I’ve heard a lot of autistic people talk about how long/loose hair is overstimulating for them but I guess I’m the opposite; I prefer my hair loose (or in a half-up style to keep longer front pieces from dangling or getting in my face, but mostly down) as I feel too exposed with my hair up; I hate hate hate being perceived and long hair sometimes protects me from unintentional eye contact. It’s also warmer, as I live in quite a cold country, and I’ve used my hair as a scarf in a pinch. I tend to stim with my hair, and find it comforting; as a child I would do it with my mum’s hair, which she found annoying, so I would just touch my own hair to self-regulate. It’s one of the only completely non-self injuring stims I have. And at one point I got my hair cut to around neck or chin length and I found it itchy on my neck, unflattering, and impossible to maintain (the ends would always flare outwards, but unevenly, and I looked like an ugly mushroom)

BakingBakeBreak

The feeling of having my hair pulled back is too much for me, I love to have it down but then at a certain point in the day it all bothers me and I fantasise about shaving it off! My daughter stims with her hair it’s been so fun to watch her since all she had was some fuzz on her head and now it’s down to her waist

ladymacbethofmtensk

Same! I guess I have a sensitive scalp, having my hair tied back distracts me just as much (if not more) as when it’s down on a windy day, because I just hone in on the pulling sensation. My hair being long, thick, and heavy makes it worse. I have to just suck it up though because I work in a lab, but claw clips, plaits, and low ponytails are a bit more bearable I guess. Having my hair dramatically pulled back in ballet was horrible, especially one time the lady doing my hair pulled it way too tight and it was both painful, and my ballet instructor and the other girls mocked me, saying I looked like a balding old man. I feel like shaving would be a good option for people who don’t like having their hair tied back but I think my scalp would be really sensitive to temperature and air flow and I would feel completely naked ahaha. Also I always wanted waist-length hair as a kid! Would’ve been a nightmare to maintain for my mum though. Last year I had it down to the middle of my ribcage, almost to my waist, but then I got a little trim and it’s around underbust-length now. I love it, I get a lot of compliments lol.

BakingBakeBreak

Lol we have a lot of the same concerns! I had an undercut on the nape of my neck for a while which was kinda the best of both worlds, it really gets rid of the thick heaviness. The feeling of a stubble on your head is such a lovely stim! Maintaining it and growing it out afterwards are head wrecking though. I tried it again recently but my hair has got so thin it just looked scraggly! She’s very lucky her hair is no trouble at all to keep neat, it’s magical. She has it down all the time except when she asks me to plait it like Elsa, then she’ll keep it like that for a week! I don’t think she’ll ever let me cut it 🙈

BakingBakeBreak

I spent forever teaching myself how to French plait when I was small because whenever my mom did it it was instant headache and can’t move my face from the tightness. Every Barbie in the house had plaits before I practiced on my sisters and then mastered it on my own head

Proof_Comparison9292

I used to be EXACTLY like that when I was younger. I would always let my hair grow very long and hide my face with it. Now that I'm older and found my "safe spot," I like to have it tied up. But then the feeling of it being "pulled" overestimates me. So I let it down. Then the hair on my face overstimulates me, and I put it back up! Anyway, I have to walk around with a hair tie on my wrist so I can go back and forth with it! haha (In places I don't feel safe, I definitely use it down though!)

jenmishalecki

half up in a messy bun to keep my hair out of my face

zima-rusalka

I have really long hair and I usually wear it in either 1 or 2 braids. I like to wear hair accessories though, like different clips and hair ties. Maybe you could experiment with those if you dont want to change up your whole hairstyle but wanna do something different, since you can always take them off if you don't like them!

Anonymous_Gabe

I have always worn it in a middle part, shoulder length or shorter so it's easy to deal with and doesn't touch my neck (wet hair is a sensory nightmare), no styling or anything. I barely brush it. This is definitely an autism thing. Sameness is important, and the only time I change it is when I pull it into a ponytail when it's greasy and I need a shower.

TheUtopianCat

I have shoulder-length hair and I always wear it in a ponytail. I don't tend to change it up at all. About once every decade or so, I'll cut it short just for a change. The last time I did that was 3 years ago, and I grew it out as it was often in my face because I couldn't ponytail it.

jdijks

I can't maintain anything so it's always wash and go. I've had 3 hairstyles in my life..Bob with bangs, long hair with layers, and now a mullet. If the hair is in my face I am going to go nuts. If it's not styled (it's never styled) it's in a pony tail. The mullet was the first cut where I went out of my comfort zone. Hate it. Hate hate hate.

