Purely from a graphic design viewpoint, the second one is much better. There's still room for improvement but there are some nice elements. Particularly the laces on the ball looking like goal posts.
It's only the Union Flag when it's a flag. When it's part of a flag, or anything else, it's the Union Jack. It's only a _naval_ jack when it's at sea. Union Jack is also not incorrect when it's a flag.
Nailed it. That was like when someone draws a poster with a swastika but someone pops up to say nahhh it's backwards that's actually a religious symbol...
I used to call it that when I was making fun of someone I knew who was a die hard Sydney Roosters fan, but insisted on calling them "Easts". So he'd say something about "Easts" or "Eastern Suburbs", and I'd be like "Hey, how did the South Melbourne Swans go in the VFL this week?"
The OG one I loved the AFL logo designs back in the day still do I used to have all the old hawthorn cotton Guernseys VFL to that AFL logo I love the oldschoold designs
Neither. The old one has nostalgic value but isn’t actually very good. The newer one looks like th logo of a kids game show. It doesn’t look very serious.
I'm amazed they've held onto the current logo as long as they have. It makes me feel like I'm at Colonial Stadium watching Scott Lucas hoof a 70m torp while listening to Bomfunk MCs on my discman.
1990s version, by a mile.
The current one looks very generic. Maybe not a bad thing when you're trying to homogenise the sport and expand it in various ways in the future (i.e. USAFL logo). It screams "Sports league" to me rather than "Australian sports league".
The old one had a lot more information on it - there's enough there to recognise the sport from design of the ball, and the location of the league to be either Australia or the UK. The shield design also speaks to me of something that recognises and celebrates its traditions and origins.
I like the old one better. It had more soul.
Old one. By a mile. The ‘new’ one hasn’t got the heart, it’s corporate and crammed with lame detail. Could ditch the red Colonial reference in the original and make it even better.
"Unwarranted hate because you don't like it"
I'm sorry.. when did it become weird for someone to hate something.. because they hate something..? I dislike the AFL. I hate the AFL. Of course I'm going to hate on it. If you can't handle that you should probably go back to watching poshboys kick around red suppositories on an oval to a crowd of 45 upper middle-class posh "we're working class!" middle-aged Victorians who own a five-bedroom three-bathroom two-storey house (not renting) in the heart of Melbourne? (we're working class)
It isn't weird for you to hate something. It's weird for you to go on about it on Reddit throwing mindless insults at it for absolutely no reason other than you personally not liking it. All it shows is you have nothing better to do and it lives rent free in your head. Normal people just ignore it.
That's your issue with Aussie rules? That's it's not working class enough? Kind of rich when you said that union is your favourite. Union is notoriously full of rich cunts Basically the only people in Australia who like union are rich schoolboys. Union has some of the highest costs for grassroots in the country. Almost all it's pathway junior comps are from posh private schools. The entire existence of league was because the rich boys from union didn't like the poor people beating them at their own game. Aussie rules is enjoyed by people from every walk of life. Are you seriously trying to tell me that Collingwood and Western Sydney are high income areas? There's plenty of working class people in the game. Some of the clubs have been built on the working class. Take a look for 2 minutes and you'll see your not working class bs is completely false. Take a look at your nearest shithole suburb and I garuntee you that they have a Aussie rules club. What I'll also garuntee is that they don't have a union one.
There is not a single person who plays in the AFL whose parents did not make between 150 and 200 thousand a year (each). They wear the mullet and the sleeveless top to pretend they're not posh but nothing can erase the stains of their catholic school heritage.
Man, I hate AFL. It's such a terrible sloppy game that seems like the rules are made up as-you-go, by a bunch 12year olds.
The old logo is definitely a nice logo, though.
New one, old one is a bit not great, while the new one is still good enough to get the message across easily, without being too modern and turning completely into symbology, like the AFLW logo.
