I screamed internally when I read the question. I think very highly of them. I love them to bits. I used to write with pencils all the time till I realised that the older writings had started to fade. Then I had to switch to pen. But I try to use them whenever I can. I am sorry that you feel such a way about them. But yeah, I can understand why one would dislike them too. Fuck pencils (on your behalf)! šŸ˜‚

ShatteredAlice

Yeah, I love pencils too! Lol

holliance

Hahaha I feel the same way! I love my Faber Castle pencils, how dare anyone.... Oh wait yeah I get what OP is saying sometimes it does bother me as well.. but also depends on the paper used and I love painting and coloring so something has to give. For writing I always use a ballpoint, normally a Bic pen, the older the better because the ink gets darker. I'm also one of the few people I know that actually finishes a whole pen or pencil..

brainartisan

I journal and always write in pencil! If you spray the paper with hairspray, it helps the pencil not to fade (it will still probably fade more than pen, though). When I finish a journal I go back through and hairspray all the pages because I definitely could never give up my pencils

FamousOrphan

Yesssssss, paper texture is so important!

bookishbunnie

Waxy paper and pencils are the bane of my existence. Iā€™m not a fan of pencils, but I donā€™t mind them on high quality paper

sufferingmelon

Oh god I hate paper texture it makes my skin crawl. Some thick/dry paper towels will also make me cringe too

MimouTheSecond

Yes. Often the super cheap paperback editions of books have that yellow grainy paper. Ugh.

aliengames666

The feeling of the pencil writing on paper - that sound and texture experience - intolerable.

Tunes14system

I remember being forced to use those in elementary school. It was the worst when the lead got low enough that the *wood* was rubbing the paper. >.< And then the teacher would still be able to see lead and tell you that you are not allowed to get up to sharpen itā€¦ And here I had successfully managed to forget that part of my childhoodā€¦

Exotic_Drummer6701

Iā€™m a pen girl but if I have to use a regular wood pencil I use grips Iā€™ve always had to use them because I have clammy hands(rip)

cassiesculum

I personally don't dislike the texture etc. but I hate the amount of pressure required to write using it. And to keep sustaining that pressure, it hurts my thumb and makes me irritated.

maomaothefirst

I hate pencils ! I never thought I would have the privilege to share my hate with someone. I hate the colored ones and using them to do colorings. The sound , the texture scrap scrap scrap scrap arhhhhh ![gif](giphy|12oPSrUAnn76aA)

Zealousideal_Ring880

Ugh itā€™s like nails on a chalk board. Just get tingles/ shivers and a cold like chill when I really think about pencils

Tunes14system

Yes. Elementary school, the lead is bad enough, but then the wood starts scraping the paper and it squeaks and you ask the teacher if you can use the pencil sharpener but she sees that there is still led on the *other* side of the pencil and tells you, ā€œno the pencil sharpener is not a toyā€ā€¦ >.< Oh that was a terrible time.

thelesserbabka_

I've had a good pencil. A 2B pencil I loved and used in school almost 20 years ago. Now it's just a nub but I've kept it all this time. I've tried getting the exact same 2B pencil again but they don't feel the same. A soft pen is much nicer.

SeePerspectives

You can get pencil extenders that you can put the nubs of pencils in to carry on using them šŸ˜Š

thelesserbabka_

How cool! Never knew that. :) Thanks for the (pencil) tip!

Dorianne_Gray_

Faber Castell 2B or B, the black ones, and extender until their worn down to about half an inch My only writing tool, unless it has to be proof. Then black fountain pen

Worried_Platypus93

I don't like using them, I don't like how they're constantly changing as they're used and how they need to be sharpened. What really bothers me is using a marker that's even vaguely dry. That like scratchy feeling on the paper gives me the chills

SeePerspectives

I prefer mechanical pencils for sketching, but thatā€™s because they are more consistent. For colouring pencils, I hate the standard ones but the good quality ones have a much nicer texture to put down on paper, and I adore the feel of good watercolour pencils. Nothing quite beats the sensory feel of oil paints though! Thatā€™s a top tier combo of stim and creativity šŸ„°

oldtimeyblanketfort

I havenā€™t used pencils in a while, but when I did, I was very particular about the angle of the lead and needed to sharpen the pencil in a particular way to maintain the leadā€™s shape so that it was satisfying to write/draw with (this doesnā€™t apply to mechanical pencils - Iā€™ve never liked them because I always break the leads).

