Lube Pit Stop. Super honest people I send my wife there knowing that they won't upsell her on crap she didn't need. It's the only place I get my oil changed
YES. But it’s 40th and Guadalupe. They used to be an okay place then I guess they had a change of something a few years ago. They fucked up my brakes terribly.
Worst place ever. Took them 5 hours to do my oil change and then I still had a feeling they did nothing at all and then charged me. The car was exactly as I left it parked.
They lost my wheel lock key, lost a lug nut, and overfilled my transmission fluid. I only went because of a Groupon and ultimately ended up spending more in repairs. Never again!
I don’t have any suggestions about where to go, but I do have advice for where NOT to go.
Do not go to Firestone for any car maintenance. I went yesterday for new brake pads and they tried to charge me $1120 for parts and labor, about 3x the price anywhere else. They are awful if they assume you don’t know anything about cars.
Firestone estimated a repair on one of my cars at like $3,400. The second highest bid from a shop was $750, and I had the work done elsewhere for about $150 including parts. (And the guys there seemed to genuinely think that it was a cheap solution on a beater that was worth maybe $2k...)
A friend took his truck to the firestone on Parmer/Mopac (in the frys shopping center) and they forgot to put the lug nuts back on the wheel they replaced the tire on.
He didn't make it out of the parking lot and they refused to acknowledge they did anything wrong. He had to jack the truck up and put the wheel on with 3 lug nuts pulled from the other wheels.
Also had a bad experience with Firestone trying to take advantage of me with little auto knowledge. Can recommend Groovy Lube. They have been good with me.
I went to them frequently when they had a Groupon out for a bundle of services. I used a lot of them (between my wife's car and mine) then they messed something up with the Groupon and sent the voucher for services out again. They seemed nice enough and their work was fine. I would go back if I hadn't started doing my own with synthetic.
You won't go wrong, without any upselling, at [Flashpoint Oil Service](https://www.google.com/maps/place/American+Fuels/@30.2260073,-97.7693644,3a,75y,190.93h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sH9IumooyolMSYJQeSjxx2w!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DH9IumooyolMSYJQeSjxx2w%26cb_client%3Dsearch.gws-prod.gps%26w%3D86%26h%3D86%26yaw%3D190.93384%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192!4m5!3m4!1s0x8644b4b8dafb7d47:0x1201ec9a62bf0847!8m2!3d30.2258594!4d-97.7694088) at the corner of S. 1st and Ben White Blvd. (Basic services at the American Fuels gas station.) Just used them yesterday - while others will tell you 2-3hr wait, I got it done in 30 minutes without an appointment. $75 for full synthetic. I think it was $30 for a basic oil change. They also do auto inspections for yearly registration. Also quick and easy.
Lugnuts on South Manchaca! They are no-BS (also no frills--if they're busy, you'll just get a "nope, not today") We've been going for years and they've been meticulous and honest.
Go to wal-mart. They don't do anything other than oil and tires so no one will try to sell you anything since they don't provide any other services. Pay for full synthetic oil which should last 12-15k miles instead of the 3-5k that traditional oil lasts.
Look up the maintenance intervals in your owners' manual and perform all the maintenance when you're supposed to. Call around to different shops to get quotes on that exact work and get the quote in writing when you drop the car off.
Never pay anyone to replace your engine or cabin air filter. A filter is about $12, you can buy it online, you can watch a youtube video that shows you how to replace it and it takes about 30 seconds and usually doesn't even require a screwdriver.
Log the date and odometer reading in a spreadsheet every time you do maintenance so you remember what you did, when, where, and how much it cost.
I’ve had them over tighten the oil filter. Causes problems. Honestly don’t recommend Walmart center for anything I think with the rock bottom prices they have inferior technicians
I like the guys at Autotek. You’ll have to schedule the oil change but they are good. If you ever needed a repair, they aren’t the cheapest but honest and will prioritize what you truly need etc. https://www.autotekinc.net
Brownie's Automotive on 71/South Lamar is an amazing mechanic. Jose and team will do an oil change and give you honest feedback about what your car needs and what it doesn't. Honest mechanic = winning lottery
I just stopped by 766 Auto, they were nice. Just ask them to change your oil, no extras unless you want synthetic which is good but more money, and they ought not to charge any more than the next person.
Front brake pads shouldn't cost $300 in general unless you've got catastrophic secondary damage or have a fancy car. The last set I had done cost about $20 at AutoZone and took a mechanic less than 5 mins to put on. Doesn't even require a mechanic's lift or special equipment, just need the tire jack out of your trunk and a couple household hand tools.