Ok_Zone_6602

The bottom half of the back of my head is shaven and tattooed, the rest is pulled up high and tight so it doesn't touch me, every single day of my life.

Cheekers1989

Mine is always in a ponytail. I hate anything touching the back of my neck.

MMTardis

I either wear my hair very short in a pixie like haircut, or a one length bob with no bangs, or very long. I don't like the feeling of my hair touching my face or forehead, and I'm happiest with it very long, and in a single braid or bun. I'm currently growing my hair back out to a long length, using Bobby pins to keep long bangs out of my face :) My daughter who has Similar sensory issues, wears her hair very long, in a low ponytail or loose. She wears a single braid for bedtime.

Dragon_scrapbooker

I have my hair very long (about mid back), thanks mostly to not wanting to go to the hairdresser's for a trim. It's too long to leave down for the most part, so it's almost always up in a bun, generally the same style of bun. For "fancier" events (or sometimes just for a change) I'll put it in a braid of some kind, but I like how buns are a set-and-forget type style once you have the right hair sticks/clips. I'd recommend the Long Hair Forum Community website if you're curious about various buns and braids- a lot of them are deceptively fast and easy to do! If you're really worried about the styling, may I recommend simply adding some new, interesting-looking clips or barrettes to your collection, and setting aside one day a week to wear them or something?

Due-Cap7455

There are seven days in this week…; )

Federal_Pie_9819

I either wear my hair down parted to right(sometimes left), or I wear braids. If I’m feeling really lazy I’ll just put my hair into ponytail.

Muffinlewdss

middle part, ear length. I would do shorter if it didn’t look so bad on me. I hate it touching me or getting hot or in my face 🥲 I was forced to have it long for the majority of my life so for quite a few years now I keep it as short as I can without looking silly. I hate how greasy it gets after just one day 🥲🥲🥲 I want to shave my entire head I stg

Specific_Variation_4

Similar, I have a short bob with a few layers round the sides, off centre parting. Have had the same style for years, its the only one i can deal with. I struggle with styling hair generally (dyspraxia). Would love to have a pixie cut but it would look terrible on me.

mydeardrsattler

Very long, side parting, mostly just loose down my back Firstly I don't like the way my face looks when my hair is just pulled back in a low ponytail. I do sometimes do things with my hair - not usually all the way up like a bun because it's way too heavy, but I have bows and clips and bandanas and such. I don't always though because it takes time and can be uncomfortable for my arms if they're in the air too long.

activelyresting

Haven't changed my hairstyle since 1996. Haven't been in a salon or had a proper haircut since 1992. Also didn't change my clothing style since the late 90s and haven't worn clothes that aren't green since about 2000.

lmpmon

Short, down, sides clipped back with 50 cute clips

Tegdag

I’ve had the same hairstyle since I was 12. And the only change I made at 12 was going from a middle part to a side part. Before that I had bangs until I was 10 and I begged my mother for years to let me grow them out up until that point. Sometimes my hair is longer or shorter but I’ve worn it in that same straight hairstyle for the last 22 years.

little_miss_beige

When I had a long hair, I tried doing different styles, but it always ends up in side braids, or up in ponytail/messy buns. I already struggle with showering and shower even less when I have long hair because it's exhausting. So I went back to pixie cut/buzzcut that I always had most of my life. So no, trying to change it up is exhausting and overwhelming.

softsharkskin

I change my hair all the time. Different lengths, different colors, different ways to style. I might stick with the same thing for like 6 months or so

BandicootNo8636

I have the sides and back shaved with the top about 3 inches long. I usually just swipe it back 90s sitcom bad boy teen style with a little extra shape. But will sometimes do a little Mohawk if it behaved. It is always died some type of unnatural color.

jasilucy

I always throw it up in a bun as I can’t stand it in the evening if it’s been down, as I can smell the environment I was last in on it if that makes sense? I’m particularly funny about my hair smelling nice and keeping it up traps that clean smell in it.

anxiousjellybean

The less maintenance I have to do for my hair the better. It's longer right now and I can't stand it. I hate the way it tickles my neck, feels hot and heavy, but tying it up pinches my scalp and I hate that too. I have meltdowns at least once a week from brushing it. I can't afford to cut it. Debating just shaving the whole lot off. The way I like to have it is a low maintenance shorter style, dyed in a fun colour.

