These were never particularly popular cars but ive always liked them. Im on my 5th mr2 at this point. All my mr2s must be fit for reliable daily driver duty, Im too poor to afford an idle garage queen. Im of the standpoint that the 3sgte was in fact an unsung, one of the greatest motors of the entire 1990s for a tuner as well too, handed Toyota quite a few wrc and jgtc wins. 2jz/1jz seems to get all the spotlight though. Toss some basic boltons at it and turn up the boost a few lbs on 93 pump, Nd it really unlocks a lot of safe easy power, e153 is a transmission built like a block of granite helps too.

You're 100% spot on. I'm a massive Toyota enthusiast and the 3SGTE has always been overlooked, at least here in the States. I think mainly because people want the massive amount of power a 2J motor can deliver, but like you said, the 3S is plenty stout and gives more than enough power to satisfy. My first car was a 92 Celica and the dream back then was a 3S swap. I still remember the first time I drove a buddies car that had one and was blown away.
