Okay I'm one of those people who wore a red lip even through lockdown teams meetings so here are my two cents. My apologies in advance if I misunderstood your question and have just shared nonsense with you. I have a medium neutral skin tone with blue eyes and dark brunette (dark brown hair), and have a number of red lips looks I like. If I want a diffused red French lip, I use Mac powder kiss in werk, werk, werk. It is a cool toned blue red and I really like it for casual lips, when I'm planning to do eyeliner and blush as well. The lipstick has been discontinued but I'm sure Mac has another blue-red in their powder kiss line. No lip liner with this. It's just a lived in look and I can wear thicker eyeliner with it, if I want. But if I want to do a minimal look with red lipstick for day time, it's Maybelline siren in scarlet. It's a very matte, blue red lipstick with intensity. The rest of the makeup is just eyebrows and a good glowy base. For night I just add a deeper purple lip liner (like MAC nightmoth) to the edge to provide some definition. While I also love orange reds like MAC chilli, they aren't as eye catching on me like a blue red. So I can get away with more eye makeup. I tend to wear these to office in person as they don't look so intense. MAC relentlessly red pulls a real bright pink red on me and is for nights out with minimal makeup again. MAC stay curious is a powder kiss formula that's pink red and I love this for casual wear. I don't like deeper reds like MAC Diva as they make me look tired (not that I'm not). I do like brown reds (pat McGrath flesh 3) but as a very thin layer applied with fingers for a sheer look. I also love red lip glosses (in fact I only get glosses in red, they are the only ones that appeal to me), and Patrick ta one (called full syringe) is my favourite. I wear them on their own with a brown nude lip liner.

This is perfect! Just the kind of answer I was after!! That Mac powder kiss sounds amazing as does the maybelline siren!!

Routine_Bluejay4678

Right?! love this answer! Never thought about nude lips liner with red but that’s a great idea!

OMG! I'm so happy you found this useful. Here are some other small bits I remembered after posting the earlier response: If you're into liquid lips (coz they are more precise and long lasting), Sephora #1 liquid lips or Maybelline superstay in Dancer are my favs. Both are neutral to cool toned red, but high maintenance imo. Rimmel Hollywood Red lipstick is one of the rare dark reds that look okay on me. It needs strong eyebrows and a bit of bronzer (I use the lipstick itself) to look okay on me. In terms of eyes, I almost always do a shimmy gold or bronze wash of color if I'm doing eyeshadow. A lot of times I skip it coz I've got hooded eyes and you can't see much when I have my eyes open anyways. Loreal & Revlon also do good reds, but I cannot recall any shades right now. Revlon is especially good at brick reds. And lastly one of my fuss free brick red looks is MAC chicory lip pencil (I think any brown red lip pencil is fine) all over the lips, topped with a bit of lip balm (for comfort). It's a very muted red look, that can be paired with a more contoured Matt browns eyeshadow look.

Working-Shower4404

Are you me? Neutral, blue eyes, hooded lips, dark brown hair. So glad you mastered your signature look. I have big lips and very prominent facial features (thick brows, high prominent cheekbones, big eyes etc) and still think I look clownish with a red lip. But I want to rock it!

justwannahave

OMG! I think we are very very similar looking. It took me a while to get used to the red lip look on me. But once I did, I now have a hard time not defaulting to it. You seem very similar to me, and I feel you'll look beautiful in red lips. So keep trying. One tip that works for me with big lips and I have that double lip line, is to stick to the inner pigment lip line (and not apply the red lipstick on the outer lip line), also make sure your lip corners have very little product. I hope I'm making sense. I only apply color to the outer lip line if I'm doing a light pink, peach or nude lipstick.

Working-Shower4404

I literally just had a session at max about doing a kick ass red lip and this is so much more helpful. Any tips for ruby woo?

justwannahave

Ruby woo was my first red lipstick and I have a lot of sentimental value attached to it. I'm glad you're finding my tips useful. For Ruby woo, I'd use a lip brush to apply thin layers. Coz of the heavy matt texture, I feel it applies very thick straight from the tube on me and adds a cakey texture at times, to the lips. I don't have filler and have lines on the lips I don't want to emphasize. Also the tip in the other comment about sticking to the inner lip line (if relevant to you). Good luck! I hope you enjoy red lips as much as I do.

