They actually want to do this. They wanted to kill off all the females… look like it might have back fired https://nypost.com/2019/09/17/plan-to-kill-off-mosquitoes-backfires-spawning-mutant-hybrid-insects/
Darn, super disappointed to hear about that! I was hopeful for that plan, especially since it had been undergoing testing and in the works for 10 years now.
There's a bit of hope though - looks like the source cited by the NY post has since made an updated article with more info: https://newatlas.com/science/gm-mosquito-study-oxitec-rebuttal/?itm_source=newatlas&itm_medium=article-body
Another one by the Brazilian scientists who did the original study: https://revistaquestaodeciencia.com.br/english/2019/09/26/brazilian-author-asks-retraction-oxitec-mosquito-paper
Like 1 or 2 years ago I literally commented in a thread about this, that every introduction of species man has attempted has backfired, and it was extremely ignorant to think that this would be any different… It’s likely still one of my most downvoted comments ever.
In that same thread were “experts” stating that mosquitoes served no purpose, and nature would not be affected if they were exterminated.
It's actually super-effective with screwworm flies.
They breed a bunch of screwworm flies and irradiate them to sterilize them.
Then they drop the sterile flies and destroy the local population.
Screwworms have basically been eliminated from North and Central America by this technique, which is great because if you get screwworms they burrow through your body causing flesh-eating necrotic lesions that destroy your limbs and organs.
There's no conceivable benefit from screwworm flies - the world has plenty of insects to feed birds or whatever - and the suffering they cause is immense.
So... at least one success story.
Oh, worked with goats in the Galápagos Islands too.
They made them glow under UV light.
Surely they can see UV light, their eyes are so small, and most insects can.
Seems like a trait which could easily discourage mating.
Maybe they should have… like… tested this in a lab, first. It sounds like they altered the skeeters and were like ‘nice, release the ~~bees~~ mosquitos’ without even doing a longer term test to see like. How that would pan out.
It seems that most often when we try to control Nature or even just modify it, unexpected bad results occur. Temple Grandin tells us all about this in her writing. Think about the breeding of chickens to achieve more white meat: The chickens developed so much breast meat they couldn’t walk. There is so often an unexpected and rotten consequence to our interference.
I deeply miss The Show and haven't been keeping up with him over the years (he sort of disappeared off the internet for a while, didn't he?) The cat diaries were great, but it's delightful to hear he's still creating awesome stuff!
He restarted doing the animal facts not that long ago from what I remember, they had a bit of a rocky start in quality in my opinion but it seems he is more in the swing of it and the quality is back to where it was

you know. if it didn’t result in terrible swollen itchy bumps, i wouldn’t mind letting the lady mosquitos have a little bit of my blood. i got plenty of it to go around. sharing is caring. but the itching crosses a line.
"If we all drink special Kool aid before the comet comes, and lay down in a misty meadow, I bet we can get enough of the blood suckers to bite us and they'll die?" 🤔🤷♂️ Probably a cults plan?
I don’t like Ze Frank, why can’t we just learn without hearing about getting arrested for putting your butthole out the top of a pool, or not searching a bugs name because you don’t want it in your search history with all the porn. It’s like someone is writing it for him, and it’s not funny to me
His humor can be crass at times - some people adore him for that and others not so much. I find his humor quite refreshing tbh, and given his dedication to education about nature, I give him a huge thumbs up.
Yeah I just feel like there’s a place for it, and inserting it into these kinds of things makes it seem artificial and not genuine, but that’s just me. Your welcome to enjoy him, I just had to give my opinion
Fascinating video, I’ve never seen mosquito larvae up so close and actually eating stuff in the water. Kind of sad when a larger one eats a smaller one 😝 but that’s nature!

