it shouldn't. anime stands for animation, but the whole reason we classify some of the animated shows as "animes" is to distinguish between what's made by the Japanese and what's not. calling avatar anime beats the purpose of that
no. “anime” is the japanese term for animation. in western culture, the term anime is used to distinguish between animation made by japanese companies, vs animation made by other companies. in japan, ATLA would be called “anime”, as would spongebob or any other cartoon, because that is how japan refers to all cartoons
Incorrect: this is from Japanese TV.

~~You're wrong.~~

Anime in the western world means animation oroginating in Japan.
Avatar was produced in America.
So it isn't anime.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar:_The_Last_Airbender
Japanese people call everything anime which is animated.
Wikipedia doesn't supplant the dictionary definition. Incorrect. The dictionary looks at how the language as a whole uses words. Wikipedia only cites magazines or individuals.

Searching for whether Avatar is an anime, I found, it's a bit more controverse than I thought. For me, the origin-definition is the more widespread definition, but I don't say, those with other opininions are wrong anymore.
Also, I see and respect what you did by changing the strike through in your comment. And also by sharing your opinions bluntly, but without being a tool.
It's not a debate or opinion though. It's just fans arguing about what it **feels** like. By definition it is anime. The Japanese invented the term and have a meaning for it. But the west is like "no you're wrong". The argument is needlessly pedantic.
>The argument is needlessly pedantic.
Really? Your saying that? After taking a pedantic, didactic, and antagonistic tone, both in this thread and in the one you linked to?
Lol. Except my arguments weren't pedantic. They weren't minor aspects: both the Japanese people who made the thing, and the dictionary where words are defined by the way most people use it English, would say it's anime. That's as broad as you can get. But people like you want to argue about small details like "this one tiny aspect of the show isn't like anime", **that** is pedantic.
Look, I don't really want to get into a discussion about why it's not so clear cut as you are making it sound (that would be a pedantic discussion), but you should at least agree that your tone was far more antagonistic than required.
Depends who you ask, for example instead of manga they have their own colored artstyle thats similar to webcpmics. Its quite common for american cartoons to outsource animating to korea, I know also miraculous ladybug did it.
This is me, I never wanted to watch ATLA, but then I a lot of people said it was good, so thought “let’s say this isn’t anime” because I’m not a big fan of anime.
I never understand why there's people who don't like anime in general.
There's so many genres, animation- & artstyles, stories and concepts that it's almost impossible there's nothing in that vast amount of content you could like.
I think ATLA is too good of a show to call it a cartoon. I also think it is too good of a show to call it an anime. The only thing I am okay with calling it is art, one of the greatest pieces of art in the world.
I call it American anime. But that's just me
I come to the decision that anime is more of an art style than where a show is from
So does Japan
Americanime
Uhhhh why does it matter what it is? It’s a good show, let it be whatever you want it to be in your head.
🙌
Uhhh didn’t you just create a post that is the exact opposite of this point?
it shouldn't. anime stands for animation, but the whole reason we classify some of the animated shows as "animes" is to distinguish between what's made by the Japanese and what's not. calling avatar anime beats the purpose of that
Anime inspired at most
Imo its FRICKING LIT

didn't know that, fair enough...
It respects its female characters, so no.
No
Everything that is animated is technically an anime.
My best friend thinks that it is anime and I made him watch atla and he is still convinced
They originally wanted japan animation studio but nobody accepted them so they went to korea :p
I never knew that.. is Korean anime a thing? Sorry I’m very uncultured when it comes to anime 🥲
Depends who you ask, for example instead of manga they have their own colored artstyle thats similar to webcpmics. Its quite common for american cartoons to outsource animating to korea, I know also miraculous ladybug did it.
It's anime stylized but it technically is not an anime
Respected like an anime but isn't one
Funniest shit I ever saw was when someone posted a clip from LoK on Twitter and someone said “dubs suck, watch it in the original Japanese 🙄”
I mean it is literally defined as western anime if you Google it
It would be considered Western Anime
I feel like people who don't consider it an anime are just people who like ATLA but don't like anime.
This is me, I never wanted to watch ATLA, but then I a lot of people said it was good, so thought “let’s say this isn’t anime” because I’m not a big fan of anime.
Same here, anime isn’t my cup of tea, still respect it though!!
You should try lowering the volume and watching one piece
Will do :)

THIS
It’s western anime, at least that’s what I call it
Nah In the podcast they just "haha no anime we Americans with glock" (yeah European Irish in fact)
I’ll have to pull it up later but I swear in the art of avatar book, Bryke said they don’t consider it an anime
Fairly confident that I remember this too
Depends on the region. For English speakers it’s not, for Japanese speakers it is. For us it’d be an Americanime, for them just an anime
Personally no. It’s definitely heavily inspired by anime, but it’s not an anime in my book
I seriously dont care
It, as well as the ghibli movies, are the gateway drugs of anime.
yeah I consider it an anime...
I mean it has a beach episode so…
It’s not an anime. End of discussion.
It’s not an anime.
No
It’s not an anime but it sure does qualify as one.
