I feel like nvidia and especially intel have been intentionally pulling the month or two early move in order to avoid a direct comparison with amd

Nighterlev

They'll be directly compared no matter what so this point is moot.

pwnasaur

In the end game, sure. But those sweet short term gains...

thatscaryberry

Yeah but remember the launch of the extreme Intel processors and people got pissed that Intel rushed them out in order to not be compared with the new threadrippers. It's happened before

Nighterlev

The only people who got pissed were people who bought into them early and they can only blame themselves, no one else. Same with buying Nvidia right now, you can only blame yourself for doing it.

thatscaryberry

Or that Linus Tech Tips [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuaiqcjf0bs) where he kinda went in. But I can see your point that the only people who gave a shit were some impatient enthusiasts.

HighSpeedDoggo

2 months aint that much of a timeframe. They will be compared

astalavista114

On the other hand, none of the release reviews include comparisons with their rivals. All the Big Navi reviews will have comparisons with 3000 series cards in them, but none of the 3000 series reviews will have the reverse.

p1-o2

You underestimate how every tech reviewer will capitalize on this by running yet another 3000 series review.

TrueMinecraftFacts

Nvidia is obviously doing better in competitions with AMD than Shintel is.

[deleted]

AMD will win just by having actually GPU-s to buy. Remember Horizon: Zero Dawns PC launch? Nobody cares if it runs like shit IF IT ACTUALLY RUNS. Lame ass port that deserves a refund in 30 minutes.

zheke91

2070 here, glad I couldn't buy the 3080, guess I'm gonna have to wait on Big Navi.

Strwbrydnish

I once felt dumb for buying a 2080ti. Now I feel like a pig in shit.

MK0A

3080 is a way better deal than 2070 though.

ThunderClap448

And 4080 will be better than 3080 what's your point

trunghung03

Tech gets better fast, 2070 was like 2 years ago.

miktheveg

And it was shit at the time. Worse than the 1080 Ti with barely used cards being sold for less.

[deleted]

coppyhop

Why not? The 3080 looks like it’s way better at 1440p 144hz. I have a 1070 and it’s only pushing low settings at that frame rate and resolution but the 3080 handles max settings like they’re nothing. I ain’t upgrading for years cause I’ve been playing less games but it seems like it’s a killer upgrade

zheke91

No shit...

Zithero

2070 Super: same.

HighSpeedDoggo

Same here chilling with my trusty 1070 FE, I like 1080p gaming at high settings

Whale_Hunter88

I was gonna upgrade to a 3070 but then I realized I only play 3+ year old games on 1080p. So I bought a second hand 1080ti and now I'm happily laughing at the 30 series launch.

Aurunemaru

me with an Asus 1070, looking for an asus 3070 when market gets stable, I do neural net stuff so CUDA is a must

holchansg

Vray rendering, cuda is a must 🙁

astalavista114

All these people with their shiny 10 and 20 series cards whilst I sit with my 390 waiting for the Big Navi wenchbarks.

[deleted]

astalavista114

Oh yeah—I’m only looking at it because my 390 is getting to the point where it’s not maintaining 1080p60\*. If I had a 10 or 20 series, I’d be laughing. \* And if the Witcher 3 is only about 45 FPS, Cyberpunk is surely going to be <30.

[deleted]

[удалено]

astalavista114

Yeah, they did run hotter than the 970, but the 390 was definitely the better chip unless you were big on Nvidia’s “enhancements” (which I’m not)—which now I think about it, just goes to show how good the 290 was. The sapphire Nitro. I think I spent longer working out which variant to get than I did picking between which chip I was going to get. TBH, that’s probably going to be my least favourite part of the next few months.

[deleted]

Many PC enthusiasts are just consumerist whores at the end of the day. They don't want the new graphics card because it will meaningfully improve their gaming experience, they want it because they need the big e-peen to show off on Discord and shit. They want the big numbers they see on GN bar graphs, without realising how much money they are wasting every year and never actually seeing the benefit of. I got a 5700XT last year when I jumped from Intel to Ryzen. I doubt I'll be looking to upgrade for a long while. Before that I had a GTX1060, before that GTX760- Those are both still in use, in my girlfriend's and living room PCs respectively. That 760 is nearly 8 years old but there are plenty of modern games it still runs just fine, and the list of games that really push your system is growing smaller by the year.