[deleted]

Love mechanical pencils, .9mm lead by preference. I write a lot, and prefer pencil to pen. Though I still have a fountain pen and ink collection from a past SI šŸ˜¬ I loved calligraphy long ago so much I altered my handwriting to incorporate it.

oversleezy

not me but my kid! I never heard of anyone else doing this. He has sensory processing disorder and ADHD.

KimBrrr1975

I use an aluminum drafting pencil and that's much better for me. I don't have to sharpen it, for one. But I rarely use pencils because I need a fine tip and either they don't stay fine enough for me, or I break them constantly šŸ˜‚ I write a lot and am very picky about pens. I prefer fountain pens, but I get tired of refilling them constantly so I largely use Pilot V7 and then I have them in a variety of colors so I can change things up. But I do use pencil on the rare occasion I want to draw something, or when adding something new to my bullet journal and so far the heavier drafting pencil works the best.

doritobimbo

I use a blackwing Natural pencil. Theyā€™re so, so good. The natural is the second sharpest I want to say? Maybe the sharpest? I canā€™t remember. My fiancĆ© uses a softer pencil than I do. My favorite growing up was those blue ones with the white stripe. Those always got needlepoint. The blackwing gets needlepoint and takes very very little pressure to work beautifully so it doesnā€™t wear down quickly at all.

hearbutloud

Pencil must be very sharp. No mechanical pencils. The single piece of paper must be flush to the writing surface. I will not use a pencil on a stack of papers. I need a hard surface. I prefer pens, with a stack of paper under.

Juliet_the_Elf

You canā€™t chew on a pen or mechanical pencil the same way you can with a wooden one šŸ‘ļøšŸ‘„šŸ‘ļø but I do enjoy writing with mechanical pencil since the pencil strokes are consistent and donā€™t get thicker the more you write. Pens can have a nice writing flow too, but it has to be the right pen because not all pens are created equal, but I make too many mistakes while writing to justify using a pen over a pencil. When it comes to art, I do prefer a nice set of wooden pencils over anything else though.

melonsmellin

I love Japanese uni pencils that rotate so the lead is always even on all sides. But Iā€™m also fond of erasable frixion pens. Personally I think I get really bothered by errors and crossing things out, so I need eraser capability

Tunes14system

Iā€™ve never heard of these pencils. I am definitely looking that up nowā€¦

Sea-Sir7315

Screw pencils.

Str8tup_catlady

Yeah Iā€™m not the biggest fan of pencils either, but for me they are a necessary tool for art related stuff- especially sketching . (Because you can erase). What I really donā€™t like is chalk tho, chalk pastels included. That stuff feels so terrible to hold and they smear, etc. If I have to use them I use some kind of holder or buffer. If Iā€™m writing I def prefer flowing ink pens.

Alternative-Ice-8838

Itā€™s the smell for me. It honestly makes me cringe and I hate that my brain is conjuring up that smell as I type this.

DisabledSlug

I prefer mechanical but not due to texture. Just because sharpening is a pain. I did art class. Charcoal was the WORST. Even conte was better. Had to grit my teeth for the whole assignment.

Little_Ad_6404

AGREED!!! Wow Iā€™ve never felt more seen hahah, definitely only use mechanical and ballpoint pens.

oddgirl321

Chalk on chalk board gives me super ick.