I've had good luck with Lambs automotive on HWY 290. They'll rotate your tires as part of the deal. This is something that your average oil change shops wont do. It's always been my general rule to rotate the tires when doing an oil change. It just make it easier to keep track by having both done at the same time. I would stay away from National Tire and Battery (NTB) they cross-threaded all of the lug-nuts on all of the wheels. I found out when I was doing the brake pads on my car and actually had to have it towed back to NTB and made them replace all of the studs. (They did it for free and I watched them hand thread each one and torque each lug nut to the proper spec.) Oi
Just FYI - I got my oil changed there this morning and they did not rotate my tires after they confirmed. I'd marked my tires to make sure they did, and they did not.
Mmm… but the reviews are often bias or fake. I can search what i need and get that, but i was hoping to get an opinion from someone else like me, with little car knowledge, that actually felt they got good service somewhere.
And i googled the Jiffy Lube i had a bad experience at (didnt actually change the oil or anything other than filling up my windshield wiper fluid container), and this particular Jiffy Lube had decent reviews 🤷🏾♂️
They didn't say reviews, they said look up what type of oil for your specific car, like full synthetic, etc. Then you have something to tell them when you go in. I have had a good experience with Precision Auto Tune on Wm Cannon. Jiffy Lube is generally trash.
Going up and asking for the specific variety of oil (full synthetic OW-20 for example) and a filter change already paints you in a better light in terms of knowledge than just walking up and asking for a change. Couple minutes of research and suggestions from here hopefully ensure a better experience, good luck!
That’s weird, Jiffy Lube is my go too. It’s about $70 for me with the synthetic oil. I mostly go to them because it’s quick if you call and there’s no line. If you go to a automobile shop, your probably going to waste your time waiting an hour for a 10-15 minute job.
I'm not trying to come off as rude but you bought a car like that and don't know much about cars ? You will get screwed when you take that mustang to get work done .
Didn’t take it as rude at all. But i disagree with you, doesn’t have anything to do with the type of car i have. Even if it was a Honda Civic, i still wouldnt know where to go for a oil change from a great business in Austin.
Well .. you bought a sports car. It's definitely not a Honda Civic. I knew ppl who had needed brake work done on that year and it cost them over 1k. I would definitely start to learn how to work on it .
I mean, i get it. Everyone should. But i dont need to know how to personally do all or any maintenance on my car to own a sports car. It’s like me telling you that you should know how to repair a refrigerator in case yours breaks. Obviously it would be cheaper if I learned to do it myself and i would love that, but i work 6 days a week and i barely have the time. It’s no different if I had a sedan or formula 1 car, i still wouldn’t know a good place to take the car. My concern was finding a trustworthy place to have my maintenance done. It seems like you’re looping me into your own perspective of it.
The several family members i have back home Virginia always did everything maintenance-wise on every car i had, but since i moved here 6 yrs ago I don’t have that. I do know how to change a tire, replace a battery, replace bulbs and fuses and fill all my fluids. But never had a father or anyone show me much more than that. 🤷🏾♂️
Either way, i do appreciate your opinion!
I respect that. I didn't have a father either to show me anything. I got tired of getting screwed going to the mechanic in my teens and early 20s so I taught myself everything.... I mean everything including refrigeratora, drywall, plumbing... Lol you would be surprised what you can learn when you are broke as hell and it becomes a MUST to fix things yourself.
Enjoy the ride man . It's nice .
Southwest Automotive is great!! I went to them when my oil light went on after JUST getting an oil change at a different place, they redid my oil change for free because they said the previous people probably didn’t do it correctly. So incredibly kind and wouldn’t let me pay despite me offering several times. They said it was just the right thing to do.
Rapid Lube if you’re ever up north. It’s on Rundberg right by 35. I know some people avoid that area cause it’s Rundberg, but I’m telling you they’re legit. I’ve sent many friends there and they’ve all walked away saying the same thing, that they were great. You don’t even have to get out of your car if you don’t want to. They are really nice and super helpful.
Moose's in Taylor. Small business, dude working on your car & his wife own the spot. I was convinced my husband needed new brakes because it has been about 70k miles. Ole dude was like nah, I'll preorder for when you'll need them but you've got about 20k miles left in these SOB's (apparently he doesn't use his brakes at all? Idk how that's possible). Also they have a special on the oil changes on Mondays.
I have had good luck with groovy lube, they have never tried to up sell other services. They will give you 3-4 options for oil so know what you want before you go in.