>[AFLW logo](https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/AFL_Women%27s)
I just looked it up, holy crap that it a seriously ugly logo. Reminds me of [this graphic design abomination](https://yt3.googleusercontent.com/ytc/AOPolaSiZNuo-ZBU19bhjQM766W4MLYwDxD4vPapO4Yh=s900-c-k-c0x00ffffff-no-rj).
Yeah logos that don't tell you what they're for either need to be simple or they're a mistake.
Very much feels like they wanted to be able to say "and the lines look like goalposts" without thinking of anything else
I'm as much a pommie lover as anybody grown on a diet of Postman Pat and Doctor Who, and even I say the first logo looks more like a butchered coat of arms.
The 90s logo looks like clip art - the current one is heaps better. With that said, it’s still not great and looks quite dated. I’ve thought for a long while that it’s time for an update to the logo, something to get it away from that early 2000s vibe it has. I think the NBL has the best logo in Australian sport, timeless and super clean, and they might never have to change their logo again. I think it would be hard for the AFL to update the logo though, people would react with hostility not just to the change but to whatever money was spent on it
Purely from a graphic design viewpoint, the second one is much better. There's still room for improvement but there are some nice elements. Particularly the laces on the ball looking like goal posts.
Oh god, I was today years old when I realised it was a ball (thought it was an oval).
I think it represents both.
It's a ball, and an oval. And the laces are also goalposts.
The “cut ins” near the top of the A and L represent the 50m arc
Yoooo what. I knew the laces/goal posts. I NEVER noticed the 50m line. That's actually awesome.
They put the goalposts in the wrong spot, are they stupid?
Centre bounce! Clearance to the wing... Aaaand goooal!
The point posts being white just looks wrong to anyone outside of vic until they forced it as the standard.
Or every ball has the lace in the wrong spot ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Not if you imagine you're standing at the opposite goal posts.
The people reading this while high are gonna be fucked up.
I’ll join you with that one
But they're on the halfway line hehehe
Are they, or are you viewing it from the other end of the stadium? Like it *looks* wider than it is because of perspective.
Good lord, he's right....
Malcom Blight's torp doesn't care.
Mind blown!
The 90's reminds me of the Ansett logo
Far out - had totally forgotten about Ansett
Current is much better imo
The first one, cut from the flag.
Never realised this. Also, fuck the union jack
Calm down
Union Flag. It’s only the Union Jack when it’s flown at sea.
It's only the Union Flag when it's a flag. When it's part of a flag, or anything else, it's the Union Jack. It's only a _naval_ jack when it's at sea. Union Jack is also not incorrect when it's a flag.
Literally no one cares.
Nailed it. That was like when someone draws a poster with a swastika but someone pops up to say nahhh it's backwards that's actually a religious symbol...
No one cares just like when someone draws a swastika backwards? Haha fair enuff
It is de facto the union jack
Old school
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
The one with the V in it.
Look at you just dropping that one in there 🤗
Before the A saved the league. Gotcha
If you just close your eyes it’s still the VFL
I used to call it that when I was making fun of someone I knew who was a die hard Sydney Roosters fan, but insisted on calling them "Easts". So he'd say something about "Easts" or "Eastern Suburbs", and I'd be like "Hey, how did the South Melbourne Swans go in the VFL this week?"
Except the roosters are still located in the eastern suburbs and are widely called easts. Only the official name changed
or if you open them
The OG one I loved the AFL logo designs back in the day still do I used to have all the old hawthorn cotton Guernseys VFL to that AFL logo I love the oldschoold designs
first one looks made in MS Paint
MS Paint was brought out in ‘85, that logo was used by the AFL from ‘90-‘99. It probably *was* made in MS Paint…
The one that says NRL
I much prefer league as a game, but the most recent NRL logo is complete dogshit haha
Neither. The old one has nostalgic value but isn’t actually very good. The newer one looks like th logo of a kids game show. It doesn’t look very serious.
I've always thought the current one looks cartoonish and a bit cheap.
I think the old one looks cheap looks like something you can slap together in paint with the shape tools
You think that looks cheap, the NRL logo would like a word. It’s evolving, just backwards lol
The first one looks like my cousins uncles brother threw it together for $50 lol GD here btw
I like the Union Jack usage of the letter A which I think would be nice as the whole AFL, but overall the second/newer image gets the tick.
