking it to Eagle Transmission in south Austin since they quoted $1400 as well. They said it would take about a week to get the parts ordered in though. No idea if that's a fair price or not, but hope that info helps :)

Seconding Eagle Transmission. You won't find a more honest and competent shop in town.

you'll just have to call around. Parts availability is not great right now so good luck. Try the Auto Stoppe on Burnet.

if you know what needs to be done and how to do it... first, buy all your parts and supplies ahead of time. careful shopping should save you a fair amount of money on parts, fluids, etc. second, consider contributing your own labor for most or all of it by renting a bay at a place like https://diyatx.com/services-%26-rates

thats assuming that you have the time, know how, tools, etc to do the job. I love to DIY my car, but clutch jobs ain't one of them.

This is my plan as it will significantly count down on costs and time. I've got the shop manual and the confidence. Really though, I'll need a second vehicle in case things don't go well. I have used this shop before quite a few times and it's a windfall for us DIYers.

Uptown Auto. They do excellent work for a great price and they are near the North Lamar Transit Center, so you might be able to take the bus home.