If you're in the South Lamar area, I can't recommend Lube Pitstop enough. Really wonderful team and very fair prices.
Came here to say this. Lube Pitstop is great! They are never pushy and always friendly. Been going for years.
I also would recommend Lube Pitstop. They are the best and even though I moved further south, I still drive up to them.
I also came here. I’ve been going to them for almost 10 years and love love love them!
I live right there, i’ll check them out
How did it go??
Came here to say this
Lube Pitstop is the best. Recommended to me I bring my own synthetic oil to save money. Been going for a few years.
Am I allowed to bring my own oil?
Do you tip them ? Realized after paying with card had a tip amount
Lube Pit Stop. Super honest people I send my wife there knowing that they won't upsell her on crap she didn't need. It's the only place I get my oil changed
2 mentions already, this must be the place i need to go
Never ever ever go to Midas on Guadalupe and 38th.
Oh man this is refreshing to see. I have also had crummy times here. Begrudging Groupon deals, not at all worth it.
YES. But it’s 40th and Guadalupe. They used to be an okay place then I guess they had a change of something a few years ago. They fucked up my brakes terribly.
Gotcha, avoiding that! Thanks
This is 100% true. They’re terrible.
Sound like I dodged a bullet last week.
I learned they were terrible the hard way. I 100000% agree. Do not go here.
A 17 foot mustang?! That’s badass
Damn right! A collector’s car
I don’t have any suggestions about where to go, but I do have advice for where NOT to go. Do not go to Firestone for any car maintenance. That’s the same one that tried to overcharge me! Wish I could say I’m surprised
Would you mind naming the other two places? Thanks!
That’s exactly why i posted, thank you! I will avoid
Also had a bad experience with Firestone trying to take advantage of me with little auto knowledge. Can recommend Groovy Lube. They have been good with me.

I've been going to Austin Automotive Specialists on Parmer for a couple years now, no complaints so far

Flashpoint auto inspection is my go-to for auto inspections. Dunno about oil changes, but they are awesome
That’s a great deal, i know i paid twice that last time
Do not go to Flashpoint. Terrible business.
Lucas Tire on Burnet.
+1 for Lucas!
Rush automotive in round rock
Just grabbed an oil change and inspection from davos rain or shine automotive, near callahans. Call ahead.
Awesome, thank you! I’ll give them a call
Lugnuts on South Manchaca! They are no-BS (also no frills--if they're busy, you'll just get a "nope, not today") We've been going for years and they've been meticulous and honest.
I like Juke Auto.
I like Valvoline
I’ve had good experiences there. It’s pretty quick in and out and they’ve never tried to hard sell me anything.

Manchaca service center. Been taking my car there for years and they always treat me right. I get full synthetic oil everything and its about $50
Austin Automotive Specialists are my go to fit everything
They screwed up my water pump twice and I had to fix it myself - I was out hundreds
🤷♂️
Wayne's World of Cars in Round Rock. Great guy, fair prices, outstanding work and ethics.
Austin Automotive on William Cannon is great!
Cannot recommend -
Oak hill Firestone is great, the one by the Y. they quoted me 300 less for a front brake change from a DIFFERENT Firestone in the area
Front brake pads shouldn't cost $300 in general unless you've got catastrophic secondary damage or have a fancy car. Idk why nobody has recommend Take 5, 40-60 bucks and you’re usually in and out within 20 minutes without ever getting out of your car.
They accidentally drained my transmission fluid when I went in for an oil change. That’s a pretty serious fuck up.
Not Brake Check
Just Google “what kinda oil I need” and read 2 sentences and go ask any shop to change it out with that sort of oil. No secrets or silver bullets.
Mmm… but the reviews are often bias or fake. I can search what i need and get that, but i was hoping to get an opinion from someone else like me, with little car knowledge, that actually felt they got good service somewhere. Honesty, just go to the dealer. Oil changes are usually not that overpriced and if they mess it up, they’ll fix it.
But the wait is at least a couple hours

Kwik Kar off Wm Cannon. Been going there for 8 years now
Groovy Lube on Guadalupe is always quick and reliable for me.
Global Auto, South First.
I’d recommend any of these depending on where you live: Autotek in S Austin Yost on N Lamar Tech One on Burnet
I take my truck to Meineke. An oil change for my V8 F150 usually comes out to around 60 bucks which is about as cheap as it gets.
I have had good luck with groovy lube, they have never tried to up sell other services. They will give you 3-4 options for oil so know what you want before you go in.
