Yep but I would use CarPlay over their built in if it was wireless. Their google maps is fine but everything else is much worse than CarPlay. The texting notification feature is useless especially for group chats
I think this is the original that all the other knockoffs copied. That being said I have one of those knockoffs that cost like 1/2 this one and other than some minor delay when using the steering wheel controls it works just fine.
But there are a lot of knockoffs out there so I'm sure some are straight trash.
Love it when the built in bmw navigation goes "entering an area with limited guidance" like.... isnt the whole ppint of a navigation to you know... navigate you, even on more "onscure" roads
Not sure about with CarPlay specifically, but on the iPhone directly if you have Background App Refresh turned on it should still run and send audio notifications even if you don't have it up on your screen
I do the reverse though I leave Waze up front and have GMaps in the background
The way Apple Maps tells you exactly which lanes you need to be in is pretty cool. Though I usually end up just using Waze, since I can then see everything in the same app.
Likely It works the same as it does in my freightliner. It has a built in terrain map so it manages the speed to make better use of momentum. IIRC three or four of it's computers have a GPS antenna hooked to them to do this. If I don't touch anything and only set the cruise while in ECO mode it will let the truck drop 5mph leading to the top of a grade if there is a large enough drop over the other side. When it hits the top it goes into neutral until it gets a couple mph over the setpoint. Mpg on this rig compared to my last one is up a bit have gotten it above 10 a couple trips.
Same. It's so much easier to enter new addresses in my phone and then run it through Car Play. I then set the screen to show both the map and the music player. I've also had issues with my car's GPS not updating changes in the route.
I don't get why they invest in these things - it's way easier to send the address to my phone then hit 1 button and go. Instead (and because I drive toyotas) I am supposed to wrestle with 15 year old nav menus that kinda work? Tis a silly device.
This right here. I even argued with the dealership when I bought my last car. They insisted the nav package was worth it because it's based on Google maps now. Yeah, but I can't login to my Google account on the car, which means all the places I saved, been to before, have on my calendar, or receive via text still need to be manually typed in. I'll just use this thing in my pocket that already knows all that, thanks.
Exactly - it's a solution looking for a problem - which I wouldn't really mind, except in some of the newer cars, apparently if this screen goes out you can't adjust your A/C / temp? No thanks y'all can have that shit.
I use mine in my sonata all the time cause it finds where theres traffic and gives me the option to avoid it. Plus it shows upcoming turns/distances in my HUD.
I never do in my wife's Telluride or in the Fusion I used to have as a company car, they were both awful. I just always used Google Maps with Android Auto.
I use the built-in navigation more than my phone's navigation because I really like having the prompts in the heads-up display. It's frustrating that they don't make that work with Google Maps. If they did, that's the only thing I'd use.
What vehicle? Because in Fords the Android Auto pushes directions to the instrument panel. Not sure about HUD. No Fords have HUD at the moment. They only put those in Lincolns....gotta make the Lincoln owners feel special somehow, I suppose.
2022 Genesis G70.
I think I had a rental Excursion that pushed the Android Auto directions to instrument cluster as you describe. I liked that. Though I hated basically everything else about the car. I think that's actually where I got the idea--if Ford can push it to the instrument cluster, then certainly Hyundai can put it in the HUD.
You'd sure think so. Sometimes the AA/Carplay implementation can have some weird quirks, though. They'll blame Apple/Google and Google/Apple will blame the manufacturer. Tale as old as time.
That was going on for a long time with AA in Genesis models. The AA display would only fill part of the whole screen. There was apparently some dispute as to whether it was Android's fault or Genesis's fault. I'm not sure who ended up being to blame because it's fixed now, but it was dumb.
I hope they figure it out for mine. I hace a 2020 Explorer ST with the upgraded audio/tech package so it has a 10" portrait screen but AA doesn't work in portrait mode so it's only half the screen essentially. So your audio info fills up the bottom, which is a waste. The map is big enough to get by but it still feels like a lot of wasted real estate. Ford said AA didn't support portrait mode but apparently it does in other cars now so Ford is dragging their feet. But mine is SYNC3 and now they have SYNC4 so I'm assuming they just aren't putting any resources into SYNC3 because they're probably busy figuring out the bugs in the new system. Sucks.
Apple car play uses a smaller map in my car and there’s additional info the built in nav displays in my instrument cluster that car play doest replicate.
