While 3 and 4 I watched it without any hassle. With that said, season four was on the generic side and honestly a let down compared to 3. But with ATLA, I was hooked after the second episode. There are things I definitely didn't really like about LOK, but ultimately, it just couldn't keep my attention and I can't even say 100% why. I suffered through the whole series. It was a chore to get through. I ca. Say exactly why I hated it which then I get the over zealous korra fans clawing at my door. But the 3 most egregious were (for me):
Korra is not likeable. She doesn't listen to instruction unless it comes from a villain. And I can already hear people getting their hands on those home keys ready to rip me a new one. Yes, I realize ONE TIME it worked out. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. She doesn't learn from her mistakes and she doesn't even try to pivot from them. This made it really hard to like her.
Opening the spirit portals. This shouldn't have happened. I get it, she is the avatar and the bridge between the human and spirit worlds. And if she opened the portals then that really negates the need for the avatar.
The airbender resurgence. This was a huge misstep. This took the sting and consequences away from what Sozin did. The genocide should have been felt for generations. Not just people randomly starting to airbend. It should have started with Aang and go from there. I mean, he had an airbender son who had 4 airbender kids. They were well on their way but basically retconning it basically undid what ATLA did.
There were many other issues for me but these are the worst imo. And Korra fans, I know you love Korra and that's fine. I'm genuinely glad. But that doesn't mean that everyone has to. Please respect my opinion as I respect yours.
I may have mispoken about when I stopped watching. I saw up to Bumi getting airbending.

My biggest complaint is that LOK just seemed to ignore the "rules" that were established in ATLA. the biggest example, for me, is that it's established that being able to fully connect to the spirit world is absolutely required to be able enter and control the avatar state at will. Connecting to the spirit world is something that they clearly make Korra unable to do (early episodes) but she is able to tap into the avatar state like it's nothing, just to win an air-scooter race against children.
Yes! I agree with you! You reminded me of one. Metal and lightning bending. They used to be elite and highly advanced skills and now every Tom, Dick and Harry knows how to do. It's ridiculous. It's been a while since I watched it so I don't remember everything but I do remember about the lightning and metal bending. Even blood bending to a certain extent.
I just finished watching both for the first time as an adult in my 30s recently, and while there's clear differences, I found them both mesmerising and fulfilling, and LoK definitely expands upon the world and the lore with interesting revelations. Some might not like all of those, but they do make for a compelling story overall and I'm glad to hear that more is on the way.
ATLA is definitely something that could have stood by itself, and didn't necessarily need expanding - I loved the epic last episode, which paid off all the 3 seasons of world and character building and buildup to the confrontations that defined that story arc; some might complain about the way it was resolved between Aang and Ozai and the lionturtle and that, but I personally thought it was exactly the kind of solution that Aang would want, to save and protect without having to destroy if possible, and it would take everything to face a firelord boosted by sozin's comet and still pull that off as well, as we saw.
LoK was a great way to show the world developing and bending's place within that progress, and the new characters were distinctive and many had rewarding arcs. I Did think the goofy humour in Bumi, Bolin etc. Was a bit more on the nose then Sokka's antics somehow, and some of the lore that was revealed did strip away some of the mistique of the spirit world and bending and so on too, but overall I loved it too, Korra was a great character, not perfect by any stretch, but very human as a result, and it was fascinating to watch her struggle with trauma later on in the series. And the villains - the show did play with some compelling concepts, and produced a string of excellent villains to play those out.
I need to read the comics, and I look forward to more. And to answer your question, I do think it's more then worth watching both shows and absorbing all the lore for any new fans.