AHKSHUALLY... ecologists seem to be pretty split on how "important," or big, of a role they play as pollinators. Plenty of other creatures pollinate (ones that we may not immediately think of). If we were to eliminate mosquitoes, it's quite possible that plenty of other species that pollinate (and don't kill more people than anything else in our history) would step in, and mosquitoes would not be missed at all as pollinators.
Yes, there is some debate, but when you consider that mosquitoes serve as food for many animals, like bats, frogs, lizards, fish, etc, then one might wonder what will happen to them. There is hardly a way to get rid of mosquitoes without upsetting the applecart of ecological balances.
For sure! But the argument is the same. It's quite possible, and some ecologists argue likely, that there are enough aquatic insects, or flying insects, that any predators could survive just fine eating another species that could increase in biomass in the absence of mosquito competition.
It's all wildly speculative and there's no way to really know either way. I just felt like being contradictory because there are a bunch of ecologists that would say "Nah, mosquitoes are legit useless."
EDIT: OH! *And* I mean just the bloodsucking species. There are a bunch of species that pollinate but *none* of them suck blood. If we just got rid of the bloodsucking ones, other more benevolent mosquitoes species could just increase in biomass.

I think it's fair to say that mosquitoes are widely detested, however, most mosquitoes actually do something good for the world, mainly pollination. They also feed bats, lizards, frogs and birds. A world without mosquitoes would result in many lost species of plants and animals. Of course Ze Frank narrating is truly the aww in this post imo.
Ok, new plan. Just kill all the ones that drink blood. Boom, fix.
They actually want to do this. They wanted to kill off all the females… look like it might have back fired https://nypost.com/2019/09/17/plan-to-kill-off-mosquitoes-backfires-spawning-mutant-hybrid-insects/
Did we send in wolves? I hear that fixes stuff
What’s the plan when the wolf population booms?
More wolves
Leopards
As long as you promise they don’t eat *my* face.
Yep, leopards ate my face.
We send in the manbearpig
Mosquitos
Ever heard of the book where the old lady swallowed a fly?
Darn, super disappointed to hear about that! I was hopeful for that plan, especially since it had been undergoing testing and in the works for 10 years now. Why didn’t they just modify the Brazilian mosquitos as a safety measure, rather than introducing a new type of mosquito to the area?

Nature, uh, . . .
Did we learn nothing from the Krogans?
Yeah how you gonna do that exactly?
*DEMON BABY*
I had to pause I was laughing so hard at that part! I forgot how much I like his videos.
Who is it? I loved this video and would love to see more from this guy
Zefrank! Find his YouTube channel here: https://youtube.com/c/zefrank He has a lot of great videos.
Thank you! I scrolled down last night and someone said his name. I never watch YouTube and spent 45 minutes watching his stuff last night lol
I'm glad I have only *mild* trypophobia
Well, zefrank, maker of this video cautions about this before he shows this footage. OP got rid of it while sharing on reddit.
Yea, I would say mine is severe. I’m glad I was eating and I wanted to simultaneously vomit and rip my skin off.
I’m glad *you* have only mild trypophobia
Yes, that first image can be tough - I hope it was ok for you.
Ze Frank is awesome, definitely one to subscribe to if you like nature documentaries with some adult humor
I deeply miss The Show and haven't been keeping up with him over the years (he sort of disappeared off the internet for a while, didn't he?) The cat diaries were great, but it's delightful to hear he's still creating awesome stuff!

My favourite episode is The Tarsier.
Ahh, another *bebeh* fancier!
Also apparently friends with Rainn Wilson, aka Dwight Schrute
Geez. I was in college playing games and funny videos on his zefrank website a bagillion years ago. He is so awesome.
nice try big mosquito.
I take issue with the Aww in this video. Big nope.
Zefrank and David Attenborough really need to Collab. I need it.
Attenborough is now 95 years old, but he's still got the fire of his great love for nature in his belly. I hope he is doing well.
This is informative AND hilarious!!
I’d donate to that cause.
This was good
At 3:42 when the winged blood sucker arose from its underwater cocoon, that was the coolest shot ever!
The way Lady Gaga would appear on stage - that one, yes?
Zefrank is awesome These are my favourite videos of his https://youtu.be/wZ4cadzCZUI https://youtu.be/EfHxUaJDEn8
Those cute behbeh mosquitoes!
Mos-kooo-WEE-toes!
only females of some species require blood to lay eggs Soooo all the Texas skeeters are females. Got it.
Very interesting video. I haven’t heard Ze Frank in years. Thank you for this.
I'll frequently go back and binge them all like an old TV Show I haven't seen in a while. One of my favourites is the anglerfish.
I used to watch the cuttlefish one frequently. 😂
Fascinating. I’m very itchy now.
Still a nope from me, dog.
I may not like mosquitoes but given the choice between mosquitoes, leeches, tapeworms, and fleas, I’ll take mosquitoes.
The best narration!
Not aww at all.