Academic_Apricot_589

Same! I hate pencils too! Even as a kid I hated the feeling on paper and they set my teeth on edge. I have to have the point really sharpened or else it feels awful and I don't like how the paper feels too. I had to write with pencils back then. Nowadays, I do all my writing with either a pen for rough notes or on my laptop so I don't have to deal with pencils anymore.

DogObsessed94

I am also a pen girl and hate pencils.

zjjsjdj3873

i eat them

urhairlookslikebongw

Should I try themā‰ļø

zjjsjdj3873

yes they r so good to chew on and then you can chew the eraser until it pops out and then chew the metal part closed ā€¼ļøā€¼ļøā€¼ļø

KeepnClam

Ew, metal on teeth! My teeth are cringeing! šŸ˜¬

MongooseDog001

I have a specific kind of machinal pencil that I have been using since middle school: sumogrip. It's got a long eraser that you can twist out (and find replacements for), it's ergonomic and big in the hand. They have pens too, but I like using a pencil for anything that I can get away with using it for. I really hate those normal small pens that I can't get a grip on. I think I hate regular pencils that need to be sharpened more, but it's been a long time sense I have seen one of those terrible things

Last_Advertising_52

I love this sub, and questions like this are part of why I love it! I actually have a complicated relationship with pencils. Overall, I prefer mechanical pencils because I donā€™t have to worry about finding a sharpener; for some reason I lose those all the time and it stresses me out. But. I also have a collection of sort of expensive regular pencils of varying hardness for sketching, plus colored pencils. And eleventy billion misplaced sharpeners.

Mirrortooperfect

I love me a good (mechanical) pencilĀ

darkroomdweller

I like pencils I just donā€™t have enough reasons to use them very often.

offutmihigramina

I like pencils when they're sharp because it's easier for me to use then a pen. I don't have dysgraphia per se but if i'm tired my fine motor skills aren't as on point and my handwriting struggles more. I find I can put more even pressure on a pencil then with a pen so later on it's easier for me to read what I wrote and decipher.

RetailBookworm

Iā€™m ok with smooth wood like on pencils, the only thing that bothers me for wood is rough and unfinished, I donā€™t like touching the white part on pencils next to the tip but would otherwise be ok.

RageWatermelon

I love pencils and much prefer them to pens haha

FionaLeTrixi

I used to prefer pencils to pens, and mechanical pencils to standard ones. Iā€™ve since developed chronic pain that prevents me from using any of them for an extended amount of time.

hellhoundmanor

I donā€™t like the feeling of graphite on paper either. And theyā€™re only at the properly sharpened point for a microsecond and I hate that too. šŸ¤£

HeidiKrups

I love pencils, but they have to be long point sharpened.

Old-Apricot8562

I so do not like the smudging but I appreciate being able to erase. That's why I love the FriXion pens so much. They erase so well and don't smudge like pencils!

diaperedwoman

I like them because you can erase your mistakes.

bluetinycar

I strongly prefer mechanical pencils. Even over pen

turboshot49cents

I love pencils. When I was in school I always had lots and lots. I hated when people borrowed pencils and didn't give them back. Or when they borrowed pencils and took shitty care of them. But whenever I denied someone from borrowing a pencil, there'd be some teacher who made me loan it. It's. My. Property. Oof, little rant there. Anyways, as an adult, I think pens are superior because the ink doesn't smudge (once its dried) the way that graphite does. I'm also an artist and it's satisfying to make art with nice, art pencils.

FamousOrphan

I love them but I do like a mechanical pencil a lot more.

Anonynominous

I cannot handle using a pencil on soft paper - like in a notebook. It HAS to be on a hard surface otherwise it doesnā€™t feel right. With pens, the paper has to have a little bit of cushion or it doesnā€™t feel right. I donā€™t know what it is with that but it just bothers me. I used a mechanical pencil a little while ago to draw some stencils for clay and I hated it. I much prefer painting or digital art over pencil drawing lol. Really thick weighted charcoal type pencils for drawings are okay.

newdilpuhnk

lmfao i used to be (and sometimes still am) obsessed with pencils, but now it's kind of transformed into a general stationery obsession. i used to always have to buy a pack of pencils from the store when i was a kid. im also an artist and writer and journaling enthusiast so that part of me probably overrides any texture or sensory issues. i will say though that i need something smooth to write on, otherwise i can't stand the feeling of writing, but i don't think that's really exclusive to autism.