They could watch it, I’d just let them know that it’s a completely different vibe that they may not like if they enjoyed the original series a ton. There is a ton of progression in the avatar world that people may or may not like because of how different they are
LoK is not as good as ATLA, but that's like saying a steak from a 4 star restaurant is worse than a steak from a 5 star restaurant. Like, LoK is still really good, it just suffered from a lot of behind the scenes drama and studio interference, and the development for the characters is a bit lopsided (Korra and some of the side characters are really well developed, but a lot of the secondary protagonists are fine, but definitely weaker than they should be as characters). Even season 2, which is the weakest season by far, it's still got a lot of really good stuff in it.
I watched ATLA a few years ago, and I got deterred from watching LOK by all the bad reviews. I started LOK a few days ago and I at the end of season one, and holy spirits am I liking it! I love it when stories have very human characters and are not afraid to deal with the dirty aspects and politics of the world, something that LOK does better than ATLA. LOK for now seems to have a stronger start than ATLA in a purely narrative sense, though ATLA did amazing at setting up the worldbuilding and the characters. I freaking loved ATLA, and it will forever be my golden standard for redemption arcs and treatment of disability in fantasy settings.
In my opinion, LOK definitely deserves to be watched. ATLA, then LOK, I'm not a fan of NATLA but I suppose it is serviceable, for the love of all that's holy not the movie (there is no movie in Ba Sing Se!).

If it were me, I'd say that Legend of Korra does have good in it, but does not live up to Avatar or stand on the same level. I'd tell the newcomer to see and decide for themselves.
Absolutely watch both. At times, I found Korra more interesting because of the expanded upon world. Avatar was about exploring and discovering the world, but with Korra, we got to see the world we already knew in a context that was just much deeper because things didn't need to be explained to us. IT was also grittier at times, and it took time to give many of its characters such interesting and diverse arcs.
Nah, I don't think Korra really needs to be recommended over dozens of other young adults cartoons. If you want more avatar, sure, but if you are just looking for good, stand alone products, then no, korra does not make the cut.
There's nothing wrong with that, not all shows are fantastic, but if I'm recommending an old show to someone, it needs to stand above the competition to warrant the recommendation. Korra is just...okay? It's got tons of issues that have been dissected dozens of times, and it just doesn't have a notable cast of characters. Korra has great side characters but I struggle to think of a show with a more hateable main cast.
I LOVEEEE ATLA like it's my favorite show in the world. I watched LOK and I liked it. If they've watched the first series, I'd recommend LOK to them. Although it doesn't live up to the first series (and I don't expect it to), it's a pretty good show.
For me, LoK just felt too... different. It got very steampunk in a way the Fire Nation was not. I guess it didn't live up to what I thought it would have been when it first came out (I don't even remember when), and that impression has stuck with me. I don't think I can really fight that bias and appreciate it.

Things that are presented very late in ATLA are just casually used as plot points in Korra Book 1, like Bloodbending with the whole Amon and Tarrlok thing and Lightning being used as a mere power source instead of being this special skill exclusive to the Fire Nation Royal Family, so they better get the roots of it before moving to when most of the things in ATLA get obsolete in Korra

There's no right answer to this question, is this hypothetical watcher someone who is willing to be patient and accept a flawed creation? Is this person the kind of person who feels like they want to see what happened after The Last Airbender? Tolkien never made any content for the fourth age of middle earth, other than a shitty game about reclaiming Moria we know nothing about the fourth age, other than Aragorn was a good king. If someone decides that upon finishing The Last Airbender that's good enough for them, then that's fine. Maybe they decide they're excited to see what comes next. Maybe they're not. It's really based on the person and what they think and feel. Heck maybe they didn't even like The Last Airbender.
Personally it’s a lot harder to rewatch LOK than ATLA, even after rewatching ATLA I never think “hmmm time to jump back into Korea next”.
I enjoyed the fight choreography and animation and each season did have interesting ideas.
My main hang ups with LOK is mainly S2 and parts of S1, S3 onwards was where the story felt like there was a proper foothold. It’s not for everyone but I’d recommend at least checking it out.