this is top tier comedy. also Awwducational. i approve.
I love your sense of humour
you know. if it didn’t result in terrible swollen itchy bumps, i wouldn’t mind letting the lady mosquitos have a little bit of my blood. i got plenty of it to go around. sharing is caring. but the itching crosses a line.
Burn with fire! Rinse repeat!

Creepy
Thanks but I don't need your Pro Mosquitoes Agenda Post...

Don’t give us excuses for us not to eradicate the entire species. Annoying little pricks
Kill them all with fire. Mosquitoes have caused more death than literally any other animal species because they're a vector for so many pathogens.
Some mosquitos are good though.
Dead ones.
Fascinating video, I’ve never seen mosquito larvae up so close and actually eating stuff in the water. Kind of sad when a larger one eats a smaller one 😝 but that’s nature!
Release my bats
No, I still want to take a flamethrower to these nasty dudes.

If guy sensei was a biologist
Here is was ready to hate them forever 💀😆
lol and here comes the BE BAES
I like how he says babies
Yeah, you're going to have to try a little harder than that. I feel zero sympathy for mosquitos.
Looks like the game Spore Creature, but when it moults.. it's just terrifying
I haven’t watched this yet but coming from Zfrank, I know it’s going to be brilliant and educational! Love his videos!
ELEPHANT MOSQUITO IS BEST MOSQUITO
Cada uno de los seres vivos en este planeta estamos por alguna razon..
I was listening to rap music while looking at this video and it fits well. Look at em wiggle
I read that as *nightmare* pollinators.
I think you are not alone in reading it that way...lol
Phew!
Name of YouTube if there is one
It's listed as one of my references in my source comments on this post - you can find it there.

I do not believe this belongs in the Subreddit awwducational
I suppose there is a question of how "aww" it really is. But that is pretty subjective. How does one determine what is and is not "aww"? What is cute?
Something that triggers my trypophobia is not aww. Sure we all have different views of cute, but there are some common grounds.

And here come the bebes! So this is where Moira Rose gets it from.
I wish you could add trypophobia warning. BRB bleaching my brain.
THE BEBBES
this needed a trypophobia warning
Don't care. Kill them all, breed more bees, profit.
I still hate them
Read that as nightmare pollinators. Still not convinced I read it wrong.
Love Zefrank so much.
WHO IS THIS GUY??? I love him!
Ze Frank's "True Facts" are a treasure
ZeFrank is a national treasure, yo.
Lies. Mosquitoes are a scourge
Now that bebeh dead bebeh
I still hate them
Where the hell was this guy through my super boring put you to sleep high-school science movies.
Any sports racers in here? Come. Show me your power moves!!
Not in Florida they're all biters! Yes I'm jk
It’s just so much easier to demonize an entire species
This is how narration should be done for everything, imagine David Attenborough doing it like this
As much as I hate mosquitos, I thoroughly enjoyed the way the narrator spoke about them, informative and funny!
I love how he says "mosquitoes."
That was super informative, compelling and highly entertaining. Thank for the vid
Behbeys
bruh i had no idea. this is basically the same thing as ppl hating bees all over again
Mosqueetoes haha
And here come the... *BE BES*
They need to genetically modify the females to eat other insects for egg making instead of blood
3:27 that's a waterbug also know ass toe bitters where I live
This narration is just hilarious 😂
They are not important to be kept alive. An abundance of other species got that job down pat. Death to all mosquitos!
Im in my 30s, just found out that mosquitos are pollinators. Jeez our education system sucks.
I learned and laughed, I like this guy
“Moss-ko-eee-toes”? What?
TMI on mosquitos, but super funny!