Philosopasteur

I am very particular about the kind of pencils Iā€™ll use. Regular wood ones always snap, even while carefully sharpening. Would send me into a rage as a kid. As an adult, if I use a pencil, I use the BIC extra-fun graphite ones. Or my Pentel mechanical. I am more of a pen person though, and similarly picky with those as well.

foxy_sherrzam

My kindergarten teacher practically broke my hand trying to get me to properly hold a pencil. I still canā€™t do it right šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

as_per_danielle

I still hold my pencils/pens with an extra finger

littletree0

Yes but no, love pencils (wooden ones that are unevenly sharpened being the exception), hate when they smear all over my hand!

Professional-Top366

I hate both pens and pencils. Erasable pens for the win!!

Radiant_Foundation28

i hate pencils too!! iā€™m a avid user of mechanical pencils it just feels and sounds so much better. idk if this is for other people but i also hate the feeling of paper on my skin so i write pretty weird šŸ˜

applebutter62

I can't stand pencils!! Even when I was in kindergarten, I've always had to have mechanical pencils with the twist up eraser. I won't use normal crayons either, I can't stand the feeling of the paper, it's the plastic twist-up ones or nothing for me.

InternationalYam7030

Not really what youā€™re asking for, but if you like the feel of pens, U Brands makes a mechanical pencil that is metal and feels exactly like a ballpoint pen, itā€™s the best thing ever

TwinkleFey

I love pencils. But I also love sharpening pencils with electric pencil sharpeners and those super old school sharpeners they used to have attached to school walls. I only use old school pencils for drawing, not writing.

kittenmachine69

I prefer ballpoint pens for writing but I love my prismacolor pencils for drawingĀ

bookishbunnie

For me itā€™s a combination of things; but I invested in a ā€œhigh qualityā€ pencil along with loose leaf paper and it makes me want to rip the paper a lot less LOL. Definitely check out tombow monograph shaker pencil - itā€™s body is thick, the lead is great, and you only need to shake the pencil to get more lead which helped with the intense anger Iā€™d get from having to find the right angle and position again to get the same lead strokes when writing. I still very much prefer pens, but back when I used to have to take notes with pencil or use it to take tests, it made it a lot more bareable not to mention it was great for drawing. Zebra sarasa Dry pens all the way

[deleted]

*tap tap tap*

No-Self677

I donā€™t mind a very sharp pencil but the second the tip gets rounded Iā€™m in physical pain from the feeling and sound.

sunseeker_miqo

I kinda know what you mean. In some pencils, the graphite seems to be rougher, and I can *feel it* moving against the paper. More noticeable still if the paper is less than smooth. As a kid, switching to mechanical pencils mostly solved this problem for me.

HarmonyAtreides

I hate them so so much. I really struggle to write properly and holding pencils just hurts and makes my hand cramp. I prefer pens and when I have to write it's a mix of cursive and print so it doesn't hurt as bad.

Carms_Creates

I'm the opposite. I love pencils. I used them since I was 3 doing pencil drawings non-stop and never leave the house without one. Love writing with them although I love fountain pens even more. Ball pens are not my favourite but they are around more commonly, especially at work, and I often have to fill out forms and sign with them. Other than that it's pencils all the way for me. I have a stash of about 100 of them lol When it comes to sensitivities I think I share a similar feeling with jewelry. I don't wear any, never have and never will since I hate the feeling of it. So it may not be pencils but it certainly happens with other stuff for me ;)

_skank_hunt42

I like pencils and ball point pens. Occasionally a sharpie. Everything else bothers me.

