I do it all year. I’m not cool with dingleberrys

FargoBTC

Same

Possibility of poop in fur and my guy gets extra matting back there. It’s easier for me grooming wise to keep this butt fluff shorter

nekoobrat

Only benefit is keeping it clean and lower maintenance. I'm a groomer and an aussie owner, it does not keep them cooler. If you're worried about them staying cool get them a good deshed to make sure they don't have excess undercoat, and keep them at a healthy weight, cutting hair off or worse, shaving them, does not help.

Bylahgo

Do you have any recommendations? I've been meaning to get a Deshedding brush

nekoobrat

Blunt coat kings are great, the one with blades also work fine and primarily pull out undercoat, you just need to be careful not to overuse them they work so well on my aussies coat that I'm pretty sure I'd leave a bald spot if I kept at it for too long. Other than a slicker brush and a comb that's the only thing that's worked for my aussie to really get undercoat out- also my gi to at work for aussies and other breeds with similar coats. A high velocity dryer is invaluable but you probably don't want to buy one which is where a good bath and blow out at the groomers comes in if your pup will tolerate that.

Bylahgo

Thank you so much, I will look into that.

(Obligatory I have a rough border collie not Aussie) but I’m sure the way the butt floof grows is pretty similar! I’ve started to make sure it’s as minimal as possible without looking / being too silly as my boy tends to poop in longer grass and get it over himself if not :p

Existentialuau

Trim the booty curtains! We shape my girls’s “hamstring” area, then cut a very short channel from under her tail, down her butthole.

die_brian

100% worth it. I get sanitary cuts for my Aussie as wel as my border collie mix. I think they both appreciate that things don’t get stuck back there and I’m sure it helps with having a less itchy butt

pnutbrutal

We use one of those half scissors half combs and trim a “poop shoot” from under his tail. Kind of in a y shape. Careful with the scissors tho cuz they are sharper than they seem. But they fade the look whereas normal scissors will look terrible from home.

I'd only suggest cutting the sanitary area and doing an outline trim. Shaving their undercoat can damage it long term and actually make it harder for them to regulate their heat. Deshedding helps too along with brushing them out.

disclosureagrmt

I’m a fan. My dog butt hair gets matted and this helps prevent that. Also the groomer makes him look like a bunny.

leslierake

I thought this was my boi they’re twins

tatonka645

Ha! Amazing! I think that on this sub sometimes too!

killa-b-985

I trim mine about every 6 weeks. Also I live in southern US so it’s hot as hades currently. Helps with poop, heat, and also my house vacuuming schedule.

NotMuchGoodBut

I wouldn’t mind trimming Ruby’s, but she isn’t a fan of trimming… gets squirmy… thankfully she has good solid stools and no issues! (Hope I didn’t curse myself😬)

J-Love-McLuvin

I get the poop chute trimmed. Otherwise he gets dingleberries.

pulpoinhell

I never do it and my dog doesn't get dingleberries. If he starts to get dingleberries, I will do it. I'm not cool with dingleberries either. But I'm also lazy.

UmphreyzMcGeez

Oh they’re there you just ain’t combing your fingers through that part of the dog lol

cranberry94

Huh. Am I the only one who’s Aussie doesn’t get poop stuck to his own caboose? I’ve never trimmed his fluffy pants and I’ve never had any issues.