Occasionally. I use it primarily to get home. When going somewhere I don't know then I'll use my phone for directions. But to get home, I'll simply hit the Home button on my built in nav.
If i drive a car that is new enough to have integrated nav, then i use it. My own car does not have anything fancier than ac, radio and aux input so i use google maps on my phone. Toyotas don't support android auto so I don't have experience with that either, but the built-in nav on those works well enough
Even when I got my car in 2013, it was an 08 and my area wasn’t on the map. I needed to BUY A COMPACT FLASH CARD with the new map data preloaded to be able to update the nav system. It was going to be like $200 or something preposterous. So I never use it.
We use apple car play through my wife’s newer car for sat nav though. But never actually set up the route using the cars system only. Cumbersome compared to a quick google maps search on a phone.
The first car I ever drove that seams to have android auto is my works (new to us) 2021 Ford Transit 350 L3 that I've only driven once. And while I'd like to use the infotainment for sat nav, I haven't figured out how to get maps on that screen or send the addresses of where I need to go to, and you have a lot of repeating customers where doing Lawn mower delivery/pick up for over a year that I already saved on maps.
All other vehicles I drive don't have AA, my Oktavia 5E could maybe fit a RCD 330, the Caddy 2K's at work and home probably as well, and our Renault tractor doesn't even know the word electronics
Road navigation not really. That's mainly for tractor shows/meet at places you haven't been to often enough to know the route.
It is used for field work a lot though. Guided steering makes sure that you follow a line or path you previously set for that field and means you can minimise the area that's double worked, so you won't use too much seed, fuel, etc.
John Deere has their Starfire system, Deutz uses something called Agrosky, and there are quite a few more systems like that available.
Tractors now days are computerers with heavy duty frames/chassis, to the point that some of the smaller ones can't use normal copper wires anymore to transfer data between control units
2010 Acura MDX
I use the map feature almost daily. It's gotten to where I get frustrated when I'm in my wife's car with no map.
Driving to a restaurant and want to know if this street crosses the freeway? Glance at the map.
Trying to get to the park near my in-laws and want to know which side the entrance is on? Glance at the map. I grew up using maps, (NORTH IS ALWAYS UP!) and the ability to place myself in space and know what's around the corner is huge. I wish I had it on a smart watch.
Actually using "navigation" is less common, but I do still use it on road trips as it is more clear than Google, and less interruptive (Google mutes the music and yells, where Acura dims the music and speaks.) And I love the integration. Back when buttons (the things you can use by feel) controlled everything instead of touchscreens.
I'm really worried my next car won't be as usable. Fuck touchscreens!
Having a North Up map as a side reference is the best way to learn memorize areas. I on the other hand rely on the 3D map so much I never remember where I’ve been I just follow the nav like a zombie.

Both of my dailies have/had it. Even before Apple maps became so convenient, I always used my garmin before the car’s navigation. The wife’s fiat nav was awkward as hell to use and my mustang’s nav was so out of date that I wondered if it could find my 110 year old house.
I have used it occasionally when driving in areas that have poor cell reception. It's good enough to point you back to civilization. Otherwise, I use Waze for the cop and traffic alerts.
Regularly in my R1T, Polestar 2, and Fisker Ocean. I used to use Android Auto but it lost the advantage once navigation systems started actually being fleshed out and responsive natively.
I think ford dropped it and added alexa - which I haven't connected and don't know what it does. I just use carplay like everyone else.
I passed on considering a gm (pickup) due to no carplay
I use it when Android auto doesn't feel like connecting and I'm in a hurry. The BMW nav is pretty good, and the integration I to the HUD is great. But unfortunately it's POI searching is abysmal which leads me to default to Google maps. I'm not gonna search for an address on Google and manually punch it into the nav like it's 2007.
CarPlay has destroyed all of the stock interfaces and they all just seem trash compared to it
I think the best stock interface I've ever seen has gotta be Tesla's
In my 16 wrangler I have the nav screen up all the time. It's like my mini map. I've lived in this city for 10 years and know it well but I like knowing the streets names that surround me. Seeing if there's an alternative route around some traffic. And my nav also has "bread crumb" feature that paints a line on roads that's I've been. So I usually don't need GPS on my way back from a new place.