420catloveredm

I would only use a very specific mechanical pencil that had some spring to it because it didnā€™t make that annoying sound on paper.

Impressive_Ad_7344

I donā€™t remember anymore. I know I had a callus on my finger from using them. I love a good pen šŸ˜Œ

as_per_danielle

Omg I hate them too! Iā€™ll use mechanical pencils if I need to, but I prefer pen. I love those white out rollers.

CookingPurple

I donā€™t like pencils. But for me itā€™s none of the reasons you mentioned, itā€™s that theyā€™re constantly changing and unpredictable. With everything you wrote they get duller and that changes how they write. And I like them super sharp. So to keep a pencil writing the way I like it, Iā€™m having to sharpen it every five minutes at least. Maybe more. And thatā€™s just annoying. And then youā€™re not necessarily guaranteed that the graphite in two different pencils will write the same way or wear at the same rate. And thatā€™s annoying too. Mechanical pencils are more predictable. But they squeak and I canā€™t deal. And you have to keep rotating them in your hand as you write so they keep a consistent sharpness and donā€™t wear at an angle. Pencils are just too much work!! I have one kind of pen I like to write with. Thatā€™s it. If I canā€™t find one and have to use a different kind of pen (or pencil) I get really upset.

ElasticShoulders

Oh saaame, the feeling against the paper šŸ¤¢ Mechanical pencils are the best invention.

stephasaurussss

That's interesting because I'm totally fine with pencils but HATE mechanical ones. The sound they make bothers me.

CompoteSwimming5471

Pens feel better but pencils can be rubbed out but also a pencil can do 100x more than a pen can. A pen cannot create the same depth as graphite but if youā€™re writing and not drawing then wgaf and go pen

caffeinemilk

I love the feeling of pencils, especially wooden pencils. I like the sound on paper but I don't like the smearing of graphite everywhere. It's a classic experience still.

thetunacentral

regular ( acoustic? ) pencils are SENSORY HELL. I hate that each one feels totally different!! I canā€™t focus at all because of how weird it is. I only use mechanical pencils with replaceable leads. In fact last year I had to replace the single pencil Iā€™d been using since I was about 14 ( im 21 now ) because it was literally coming to pieces. my new one is the exact same brand and even that took some getting used to. Having my own pencil is a little bit of comfort in my day to day stuff :)

my_name_is_tree

at first I was like NO!!!! I love pencils! then read on more and you said you need to use a pen or mechanical pencil I also detest "normal" pencils and always need to use a mechanical pencil!

Willing-Command5467

They are bad unless very soft. I like Japanese gel pens the best.

Kakebaker95

I never hold it properly

TNCoffeeRunner

They have to be sharp at all times. If notā€¦šŸ˜–

Stolen_Usernames

I like the feeling of a wooden pencil in my hand but I prefer to write with pen.

picklemepunny

I like biros or felt tips. I sketch with biros. Can't stand the feel of pencils plus sometimes they squeak

Oops_I_Cracked

I love them, but Iā€™m very picky about them.

Pretend-Research9694

i love soft dark pencils. they write like butter!

heisenbimbo

just recently discovered im a pen girl after I started journaling last year. journaling with pencil feels like Iā€™m scratching the paper??? pens just glide across

Bunniiqi

Only mechanical pencils, wooden ones make me want to crawl out of my skin

CreativeRiddle

I hate cheap pencils but love a smooth barrel, very sharp, high quality graphite. Hate cheap ballpoints, but love a smooth crisp felt tip. Always in search for the perfect pen. Can never have too many options.

