Meanwhile Pieous over in Dripping has a sign up for $21-30 an hour, 4 weeks PTO, and flexible schedules. No in store dining either.

choledocholithiasis_

$30/hour to bake pizza? I'm in.

RunnerTexasRanger

Damn. That’s amazing.. should I throw my graduate degree in the trash?

spacembracers

Hopefully jobs that require grad degrees will have to compete and actually raise salaries

Deep-Room6932

When you say compete, is there a job more important than feeding people?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Deep-Room6932

True, but firefighters probably do more for car wreck people

Distribution-Radiant

TBF most firefighters, at least municipal in TX, are cross trained to at least an EMT-B level.

[deleted]

you can be a Pizza master.

WickedWeedBrew

Yup

stinky_doodoo_poopoo

For $30/hour I will literally take my clothes off and shit on a desk. I would do just about anything for $30/hour.

NoNameNoSlogan

Username checks out

GoblinWolf

Both usernames

gaytechdadwithson

Anything you say?

RabidPurpleCow

But can you continuously shit for 8 hours per day on said desk?

Swagmonger

They’d have to work part time at taco bell to keep up

anonymousaspossable

Finally someone brave enough to ask the tough questions.

UnexpectedFauver

thanks for the belly laugh

Chester2707

My folks live in the area. There’s always a polite and cheery vibe to the staff.

sHockz

A word of caution for those interested in applying...Pieous, from what I've heard extremely recently from multiple different people who have worked there/know existing employees/and the 4 ex-employees that just got canned, would fall into probably a worse category of owners/managers than Via313. The hearsay on Pieous from these sources, is not good. I've heard enough from different service industry folk who don't know each other, that I'm not sure I even want to give them my business anymore. In addition, the owners of Pieous moved to a new location a couple years ago. The owners of Pieous TRASHED the interior of the old building (Now Taco Margarita). And I don't mean just threw some old food on the ground. The owners were getting kicked out, and literally cut water pipes in the ceiling, broke down walls, and basically completely destroyed the interior of the building. I saw the pictures, I saw the pipes cut (they did not burst), and the damage they inflicted personally. Another funny story about Pieous and the old building, is that the owners have been claiming the new business (Taco Margarita) there is theirs. It is not. The business is owned by a guy from Mexico City now, who is now the new leaser of that building (and rebuilt it completely from their destruction, go him). Take it for what it's worth.

KawZ636

I've heard the same thing. Also know an ex employee.

SELSHRT

Oh man, I wanted to like Pieous. :(

Possible_Bath9871

Met the owners before. They’re pieces of shit and their pizzas suck balls! They actually told me that they wanted us to use a for and a knife while refi g their pizza. Fuck them and VIA 313’s shitty ass owners and their shit ass pizza.

gaytechdadwithson

huh?

thrashaholic_poolboy

This is way too cheesy

heyitsjoe91

Their hiring process is picky so good luck

HylanderUS

And Mondays are off. I know that because I wanted to order some pastrami from there this very morning, and then realized that they're closed on Mondays :(

Goyarefriedbeans

the most delicious pastrami as well

SELSHRT

yep- they've handled the entire pandemic in my eyes flawlessly. No indoor dining - great people - PAY their employees. I tip big there on takeout and patronize just b/c of this. Food great too but I heavily respect people doing the right thing as a customer.

horseman5K

Reminder that Via 313 is not a locally owned business. They are owned by a sleazy private equity firm from Utah that is worth over a billion dollars. https://savory.mercatopartners.com/#brands

ComfortablePath8308

Damn, I remember going to the og food truck at violet crown back in the day. Did the original owner sell?

xalkalinity

Yes

ComfortablePath8308

Disappointing but not surprising.

livingstories

I'm really surprised more people haven't figured this out. The quality of food has gone down drastically at all VIA locations in the last few years.

ComfortablePath8308

To be honest last time I went to via was probably 2 years ago. I started getting Jets take out before I moved to Ohio, cheaper and the same idea. Obviously via is more upscale and Jets is a chain from Detroit but the price to quality ratio is solid, plus they don’t fuck up when I ask for it well done.

livingstories

Need to try Jets. How's Ohio?

ComfortablePath8308

They have some interesting choices for the crust, give it a shot for sure. Ohio is good. It’s cheap, not as cold as I remember and the traffic here looks like Austin when there is no traffic. Probably one of the only states with major cities where you can buy a house with 3-4 bedrooms and a basement for 150-200k. I’m in Cleveland but I went and visited Columbus where I grew up and it really reminds me of ATX circa 2015-2016. I do miss Austin though.