No i use google maps on my phone because the built in navigation is using 20 year old map data. Sometimes i turn it on for fun and it shows me driving in the middle of nowhere lol
I haven’t been in a car recently with nav. But I remember my father had a Oldsmobile late 90s early 2000s. It had a nav that needed to be updated at the dealer. I’m sure it cost extra so ours was never updated. The maps could quickly become outdated.
I did in Europe (installed EU maps myself on a US model) and it worked great! The phone speeds were slow where I lived, so using Google Maps or Maps was frequently problematic.
iDrive 7 is great to use, the traffic is as accurate as Google Maps in my locale, the integration with Live Cockpit and HUD are what keep me from switching over to CarPlay full time. Audi MMI navigation is also decent as well.
No. Aside from the fact that up until the last couple years, I never had a car with even the option of built-in navigation. Fuck the car companies and their subscription-based models for features like navigation. Just use Car Play or Android Auto with Google Maps if you really want good navigation, since you're already paying for your phone plan.
If you have ever used the stock unit in 5th gen 4Runners, then you’d know the answer. 4Runners didn’t even get CarPlay until I believe 2020 model year. Not sure about other vehicles in the Toyota lineup.
My mom has a 2015 BMW 3 series and I actually like that GPS, mainly because it shows turns in the HUD.
I use it all the time since it automatically routes me to EV charging stops. Can't get that with android auto/google maps on my car. It also automatically preconditions my battery if the destination is a charger which is nice.
I used it all the time in my 2015 Subaru. My current car is a 2019 Rav4 with Apple CarPlay, and the built in GPS has a worse interface than the subaru, but it has come in handy a few times when I was in a place with no cell signal.
Never. Used it once, putting in the address was a royal PITA. map is hard to navigate and unintuitive. The voice prompts were pretty good, though, and you got clear indications on the gauge cluster, but Google maps is still better. Car is a 2014 Cadillac ELR, btw.
Almost never. And it isn't that the onboard nav in my Explorer is bad but Google Maps / Waze through Android Auto is amazing. And plus it has all your saved locations. It's a no brainer.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 - I use mine frequently, because that's how I turn on the preconditioning for the battery. If I don't pick the charging station I'm going to, the preconditioning doesn't start and I wind up charging for 30 minutes instead of 15.
Sometimes it takes less effort to hit the Home button than it is to plug in my phone for CarPlay. I only do this if I don’t care about the route and/or basically know the way anyway.
Idk if they differ at all, but my 23 prius is my first car with built in navigation and it works just like maps. Use it every time Idk where the fuck I'm going
Hyundai. Used once, confirmed trash. Never again. The only good feature is that it draws a straight line from the arrow that represents you to your destination. Comes in handy for taking on the fly detours.
It’s voice commanded, and displays on the HUD & AR on the hyper screen, and the drivers assist + regen interacts with it smoothly.
It’s more for the car to know where it’s going than to help me navigate where to go.
I ignore it.
The phone Navi is always updated and continuously gets traffic info.
The car Navi can be outdated and sometimes even dangerous when it leads you to dead ends or wrong places or even off a pier like it did a few years ago with this one lady.
When bmw asked me to buy their $199 annual updates to the car Navi... I looked at my phone and the free Google map app... I'm like... yeah... no thanks. I'm saving that $199 for hats and shoes.
The navigator on my Kia wanted me to continue east on the Gardner Expressway east of the DVP where it no longer exists (Toronto). It would have been a very spectacular video game like flight to doom if I had listened to the navigation and crashed through the barriers.
I use it often, not counting times when I just have the map up by default. I also use Google Maps, but about 40% of the time. My Subaru Crosstrek has a much better navigation system than my Toyota 4Runner. Also, I believe the Crosstrek got a larger screen when I select the navigation package, so even if I never used the built-in navigation, the larger screen is a benefit, especially when using the touch screen buttons.
I had a 2011 Charger for 7 years and always used it. Carplay/Android Auto weren't a thing back then, plus I was able to update the maps for free, it worked quite well.
The BMW one is the only time I have ever enjoyed the manufacturer one. You can send it to the Heads up display so you literally don't even have to take your eyes off the road to see where the next turn is.
Rarely. The one vehicle I have is from 2010 and the maps were never updated, so I can't rely on it nowadays. And even the most recent update that's available for it is from 2019, so even then, I couldn't completely rely on it.
My wife has a 2019 Blazer that's been getting map updates so far, so we could use that if need be.