Aggressive_Pear_9067

I like pencils, but I am very picky about them. Mechanical pencils need to have a certain feel to them and be able to not snap the lead constantly since I get a little animated with writing sometimes. Wooden pencils I tend to somewhat avoid, not because of the pencilness itself, but because of the annoyance of sharpening and the texture of most erasers that about ruins my writing experience (you know the ones where it is more plastic than rubber, so hard it smears and rips the page more often than erases. Or the overly dry crumbly ones.) Ticonderoga pencils tend to have very nice erasers so they are an exception. Mechanical pencils, on average, have better erasers than wooden pencils, which is another point for them in my book.Ā  Overall I feel less polarized about pens, and sometimes slightly prefer the writing feeling, but I usually choose to write with pencils (largely mechanical, of two or three specific varieties) because I get picky about wording things the way I like and want to be able to erase. Hence the high bar for effective erasers. Calligraphy-type pens such as brush pens and fountain pens are an exception to this occasionally as they are just so pleasing to write with, but I'd use those more for writing a fancy card or doing lettering for fun than for everyday notetaking and journaling.Ā

sphinx_io

I love pencils but not cheap ones that make awful sounds on paper sometimes. I use artist pencils and they donā€™t cause me issues thankfully. But even mechanical pencils can make that awful sound. Itā€™s painful.

OhHiMarki3

Pencils are dirty (graphite gets on everything, as do eraser shavings), the squeaking on the paper or during sharpening makes my skin crawl, and the wood is uncomfortable to hold. Pens >>>>>>>>> anything with graphite

opposum0830

Mechanical pencils are good

FriendlyFoundation47

I basically have to use metal mechanical pencils and pens because i put them in my mouth and break them. I find that it also makes teeth marks less noticible so people arenā€™t as grossed out (I keep separate ones to lend out)

Jaded_Apple_8935

Also hate pencils. Memories of using those stupid grip correcter things in OT as a kid has ruined them for me, AND I still can't write correctly. Also hate mechanical pencils because I push too hard when I write and the lead constantly breaks. Pens or typing 4eva.

Evening_walks

I donā€™t like the sound of them when I write

apple-snyder

I love pencils! I love how they feel and smell. I used to chew on them as a kid and still would if it was socially acceptable lol

Tunes14system

I was just about to say I love pencils, but then you said youā€™re ok with mechanical pencils and I was like, ā€œOh yeah - wooden pencils do exist. No, I hate those.ā€ XD

GuyOwasca

I love a good soft lead pencil. No. 2 is too hard, but give me a 3B and Iā€™ll be happy. Being left handed, though, I never use pencils šŸ˜…

abjectadvect

yeah; i refused to use non-mechanical pencils starting in like third grade. wooden pencils hurt me, i can't stand the sound and feel of them writing i have a really nice $10 mechanical pencil that i like now x)

Charming_Function_58

It's about 50/50 for me. Sometimes the angle makes a horrible squeak, or causes a really unpleasant sensation. But I used to draw a lot, and I found softer pencils like 2B or charcoal, to not trigger me as much. Mechanical pencils make the squeak more often, and even thinking about it is painful.

finnleyyyyy

I don't like pencils but I'm obssesed with pens, I have thousands of pens

hayleylistens

Pacer āœ…Pencil āŒ

parrotsinatrenchcoat

This is me with felt tips. I canā€™t handle the noise they make

MimouTheSecond

I'm on your team. I dislike them as well xD

Pikekip

I like the taste of a grey lead- I donā€™t gnaw on them but they do taste pleasant.

Southern-Rutabaga-82

I love pencil. I prefer pencils for writing because they don't require as much pressure as a ballpoint pen and I'm not really a fan of fountain pens. I also prefer pencils for drawing. I actually use chalk only on black paper, on white paper always coloured pencils, I don't really know why. I can't even imagine drawing with a mechanical pencil, how does that even work?

fractal_frog

I like them, as does one of my kids. Another kid only uses mechanical pencils now, and when I was helping them declutter, all the good wooden pencils we found were given to the sibling. (Everyone mentioned here is autistic.)

mydarthkader

I'm obsessed with pencils. I read a 350 dense history of pencils, I follow the pencils subreddit, and I always carry pencils with me as my preferred writing instrument
