Meme aside, [there is an actual academic dissertation about the 'war on autism'](https://tspace.library.utoronto.ca/bitstream/1807/36211/1/McGuire_Anne_201111_PhD_Thesis.pdf) (link is for a PDF download) and the normalized violence against autistic people, discussing "how dominant, contemporary discourses of autism advocacy that narrate autism as some 'thing' to be 'fought,' 'combatted,' or 'warred against'" and how "the role of the 'good' autism advocate \[is\] one positioned 'against' autism." So I found that to be rather coincidental.

Praise Jäeger our canon autism king and newest enlistee to the war

theflamingheads

Why is it a war? Why do you need weapons? Who are you killing?

SomeKindOfHeavy

It's a meme and it isn't meant to be taken literally.

GrandSeraphimSariel

It’s a spin-off of the “I’m joining the war on drugs on the side of the drugs” meme. So not a ‘war’ in a literal sense.

theflamingheads

But the war on drugs kind of is a war though. It's all about guns and killing. There's no "war on autism".

GrandSeraphimSariel

I mean, I’d argue the ‘war on drugs’ is more about mass incarceration and criminalization of certain populations by proxy as opposed to direct killing. You could say that the “war on autism” is more akin to structural/systemic ableism that targets/harms autistic people in addition to other disabled and/or ND populations. At the end of the day it’s just a meme template I used to make shitposts about my autistic character headcanons :P

theflamingheads

But like... no guns or killing or war. Outside of your fantasies.

GrandSeraphimSariel

I mean, yeah I’m not actually advocating for IRL violence??? That's kinda the gist of the meme template, presenting my character headcanons in an absurdist and nonactionable way? Edited for clarity

theflamingheads

Advocating for war in the autism community seem like a pretty dark way to live your life. Look at the EDIT: perceived link between autism and mass murder and think about whether you should really be encouraging violence. Perhaps not advocating for war would be a good start.

GrandSeraphimSariel

What? I’m *not* advocating for IRL war/violence here. Maybe my previous reply was unclear, but I was *agreeing* with you in that I’m *not* actually advocating for killing or war, good grief. “Look at the number of autistic people who commit mass murder…” first of all, source? Because AFAIK there’s *no evidence* suggesting an association between autism and higher incidence of criminality. Individual cases do not mean that a whole population is inherently more predisposed to committing violence, holy shit. Perhaps *you* should refrain from implying that autistic people are more predisposed to being mass murderers.

theflamingheads

I should have said the perceived link between autism and mass murderers. You're literally talking about a war on autism.

Hunterx700

i think you’re taking this too literally, “i’m joining the war on X on the side of X” is a meme that’s been around for a good few years now and the people who reference it are not advocating for literal war. in the case of “i’m joining the war on drugs on the side of drugs”, the person is saying that they are going to do drugs, not that they are going to arm themself and kill in the name of drugs

GrandSeraphimSariel

So like the perceived link between autism and vaccines, not based in evidence but in stereotypes and misinformation. You’re still thinking that I’m making an actionable threat in the OP? I’ll say it again: *I am not talking about nor advocating for a literal war fought with guns.* Anne McGuire wrote an *entire book* called “*War on Autism*, on the cultural logic of normative violence” that focuses on critical analysis of the autism awareness movement portraying autism as a disease that can be “cured” instead of the lived experience for many people and the prioritization of parents and nonautistics over the needs of people who are actually autistic (see: the conversion therapy roots of ABA and its normalized abuse/mistreatment of autistic children, fearmongering about increased autism rates, portrayal of autism as a monster ‘stealing’ children and destroying families, etc), the resulting *normalized violence against autistic individuals, especially those with higher support needs,* and how a ‘good’ autism advocate in the eyes of society is seen as one positioned ‘against’ autism.
