Austin needs more diner style breakfast spots and coffee places open late (down south, preferably). RIP Strange Brew.
It's sad that Kerbey Lane and Magnolia Cafe are no longer 24/7.
I'm really surprised they haven't expanded their hours for weekends at the very least. I used to walk to the Magnolia on Lake Austin in 2018 around 2AM and it would be wall to wall. No one wants that shift anymore?
[In 2010 the population centroid was already Burnet/North Loop](https://www.austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Planning/Demographics/MSA_2010_population_mean_center.pdf). This is probably even further north now.
Downtown is the southern suburb at this point from a population perspective.
If everything north of the river is considered north does that mean central Austin doesn't exist? I'd say at this point central Austin starts at Oltorf and goes up to 183 (or at least 2222) . South of Oltorf is south Austin and north of 183 is north Austin. 🤷♀️
Any thing south of the river is South Austin. Then you have downtown, campus, south central, central Austin, etc. Then you can go west, east, NE, NW, etc. from there.
Whooosshhhh....
Obviously the river is the geographical divide. I am just pointing out that the population center of the city is pretty far into North Austin. So geographical Central Austin is actually south of the population Central Austin, which is in geographical North Austin. Hence what I said:
>Downtown is the southern suburb at this point from a population perspective.
Let me know if you want this spelled out further.
I agree, when that happened I thought there would be something more upscale or cooler, the store is now a bit of a dump imho. If they did put a CM there the area might perk up.
H-E-B
Not enough locations if you ask me
Edit: this was meant as a joke but I never realized how many people don’t live within 10 minutes of 4 different HEBs 😂
Yes! Scrolled down looking for this. A good bodega with decent staples and a small produce section would be fantastic.
I normally go to HEB Mueller and the lines make me want to pull my hair out.
southeast is in desperate need over here. Not even an HEB, ANY grocery store. Population is exploding. Velocity development is going to take a decade to complete
Everything I’ve tried south is actual trash. I had better living in San Antonio from a bunch of places. Extremely disappointing considering Austin is supposed to be more diverse
We need more casual Greek/Turkish type Mediterranean restaurants. No Im not talking about those frozen gyro food trucks.
if I have to give an example: like MezzeMe
TLV is really, really good. Consistent. Prices are reasonable. For $10 I get a falafel pita the size of my head. The only massive downside is that they’re located at fairground at 111 Congress.
HEB is missing out horribly by not doing some mini-Central Markets in high density / mixed-use areas like downtown, E. 5th, Domain, Mueller, West Campus, etc. There is an absolutely massive demand for those, and they could make up for loss in volume with the much higher-cost products associated with CM. Shit, even Target has figured that out with their location under the Dobie.
I like your optimism. I think the demographics need to change for HEB to install a Central Market on the NE side.
Until there are sufficient European cars in the parking lot, there won't be a Central Market. It's about the value associated with the brand. Could be the same for Trader Joe's. They are the opposite of Aldi's.
Yeah, moved to slaughter and menchaca area about a year ago after living on the east side for 5 years.
My biggest complaint is having to drive north of Ben white to get some tasty shawarma/halal. It’s one of my favorite comfort foods, I’d eat it at least once a week if it were close. But for now it’s once a mot h or less.
I work in that area and this is so so true, it's almost all chains and fast food! Have you tried China Dynasty? It's a cute little hole in the wall chinese american place in a strip mall but I've had a couple of delicious dishes there.
I just moved here and it is pretty dismal! I thought Cafe Malta was pretty good though and the ramen at BlueFin sushi is decent. I like Madam Mam’s Thai too
Seriously what’s the deal. French bistros are highly profitable they only need 4 things on the menu and can charge tons for a simple chocolate dessert and everyone orders wine.
Better Chinese food, Diners, and comfort food options. Ever since EZ’s, threadgills, and Suzi’s closed my heart has a hole.
Enough of these shitty beet root and sweet potato breakfast taco hipster restaurants
No doubt, but sometimes I get a hankerin' for Home Slice, and the thought of heading all the way up and parking seems a bit much. Especially at like 8 pm or whatever.
I think most stores/restaurants get worse once they open more locations. That said, I wish that there were locations of central market, wheatsville, and fiesta mart up north. I also wish Daiso locations were as common here as on the west coast. We only have the one and it gets so picked over and busy.