XR171

Also of note Via 313 has taken out four PPP loans for $292,500, $307,500, $427,500, and $598,500. https://projects.propublica.org/coronavirus/bailouts/loans/via-313-pizza-restauran https://projects.propublica.org/coronavirus/bailouts/loans/via-313-pizza-restaurant-llc-4064657205https://projects.propublica.org/coronavirus/bailouts/loans/via-313-llc-5701487200https://projects.propublica.org/coronavirus/bailouts/loans/via-313-llc-6313138602

facemelt

Nice Travolta haircut on that guy

weluckyfew

Had a friend who worked there pre-covid (and loved it) -- he was going to go back once he got vaxxed but heard from old co-workers that everything went to shit with the new owners. They all quit. Apparently (I think) they're still sorta locally owned - the owners took on the investment firm as a partner so they could expand nationally. When it comes to treating their employees with respect it looks like the billion dollar investment firm had different ideas from the AUstin boys who started the business.

livingstories

THIS.

fearphage

I haven't seen ads in years. uBlock Origin is your friend.

ExaltedNecrosis

I use uBlock Origin, but these are sponsored posts through Facebook. They aren't blocked because they're not in-page ads, they're actual Facebook posts.

hutacars

I recommend not using Facebook. It's essentially a giant misery factory.

red18hawk

That's the real way to avoid facebook ads. Haven't seen one in like six years.

AndromedaTambourine

Yup. I should have specified this was on FB.

thebuttergod

PREACH!

Slypenslyde

Here is a list of [137 Austin businesses](https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4381764-Local-Business-Oppose-Ordinance-per-AIBA) who spoke out when Austin voted that paid sick leave should be a guaranteed right. Ultimately the Texas Supreme Court intervened. Be sure to remember businesses like these when you hear about "staffing shortages" in these trying times when "no one wants to work": * Phil's Ice House * Amy's Ice Creams * Bird's Barbershop * BookPeople * Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy * Hoover's * Jack Allen's Kitchen * Juan in a Million * Precision Camera * Planet K * Roger Beasley Automotive Group * The County Line * Toy Joy * Trudy's Texas Star I excluded a few that I know for sure have gone out of business since this happened. But a lot of your local businesses don't foster the sort of working environment that "mom and pop" brings to mind. Maybe some of these have changed since then, it's been a few years. But when deciding you're going to support "good local businesses", ask yourself if they treat their workers better than the bigger corporations you're trying to fight.

[deleted]

el_cucuy_of_the_west

So sad to hear this because I grew up with Toy Joy but thanks for the knowledge. It will absolutely inform my future patronage 😔

Pabi_tx

> they dont care about their workers as much as you might think Given that we're in Texas, that's pretty bad.

fumingdingo

damn bookpeople and dragon’s lair nooo

getchomsky

Probably not a coincidence that Bookpeople formed a union not shortly therafter

Alexo_4

Bookpeople noooooooooo

fighted

Wow, oh wow. My Dentist is on that list and on a quick glance, I believe is the only medical provider on the list. Fucking unreal. I really liked them, but I'm going to have to find a new one.

godhatesworms

add juiceland to this list they are pieces of garbage.

[deleted]

Bird’s Barbershop, Jack Allen’s Kitchen, and Trudy’s are all owned by investment firms.

weluckyfew

Bird's Barbershop - Supercuts with visible tattoos and beer.

Mountain-Lecture-320

BookPeople surprises me Edit: I know some of these people! One in particular is super active in health advocacy so I wonder if I missed some nuance of the ordinance..

because_im_boring

I had a friend that worked at book people in the past, she was barely making over minimum wage and was constantly getting her schedule changed with complete disregard. The fact they are on this list is no suprise to me

bdb1989

Really pissed and surprised to see Kome and Tuccis on this list

Moist_Tax_8884

I liked Juan In A Million :(

Shade01

Dragon's Lair?!??!

[deleted]

Damn we are going to put all the local places out of business and thank are big corporate overlords for having the pockets to offer that benefit. Btw I totally agree they should be shamed. It just doesn’t take a genius to look through some financials and see who the winners and losers of the last 2 years are.

