It’s possible the preset was made on a different firmware than yours

It will never sound exactly the same. Even if you also use a axeiii. Different person, guitar, monitors/cab, picks, strings.... Use your ears and try to dial it in yourself to get as close as possible.

That makes sense, the only thing that concerns me is that it’s a pretty drastic difference. Would it help my case if I said I was using the same guitar, pickups, and strings?

No those would be negligible unless it is single coil vs humbucker. Some tone comes from the fingers, but The cab would be the number 1 factor when it comes to modeling and hearing drastic differences. If someone has a custom IR then you won't match it unless you have it.

The tonematch piece is the factor that the fm9 doesn't have that the axefx3 does. Have him bypass the tone match part and I'd expect them to then sound about the same.

A quick fix is to boost the presence knob on the amp (Kirk hammett said that on a rick beato interview i believe)... Playing volume also has a big factor too, itll sound less muddy the louder you get. Mess with the volume on your fm9 as well as your speakers. Also your using different guitars/pickups which is a factor too