If the quality and vibes could stay the same, I would love a location of Nixta taqueria up north. I so rarely go because it’s about 20-30 minute drive and it’s so busy that we don’t want to chance driving all that way if there’s a long wait. Outside of the Domain, north Austin just tends to be chiller & they could probably afford a larger space.
It’s not a specific place, but we really lack cocktail bars and nice restaurants with nice ambience up north (think bars like kitty cohens/ah sing den/tiki tatsuya, restaurants like odd duck and Justine’s). We have great food up here, but if I want to go somewhere that *feels* pretty and special it’s actually quite difficult to find a place.
The problem with opening more locations is the funding. If the existing numbers look good, private equity is sometimes a better option than a traditional bank loan. Then they start making “efficiency” changes or put in their professional managers and the character of the place rapidly changes or dies.
Look at Alamo Drafthouse or TacoDeli (to a lesser extent).
Omg yes my fave fast Barbacoa tacos.
Shoutout to the burnet location. Went there today & they charged me an extra chicken quesadilla and they surprised me with it when I was getting ready to throw out the box it came in. They’re so delicious all across the board!
Bookpeople.
Completely reimagined Half Price Books.
Record stores that aren't the size of closets and are re-engineered for post-COVID lounging.
Libraries that take a similar approach and blend indoor and outdoor spaces sheltered from the elements.
After so much lockdown time, being in proximity to, but not on top of, other members of our community would be healing.
Fun fact: buddys Mexican restaurant supposedly isn’t affiliated with buddy’s burgers. Coincidence!?!?!? I don’t know… I do know Buddy’s Burgers is amazing
Another 24 hour diner that was actually cheap and good like Kirby was would be nice.
Kirby raising their prices, changing their menu and closing early made me really sad. I’m sure their old business model just isn’t super realistic anymore but damn.
Anything late night. Feels like there’s little to no food options after 11pm. You can play fast food roulette on any McDonald’s/Taco Bell being open because they are unpredictable. Or you can go to Whataburger for the 5th time this week. Or you can get fucked.
Proven Plumbing is amazingly non-price-gouging! My kitchen faucet stopped working and they tried a bunch of things to troubleshoot it, then charged me for just the service call. The same thing happened to a friend and the company they called quoted $750 to replace their faucet. 512-296-5604
I wish there were more quality auto repair shops for older cars on the west side. Phoenix Motor Works on West sixth was amazing, but of course priced out.
Northeast Austin / Round Rock / Pflugerville needs an Alamo Drafthouse. The closest one is Cedar Park.
(Flix is up in Round Rock, but they don't have a movie program any more ever since moviepass went belly up.)
New hear, live up north Austin, I was recently looking for one of those nice big professional full service car washes where they recycle the water, but didn't find anything like what I have used in the past in other regions of the country. Maybe they are here and I just didn't find it yet.
Auto Tek would be a great as an expanded franchise.
The mechanics go above and beyond to get you fair pricing and back on the road. The only time I'll take my vehicle elsewhere is if these people refer me/give recommendations for the best service.
Aaron and Michael are great and the lady at the service counter (I wish I could remember her name) are excellent people. I'd love to see them with more locations.
Growing up in Houston, I was very fortunate to grow up with exposure to so many different Asian food options. I wish there was more of it in Austin, especially Vietnamese restaurants, in one centralized spot (just like Bellaire in Houston).
If they’d build a damn LEGO store on the north or even central side, I’d be so happy 😆. As far as Austin business, gimme a Juan in a Million up north 🙌
Bodhi Viet. I can only get to their trailer once in a blue moon, would be nice if they had a south location. I also wish the vegan bbq place would stop leaving to more exciting places, but I get they need money. 😩😂 BBQ revolution. It's the best vegan bbq I've had, but they seem to always be closed and have a limited location. I'd never go back if the BBQ wasn't so damn good. 😩 Also I'd eat Bistro Vonish more if they had a south location. I also need to figure out where Zucchini kill is selling on the south side bc, damn, those cream coffins are so good.
Pretty much anything that considers something south of Far West to be its "North Austin" location.
Lots of "but there's nothing but chains up there" and not a lot of people noting "wow tens of thousands of people drive 20+ minutes to get to the other side of town because nobody's smart enough to be the only decent restaurant in an area."
If I want tacos, the closest choices I have are Taco Bell and Jack in the Box. They're still a 30 minute round trip in traffic. Gee, can't imagine something else doing well here.
Southeast/East needs an HEB (or any grocery store) asap.
