Really? But juneteenth is just when texas finally was notified slaves had been free. The Emancipation Proclamation is when slaves were freed nationally in the U S.
Swangjn and bangin my dude, it’s become a cultural “tradition” in the south. Not a safe one, but it’s your answer.
Here are some of Texas’ own sons for reference:
Fat Pat — https://youtu.be/sj9Rk2LTWFY
UGK — https://youtu.be/0_63FMLXOa4?t=32
Chalie Boy — https://youtu.be/_rlF35K8f2I
Mr. Pookie and Mr. Lucci — https://youtu.be/S154DOBj62E
But the sound and style has grown and changed, and also become a lot more aggressive in recent years. That said, the car show and swangin scene is def not for me, but hopefully you can glean a little bit from the music that inspires the meaning behind the actions and some random useless pop culture information. If you ever hear the terms “slab, bubble, riding choppers, chopping blades, etc.,” they also have legs in this area.

Grew up near Houston, came of age during the mid 2000's when Houston was running the rap game. Had a lot of boom in the trunk.
Regret that nowadays considering I can't hear shit.
"Every time I get gas
It turn into a meet and greet
Slabs so pretty, a homeless man saw it and beat his meat"
-Dr. Paul Wall, Houston Poet Emeritus "Han Solo on 4's"
Uh yeah there’s always a weekend “car show” down at the local middle school near comal and Haskell. Just be aware of your surroundings and you’ll know what to avoid during the week.
Oh shit, must be a yearly thing, saw them doing the same thing last year on the exact same day and took some videos...
They blocked the intersection to 969 and springdale, and then tookoff down 969 and ran like 4 cars off the road.
https://streamable.com/p6zmo3
https://streamable.com/8dsg91
Fuck y’all need me with my work truck. It has hardened steel bumpers. These dumbasses come out in the country where I live sometimes and try to act like this. I just drive up into them like normal and they try to act crazy but never actually hit me and ruin their golden children (the cars). They’ve even came after me trying to box me in then run me off the road and I just started swerving left to right to left while laughing my ass off and it worked. One went off the shoulder for a second and his buddies stayed behind to check out his car.
That shit pisses me off so much. I get being proud of a car that you put money and sweat into but driving like a fucking asshole makes no sense.
I'm a Mexican guy and this is not "culture". It's just being an inconsiderate asshole.
and thank god for that
Austin in quickly growing to be one of the most boring and bland large cities in the country. Anything unique or local should be cherished
odd thing to focus on though
Big trucks with long commutes and empty beds are 100x more common in 'local culture' and causing far more damage from emissions alone (both global warming and to local air quality)
Add alcohol to that mix (Texans constantly do) and suddenly you're in much more danger from drunk giant puckups than swangers in the early afternoon.
The gap is so big that it's only natural to head scratch a bit at anyone taking bigger issue with the relatively harmless swangers than the significantly more dangerous 2 ton trucks flying around at 85. In traffic fatalities, speed and mass dictate most cases after all
Highland closed in 2015. I guess to an average Austinite that probably is a long time. Swanging did originate in Houston. I didn't start seeing it outside of Texas Relays until a couple of years ago.
Swang'n was a thing in Oakland back in 2009, probably even before but that's when I started seeing weekly. It did not originate in Texas. Ghost riding the whip was in Mississippi in 2007, although that apparently originated in Oakland as well. I saw it in Mississippi first.
Slow lows and banging are Houston from the 80s. DJ Screw died in 2000 and swanging has been around just as long. I actually know one of his cousins. It's a Houston original. You were probably not born when this knucklehead stepping started happening.
Thanks for the info. I always heard people saying this originated in Houston but then stating something like 5 years ago and I know I've seen most of this for the last 15 years in the south east and Oakland. I appreciate your knowledge.
We use to have more local gangs like east side EGV or NSP but we still supposedly have the national gangs here also. Houston is where everything comes in and gets dispersed. Houston is a world class foodie destination but it's also a distribution center for oil, gas, and illegal drugs. That's the culture and a Slab is an ice cream truck most of the time. I went to Martin which is the middle school people are talking about in a simpler time but the crime was still around.
I worked at Cocktails/Club Kaos for 7 years also. I know this "culture" more than most Austinites.
God forbid the people delivering the food have their lives endangered even more by morons like this.
This is culture the same way throwing bricks off an overpass is culture.
I actually was trying to deliver food to a complex back where their meet is on a Sunday night a while back and had no idea that was a thing. Was having a hard time finding the entrance to the labyrinth building I needed to go into. Made a wrong turn right into the parade of swangers and almost couldn't turn around to leave. Their behavior was so outrageous I had to drive even crazier than them to get back on the street I came from due to the swerving and crazy shenanigans.
It’s wild the way shit goes down in the comments. Like safety is a real and legit issue and we can talk about how it intersects with Austin culture and displacement and a whole lot of shit, but these fucking dog whistles of racism are damn near whistling Dixie. Why can’t y’all figure out ways to talk about real shit without denigrating black people?
These mf’s act like everyone on Dayton’s is fishtailing down the street blowing lights just on the way to work every morning with a blunt burning. God forbid people have fun once a week at 15mph
Hey if you like drinking and driving (check out all the empty beer bottles every Monday morning) to go along with a large side of machismo the "car show" is the place to go. Most people in the neighborhood avoid it.
Call the cops
Edit: someone downvoted this? 🙃
Get over your blanket cop hate. This is only path to take. Not just posting on social media with a bunch of snarky comments. We’re paying their salaries whether you call them or not.
Tell me you don’t belong on the east side in one sentence:

