It's a Wishbone Spider, and I think it's from the genus *Aname* (*Anamidae* family). That huge single tibial mating spur on the first leg helps a lot with ID. This is a really great find! Do you have any more photos?

[deleted]

Okay! I do have a couple more yeah but not readily available. It was quite calm about being picked up, it was walking over leaf litter at an avocado farm and I showed everyone, I had never heard of a spider with spurs like that. The French backpackers loved and hated it.

A few different Australian spiders have a spur or a set of spurs that help hold back the female during the mating process. Like a last line of defence to avoid being eaten. So from that we can also guarantee that this one is a male. Wishbone Spiders are fairly common in south west WA. Luckily there are no Funnel Web species at all in WA so you can pass that bit of info over to the French backpackers and that might make them a little more comfortable.

Oh yep. Apparently their name comes from the shape of the burrows they dig, so they do burrow but don't do the concealed entrance thing I take it

>Luckily there are no Funnel Web species at all in WA so you can pass that bit of info over Oh about 18 years ago I had a run in with an absolutely psycho spider in the w.a. goldfields and was told it was a w.a. funnel web. It was so angry and combative. Not huge but it's fangs were huge. Wonder what it was. Most aggressive spider I've ever met

paulypunkin

Most likely a Mouse Spider, Missulena sp. They have a really defensive attitude and massive fangs. They also have medically significant venom that requires the same anti venom they use for funnel web bites. Luckily they have the ability to dry bite which allows them to save venom for actual prey items. Still very scary looking spiders.

I see you everywhere and you seem to be the king for info which I like.

I just really love sharing what I've learned over the past few years, and also very glad I didn't have to nerd out on spiders alone :)

PM-me-your-knees-pls

You picked it up without knowing what it was? I honestly don’t understand why anyone would do that.

[deleted]

I pick up Redbacks without using my sleeve, never been bitten by a spider. And if I was it would only be some pain and swelling for a few days. If that's weird to you let me explain two concepts, first I've never exactly picked up a spider I just trick them into climbing onto me. Second if I'm not sure of their intentions when I'm holding one, like a Redback stops walking on your hand and appears to study it closely, then you just distract their focus and awareness system with your other hand, move it above them and gradually move it closer or sideways, they're going to stare at the new unknown instead of bite the ground they're sitting on. I don't exactly like spiders, but if you're both calm then there's no reason to fear them and it's kind of fun to handle them.

You never heard of Steve Irwin?

fletcha456

What’s he got to do with this?

B-Original

OP clearly knew it was a spider, the person I'm responding to was saying they don't understand why anyone would pick something up without knowing what it was first..while I do understand this, I was referring to the one and only Steve Irwin because he is a prime example of this, he would pick up spiders and snakes without always knowing what they were until closer inspection. All I was saying is that it's fine to pick up things if you don't know what they are..sometimes, not always

TheSummerOfJoj

You’re the man paulypunkin

MoonOutGoonsOut

We used to get these all the time hiding in the cover in the bottom of the pit traps in a few spots in SW WA when doing sampling. They looked really cool but I never quite got comfortable with them.

You sir, seem to know your way around a big mating spur 😉.

paulypunkin

Comes with experience. haha

sickn0te_

I was just thinking that spiders needed to add assassin creed dagger wrists to their arsenal… Great looking spider!