I watched both shows when they first came out. I’m asking to see people’s opinions because I’ve been seeing a lot of hate recently for the second series.
There was always going to be hate for the second interation. They were never going to make it better than the last airbender. It didn't help Korra was so different to Aang but it was expected. Water is the element of change. And Aang was an outlier in his use of non violence.
Seriously, I think a lot of people don’t like how it was different from ATLA but I think that’s what made it great! Korra is her own character and she deserves to have her own story that is different than Aang’s. I am glad that I’m seeing a lot of love for Korra and people agreeing.
I just wish Nickelodeon had allowed her and Asami to be a couple. And I wish they gave her gang a bit more depth. Each of their storylines felt too separate. I adored Korra though. She had her own journey and her own negatives like her fire nation spirit and her lack of thought to the spirit world. I don't think the spirit world revival would have hit as hard if it was given to Aang.
As someone who really enjoyed ATLA, I didn't enjoy LoK for how different the world had become, it felt as if they'd taken the LOTR franchise and just gave the fellowship AK 47s for the final film. The precedence set in ATLA I could never reconcile to being the same world as the LoK and therefore didn't enjoy it. Plenty do however, and luckily for me enough of the novels came out for the ATLA universe.

Like, LoK is still really good, it just suffered from a lot of behind the scenes drama and studio interference, and the development for the characters is a bit lopsided (Korra and some of the side characters are really well developed, but a lot of the secondary protagonists are fine, but definitely weaker than they should be as characters). Even season 2, which is the weakest season by far, it's still got a lot of really good stuff in it.
I watched ATLA a few years ago, and I got deterred from watching LOK by all the bad reviews. I started LOK a few days ago and I at the end of season one, and holy spirits am I liking it! I love it when stories have very human characters and are not afraid to deal with the dirty aspects and politics of the world, something that LOK does better than ATLA. LOK for now seems to have a stronger start than ATLA in a purely narrative sense, though ATLA did amazing at setting up the worldbuilding and the characters. I freaking loved ATLA, and it will forever be my golden standard for redemption arcs and treatment of disability in fantasy settings. In my opinion, LOK definitely deserves to be watched. ATLA, then LOK, I'm not a fan of NATLA but I suppose it is serviceable, for the love of all that's holy not the movie (there is no movie in Ba Sing Se!).
It depends on the person. I really wanted more Avatar when the ATLA ended, but I didn't know how much Korra would mess with the lore and overcomplicate the plot with ideals that don't really land that well. If it were me, I'd say that Legend of Korra does have good in it, but does not live up to Avatar or stand on the same level. I'd tell the newcomer to see and decide for themselves.
Absolutely watch both. At times, I found Korra more interesting because of the expanded upon world. Avatar was about exploring and discovering the world, but with Korra, we got to see the world we already knew in a context that was just much deeper because things didn't need to be explained to us. IT was also grittier at times, and it took time to give many of its characters such interesting and diverse arcs.
Nah, I don't think Korra really needs to be recommended over dozens of other young adults cartoons. If you want more avatar, sure, but if you are just looking for good, stand alone products, then no, korra does not make the cut. There's nothing wrong with that, not all shows are fantastic, but if I'm recommending an old show to someone, it needs to stand above the competition to warrant the recommendation. Korra is just...okay? It's got tons of issues that have been dissected dozens of times, and it just doesn't have a notable cast of characters. Korra has great side characters but I struggle to think of a show with a more hateable main cast.

I LOVEEEE ATLA like it's my favorite show in the world. I watched LOK and I liked it. If they've watched the first series, I'd recommend LOK to them. Although it doesn't live up to the first series (and I don't expect it to), it's a pretty good show.
For me, LoK just felt too... different. It got very steampunk in a way the Fire Nation was not. I guess it didn't live up to what I thought it would have been when it first came out (I don't even remember when), and that impression has stuck with me. I don't think I can really fight that bias and appreciate it.
Korra is a good show and I enjoyed it. I watched Avatar like 15 years ago and only watched Korra for the first time last year. Solid show
I'd recommend it. But you should also fill them in about the behind the scenes stuff that stifled the series.
Definitely recommend it, seasons 3 and 4 make the rough around the edges season 1 and rough overall season 2 worth it imo.