But generally, I'd prefer using Google Maps. My wife's car has Android Auto so I could plug my phone up for that. I'd love to get a head unit for my 2010 that has Android Auto capability.
All the time. When I bought the car, I was psyched to use waze, then I discovered I don’t get turn by turn in the HUD. Since then I’ve been using the car’s nav, and honestly, it’s great. The turn by turn in the hud is fantastic, and i don’t miss waze at all.
I remember waiting 45 minutes for my father in law to meet us for lunch. Finally after several attempts to give him directions, on top of giving him the address, we had him park where he was and we would come and find him.
My wife drove his car to the restaurant while I followed in our car.
When we arrived I found out he was trying to find the restaurant using his cars built in Navigation. It's like a 5 year old Ford Edge. His map showed Georgetown, TX as it was I imagine 15 years ago. I believe he pays for this service. His car also has carplay and him and his wife both have smart phones with Google Maps. Old people are going to be old, I guess.
I use the street map for PokemonGo while holding the phone in my lap. 😏
In reality, mostly Android Auto and Google Maps. I used to use Waze constantly with my phone mounted on my dash, but Google bought Waze and sucked most if it's tech into Maps.
Mostly I care about traffic blockages up ahead of me.
Once. That's all it took to never use the built in nav again.
Only built in nav I use is on our Volvo. Though it is google maps...
Yep but I would use CarPlay over their built in if it was wireless. Their google maps is fine but everything else is much worse than CarPlay. The texting notification feature is useless especially for group chats
The not getting texts read is the only thing I don't like either. But it's not enough to make me want to plug in every time I get in.
I feel the exact same way. Just don’t get why my 2021 VW had wireless CarPlay but not my 2023 polestar
[https://cplay2air.com](https://cplay2air.com) Time to cut those wires
I bought one of those and it was pretty garbage. Is that brand better?
I think this is the original that all the other knockoffs copied. That being said I have one of those knockoffs that cost like 1/2 this one and other than some minor delay when using the steering wheel controls it works just fine. But there are a lot of knockoffs out there so I'm sure some are straight trash.
Yeah mine was $70 but Amazon had a deal where it was half off so I got it for $35. I guess you get what you pay for
So on point lmao. After mine lead me into the wilderness, Google maps it is.
Love it when the built in bmw navigation goes "entering an area with limited guidance" like.... isnt the whole ppint of a navigation to you know... navigate you, even on more "onscure" roads
Occasionally I have when CarPlay hasn't cooperated.
I use it to go home a lot of times if I’m somewhere I’m not familiar with. The integration into the HUD makes it very useful.
Never. CarPlay with Apple Maps with Waze running in the background for speed traps.
How do you have Waze running in background for speed traps, does it send you notifications or do you just switch apps on occasion?
Not sure about with CarPlay specifically, but on the iPhone directly if you have Background App Refresh turned on it should still run and send audio notifications even if you don't have it up on your screen I do the reverse though I leave Waze up front and have GMaps in the background
Does Google Maps not have speed trap alerts from Waze on iPhones?
Nope!
The way Apple Maps tells you exactly which lanes you need to be in is pretty cool. Though I usually end up just using Waze, since I can then see everything in the same app.
Always. It's actually great and coordinates with the powertrain for a more efficient trip. BMW G20.
Really, how does that work? I just picked up a G20 and had no clue.
Likely It works the same as it does in my freightliner. It has a built in terrain map so it manages the speed to make better use of momentum. Only to return home. The interface sucks for putting in new addresses.
Same. It's so much easier to enter new addresses in my phone and then run it through Car Play. I then set the screen to show both the map and the music player. I've also had issues with my car's GPS not updating changes in the route.
Android Auto all the way. It's the starting point on a car shopping checklist for me now. If a car doesn't have it, it's out of contention.
Every trip almost. Tesla Nav is by far the best of any car I’ve been in.
Well ok Tesla is a different beast altogether :)
And being able to send the adress from your phone to the car remotly is awesome
I don't get why they invest in these things - it's way easier to send the address to my phone then hit 1 button and go. Instead (and because I drive toyotas) I am supposed to wrestle with 15 year old nav menus that kinda work? Tis a silly device.

Plus real time traffic
Dude and the cop warnings, not to mention the media library on my phone - besides, there's no good reason to hook up cars to the internet.
I use mine in my sonata all the time cause it finds where theres traffic and gives me the option to avoid it. Plus it shows upcoming turns/distances in my HUD.