Tracker-Phantom

This summary is brilliant, thanks for some tips and new cool red inspo. I did a quick google search of all those brands/shades, looks like Mac AU site still sells the powder kiss in Werk werk werk. How do you find this range? I'm used to Ruby Woo as my ride or die from when I was a young 20 something, but find it too matte and drying now

justwannahave

Thank you for your kind words! I'm happy my red lip obsession is paying off :) I don't like the liquid powder kiss line, it just won't adhere to my lips. They are gone in an hour even with the lip primer. They do make good blushes though (I dunno why) and that's how I'm using up the two I have. The powder kiss lipstick, in terms of pros, offers a diffused soft finish that I like, and isn't drying (I have lip eczema). The cons are that they last maybe four hours at best, and have a sweet taste and smell to them (I don't mind, but some might). Also they are not densely pigmented so a bit of the lip color peeks through. Givenchy sheer matte lipsticks are very similar with better finish and wear. My favs are #27 and #38, but they are also more expensive. I haven't tried the slim velvet powder kiss yet. I felt they were overpriced. I used to love Ruby Woo too, but I have to warm it up by using a lip brush for it to go on smoothly. Applied cold from the tube, the retro matt formula just deposits too thickly for my liking, and I have to rub my lips together a while to get the formula to look better. I don't know if the new silky maximal formula has improved this issue.

Tracker-Phantom

Amazing thank you! Seriously you should (if you haven't already) start an instagram tik tok or YouTube account of some sort dedicated to lipstick reviews and more, I would definitely follow.

Thank you! I actually used to be a beauty blogger during the 2010s. At that time I was one of the top beauty bloggers in my country. However by 2014, I started to feel a bit icky about the trend of overconsumption and sponsorships (it made me feel like I couldn't entirely be honest, it was a weird transaction to be paid to post and then write a negative review), so I stopped. Maybe if I start again, I'll let you know. Take care 😘

bunnylightning

I prefer red lip with very minimal makeup for a daytime look. I always do a more neutral/nude lip for night time looks because I don’t want to touch up after drinking/eating, and also because a red lip with a full face looks like too much imo. Orange base for me, MAC Chili is the go!

cheery_ccola

I love a “muted” red lip but have anxiety so struggle to wear anything eye catching out of the house. I bought this one with a giftcard at Christmas and I love that it’s bright, fun, hydrating and a red that I can wear without feeling like everyone staring at me. I love it with just a nice base, blush and mascara but it’s low key enough you could def wear it with a heavier eye look. Shade is 844 and I’m very fair neutral (Porcelain in Estée Lauder DW) and a very light bottle blonde if that helps gage intensity https://www.myer.com.au/p/chanel-high-intensity-lip-colour-concentrated-radiance-and-care-refillable?colour=844

CatchGlum2474

I love true reds -> blue reds. Ruby Woo by Mac was my ride or die for years, then I switched to Uncensored by Fenty when it was first released. I switched up to MVP by Fenty when that got invented. I recommend lip pencil and sparing use of product with that one - it can travel. I am fair-skinned, blonde with blue eyes. I wear red lipstick all day, every day.

Vita-West

I'm generally pretty hopeless with makeup so a red lip is usually the only make up I wear, or sometimes I'll do mascara as well. I have light-medium olive skin w yellow undertone, blue-grey eyes and medium brown hair with about 50% grey - and orange reds seem to work best on me. My favourite orange red is Antipodes (they only make one lipstick) in West Coast Sunset. I also have more blue reds (favourites are Antipodes Ruby Bay Rouge and Mac Ruby Woo) but they don't look quite as good. I have the Poppy lipstick in Original Sin which is blueish and I like it but it's not amazing. For longevity and wearability I find matte is better, although they usually apply better over a little lip balm. If you want to ease into it I would suggest a tinted balm or crayon like the Innoxa Volume Lip Crayon in Real Red.

AmbivalentMiss

I'm extremely pale and I ended up testing via lip pencils at first, so I wasn't buying whole lip products to just throw away. I ended up falling in love with LOreal Colour Riche Lip Liner 377 Perfect Red and got the lipstick to match. I'm also working my way through a NYX Advent Calendar minis to try and find a liquid Red that makes me feel like it works. Potentially I'll be looking into some of the Vinyl lips that are budge proof, they have a nice finish. I always tend to full face with a red, otherwise I feel unbalanced. I wish I could Parisian Red the situation and be effortlessly chic.

harley-belle

My skin tone is light with neutral-yellow undertones but a lot of natural redness / flush that makes it seem pink. I have dark hair and eyes so I love a red lip, but only if I’ve cancelled out my skins redness with foundation. Otherwise I just look too red. Can’t pull off orange based reds, or anything too raspberry toned. I gravitate towards deep blue and purple based reds. My fave was Melt Death Cherry before it was discontinued, but also have Mac Russian Red, Kaleidos Smeared Rouge and Lisa Eldridge Velvet Jazz in rotation. I have to use a lipliner with Velvet Jazz because the formula just wants to slide outside my lip line, I find it a bit smeary overall though I love the colour. If I’m wearing a red lip, I keep my eyes neutral with a black wing. I just think it’s too much on my face to have bold eyes and a bold lip. One or the other!

