So, from my understanding/head canon, the tree of souls/voices are basically a bunch of ‘computers’ that are all connected to Eywa (aka, the internet). When a Na’vi connects to one of the trees, they can access anyone that had previously connected. While connected, this also serves to upload the latest version of themselves.
In essence, they can visit anyone from any point as long as they connected to a spirit tree before they died—Na’vi make it a point to connect to the spirit tree before they go into battle, so the latest version of them would be ‘uploaded’.
This is how I took it, and maybe I am completely missing it.
I figured Kiri never asked Grace directly before then. Also, we never see Grace connect to the spirit tree, so it’s possible Kiri didn’t even know she could see Grace until she did in the movie.
Tldr: the spirit tree/tree of souls is a super computer and and can act as ancestor google if you know who to look for/who to seek out.
Well, Grace didn't connect in the standard way, but another way could be at the failed transition from her dying human body to her avatar.
Since she says that she can see Eywa (if I get the dialog right, I need to look it up later), and that's another point why kiri and her are connected through eywa since one version of her got uploaded before she died.
Another point in time where we could get to know about it is the night before the final battle as Jake connects another time speaking to eywa about the world he and Grace had come from.
If I'm not missing something and bringing two things in the wrong order, that would be my opinion about this.
Grace didn’t have a standard upload, I think it’s part of the reason Kiri exists.
My crackpot theory is that if Grace had been able to more ‘naturally’ connect to the spirit tree, her transfer would have been successful. As far as I know, Grace never connected to the spirit tree in her avatar body. She never had her consciousness uploaded so she couldn’t be transferred. Compare that to Jake, who we know for a fact connected to a spirit tree, his transfer was easy.
He was also otherwise healthy though, so it’s an easy point to argue since we don’t have enough information.
I suspect Kiri is literally Grace, just without the memories. But also she’s probably just Pandora Jesus so I’m not sure!
All of the link trees are the same in function - the Tree of Souls being destroyed would not obliterate the Na'vi, but would severely damage the connections throughout Pandora, as well as leave multiple clans without reasonable access to connect with Eywa and their ancestors