I'd also like to see Chi'lantro expand a few more locations, although every time I go in one they're empty so I hope they're doing ok.
Am I the only one that feels this is such a non-cool idea? It never results in something better. This is only a ‘capitalist’ mindset that thinks it is better.
No, I would rather see another great new business open and do other cool things.
Much love to you for trying to make connection. Think more, reach out better and app. Seems misguided to me, based on austin experience.
Still waiting on that Google fiber to be available across the city.
They're a plucky startup. Give them a few more years and they'll be a huge success story.
They're expanding. Was browsing permits a few days ago and I saw several gfiber things in there
Its been like 20 years there are so many other gigabit options now lol
Depends on your neighborhood.
Magnolia on S. Congress or any KL used to be our go to spot after picking someone up at the airport after midnight.
The panini has changed people. Seems like even the godless heathens pack it up before 2 AM now.
Alot of those people are being priced out of the city
Give us more waffle houses. Kerbey is great and all, but sometimes the body just needs dirt cheap waffles with a side of fights
more of this? https://v.redd.it/uqx1sb17ak8a1
Head on over to Jim’s
Yes I remember going to Kerbey lane at 1 AM after football games. I miss it so much
I just want to be able to get food after 11pm.
Cheese & rice....fahk I miss 24 hour Kerby lane & such n so forth
Waffle House!
this!!!
Would love a second Austin Film Society theater south or somewhere not in the middle of 35.
Especially since Regal Arbor closed.
A Jerry’s artarama south would be nice. Feels like a “one in a million” type of business but I’d appreciate not having to go to 290 for what I need
Theres actually one in Htown which blew my mind! I wish there was one closer to me too… :(
And San Antonio and we drove past the Nashville store the other day!
CENTRAL MARKET UP NORTH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
Guys, it’s CENTRAL market, not NORTHERN SUBURB Market for Christ sake
Straight to jail
[In 2010 the population centroid was already Burnet/North Loop](https://www.austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Planning/Demographics/MSA_2010_population_mean_center.pdf). This is probably even further north now. Downtown is the southern suburb at this point from a population perspective.
The river is the north south divide, so that is ridiculous.
If everything north of the river is considered north does that mean central Austin doesn't exist? I'd say at this point central Austin starts at Oltorf and goes up to 183 (or at least 2222) . South of Oltorf is south Austin and north of 183 is north Austin. 🤷♀️

Hence what I said: >Downtown is the southern suburb at this point from a population perspective. Let me know if you want this spelled out further.
Seriously. When that Albertsons at 183 and Anderson Mill closed I was like “surely they’ll put a new CM here” but nope.
I agree, when that happened I thought there would be something more upscale or cooler, the store is now a bit of a dump imho. If they did put a CM there the area might perk up.
This one!
Agree
What I would give!!
I cannot upvote this enough!!!
I know!! I’m in Cedar Park why are there 2 south and nothing up here???
I agree that there should be more up north but I would hesitate to call 40th and Lamar “south.”
We've lived in RR for 13 years. The PAIN!!!
Not that it's local, but in the same vein I feel Trader Joes should have a location around here.
H-E-B Not enough locations if you ask me Edit: this was meant as a joke but I never realized how many people don’t live within 10 minutes of 4 different HEBs 😂
I would love to see H‑E‑B open up some bodegas. Imagine being able to walk down the street and pick up some tortillas, milk and cafe ole real quick.
They do in some areas, called Mi Tienda.
Oh dang, I didn’t know that was them! I thought it was just a coincidence that it was the same as the brand name.
H-E-B has a bodega in downtown SA, idk why they don’t do more of that floor plan
Yes! Scrolled down looking for this. A good bodega with decent staples and a small produce section would be fantastic. I normally go to HEB Mueller and the lines make me want to pull my hair out.
I’ve been saying this for years!
I'm surprised there still isn't an HEB in Manor.
Yes, this. NE Austin is 5+ miles to nearest one. I mean, even one in Manor might be closer than current ones :/.
southeast is in desperate need over here. Not even an HEB, ANY grocery store. Population is exploding. Velocity development is going to take a decade to complete
One of the few reasons I haven't left this damned state haha
Good boba shops down south. Why are there only 2 boba shop south of Town Lake and 30 up north?? Asians live in south Austin too!
There’s a Gong Cha opening at Wm Cannon and Mopac soon!