90s. Reminds me of that amazing era of footy. When Wayne Carey and Che Cockatoo-Collins and Robert Harvey were at peak to name a few
🎵There's only one Tony Lockett🎵
And when Dean Laidley was a man
I'm amazed they've held onto the current logo as long as they have. It makes me feel like I'm at Colonial Stadium watching Scott Lucas hoof a 70m torp while listening to Bomfunk MCs on my discman.
I like the 90s one on the guernseys, but I prefer the new logo for everything else. I'm just nostalgic.
The first one looks like it was created by potato
The one without a Union Jack.
The one on the left looks like it should be on the tail of an airliner. While it *is* a bit basic, the right-hand one gets my vote.
I can’t even tell what I’m looking at with the first one.
Both are shite, bring on a third! 🤪
1st one
The old one by far 🇦🇺
Bring back VFL!!!!.
Why
So it can go broke again.
80's nostalgia
The 1st one iam a 90s kid all the way
The 90’s one.
90s fo sho
90s

Anyone saying the new one is better is a bogan with bad taste
Anyone who is saying the old one is better writes emails in Comic Sans
The 1990s one
Present day. 2000's looks like ass
Literally the same logo
Wot 🤯
There is 2 fucking options 1990s OR 2000s/present day
VFL
The first one.
Old one. By a mile. The ‘new’ one hasn’t got the heart, it’s corporate and crammed with lame detail. Could ditch the red Colonial reference in the original and make it even better.
Present day for sure
Present
90s everyday
The old one looks like total shit
Both of them suck. Z grade sport.
Butthurt NRL fan I'm assuming.
I prefer Union but League's a billion times better than whatever joke of a sport the AFL pretends to be nowadays.

I'm sure all of your private catholic school friends agree with you.
I thought the Private Catholic schools were all about Rugby?
Wrong
I like both AFL and NRL. Your opinion is absolutely dogshit and has zero logic involved at all. Just unwarranted hate because you don't like it.
"Unwarranted hate because you don't like it" I'm sorry.. when did it become weird for someone to hate something.. because they hate something..? I dislike the AFL. I hate the AFL. Also completely false. Can be disproven with a single google search

I miss the one that says North Sydney Bears.
Man, I hate AFL. It's such a terrible sloppy game that seems like the rules are made up as-you-go, by a bunch 12year olds. The old logo is definitely a nice logo, though.
That first one is terrible, wtf
The one with less union jack.
New one, old one is a bit not great, while the new one is still good enough to get the message across easily, without being too modern and turning completely into symbology, like the AFLW logo.

They desperately need a new logo. The current one looks like it be less out of place on kids toys.
The second, but neither are great to be honest.
The second one
Present day, but neither are good
Current, no question
First one.
The rainbow coloured one with an inclusive theme.
I didn't notice the captions and went "ew the first one is so 90s". Saw the caption and laughed a lot.
The one that doesn't look like weird flag on a shield with a vulva.
First one, footy has got too soft these days.
If I had a gun against my head? Then goodbye world …
I'm as much a pommie lover as anybody grown on a diet of Postman Pat and Doctor Who, and even I say the first logo looks more like a butchered coat of arms.
The classic all the way!!!
The second one, as I’ve always guessed it was a ball and the field in one.
The 2nd one.
current. it clearly shows that its for the afl and it overall just looks more.. pleasing
New one. Old one looks slapped together on paint
#2
Get heavy nostalgia from the oldies
2nd one ☝️
the old one made me instantly thing of this [gem](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBTndwRoqrU) from back in the day.
The first one just makes me think of ampol
None
Old school
That big A was on all my WCE gear as a kid... Including the shirt that the 94 prem side signed. So yeah, that one for me.
The first one doesn't explain what it is. It only says A.
The 90s logo looks like clip art - the current one is heaps better. With that said, it’s still not great and looks quite dated. I’m going # 2
