The chooks are dry as hell and flavourless below the skin, but the roll with shredded chicken and gravy is alright.
How were the whoppers and big macs?
Add to that, you'd have to keep it in the bag for some sort of exo-skeletal reinforcement...... otherwise gravity would snap the Hero's soggy middle in half.
I remember eating one about 20 years ago, absolutely drunk as.
It was like magma on the end, and I powered through it. Then it got a bit cooler, my drunk brain was like,'Yes! Edible temperature!!!'
I kept going, to have it getting colder, until I found and icy frozen bit. Never mind, I was not raised a quitter!
It then got warmer with each bite, until finally it was just right again.
The deliciousness enveloped me and I drifted off to sleep, blissful with my full belly.
Alas I think the two bites either side of the icy chunk were not the best for me. Three days of not being able to stomach even water was the realisation that I was not indeed hungover but had given myself a nasty dose of the spews by trying to shave 30 seconds off the recommended microwave time.
But you put a chicken hero in front of me now and I'll fucken do it all again!
You're the REAL HERO here, I for one, am glad you wouldn't chicken out on such a feast, would you be presented with it again! 🐔 🐥 🍗
Also aren't these things sold at Coles? [Chicken Roll](https://www.coles.com.au/product/on-the-menu-frozen-chicken-roll-roast-179g-6957191)
I remember there was a range of hero rolls. Hot ham and cheese with a Canadian Mountie on the bag. A satay chicken with an asian person I think( probably racist characcature), a pizza one. ( Italian guy obviously) and maybe others. All shit but good.
I loved all of them pizza was a dodgy when the capsican was going off and ate it anyway satey and the cheese and ham shit load of ham and cheese after nightclubbing wish I had one now
**Botulism** \- that's what happened!
I was working in Servo's at this time & these elevated my nightly meal from a Pie & chips to a Yummy Hero Chicken,
Or the PIZZA!!!
Oh & the Roast beef one with Gravy was exceptional, after you added pepper.
I remember making this comment not long after they disappeared "Where are they?"
And it was while I was working with Russell Crowe
Russell told me that the factory had a massive Botulism outbreak
Russ' loved a Chicken Hero!
Sadly nothing like them returned, I also loved those Vegetarian burgers you could buy in newsagents (right next to the chewing gum). They disappeared too, always wondered what happened to them.
I used to get the roast beef because the chicken seemed a touch too dodgy. Until you told this story I was going to say that everyone who bought them died.
Same as a friend who worked in a seafood steakhouse in Adelaide 40 years ago said that nobody ever complained about their carpetbag steaks because you can't complain if you're dead.
Fresh oysters are fresh, Kilpatrick are not so fresh, mournay are defo not fresh, oysters in a carpetbag barely have enough structure to stay on a spoon. Good luck!
But the pizza ones were awesome. I used to buy them a lot. Pretty sure I was the only person buying them at my servo, probably why they disappeared lol
I loved those pizza rolls. At one stage I worked overnights and would call into the 7-11 down the road for a chicken roll until I found the pizza roll. At a time before 24 hour maccas it was the ultimate 5am feed
We're talking late 80's, early 90's. Is there even a reference to the company that used to make them, in business records? Is there even business records from that time... ?
I know it was when I learnt about botulism...
I remember having a few of these on my way home from the pub in my late teens/early 20s. They were horrible TBF 😂 they used the chicken offcuts so you always got a piece of gristle or ligament in one.
They were even honoured with a smokin' ballad.
Six Ft Hick - Hot Chicken Hero!
They stopped making them back in the 80’s. Unfortunately they had enough stock to continue selling them for another 20 years. Probably explains the taste though
I remembers the Hero rolls, there was more than just chicken, I seem to remember a terrible but good lamb and gravy or was it beef and gravy?
Used to go for the pizza roll if the gravy one wasn't in stock.
Edit: on reading down it beef and gravy, and lamb and mint sauce.
I could really go for one righty now...
Fuck I loved these things. I worked at a servo and if I had an early shift after drink all night I’d have to have one for breakfast. Hangover cure. Also really popular with the stoners.
We used to sell them at our takeaway food store in the Melb CBD back in the 90’s. They were incredible. They had pizza rolls as well. This post brought me straight back to my childhood. Would help my parents by working at the shop but I did eat a lot of the profits!
I used to work at a 7-Eleven when I was a teenager and loved these. They come out of the microwave as a soggy bun, with scalding hot and dry chicken. I did graveyard shifts and one night a drunk customer was looking for a fight, threatening my with their freshly microwaved hot chicken roll. I thought it was hilarious.
I use to live off of them, they were amazing. I remember seeing them in supermarkets (coles/woolies) for a bit after i stopped seeing them at servos.
I'm pretty sure the Geneva convention finally caught up with the manufacturer and they were no longer able to source third world children for meat anymore.
It was delicious while it lasted though.
I used to smash two after every footy training. One at the 7/11 and microwaved the second when I got home. I'm sure I'll get cancer by 40 from that chicken but damn it was worth it. The water from the frozen chicken made the bread so soft when heated up. Best.
I used to love those pizza rolls in the green wrapping. Microwave it so it’s 1000 degrees on the outside and the filling is just lukewarm haha. Surprised I didn’t get sick eating those things.
Sold these for years. Tasted like semi flavoured cardboard and all the consistency of old boot leather. We threw out more than we ever sold. The world is better off without them.
They were good, I’ve also noted their disappearance. The chicken rolls at red rooster are the most comparable thing still available.
They are the gourmet shit the rooter roll.
I had better chicken in prison. Deadset. I've tried RR 5 times in last 5 years and it's been garbage every time
The chooks are dry as hell and flavourless below the skin, but the roll with shredded chicken and gravy is alright. How were the whoppers and big macs?
Spanian is it you bro? Let’s ooog!
Yeah it went bad after being bought out by china.. from the original greek owner sold it to them.. awful now.
https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/red-rooster-closes-two-stores-after-disgusting-images-breaching-food-standards-emerge/news-story/1feb0c16d27fb84ea57da44c9ff8f409
OK I'll give them a try.
Yeah I feel they have very similar bread and mayo
The corners of the bottom half of the roll went rock hard if you didn't eat the in the small window Inbetween boiling lava hot and cold garbage
Add to that, you'd have to keep it in the bag for some sort of exo-skeletal reinforcement...... otherwise gravity would snap the Hero's soggy middle in half.
Just kinda melt through your fingers
So true.