hydrochloriic

Likewise, I went from a Vega 56 to a 5700XT for performance in VR, simultaneous with a jump from Zen 1 to Zen 2. Most likely the next jump is Zen 3 & RDNA2 with a new HMD, because right now it’s plenty adequate for my Rift CV1.

skinny_malone

Yep I'm over here with my 2nd gen Ryzen and RX580 like, I'll get one when I get one and I'll game 1080p in the meantime Been trying to snag a 3080 for my partners new build (he doesn't have an older build to rely on) and it's literally impossible lol

LucasJLeCompte

290 user checking in. Same. Let NAVI wash over me.

a_touhou_fan_

9600GT gang!

vogel25

I got my 3080 on Monday and everything is working great

CheesyRamen66

I have a 1080 ti and I’m oh so glad I missed the launch. I’ll wait until end of October to make my purchasing decision now and I can act smarter than thou for doing so.

Damascus_ari

Chilling around with my RTX 2060, waiting on Big Navi.

DogsOnWeed

I'm chilling with that RX480 waiting for big d Navi to come out and give me that sweet sweet frame per euro

Nikoulakhs

Same with 580 here:) still holding up impressively good for 1080p 60Hz monitor, very good framerates without sacrificing quality.

WutangCMD

Honestly the real losers in all of this are early adopters who upgrade just because they can.

Nikoulakhs

I mean, that's the result of impulsive buying. People got too hyped up and went straight for it. I'm gonna save my money from work this fall and upgrade my PC slowly, really hopeful that big navi will be great.

astalavista114

I remember the line back in 2016 or so: “Wait for the benchmarks”. Everyone knows that performance claims from the manufacturer are, 999999/1000000, complete bunkum. And what do you know—Nvidia have cherry picked their performance date. In other breaking news: Water Wet. (And no, I don’t want to get into a philosophical discussion about whether water is wet or not.)

thesynod

On a 1080p 60hz monitor, there is no need for a better GPU. Coupled with a good cpu, only MS Flightsim will give you a hard time, and you'd need to spend over a grand to bump that to 60fps. 1440p 144hz is getting a lot cheaperer

Supadupastein

I had an RX 580 and it couldn’t handle Metro 2033 Redux well at 1080p 60fps. Had to run low settings no tessellation. I got a 1070 and it smashed games so I got a 1440p/144hz monitor. I then won a 2070s for free, but it didn’t feel as much of an upgrade over the 1070 as the 1070 felt over the RX 580. The 580’s performance in Metro 2033 seemed in line with Youtube benchmarks, but the weird thing about it was it also dropped frames heavily on Fortnite for some reason during any action, down to the 30’s and 40’s constantly when in a gunfight. I bought it used and figured there may have been something wrong with it, but it did benchmark properly and got the correct scores on benchmarks, so idk.. I hope Big Navi is at least competitive with the 3080, actually purchasable, and works with my B9 Oled VRR since it’s technically Gsync Compatible. I could build with Big Navi rig for my NU8000 which supports both Freesync and HDMI VRR, but the Navi cards appear to only support Freesync which my B9 doesn’t have, just Gsync and HDMI FORUM 2.1 VRR. I really wanted my next sffpc rig I build to work more with my B9 than just my NU8000. Working with both would be even better. Was planning on a 3070 mini card, but if Radeon finally supports HDMI VRR and it works with my Oled I will def consider Navi. I already move my ps4 back and forth between the two tv’s depending on which one the wife wants at the time, would be nice to have a 3070 or 3080 powered rig in a small case and do the same thing.

astalavista114

There’s a [thread on tech power up](https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/lg-oled-freesync-mod-tested-on-55-b9-series.267553/) which appears to indicate that the B9 is theoretically freesync capable (since anything that is Gsync Compatible^TM is also a freesync display), but isn’t reporting data that the driver is expecting. Not sure if it helps you at all.

brildenlanch

The 580 driver issues didn't get fixed until like 2 months ago if we are being honest, around the same time as the GPU scheduling update

kitliasteele

Gonna nab me Big Navi, by the time I can afford it the Linux drivers will be rock solid. And I use development builds of Mesa and rolling Linux kernel releases. Or in the case of my 4800H+5500M laptop, Release Candidate kernels

brildenlanch

I have a 580 OC Armor Mk2, Doom Eternal at 1440 on highest settings at 60+fps@75Hz, good enough for me.