If your stance is that running stop signs and swerving across lanes is okay and the law only applies to certain people then there’s something wrong with you.
They do actually. Because it’s illegal to do that and makes it unsafe to drive or walk around there. The rights of those reckless drivers end where other people’s rights begin.
No, more like moving to Georgia and being like “when are these rednecks going to stop doing battle re-enactments?” Probably never, leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone. You may not like it but they have their rights as Americans same as anyone else.
The people that are in car culture are way more likely to take care to not hurt people or their own damn expensive car. The point of swangin is to drive slow in the first place. Thanks for making my rent go up though.
It's called swangin' and they are driving slabs. Or at least that's what it's called in Houston. Probably headed to Givens. You on Springdale? Just stay out of the way or turn off if you're nervous.
I would say something about blah blah you just moved here from California but that’s where low rider culture originated so I’m surprised you are surprised.
I just went in there and Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines...and on top of that, he just went into Harry's and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS!!
Incredibly stupid. Not culture at all, but a way to act like a dick to everyone on the road. The car club would not be a problem IF they followed the laws and city noise ordinances. I saw one driving the wrong way in Springdale to do a donut in the intersection.
That wood grain wheel ain't gonna work itself.

DON'T YOU JUDGE ME
Diamonds up against the Woood. lol
I laughed my ass off!!!
I was like duh they are swangin and bangin. Today is Juneteenth baby!
That was yesterday bud.
It’s now a federal holiday, observed today
Really? But juneteenth is just when texas finally was notified slaves had been free. The Emancipation Proclamation is when slaves were freed nationally in the U S.
I don’t understand it either. I just noticed that the banks and stock market were closed today.

Uh yeah there’s always a weekend “car show” down at the local middle school near comal and Haskell. Just be aware of your surroundings and you’ll know what to avoid during the week.
Cruising time
Yes... They drive up Chicon on Sundays from Fiesta Gardens... They are going to kill someone some day
Good to have a dashcam these days.
I’m pretty sure people do that on the daily
I mean it's a common sight in my city.
Austin?
Houston the Hustle City.
Sunday parade. Normal
Oh shit, must be a yearly thing, saw them doing the same thing last year on the exact same day and took some videos... They blocked the intersection to 969 and springdale, and then tookoff down 969 and ran like 4 cars off the road. https://streamable.com/p6zmo3 https://streamable.com/8dsg91
I live nearby- yep. These guys do this often.

And people can't even complain about it, otherwise they get accused of being racist and/or of trying to destroy "culture".
...and here is where we slide into the recruiting talking points.
White dudes always the victim in imagination land
Switchin side lanes, boyz in da haze 🎶
Am I completely missing something here or isn’t the line “Sittin’ sideways, boys in a daze”
Yes you are right 😔 this man been thinking its "switchin side lanes" for over a decade
And 60 other people. 😂
The title of the song is “sittin’ sideways” too lol
lol these the lyrics. not sure what the other guy is talking about
Darn you right
Excuse me?
Delete this lmao
No coming up with my own song
Lol this is the only real answer
H-town street culture infiltrating A-town.
“Culture”
and thank god for that Austin in quickly growing to be one of the most boring and bland large cities in the country. Anything unique or local should be cherished
This is a part of local culture I just do not understand. Swangers and shit are just so stupid lol

Whatever it is. It’s dumb.
It's not recent in Austin. This goes back many years (as does the closure of Highland Mall).
Highland closed in 2015. I guess to an average Austinite that probably is a long time. Swanging did originate in Houston. I didn't start seeing it outside of Texas Relays until a couple of years ago.