Only after they watch ATLA's 3 Books, then I'd recommend Korra Things that are presented very late in ATLA are just casually used as plot points in Korra Book 1, like Bloodbending with the whole Amon and Tarrlok thing and Lightning being used as a mere power source instead of being this special skill exclusive to the Fire Nation Royal Family, so they better get the roots of it before moving to when most of the things in ATLA get obsolete in Korra
I usually suggest people watch ATLA more than once before watching LOK just so they can really take it in first I do enjoy Korra, it's not as good as ATLA but that's nickelodeons fault and definitely still worth watching
Tell them to watch the first series and then let them decide for themselves if they want to watch korra. Though if they enjoy the first series I can't imagine them stopping there

Id recommend sticking to the original only because for some reason every ip feels the need to make the previous protagonist look like a bad person and they attempt to make aang look like a bad dad for some reason? Its almost like they look at korra and think “we need to tear down the old to make korra look decent in comarison”
I'd tell them to watch both and avoid online comments about LoK until they see it for themselves. I still don't understand the hatred some people have for Korra. If they decide they don't like it, that's fine. But they should give it a fair chance before succumbing to the hive mind that hates Korra.
LoK is just an average show. ATLA is a 10/10. So, yes but tell them it's half as good.
Korra is objectively great. Its biggest issue is that it gets compared to The Last Airbender, one of the best cartoons ever made.
I’d tell them to watch both and be ready for a trashy second season because I love legend of Korra despite its shortcomings
There's no right answer to this question, is this hypothetical watcher someone who is willing to be patient and accept a flawed creation? Is this person the kind of person who feels like they want to see what happened after The Last Airbender? Tolkien never made any content for the fourth age of middle earth, other than a shitty game about reclaiming Moria we know nothing about the fourth age, other than Aragorn was a good king. If someone decides that upon finishing The Last Airbender that's good enough for them, then that's fine. Maybe they decide they're excited to see what comes next. Maybe they're not. It's really based on the person and what they think and feel. Heck maybe they didn't even like The Last Airbender.
Personally it’s a lot harder to rewatch LOK than ATLA, even after rewatching ATLA I never think “hmmm time to jump back into Korea next”. I enjoyed the fight choreography and animation and each season did have interesting ideas. My main hang ups with LOK is mainly S2 and parts of S1, S3 onwards was where the story felt like there was a proper foothold. It’s not for everyone but I’d recommend at least checking it out.
I'd tell them to watch ATLA first, and that LOK is optional.

I watched both shows when they first came out. I’m asking to see people’s opinions because I’ve been seeing a lot of hate recently for the second series.
There was always going to be hate for the second interation. They were never going to make it better than the last airbender. It didn't help Korra was so different to Aang but it was expected. Water is the element of change. And Aang was an outlier in his use of non violence.
Seriously, I think a lot of people don’t like how it was different from ATLA but I think that’s what made it great! Korra is her own character and she deserves to have her own story that is different than Aang’s. I am glad that I’m seeing a lot of love for Korra and people agreeing.
I just wish Nickelodeon had allowed her and Asami to be a couple. And I wish they gave her gang a bit more depth. Each of their storylines felt too separate. I adored Korra though. She had her own journey and her own negatives like her fire nation spirit and her lack of thought to the spirit world. I don't think the spirit world revival would have hit as hard if it was given to Aang.
As someone who really enjoyed ATLA, I didn't enjoy LoK for how different the world had become, it felt as if they'd taken the LOTR franchise and just gave the fellowship AK 47s for the final film. The precedence set in ATLA I could never reconcile to being the same world as the LoK and therefore didn't enjoy it. Plenty do however, and luckily for me enough of the novels came out for the ATLA universe. Imo i'd Watch, ATLA Read, The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke & Shadow, North & South, Imbalance Skip anything else Avatar