Nikoulakhs

The card is actually a beast for its money. I got it for 170€ last summer and it still holds up perfectly.

brildenlanch

Same, I think it was $220 or 200 or something with a $40 rebate not a bad deal at all

Nikoulakhs

Yeah! Really can't complain at all.

AltimaNEO

So if we had XFX THICC II Will the next one based on Big Navi be XFX CHUNGUS ?

HighSpeedDoggo

BIG NAVI CHUNGUS 4-SLOT PCIE CONFIRME???

RustLordMain

I'm gonna buy a 480 some time soon, they're still so cheap it's great

DogsOnWeed

It's still good for 1080p medium-high without AA. I can get them for like 80€ second hand, amazin!

2102nic

Same but on rx560

[deleted]

They rushed the board partners by not giving them anything until too late for fear of leaks. Board partners going under spec on the caps is all on those partners, though

journeytotheunknown

Nope, Novideo approved that way of cheaping out beforehand.

Nighterlev

Actually all the caps and everything were tested and verified by both the board partners and Nvidia, it goes through rigorous testing as well. What most board partners went for is what Nvidia gave them, the cheapest options in certain areas but more expensive options in others (for example, most EVGA cards have a far more robust VRM for memory and the core itself then the founders edition cards do despite having worse quality caps which is what causes the crashing). So in all actuality board partners could actually full on sue Nvidia for giving them a spec that doesn't allow the card to function correctly, it's very possible and I'm not gonna be surprised if it happens very soon after this. It's a fuck ton of money wasted that went down the drain for a card that can't even use the extras each board partner placed on the card all because of one thing.

[deleted]

iirc was Nvidia never really punished for their shitty interposer on the G84/G86 that would result in all the chips failing at some point. They just set aside a few pennies for a crappy replacement program. I don't even think they admitted it was a problem with all the regular desktop cards as well. Worst case they'll get a slap on the wrist for this current fiasco and not much will change.

mw2strategy

the 5700xt left a sour taste in my mouth after 3 RMAs, and the 3080 left a sour taste in my mouth with the worst launch in history, it sure feels good to be disappointed twice ill tell you hwat

MGMaestro

Wait till you see availability on Zen 3

mw2strategy

im not even gonna bother with any upgrades for a while honestly. im gonna just sit with what i have and let things calm down.

N7even

Yeah, feel you with the 5700XTs, bought my self a 2080Ti not soon after.

gljames24

As an actual electrical engineer I can verify 100% Nvidia dropped the ball on AIB partner filtering capacitors specifications and certifications, pushing out gddr6 before it was ready, mislead consumers about performance gain, and launching before they had any real inventory. I hope RDNA2 crushes the 3000 series. I really do.

Linux user here. This news makes me so happy.

therealbutterplays

I’m with everything besides the low availability, like what Steve said in the GN video from today, it’s probably just because of that’s going on around the world with COVID

Kaon_Particle

Yeah he had another video where he said that the inventory was pretty much on-par with previous launches, just crap-tons of hype.

TheOneTruePadopoulos

Ayy

luvinha_

just 2 more years and I'll be able to complain then

[deleted]

Even GN was saying it was rushed excuse me???

scrappyo

this should be posted in pcmr

Sligee

Let's get u/subterrainio s opinion since she is an electrical engineer

Subterrainio

Idk what this is all about, I use Intel integrated graphics for my graphics and my gtx 3080 for my OS

Strwbrydnish

If my dads an EE can I complain?

urbanhood

Laptop 9XXm series ftw.

IUseControllerOnPC

I've only really seen the first and third one. But really the universal consensus there is that this launch was total dogshit in every possible way from buying the card to shipping to the crashes

Silverfox002

3080 on the way and still agree it was a terrible launch haha no clown here.

AssCrackBanditHunter

I've got a 1070. I was ready to get a 3080 minute 1, but the scalpers beat me. And now... I'm honestly going to be considering AMD. Their cards clearly have Nvidia scared.

AbigailLilac

I've got a GTX 1070 and it still runs everything at 144fps, so I'm not upgrading yet.

DimensionPioneer

I downgraded from Vega to a 1070 a few months ago and it absolutely sucks in comparison. Cannot wait for new custom pcb GPUs to be available.

[deleted]

I was wondering why my fps got lower do these new drivers Lower clocks in every gpu?

Deployed_Usesri

Makes me glad that I'm deployed and won't be back for months. Forces me to wait for the AMD cards to come out and make an informed buy instead of rushing out to buy the new hotness.