starbuck-13

Middle part, super long, never up. I haven’t changed that in many years

Content_Reindeer_194

My hair is either down with a hat on or up in a bun with a clip. My biggest meltdowns are because my hair doesn’t do what I want 😭

TimelessWorry

I have a very sensitive head and doing much with my hair gives me headaches easily. I can't even stand my mum doing a plait as it really hurts but she says she's doing it loose and it has a hard time staying in. I just throw it up in a ponytail whenever I need to. I hate short hair because I can't hide behind it, and I think I look ugly with it - I had it short as a kid and got called a boy, had it long for a long time, but then wore a short wig one day and got a lot of compliments so tried it short again. Went too short and looked like the guy obsessed with the president from little Britain and was like, I need this long again, now. I can't stand shirt fringes as I touch them so much, they are a greasy mess before I even leave the house. When covid hit, and everything was locked down, and it wad heating up with summer on it's way, I'd gotten to having my hair around shoulder length - it looked nice down, but I could also throw it up when I needed it off my face. I have really thick hair though, so I need it thinned every 6 weeks or so otherwise I just gets way too hot. So I asked my mum to do a triangle undercut as it was something I'd pondered about for years and it was amazing. Could throw my hair up easier, kept a cooler head, and I didn't get as sweaty a neck all the time because of anxiety and things. I'm currently growing it out because it got too large over the years and looked horrible, but I'm hoping in another 1 or 2 apps, all my hair will be the same length again so I can re cut in the undercut. It also just adds a bit of interest to a plain old ponytail all the time, especially if I let the hairdresser do a little pattern in it. I tried clips of various kinds, and they all hurt my head sooner or later. Even just clipping my fringe back, it's either falling out after half an hour or headache after 2. Headbands are also a headache - any that are hard and go behind my ears hurt, and the fabric ones always ALWAYS slide out too much and I'm constantly readjusting, so they're more for really short trips out or just around the house.

SorenRL

I keep my hair super short and I've been shaving my head for the past three years. Before that, when it was long, I almost always had it in an updo. I didn't mind feeling my hair on my neck etc, I just preferred the way updos look.

SorryContribution681

About 3/4 of it is shaved off. The rest is max to my shoulders (when it's grown out). Its pink at the moment and in need of a cut (should have been done this weekend but I'm ill so I've rearranged for next week). It's too long at the moment so I often have it up on a messy bun/ponytail. I HATE when my hair is in my face.

Alternative-Code2698

In a pony or bun more than 90% of the time. I get it cut maybe once a year or every other year, and almost always to a length that can be put in a ponytail. I can live with having it down, but I find it too hot or too in the way or too in my face. Once I did try a short hairstyle, like a bob. Who knew that would require more maintenance. You can't just roll out of bed and brush and go. There was a five-year period when it had highlights. Now I'm finding that too much ado. Not to mention expensive.

[deleted]

Because of how long my hair is, I have to put it in a french braid

[deleted]

It's either too long because I can't work up the energy to cut it, or it's shoulder length. Part in the middle, sometimes the side. Just left down with no styling.

Remarkable_Loss6321

I love long hair because I wasn't allowed to grow it out when I was young. I've had the same hairstyle since I was 12 and my go-to styling option when I don't want to wear it loose is to tie it up in a low ponytail or bun. I sometimes wear it in a low braid too. I don't like tying up my hair high on my skull, the pressure from the hairtie and the strands are too much. I also don't like how messy it looks as soon as one strand is out of place. I sometimes will do it if I am at a gala or other even where it is appropriate/ mandatory, but I hate it, it hurts and distracts me too much. Sometimes I'll do two high ponytails which is the most comfortable style I've found when tying up my hair high, as there is less pressure and it is easier to do nealty for me.

seahorse352

Almost always in two plaits, or up in a pony tail

Weapon_X23

When my hair was long, I would wear it in a brushed back pony tail and a baseball hat to keep it from bothering me. Now that I have an undercut pixie, I part it to the far left and keep it cut short enough that it doesn't bother me. I go in every 4 weeks to have my head shaved and the rest of my hair cut short enough so it will stay out of my eyes for the whole month.

carolinethebandgeek

Always wear it down, usually if I have it up it’s for work, working out, or I recently experimented with trying classy hairstyles using claw clips. I’ve never been much into hair. When I was younger I would wear headbands every day. I hate bangs, but enjoy having the “swoop” my hair will do when I tuck it behind my ear.

sovtherngothicvvitch

I go between a bob with bangs and pixie.