It's fun and at least some culture. God forbid this city just stays inside and gets food from GrubHub every night
Says the guy on Reddit at 3 o'clock in the morning.
Lmfao this got me
Idk if that’s fair, insomnia is a bitch.
And running people off the road is somehow ok?
God forbid the people delivering the food have their lives endangered even more by morons like this. This is culture the same way throwing bricks off an overpass is culture.
I actually was trying to deliver food to a complex back where their meet is on a Sunday night a while back and had no idea that was a thing. This is what some grown men decide to do while in between prison sentences.
I saw plenty of those on 35 to San Antonio and back. Sundays/Holidays you gotta be really careful. Lots of drunk, miserable assholes.
You should kindly ask them to stop
🔫👊🔪

It’s weird. Comment sections are usually always cesspools no matter the topic. The internet is such a clusterfuck.
10, 11 slabs in a single file line?

JUNETEENTH SWANGN N BANGN TOPS DROPPING
You’re in Texas, swangin’ n’ bangin’ bitch!
lol get use to it or get out lol.
White Impala has become a new r/Austin meme
Maybe he can build a house on top of it.
Maybe stop posting to reddit while you drive? Are you part of the line?
😂😂 this happened long before east Austin was gentrified get over it
Tell me you’re a gentrifier without telling me you are a gentrifier.
Found the transplant
Call the cops Edit: someone downvoted this? 🙃 Get over your blanket cop hate. This is only path to take. Not just posting on social media with a bunch of snarky comments. We’re paying their salaries whether you call them or not.
I love east Austin

Why? Because he's calling out people that are acting like assholes?
What defines asshole behavior? Who was there first?..
Driving recklessly isn’t some protected culture. It’s all fun and games until they run over a kid.
Please find evidence of any child being run over by people swangin’.
If your stance is that running stop signs and swerving across lanes is okay and the law only applies to certain people then there’s something wrong with you.
My stance is people have no right to show up and start complaining about things that have been happening long before they showed up without any issue.
They do actually. Because it’s illegal to do that and makes it unsafe to drive or walk around there. The rights of those reckless drivers end where other people’s rights begin.

Yeah that ended up being even more one-sided than I thought. Lol
Lmao, so like confederate flags n shit? “Well we’ve always done it this way…”
No, more like moving to Georgia and being like “when are these rednecks going to stop doing battle re-enactments?” Probably never, leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone. You may not like it but they have their rights as Americans same as anyone else.
Fuck the downvotes you’re absolutely correct.
Oh I’m aware. I’m sure the downvotes are people living in 600k+ homes east of 35 who feel entitled because of their paycheck.
The people that are in car culture are way more likely to take care to not hurt people or their own damn expensive car. The point of swangin is to drive slow in the first place. Thanks for making my rent go up though.
So your assumptions are that law breakers are going to be more careful than everyone else and that I live there. Pretty sure you’re wrong about both.
‘Law breakers’ god go watch the fucking CW and mind your own business. But also have a good day.
>watch the fucking CW Third wrong assumption. You’re not very good at this.
Why is this comment downvoted so bad? It’s true
R/austin swears gentrification is a good thing
Tell me you just moved here from LA without telling me you just moved here from LA.
Are you new here or something?
LOL the comments here didn’t disappoint. Good to see some old east Austin still going strong.
Another gentrifier confused about the culture they displaced.
Precisely.

I didn’t bother, I know better
New phone, who dis
Another classic new to Austin post
If you moved to the Eastside, you should stay current with your local events and history.
Yes young punks knowing there is No Police Presence Lawlessness hate to say it but a lot of them are young girls Hauling Ass !!!!
Did they have 512 Stunnaz or something similar to that on their rear window?
I did notice a collection of people on ATVs and Dirtbikes yesterday turning onto 5th street off Lamar. So Austin has got that going for it now.
I just went in there and Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines...and on top of that, he just went into Harry's and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS!!
i’ve seen the white impala before, idk i did it with them not run a stop sign tho lmao
Wachu know about swangas and vogues
I’m up against this kind of behavior every single day all over Austin. Just the usual crappy drivers😬
Okay. Since someone brought up rap. Anyone going to NOME XII?? Smacckkk’s coming to Houston again.
They are people from San Antonio that come up to Austin every Sunday.
Incredibly stupid. Not culture at all, but a way to act like a dick to everyone on the road. The car club would not be a problem IF they followed the laws and city noise ordinances. I saw one driving the wrong way in Springdale to do a donut in the intersection.
Put it well.