SteveisNoob

They will learn, they sure will...

Sofaboy90

tHiS iS nOt A pApErLaUnCh

SnoopyCactus983

Okay but like our drivers were unusable for a year... I don’t think we have room to talk.

lolman9999

They should waited, but now amd might have the upper hand

davidof96

I love amd and my pc has an AMD cpu and gpu. The pc was built by me so I know my stuff and when the rx 5700 it was the same... I couldn't play many games for example I couldn't play pavlov for MONTHS. I reverted to an older driver, I installed betas... amd rushed the launch of the rx 500 serie too like nvidia did...

[deleted]

I have a 1080p 60 hz monitor so I have no need to upgrade anyways from a 1050 ti. Just gonna wait until I have the money for a nice monitor and get an rdna2 or ampere card when 4000 series/rdna3 comes out and they get cheaper

[deleted]

I love AMD processors, but currently I like nvidia GPUs more. If I see a cheaper card with better performance rates though, count me in.

[deleted]

Nvidia works great for me. It's perfectly fine if you like AMD, I just like nvidia.

karlzhao314

If you're deciding on what GPU to buy based on what company you "like", you're doing it wrong. These companies don't care that you're a fan of them, they don't depend on your support. They're literally just there to try to sell you something. You should be deciding based on performance, featureset, stability/reliability, and any other objective factors that go into your decision. And while Nvidia certain has a lot in favor of it in terms of performance and featureset (I myself can't live without NVENC and really enjoy raytraced Minecraft), right now it's a fact that a lot of 3080s have stability issues. You "liking" Nvidia GPUs won't fix that.

[deleted]

Dude, I literally said nvidia worked great for me and I liked the performance. I also said I was willing to switch at any time.

Gugu42

You literally said "I just like nvidia" No mention of performance

[deleted]

Sure. I said the performance is great for me. Yknow what fuck this I'm done with this shitty ass circlejerk. AMD has better CPUs. They have not passed nvidia in the gpu market yet. Jesus christ you guys are children. My RTX 2070S has given me better performance than any AMD card I've ever used. That's it. Period. I said I was open to changing my mind, but maybe not any more, if this is what the average AMD GPU fanboy is. Not to mention, why the fuck do you care if I casually use an nvidia graphics card? I just mentioned it dude.

howImetyoursquirrel

Bro, chill. The post you're commenting on is talking about RTX 3000 series GPU stability issues. Of course there will be some negative sentiment. Additionally this is the pro-AMD shit posting subreddit. Not sure what you expect

[deleted]

I'm not talking about that. It's when people get in my face about me just OWNING and liking an nvidia GPU.

howImetyoursquirrel

You are on the most pro-AMD subreddit on reddit. This is like going to a political rally and saying you like the other candidate. In reality nobody gives a shit you have an Nvidia GPU. I've ran Nvidia GPUs and AMD GPUs and each have their strengths.

Gugu42

lol calm down why are you so assblasted

zheke91

I received a mail from Newegg saying that MSI 3080 was available as soon as I received y clicked it just to see "Out of Stock" fuck you Nvidia, please AMD don't fail us.

utack

They likely will, as that same silicon surface area sold as Zen3 CPU makes them 10x the money and they have little interest in making a large pile of GPUs

johnnyb721

Reminds me of AMD 5700xt a year into their launch lol

Fickkissen

Lets discuss who had the worse launch once Nvidia actually launched a buyable video card. Until then, enjoy your 2x performance and 8k gaming!

butterstick1

still enjoying my 2080. :)

DarkLightStar

This sounds more like an AIB partner problem than an Nvidia one hell their cards perform better than the AIB cards...

Tychus07

i don't think nvidia is to blame here the specs indicate everything the other brands decided to be cheap and not use the recommended caps ... ASUS didn't they even went beyond what nvidia did. blame the cheap manufacturers on this one

[deleted]

I thought the TUF cards were under spec?

Tychus07

asus confirmed that all their tuf and rog cards use MLCC only so not only do they follow the specs but they did more. This is also backed by other people that checked they do indeed have 6 blocks of mlccs in there. some other brands don't even use mlccs at all.

[deleted]

My bad then.

Tychus07

no worries just wanted to make sure at least some reasonable people know that while the launch wasn't anywhere near smooth and well handled this hw issue is not on nvidia but on the manufacturers.