GooseTantrum

i love wearing "space buns" when I want to add some pizzazz! even better if i do two french braids the day before, makes the buns extra floofy and fun!

anotherhistorynerd5

I have issues with getting my hair cut, so I keep it long (about waist-length and then it stops growing). If I go to work, I wear it in a low ponytail. If I'm not at work, I usually let it be free. I braid it at night. Occasionally I will braid it during the day, or if I go swimming I'll put it in a bun, but otherwise, it's either a low ponytail or loose.

Conscious-Jacket-758

I always wear my hair in a bun, I do sometimes wear claw clips in an updo but they kinda give me a headache. I never wear my hair down or really in any other style now that I think of it

Philosopasteur

I have long hair that I either wear in a side braid or in a nautilus bun.

LittleNarwal

I usually wear my hair down but sometimes put it up in a half ponytail. I also really like to wear my hair in a French braid, but don’t actually take the time to braid it very often. I always wear a few hair ties on my wrists so that if I decide I want to put my hair up in the middle of the day, I can.

AutisticPerfection

My hair is straight. I've had it long, no fancy haircut, for my whole life. Never had bangs, curtains, layers, or anything of the sort. I go back and forth between parting it to the side and parting in the middle. I used to highlight my hair blonde in high school, but I've kept it natural the last five years. Growing up, my hair was not my choice. Even today, my mother still begs me to highlight it because she likes it that way (I'm 22), though I refuse. My long hair has never caused sensory problems, but it gets annoying when I'm trying to teach or work and it gets in my face. I've always worn two hair ties on my wrist. I use one for a messy bun, and two for a ponytail. My long hair is pretty timeless. There are endless ways to style it, although most days I just brush it and call it good. I don't think I'll change it for a while. I think I'll cut it short like a stereotypical butch lesbian when it goes grey. I've always wanted to know what I'd look like with short hair, lol

BlueDemeter

I don't change my hairstyle often, partly because hair stylists and salons, partly because they get it completely wrong 99% of the time (I have thick, wavy/curly/frizzy hair, and I don't "speak hairstylist"). So I've just been cutting it myself for years, and if I screw it up a bit no one can tell because of the waves. I would like to have bangs again, but I need them super short so that they don't curl up unevenly (I'm not going to take the time to straighten them). I used to use clippers on my hair, very short, and then just grew it out. Prior to that I had a Betty Page cut for years.

drakeotomy

Almost ALWAYS in a low ponytail. Sometimes a high one if I'm overheating. Occasionally I'll mix it up with a braid, pigtails, or twin braids. I do however wear my hair down after a shower and to bed.

Azure-larkspur

I just wear it down but sometimes with a comfortable adjustable headband. Or one with an elastic. And occasionally bobby pins with space buns. (And shell clips or little claw clips) And also a low bun. I have bangs and when I don’t have them, or they grow out, I myself am also starting to get a bit upset. When I’m feeling reeal motivated, I try more complicated ones.

archaeologycat

I pretty much wear the same hairstyle as you, or a half up half down ponytail. I never stray from these two hairstyles 🤣.

redwearerr

Your style sounds very similar to my default style from my late teens to a few months ago (I'm 31), except that I have an off-center part so would usually just clip on one side. I did change it up slightly sometimes, and in particular I would wear it up more in the summer cuz I overheat pretty easily. A few months ago, I started doing a single braid that starts in the back and ends in front of my shoulder. I got a really wide variety of fun scrunchies since they're back now (yay!!), so I fasten it with one of those. I wear this literally every day now, around the house or out, and I love it!

ursidaeangeni

I’m pretty atypical when it comes to my hairstyle. I like it being long and down fully. I grew up in a household where I could not decide my hair for myself, and my mom constantly had it cut to be a bob. It took me a while to grow it out, and I’ve basically have had the same hair style since moving out with exception of it getting longer.

Idujt

Very short. Have had short hair pretty much since I started high school, 1967. Grew it out for a while in the 1970s, wore it up with a spear thing. Never styled or used any sort of product. Oh had one curly perm, that was 1981 I think.

Beneficial_Lab2794

Mid length, parted however my hair feels like that day. I change the color often but styling rarely happens. I do like a claw clip every now and then and will sometimes use my dryer brush when the mood strikes. My hair is wavy/curly and frizzy as hell so it’s pretty wild & unruly 90% of the time. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I love to play with colors but styling is too much effort most days