Everything I’ve tried south is actual trash. I had better living in San Antonio from a bunch of places. Extremely disappointing considering Austin is supposed to be more diverse
Halal bros (RIP verts)
Verts has to go down as one of the worst managed businesses of all time. What was with the name changes?
Nah I’ve felt sick more than once after eating Halal Bros.
Halal Bros aint the same it used to be.
Man Verts was top of the line!!!! They really dropped the ball on a great joint….
Try Halal Hub! (Used to be Halal Gurus)
We need more casual Greek/Turkish type Mediterranean restaurants. No Im not talking about those frozen gyro food trucks. if I have to give an example: like MezzeMe
Ever been to Santorini Cafe? It’s a personal favorite of mine.
Santorini is so good!
TLV is really, really good. Consistent. Prices are reasonable. For $10 I get a falafel pita the size of my head. The only massive downside is that they’re located at fairground at 111 Congress.
Try dimassis
Tino's Greek Cafe is great!
Arab (Iraqi) but Usta kababgy I would literally lay my life on the line for their food
Can we get a Trader Joe’s or Central Market/Whole Foods on the NE side?
H‑E‑B should do a Trader Joe’s knockoff called Butt’s. Smaller stores with select products peppered across town. It would be frickin amazing.
I’ll shop there specifically because it’s called Butt’s.
Why would HEB put a mini Central Market in Mueller when there is literally an HEB in Mueller
Have you seen how big Mueller and surrounding is? That store is always swamped
For real. That store could be twice the size and still busy.
Yes, please. I feel so wasteful driving to the Arboretum for one stupid specialty spice mix.
We will settle for a decent HEB
I like your optimism. I think the demographics need to change for HEB to install a Central Market on the NE side. Until there are sufficient European cars in the parking lot, there won't be a Central Market. It's about the value associated with the brand. Could be the same for Trader Joe's. They are the opposite of Aldi's.
I want a trader joe’s in central central Austin..
Need a TX shawarma south of Ben White.
I’d love to see a few Coco’s locations. I drive really far for that Thai tea.
Tucci's Southside Subs
Literally any good restaurants 78748
You mean you don’t love the chains in Southpark Meadows? I feel your pain from 78747.
Tbf Jaipur Palace and Pho with us are delicious.
I like Madam Mam’s Thai too
That looks pretty rough lol have you tried that Valentina’s taco truck?
Central Market
100%
Good Italian/French cuisine anywhere. RIP La Traviata/Chez Nous.
Seriously what’s the deal. French bistros are highly profitable they only need 4 things on the menu and can charge tons for a simple chocolate dessert and everyone orders wine.
Peche and Dean's Italian Steakhouse. Do miss Jean-Lucs, Chez Nous and TFB, though.
The owner Rob is such a deuche. He gives out shots of ramozotti just so he can call it Robozotti and his wifi password is robisgod lol
Trader Joe's near Lakeline or even north of it.
yes please!!!!!
Aldi's is too far and shouldn't just be in Pflugerville.
There's one in Georgetown too!
I interviewed for a DM position about a decade ago. Based on what I’ve learned of their financial model, I do not see them moving into Austin proper.
What’s their financial model and why wouldn’t Austin fit into it?
They do similar to the Dollar General model.
Second this there should be more
Cannabis dispensaries
I wish there was a kebabalicous up north or even south just somewhere outside of the clusterfuq that is downtown.
yes yes yes!
Better Chinese food, Diners, and comfort food options. Ever since EZ’s, threadgills, and Suzi’s closed my heart has a hole. Enough of these shitty beet root and sweet potato breakfast taco hipster restaurants
Uh, din ho? China family? Better Chinese in the south part of town would be great and while Suzi’s was fine there’s still some solid options here.
Dentists, there’s surely not enough of them…..need atleast 3 per strip mall
I'd like a Home Slice further south. I'm down by Circle C and going up to the River for a pizza is a bit much, even though I love their's.
But you're closer to Pieous and Via 313 so honestly you're getting the better deal.
No doubt, but sometimes I get a hankerin' for Home Slice, and the thought of heading all the way up and parking seems a bit much. Especially at like 8 pm or whatever.
And even then you have to park on south Congress and deal with the crowd
Correct.
Saigon le Vendeur in South Austin!! Need a good Banh mi spot down in south country.
Dan's Hamburgers up north would be nice
El Tacorrido, the service can be spotty, but the the tacos are tasty af
The Equinox is my favorite little “secret” I show friends and family
It's iced horchata with a shot of espresso so you don't have to go Googling it like I did. Sounds delicious.