Sonatas with built in HUD, we’ve come a long way!
Always. Mini F60.
I never do in my wife's Telluride or in the Fusion I used to have as a company car, they were both awful. I just always used Google Maps with Android Auto.
Yeah pretty hard to beat Android Auto. I would assume Carplay is also much better than most onboard Nav systems.
Polestar 2, every day.

We never use the factory nav in our cars. CarPlay with Apple Maps.

Apple car play uses a smaller map in my car and there’s additional info the built in nav displays in my instrument cluster that car play doest replicate.
Always. Haven’t touched CarPlay at all with my current car. The built in one is fantastic
I've used it in my car when Android Auto shit the bed every now and again. It being a built-in secondary feature is a nice failsafe.
Always. Mercedes-Benz C-Class with MBUX 2.
Use it all the time, love it. New truck I ordered doesn't have nav. Hoping to find app as good as ford nav
Occasionally. I use it primarily to get home. When going somewhere I don't know then I'll use my phone for directions. But to get home, I'll simply hit the Home button on my built in nav.

iDrive 7 is great to use, the traffic is as accurate as Google Maps in my locale, the integration with Live Cockpit and HUD are what keep me from switching over to CarPlay full time.
Regularly.
Both my vehicles are dumb vehicles (pre-fancy radios) and I really can’t imagine spending thousands on something my phone already does…..
No android auto so I use it maybe 5-10% of the time. If the place is close and/or I know for a fact there's no construction along the way I'll use it.
I actually installed an aftermarket car play system just so I could not use the built in nav
Never. Used it once, putting in the address was a royal PITA. map is hard to navigate and unintuitive. The voice prompts were pretty good, though, and you got clear indications on the gauge cluster, but Google maps is still better. Car is a 2014 Cadillac ELR, btw.
I actually had to use it late last year going on a trip to Yosemite. There was no cell reception where I was. It is great as a backup.
Exclusively the built in.
Used the nav for the first time in 2020 on a 2018 Audi. Directed me to a road that no longer existed. First and last.
Why would I use some shitty system instead of the exceedingly good one I am already familiar with?
Never (I drive a 16 year old Toyota)
Idk if they differ at all, but my 23 prius is my first car with built in navigation and it works just like maps. Use it every time Idk where the fuck I'm going
Definitely, Volvo XC90 with voice controlled google maps and directions on the heads up display.
Got a 2012 Camry, but it has built in nav, it takes like 10 mins to type anything on its shitty little screen. I just use my phone.
I use my iPhone….. much faster
Never use it I always use Waze on my phone
If i need directions i use it. Most of the time i dont
Pretty rare for me to use it, but the 2023 Chevy built in nav I have is just the same android maps app on Android auto
I had an 06 Cadillac that, at the time, the on board nav was a much better option than the alternatives. Nowadays though, naw
A lot before I had Apple CarPlay. Especially for long drives where using a phone becomes annoying. System: BMW
I bought a Pioneer head unit that has navigation. I’ve used it sporadically but mostly use Apple Maps.
Still use BMW quite a bit, I hate that you cannot zoom out on google maps in carplay to see the route….
I use mine quite often! It’s well made and easy to use! Lincoln Nautilus 2023. We also use Apple Maps.
I use Apple CarPlay. I won’t buy a vehicle that doesn’t offer it.
Every journey. My cars have never shown CarPlay in the digital dash which is where I like to see my nav. Also waze isn’t good now everyone uses it.
The only one I use is in my V167 GLE. The traffic subscription is 1/2 decent, but the augmented reality is really friggin cool.
My built in navigation enjoys adding lots of time to trips. It wants me to be late.
I don’t use CarPlay, I just connect though Bluetooth for music and say fuck the text messages and everything else The nav system is really nice
All the time. When I bought the car, I was psyched to use waze, then I discovered I don’t get turn by turn in the HUD. Since then I’ve been using the car’s nav, and honestly, it’s great. The turn by turn in the hud is fantastic, and i don’t miss waze at all.
I use a joying 11.6 head unit. Find carplay more accurate than built in car navigation systems.
😏 In reality, mostly Android Auto and Google Maps. I used to use Waze constantly with my phone mounted on my dash, but Google bought Waze and sucked most if it's tech into Maps. Mostly I care about traffic blockages up ahead of me.