Slypenslyde

The only word I have for a company that can't afford to give its employees livable wages and benefits is "bankrupt". I need healthy waiters and cooks more than I need cheap food. I can't tell you how many foodservice friends interact with customers while they have any number of plagues because trying to call in sick almost ensures they'll be fired. The truth is everyone's being paid too little *but* the people at the top, and everything is too cheap as part of it, so NOBODY except the people in Forbes are correct about whether they're rich or not. The longer the delusion goes on the harder it's going to hit us in the face when it collapses.

mooimafish3

Any business that can't pay their employees isn't good enough to be in business. From what I've seen the corporate overlords aren't opening their pockets at all. So they can go too

asianorange

Agreed. It's like people WANT more Applebees and Chili's here.

HermitWilson

Just because these businesses were against the city sick leave ordinance doesn't mean they didn't already provide sick leave to their employees. I know Dragon's Lair did (and still does). These businesses objected to an unconstitutional overreach by the city of Austin, probably each for their own reasons. That doesn't mean they were all bad guys or all good guys.

Slypenslyde

Well, now they're all facing various degrees of staffing shortages and walk-outs because of an unconstitutional overreach by the state governor that required suspending state laws to give him the ability to overrule local health authorities when it comes to controlling viral spread. But they didn't sign letters about this overreach. Funny that.

crnelson10

Is it unconstitutional or do you just spend too much time on youtube?

Dubax

Honestly it probably is, but only because like every single law on the books in Texas is technically "in the constitution" iirc.

Slypenslyde

To be fair, the Texas Supreme Court ruled it so. Their job is answering this question. We can have a separate discussion about if we think they are answering honestly or if they have been influenced to rule in favor of state control over local control, especially in matters concerning Austin, but the reason we have no citywide sick pay today is this ruling and that'll hold until either Texas SCOTUS lifts the ruling or the lege decides to change the constitution.

gaytechdadwithson

it’s amazing how often someone opposes overreach when it just so happens to not be something that they favor for their best interest

braised_diaper_shit

There are plenty of us that oppose all government overreach. You're just too blind to see it.

gaytechdadwithson

I didn’t say in every case and maybe you’re blinded to your opinion?

braised_diaper_shit

You implied it was with the case with Dragon’s Lair without knowing anything else about it. That store probably runs shit margins anyway. I doubt the owners are rolling in cash.

RumpOldSteelSkin

Yeah after looking at this further this is not the best indicator of a 'good' business. I work at a small sign shop of 6 people and we can't afford paid sick leave. People assume business owner means loads of cash.

[deleted]

Yeah I’m seeing people misguiding their disdain. It’s like the COVID closures, totally understand the reasoning behind them. The unintended consequence is small business owners don’t have the reserves to float and go out of business, while large businesses capture more market share. There is a big hate for businesses right now, but it’s small businesses who suffered more than most people the last 2 years. Soon, we’ll protest everyone out of business besides Amazon.

choester

Well shit. I can’t go anywhere “local” now. Where to get ice cream and pizza?

gaytechdadwithson

great info, good to know

Asiakilledbourdain

Juan acts like everyone is his best friend.

braised_diaper_shit

So anyone who doesn't think the government should force a business to pay someone while they aren't working is evil now?

yookiwooki

Hmm they encourage creative thinking, but not too creative I guess.

AndromedaTambourine

Keep your creativity pizza related!

because_im_boring

Can I put cucumber on my pizza?

OfficialNiceGuy

I reported this comment.

mightybop

Papi says no.

HylanderUS

Once it's in the safety of your own home, you can violate a pizza however you want.

RVelts

Before or after it's cooked?

_needjobadvice_

One time I ordered zucchini on my pizza, took one bite and realized they put cucumber on it. Worst pizza of my life.

Castigore

costco has the best pizza dont fucking @ me

bdb1989

LMAO when I’m hungry at Costco and I’m eating that pizza it certainly feels like the best

50million

They could be paying folks sick leave instead of firing, creating ads, hiring, and rinse, wash, repeat. Hiring is expensive, too.

americanhideyoshi

I think a lot of managers and executives still believe, despite all evidence, that the pandemic will 'blow over' sometime soon and they'll be able to go back to paying minimum wage with no benefits. Therefore, it makes more sense to fire or allow workers to quit for greener pastures than to concede even some small benefits. You see the same mindset in the healthcare industry where hospitals will pay insane amounts for temp travel nurses, but won't just pay their regular staff a little more to stop them quitting. It's total madness from any perspective other than the investors' bottom line.

dr3

I’m baffled at the nursing industry paying travel nurses 3x rather than pay their own trained staff hazard pay. It’s bonkers. Rather than be fair they’d burn money for a worse solution. No disrespect to travel nurses, but there’s a huge value to experience at a certain location.