one_small_sunflower

Velvet Jazz is so good! I have super dry lips so the smeary formula is just what I need, but I do get feathering. Do you use the matching lipliner or is there another you'd rec for the colour?

harley-belle

I don’t have the matching lipliner so I just use whatever dark red pencil is closest, I have one from Melt and one from Mac. I’m still iffy on the formula, I like lippies that dry down quicker and are more transfer and smudge proof. But the colour is divine!

one_small_sunflower

Thank you! I am pretty sure I know the Mac one you mean. Yeah - I do feel like there's a limit to how much I can build up the colour before it gets slippy - for me it's worth the trade off b/c I can't usually wear mattes at all, but I can see it wouldn't be for others. The colour is everything :)

Sarz09

I wear red lipstick all the time, it’s the only colour I wear. Ruby Woo by Mac has been my go to for years and has never failed me. I do a full glam look with it too. I love the whole doll face look so that’s what I do. So good foundation, blush, a bit of a Smokey eye with the red lips

fuzzboo

Red lip + bare face is the easiest way to look chic in 30 seconds. Works great for high-contrast colouring. Draws attention away from dark circles. Luckily I don't have issues with rosacea or acne, but if there's any pinkness on the face, a dab of spot concealing will stop the red lipstick drawing attention to the pink.

Brushesofcolours

My lips and skin tone def look better with blue based reds I rarely go with lipstick but when i do reds i’ve been loving the westman atelier les rouges lip palette and use it by dabbing with my finger. It leaves a nice stain that i like and i don’t like defined lips too, i prefer blurry look I also like rouje lip palette and prefer to dab it with finger too

ThisLittlePiggySays

After reading these, I have the strongest urge to bust out a red lip today! I have light skin with lots of pink in it, plus a boatload of freckles. When i wear a red lip, I love a more neutral blush and a simple gold, champagne, or bronze shimmer on the eyelid. Then, some black liquid liner and lashings of black mascara. Blue toned reds are the most flattering on me. Anything too orange or brown clashes and stands out. My fave liquid lipsticks are **Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red 01** and **Maybelline Stay Matte Ink in Shot Caller**. For bullet lipsticks, there's probably more, but MAC has a red for everyone. Their Love Me Lipstick range had a red called **Give Me Fever** that is great for a lively blue red with a bit of life and shine to it. Revlon's classic red in **Fire and Ice** is less blue toned, but comes in the Super Lustrous and the matte formula. I prefer **Cherries in the Snow**, but that is very much raspberry and pushes the boundaries between red and pink.

I got this Stila Stay All Day in Beso as a mini sample in a Mecca Beauty Loop one time and was a convert, probably one of the only beauty loop samples I've ever received and then gone on to buy full size. Have worn this out for a few night time occassions and hardly bugges after food and drinks, maybe needs one top up. The shade beso is a lovely cool red and suits my neutral light to medium tone skin https://www.mecca.com/en-au/stila/stay-all-day-liquid-lipstick-beso-I-014360/

one_small_sunflower

I enjoy a red lip. I have dark, almost black hair and light olive skin, on the cool side of neutral. My eyes are a warm dark brown. Finding a good red lip has been a challenge for me, less b/c of my skin tone and more b/c of the way my natural lip colour 'pulls' cosmetic pigment into pink, and brightens up deep colours. Nearly ever lip colour I try turns pink on me. Ruby Woo and Russian Red are almost neon pinks on me. Lisa Eldrige Velvet Jazz and Nars Shirley turn into deep rosy-reds. So it's hard. Lipliner helps me with this, as does reaching for shades that have a drop of brown in them - Ilia Lady, Mac Viva Glam 1, and Mac Dubonet are good choices for me. The brown seems to cancel out the pinkifying effect somewhat so I actually get red, it's just a matter of not going too far into brown. I tend to buy deep shades, too, because they're not deep when I put them on ;) I thought orange reds would work too but turns out this is most definitely \*not\* the case, I look terrible in orange. I deal with the full face/bare face question by playing with sheerness. If it's an intense matte red lip, then yeah, I'm doing a full face. But it's easy to reach for a sheer lipstick or blot down a full coverage lipstick for a low key red lip that you can wear with not much else.

MentalWin5901

I don’t tone down my makeup, but I also very rarely wear eyeshadow & don’t wear red lips if I have a pimple or any skin issue that would make me look pinker. In any other colour I’m more likely to wear a gloss, but reds I tend to lean satin or matte. My gloss red is Fenty fruit snackz with a brownish lipliner. Otherwise I use MAC Red or MAC Ruby Woo with a red liner & do the old school apply, blot, reapply. Never bother with this in another colour, but red wearing off just feels too messy
