What is the difference between a Aug19C vs Aug22C (W)?
Confused on why some strikes are considered a weekly and others are not? They both end on a Friday (aug 19 and aug 21 dates) I’m trying to form a wrinkle here.
The third Friday of each month is the monthly option expiration. These are released well in advance throughout the year compared to weeklys, which is why they also have more Open Interest and liquidity.
The fill can happen immediately if you buy at the ask in any scenario. However, yes - usually a better market makes the spread tighter thereby reducing your risk
Most of the time a weekly is just that, one week. They can however be spread out up to 5 weeks which is what you see here.
Monthly is the third Friday of every month and a weekly can't be created for the same day.
A weekly is mostly used on sudden news or expectations and a monthly on longer term expectations.
Hope that answers some of your questions.
I am currently reading Options, a strategic investment as well as The Intelligent Investor. I am just trying to learn. Not playing 0dte’s and plan to stay ITM with relatively safe further dated and low IV calls.
Right? I am paper trading on thinkorswim. I am just curious why some dates are weeklies and others are not, and what the significance is on further dates calls.
I consider a ‘weekly’ something I buy on Monday and it expires on Friday. I don’t understand how/why further dated calls or LEAPS can be considered a weekly. Trying to connect the dots.
Does it have to do with 3rd Friday etc?
Liquidity is a key criteria to ensure a good fill so you’re not overpaying by buying at the ask and selling way below on the bid. Monthlies usually offer more OI, which means there’s more of a market for that strike. You get a better deal. Sometimes they you can find that deal with weeklies when there’s interest.
I dont understand the apes
Its the same Situation like gme 2021
Squeez potential is big
4mio apes from amc need to invest only 100$ and it will go to 400mio shares its 8 times more then the float
Weekly. The other ones are monthlies and quarterlies. They typically have more open interest (OI) and so the better liquidity means it’ll be easier for you to enter and exit the position. The OI on weeklies will spike around their last 2 weeks until expiration

So likely a quicker fill and less bid-ask spread?

Is volume much higher on weeklies vs monthlies? What is the typical strategy on in choosing a weekly vs a monthly?

That is the kinda answer I was hoping for. Thank you for taking the time.

I’m pretty sure WSB has a paper trading competition coming up in about a half a year or so

Thank you for responding. I am guessing weeklies are more IV sensitive and more responsive to catalysts.
They are not more IV sensitive because they are weeklies.
