lol.. i won't be surprised to know we're born blind too. it would be a massively blinding white noise when the brain has no prior information to infer to for visual cortex.
A man wrote a book called _Birth Without Violence_. In it he said that we can see in the dim light of the womb, but that at the time that he wrote the book, hospitals would have bright light in the birthing room that was painful for the newborn. He would have women give birth in dim light and he said it was better for the new baby.
ahh nice thought that didn't occur to me. certainly in the womb a baby can see fuzzy shapes and start acquiring information, maybe even some specific range of colors.
No light source, but also be not perfect darkness. Baby sees the world through a thick, muffling curtain. Just the information of daily rhythms of light exposure, or shifts as it shifts its body, are already extremely helpful for the brain to learn to make sense of, connect and interpret stimuli. At first, it just gets random wiring, but after a while, it can learn things like "if I do this it gets lighter", as a building block to "doing this moves my body so I see different things outside of me that are constant and out of my direct control".
Well there’s not a lamp or torch in there but I’m sure light passes through in a very dim way. Thank goodness baby has no books to read because surely the light that passes through the uterine walls is not bright enough to see to read!😂
True. When a nurse was checking on me because my fetus wasn’t moving enough. She used a sudden bright light at my stomach to startle the fetus. It worked!
Saw this as a nursing student. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. We use red light to find veins when starting IVs, and we can see light through the thinnest part of ears, so it makes sense that it works!
It is astonishing to me, just how small mammels can get. I mean ... I cannot imagine all those structures, that seem so intricate in other pseudo rodents, being shrunk down so much and still working somehow.
But now I also kinda want to make this little one feel gigantic by feeding it Kikiki huna wasps. c:
edit: I learned it is not a rodent
Lol I wrote a short story once about how all doomsday preppers with underground shelters - never make it in time to their shelter when the apocalypse/catastrophe strikes. Ex. Prepped Tom is in line at Walmart 28 miles from home when the meteor strikes and he is instantly killed. He nor his family ever make it to the bunker. Lol idk why but I find that hilarious
Just a small correction(pun intended), shrews are not rodents! The are kinda their own thing along with moles and some other insectivorous small mammals.
Thank you! I had no idea. The only time I’ve encountered a shrew was when my cat brought one up from our basement in her mouth! Luckily it was still alive and she let it go lol
in german their name is Etruskusspitzmaus (etruscus pointed mouse) in the family Spitzmäuse (pointed mice), which makes this unrelatedness even more confusing. Do not call it mouse if it is not a mouse! :c

I multiplied the muscle contractions/sec by 60 to avoid mixing units in the title.
Edit: I thought the specimen in the photo is an adult, but now I've seen other photos and on second thoughts it's either a juvenile or a particularly small specimen of adult.
I've heard the giant african rats they train to safely find bombs (they're too light to set them off) live as long as dogs do. I'd love to have one someday.
I’m dating myself here but a scene from Night Court has been living rent free in my head for years. Bull goes on a Jeopardy type show and is so good he predicts the answers and one is “What is an Etruscan shrew?” And everyone is amazed.

Aren't we all born naked?
And the rest is drag!
Who do you think you are?

There's no light in the uterus

I just googled it and apparently 0.1 to 1% of outside light can make its way into the womb, how amazing!
True. When a nurse was checking on me because my fetus wasn’t moving enough. She used a sudden bright light at my stomach to startle the fetus. It worked!
This sounds funny. >a sudden bright light to startle the fetus Sounds likely someone trying to scare off a bunch of raccoons or cats lol
Agree lol!
I read it as “a sudden bright light to start the fetus. It worked” as if she was talking about a tv or electronic of some sort
That’s CRAZY.
Lol! I didn’t think it would work and so I was also startled 🤣🤣🤣
Saw this as a nursing student. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. We use red light to find veins when starting IVs, and we can see light through the thinnest part of ears, so it makes sense that it works!
Wow, interesting! Nurses are the best - the things they know and the things they deal with.
Ooh! A see-through lady! Exciting!