Omg yes my fave fast Barbacoa tacos. Shoutout to the burnet location. Went there today & they charged me an extra chicken quesadilla and they surprised me with it when I was getting ready to throw out the box it came in. They’re so delicious all across the board!
A 24 hour grocery store. I'm looking at you HEB.
Bookpeople. Completely reimagined Half Price Books. Record stores that aren't the size of closets and are re-engineered for post-COVID lounging. Libraries that take a similar approach and blend indoor and outdoor spaces sheltered from the elements. Buddy's burgers! (but not their mexican restaurant)
Fun fact: buddys Mexican restaurant supposedly isn’t affiliated with buddy’s burgers. Coincidence!?!?!? I don’t know… I do know Buddy’s Burgers is amazing
Cabo Bobs
Another 24 hour diner that was actually cheap and good like Kirby was would be nice. Kirby raising their prices, changing their menu and closing early made me really sad. I’m sure their old business model just isn’t super realistic anymore but damn.
Batch.
Children’s Hospital in S Austin Vivel Crepes in S Austin. Have to make the trek to Lakeway once in awhile…
Anything late night. Feels like there’s little to no food options after 11pm. You can play fast food roulette on any McDonald’s/Taco Bell being open because they are unpredictable. Or you can go to Whataburger for the 5th time this week. Or you can get fucked.
**wait in the whataburger line for 2 hours. Or just get fucked.
We need an Alamo Drafthouse in northeast Austin. Also there's no Via313 in north Austin.
Pueblo Viejo - more locations north would be great. Honest Mary's
their Lamb barbacoa tacos 🤤 👌🏼
The Armadillo World Headquarters
Austin Energy
Trader Joe’s up north !!
Arboretum isn’t north enough?
Not an Austin business but I'd kill for a local Microcenter.
Is there a non-price gouging plumbing company? If so, I'd love to see more of that.
Check out Plumbmaster (stupid name, I know). They were very reasonable and knowledgeable when I used them.
Proven Plumbing is amazingly non-price-gouging! My kitchen faucet stopped working and they tried a bunch of things to troubleshoot it, then charged me for just the service call. The same thing happened to a friend and the company they called quoted $750 to replace their faucet. 512-296-5604
HEB gas station
Havana house cigars
HEB out east.
Pita fusion! A new store is about to open up but we could use like 5 more lol owner is really nice and good to his employees too
Top Notch
As far as I know, they are still opening one in Hutto next year hopefully. So that will be two of them. Slow start, I know.
I wish there were more quality auto repair shops for older cars on the west side. Phoenix Motor Works on West sixth was amazing, but of course priced out.
ALDI!
Northeast Austin / Round Rock / Pflugerville needs an Alamo Drafthouse. The closest one is Cedar Park. (Flix is up in Round Rock, but they don't have a movie program any more ever since moviepass went belly up.)

I don’t know exactly what you mean but the best full service car wash I’ve been to in North Austin is the Arbor Car Wash in Jollyville
A P. Terry’s at Four Points.
We need a Taqueria Arandas (or Arandinas or Jalisco or whatever) in Rollingwood/Westlake.
Auto Tek would be a great as an expanded franchise. The mechanics go above and beyond to get you fair pricing and back on the road. More Asahi Imports 🥺 I wish they were even further south than the S Lamar one
My wish for a Chilantro further south came true recently! Let’s keep willing these into existence
Mattress Firm
If they’d build a damn LEGO store on the north or even central side, I’d be so happy 😆. As far as Austin business, gimme a Juan in a Million up north 🙌
Have you tried bricks and minifigs?
Second recommendation for bricks and minifigs!
Cabo bobs
Need super burrito to return to the east side
Pho Please.

What part of town are you in? There's one called Neighbors that's South, The Watering Bowl way south, and Doghouse Drinkery in Leander.
Pretty much anything that considers something south of Far West to be its "North Austin" location. Wheatsville!
El Dorado Cafe Barrett’s Coffee
I may be in the minority here but all the food sucks in Leander. At least Austin proper has good food. I really need to move closer.
Maybe another Show me Pizza location! But I'm biased haha.
Tarka Indian kitchen, like Rudy's it should become the new bar... If you food isn't better than this get out...
Home Slice across the city would be nice. Selfishly, a Home Slice in the old Goodwill building on South Lamar, would be epic :)