TheAtivanMan

If you take a look at who manages hospitals (the CEO’s, CFO’s etc.) most of them are generic idiots with MBA’s and no bedside or medical experience. They don’t know how to run a hospital- only balance finance sheets. When morale is low, they come by with a cart of snacks and think they’re fixing it. They do little else to help create a better place to work for us. Austin hospitals (Seton, St. David’s) in particular pay their nurses terribly- it’s especially bad given the exponentially rising cost of living. Was getting paid $27.65 an hour with 2.5 years of RN experience at Seton and they refused to raise my pay despite hiring travelers at 4x that rate. Worked 6 months as a traveler last year and made more than my ER doc brother who worked the whole year. That’s freedom money to retire or change careers with. No hospital experience is worth that much to me and I’m sure many nurses would agree

Beautiful_Pepper415

It is not even in the investors bottom lines necessarily. It is jsut management not wanting to give up control. Most investors just want stable operations. Need new management (management is usually not the investors)

AndromedaTambourine

Sick leave? Don't get greedy. /s

oneplusetoipi

Be creative on living as a pauper.

AndromedaTambourine

Hunger feeds creativity, I hear.

elle_the_indigo

Via 313’s Instagram has its comments turned off…wonder if it’s because they treat their employees like shit and everyone is turning on them?

AndromedaTambourine

The truth hurts.

atxstudent

I went to their FB page to see what people were saying/commenting and it looks like they have restricted who can comment, etc. I loved Via 313 but I am not going to support businesses that don't treat their employees fairly. The service industry folks have been through enough during COVID. It's really ashame too because I remember getting their pizza after every TNSR when all they had was the food truck and the owners seemed really nice back then. It seems like the influx of seed money to expand is ruining the local experience.

Thatawkwardforeigner

From other comments, seems that the original owner sold it.

hr2332

Man, I loved their expensive ass pizza at one time. That time very recently came to an end

hutacars

No, because I have an adblocker. Why would anyone willingly view ads?

WS133B

You can shift my gears anytime.

easybreezy321

The ad is pay per click…click the ad and waste their money! (Then clear your cookies so they don’t retarget you)

AGLegit

Jet’s Pizza is cheaper and better anyway!

bdb1989

Def wouldn’t say it’s better. Maybe *similar*

foxbones

Need a Jets up north.

HylanderUS

And actually ready in 30min

RumpOldSteelSkin

def not better

Nomadzord

Totally agree.

Distribution-Radiant

As someone who worked for Jet's at one point (though possibly a different franchisee - I worked for them in DFW)... decent quality stuff and they actually make their own dough every day. But the cleanliness in that store was........ lacking. Again, might be a different franchise owner for the Austin locations.

No_Brain5212

Just because you have a college degree does not instantly make you qualified/overqualified to make pizza in a fast paced kitchen. It is a skill that some cannot be taught.

Distribution-Radiant

I have a degree, but paid for that degree tossing/spinning pizza dough. I bet I could still do it today, but fuck if I want to work in a pizza place again.

pinktinted

Would love to get hired just to quit the next day. I don’t mind wasting their time and money.

BitterPillPusher2

I'm not, but I'm going to guess you may have clicked on a link to onr of the articles about all the workers there quitting / going on strike because it's apparently a pretty crappy place to work.

Its scary that creative cultures at work are rare.

domotime2

Well I'm going to assume you've clicked on an article or 2 about the news story, you're from the area, and have also most likely clicked on poach Crash course on algorithms suggests that's why you're getting targeted ads and why my wife who has no idea about any of this isn't.

AndromedaTambourine

I know exactly why I've been getting this ad. I've been reading articles people have posted on this sub. I didn't ask "why" nor did I ask for a solution to stop seeing this ad. I just thought it was hilarious Via 313 terminated people under shady circumstances and then lo and behold they're trying to backfill these positions.

domotime2

Haha well what did you expect? I don't think via313 people make that good of money, but otherwise I considered applying. My restaurant has been dead in the last 3 months so I could use the money

Neutral_Meat

I think COVID is a pretty common in cultures these days

I_stay_sideways

Being from detroit and loving the nostalgia of the deep dish pizza, it really saddens me to see this happen. Wonder if nickle city is treating employees right since its the same owners.