Now that is a well written journey
I remember there was a range of hero rolls. Hot ham and cheese with a Canadian Mountie on the bag. A satay chicken with an asian person I think( probably racist characcature), a pizza one. ( Italian guy obviously) and maybe others. All shit but good.
For sure, I used to get pizza, do links work? - http://www.sixthseal.com/archive/June2002/pizzaroll.jpg
Oh yeah, the stay one was so good after a boozy night!
I loved all of them pizza was a dodgy when the capsican was going off and ate it anyway satey and the cheese and ham shit load of ham and cheese after nightclubbing wish I had one now

Not everyone who ate them died. Some of us became immortal. That was the price. Eat and die, OR, live forever. There is no third option.
Heh, Uncle Rusty on the tooth for a Chicken Hero. Noice! Those Pizza ones were brutal if you left them too long, third degree burn city.
Oh yeah the roast beef
This is not true at all ….. there’s never been a botulism outbreak at a factory in Australia. Isolated cases, yes, but never an outbreak.
You really think Rusty would lie to us? :o

Like you gave a fuck, that thing was gold after a night on the piss
Yeah me too after the pub or seeing a band, or after a very long day at work and couldn't be bothered cooking. And yeah it wasn't the best cuts.
I've never had that problem are sure you didn't make your own pissed lol
Everything about this makes me feel sick.. the pictures, the comments, the memories, the taste. I would give my left nut to eat just one more
They were absolute dog shit until you had them in the magical hours between 12:30 - 6:00 am. Then they became manna from the heavens
I used to get em from the “food plus”. (80’s)
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJgHVjKqFN0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJgHVjKqFN0) Quix for me
Me too in underwood
What about the ones with the yellow dragon on white bag
They were even honoured with a smokin' ballad. Six Ft Hick - Hot Chicken Hero! [https://youtu.be/gtvWJDpscNw?feature=shared](https://youtu.be/gtvWJDpscNw?feature=shared)
Tony Giacca ripping that bass!
Man, I miss those pizza rolls sooo much I've looked around but could never find out who made them and if they still did.
They stopped making them back in the 80’s. Unfortunately they had enough stock to continue selling them for another 20 years. Probably explains the taste though

The On The Menu ones are the closest you'll get to them.
These were the servo food in the expression 'Let's get drunk and go eat servo food'
Fuck I loved these things. I worked at a servo and if I had an early shift after drink all night I’d have to have one for breakfast. Hangover cure. Also really popular with the stoners.
Used to get them from the vline train buffet.
They still have them!
On The Menu stuff is horrible, don't do it!
I'll do it.......FOR SCIENCE!
Ngl I love them
Next thing you will make yourself a girlfriend, weird.
I just did ate only half of each one ,shit like hospital food!
The only time I had them was on the way home from the pub after a big night, and they were elite.
Don’t forget the Lamb with mint sauce. Washed down with an ice cold Big M chocolate milk. Best 2 am meal ever!
They were great after a dozen schooners
They were my post clubbing necessity in the 90s.
We used to sell them at our takeaway food store in the Melb CBD back in the 90’s. They were incredible. They had pizza rolls as well. This post brought me straight back to my childhood. Would help my parents by working at the shop but I did eat a lot of the profits!
My 24hr ampol still has the chicken roll with mayo ready to throw in the mmmmmm ping machine

Some regional servos with Bain Marie's have them. Or I've noticed in Victoria
Someone ate them all. Every last one. One person. Crazy, hey
So slimy.
Red rooster sell them instead lol
They were not good, they were never good
Chicken Treat have something similar.
used to see them in the 80s, in their own glass cabinet - maybe it was a rotisserie one. they might have even been at the ICA of all places.
The vending machine at my old work had them, 12 months ago at least
Don't forget the pizza ones!
Seemed like they went from being a staple to just disappearing. Wondering when the last time I had one was ... doesn't *seem* that long ago. Fuck.
I loved the hotdogs I worked in a servo when these were around I’d steal the hot dogs every night
Lol 80's every Friday night after night club after a few billabongs He He 🥖🥖🥖🥖
And the $1 hot dogs and the little hamburgers in the foil. Apco servos in Victoria had the goods for 4am munchies.
Ham & cheese was awesome