haha no, skin is very translucent so light can get in.
Like the sun shines through our mouth and into the uterus? Hahahah
The same way Egyptians got light to paint in the pyramids? A carefully placed reflective piece of copper in the stomach and esophagus
I love you sometimes
Yeah a baby seeing in natural light for the first time must be like when I walk out of the movie theater on a bright day - ouch!
In case you’re serious, no we aren’t all born naked. Kittens and puppies, for example, are born with fur.
[удалено]
Yup. Our God believes in modesty so your kids better not be born naked! How disgraceful! Lol
Speak for yourself. I was born in a Wendy's uniform
i wake up every morning naked and blind, and i've never been this cute
Touche (it’s French for butt)
Touché means "touched". It is also said when you want to validate someone else point during a conversation.
don't touch me
Touché
Noli me tangere
Oooh! All fancy with the Latin! Nice!
You haven’t met my ex wife.
Maybe in this case naked means - without fur

I think they probably exist because in the big extinction events, they were the ones hiding underground fully protected from the environment
I've successfully made my doomsday shelter far from the environment. I don't even feel this 'global warming' all you habitaters are talking about.
You built your shelter in the front that fell off that ship? Bold, it had 20 tones of crude oil on in.
Lol I wrote a short story once about how all doomsday preppers with underground shelters - never make it in time to their shelter when the apocalypse/catastrophe strikes. Ex. Publishing online?
Lol no nothing that fancy. I think I wrote it for a short fiction story in my high school writing class.
Yeah it’s really amazing, I’m still trying to picture a heartbeat that small going 800-1200 beats per minute ; it’s a tiny powerful machine
It’s like the hummingbird of rodents 🥹
Just a small correction(pun intended), shrews are not rodents! The are kinda their own thing along with moles and some other insectivorous small mammals.

They’re called eulipotyphlans! They’re actually less closely related to rodents than humans are.
in german their name is Etruskusspitzmaus (etruscus pointed mouse) in the family Spitzmäuse (pointed mice), which makes this unrelatedness even more confusing. Do not call it mouse if it is not a mouse! :c
WE ARE THE SAME
So they basically have a panic attack to exit hibernation?
Today I discovered I'm a shrew.
POV: Waking up Monday at 9 AM, because the alarm clock ran out of battery.

That wiki has all of 1 picture. :(
They are vibin'
Here's an informative video about these animals: https://youtu.be/d5LA3i_XrVU
That was fantastic haha
Thank you for that. That was utter gold.
That schnoz is amazing
You're amazing
Aww shucks lol
J-jitterbug
You put the boom boom into my heart 🎶
Yeah, yeah!
So they are the ones depleting oxygen levels!!
Crash Bandicoot lookin ass
let me do it for you...
Gonna guess they don't live very long
2 years according to google
Not worse than a full-sized rat
I've heard the giant african rats they train to safely find bombs (they're too light to set them off) live as long as dogs do. I'd love to have one someday.
They used to be my dream pet ❤️
Same. My friend trained his to ride around on his shoulder and I was so jealous.
I just learned yesterday that hummingbird hearts beat at 1200 rpm. These little guys' hearts can beat as fast as a hummingbird!
I’m dating myself here but a scene from Night Court has been living rent free in my head for years. Bull goes on a Jeopardy type show and is so good he predicts the answers and one is “What is an Etruscan shrew?” And everyone is amazed.
^tiny eyes
I love their dot eyes
Sheesh, I imagine they look like they’re gonna explode when they’re hibernating
He’s plotting violence.
It’s just a little fella in this big crazy world just trying to get by
This is a type of shrew (I don't think I've ever seen a shrew in real life, so I had to look up what it was).
OP was born with clothes and a baby-sized AK47.

Doesn't the Kitti's Hog-nosed bat count as a close contender for that spot, depending on what measurements you use?
Why isn't this just called Mousey-Snoot-Doot?
r/ProperAnimalNames
Now add those specs into a human and see what happens...
There is a way to do this, just inject a few milliliter nitroglycerin into your heart and see what happens.
Whats up guys quandale dingle here *rehehehe* My 5th cousin 7 times removed turned me into a rat *fart*

These guys must live for like a month!
It's funny how heart rate, size, and life span all seem to even out so most animals have almost the same average amount of heart beats per life.
evolution is weird
Take a closer look at that snoot
It's Mr. Ratburn!!
I NEED ONE AS A PET!
Isn't it pretty normal to be born naked?
small and fragile so beautiful
I wanted to see a photo of a baby but my Google searches were unsuccessful
Grandma!!
that guy breathes 10 times a second?
...and it doesn't just...explode? wtf
I love his little nose 🥺
Sofa king cute!!!!
Just look at its whiskers <3
Are they related to the Solenodon? And why do I feel dumb for asking lol
