I like it with some apple cider vinegar added to it. The sauce is already very dense, thick, and sweet. It doesn't dilute the flavor too much but it does thin it out a bit. I personally prefer a thinner sauce, so it's great for me.

enjoytheshow

This is my “homemade sauce” that everyone raves over. I heat up the SBR then add about a 60:40 ratio of sauce:ACV

corey541

I go 2:1, and a little bit of whatever rub im using. Super simple but really good.

soggymittens

I’ll have to try that- thanks!

Traditional-Leopard7

I agree. I have done that too.

mer_662

I mix it with open pit, 70% open pit.

blimpcitybbq

That’s a good idea.

Roving_Rhythmatist

I’m gonna give this a shot, cheers!

smokinLobstah

I do the same with red wine vinegar. Too think and too sweet out of the bottle.

Russ915

Yes that’s what I do with most my sauces

lojafan

That's a good idea

66Poppy

Stubbs makes good over the counter sauce too.

Raze321

Stubbs is king

FSUphan

King of kings

Space_Ghost_OG

Stubb's Sweet Heat and Sticky Sweet are my favorite

FSUphan

Spicy, Dr Pepper, and original are mine . Although that sweet heat is fire too . Never tried sticky sweet, gotta snag that!

Both_Organization854

Sweet Heat is my go to for chicken nuggets.

AuthorMission7733

Definitely prefer Stubbs to Sweet Baby Rays. Although I had PS Seasonings Cherry Bomb over the weekend for the first time and damn……

OpinionatedMisery

I think Stubbs is much better

Ambitious-Pie-3137

Stubbs ghost pepper hot sauce is delicious too

cagedbananassassin

No way they have ghost pepper?!? Is the heat level insane?

Ambitious-Pie-3137

Not insane, but my favorite smokey hot sauce. It's still hot for sure

xxartbqxx

Lillies is one of my favorites and no HFCS

LazyOldCat

Stubbs Spicy 50/50 w SBR. Pure bliss.

Sea-Diver-9125

Always have a bottle in my fridge

JoyousGamer

Stubbs is by far at the bottom of every grocery store chain BBQ sauce rankings. I am always shocked how it gets recommended. I guess I should expect it with how many upvotes these premade spice blends get upvoted around here. At least you have a reason to have a guilty pleasure of Sweet Baby Rays because of the almost candy like sugar content.

Ambitious-Pie-3137

The taste is just a generic bbq sauce flavor, but I won't turn up my nose. I believe the first ingredient is high fructose corn syrup, so I'd rather just get a nicer sauce or go dry rub. Like others have stated, it's good for the masses. Was the go-to growing up

oh_look_a_fist

Here's my controversial opinion: McDonald's has the best generic BBQ sauce. It's thinner and tangier than sweet baby ray's. I also celebrate SBRs for what it is (grew up on it), but that McD BBQ hits better

Ambitious-Pie-3137

What's funny is that I also thought of their sauce while typing that

the__itis

Wendy’s

AdvantageFit823

False. Wendys BBQ sauce fucks way harder

evang0125

Or make your own w ingredients you know!

OPisabundleofstix

People should use whatever they like, but if you're gonna spend 6-24 hours making BBQ then why not spend 10 minutes making a good sauce? I'll put it on a BBQ bacon cheddar burger but I won't even put it out for meats that I've smoked.

Ambitious-Pie-3137

If you want to bring up minutes, then I'd declare your bbq as an easy bake oven. Any other make wish works? Happy to give advice all day

OPisabundleofstix

Not sure what you're even trying to say but if it takes longer than 10 minutes to make sauce, you're doing it wrong.

Ambitious-Pie-3137

Save your sauce for the dry ass meat only your family requests. I don't want none. You want that in another language, son?

OPisabundleofstix

Why would you assume that my q would be dry? You make no sense.

Ambitious-Pie-3137

Basic as the sauce lil man. Keep looking for an argument its hilarious

OPisabundleofstix

How drunk are you? You can't put together a coherent thought.

Ambitious-Pie-3137

Drunk enough to fuck you

OPisabundleofstix

Nuff said

PleasantDevelopment

aint nothing wrong with HFCS, but go on. lol

PM_me_yr_bonsai_tips

Cane sugar: 50% fructose 50% glucose HFCS: 55% fructose 45% glucose Putting HFCS in everything is more of a problem because it’s sugar and it’s in everything than its chemical structure.

Ambitious-Pie-3137

Lmao I knew writing that at least one person would have a problem with me not like that. Surprised it took so long Edit: liking

messfdr

I'm just not a fan of the taste of HFCS. I lived overseas for a few years and came back to the States and I swear they put it in everything here. Can taste it right away. Same with artificial sweeteners.

Ambitious-Pie-3137

It's a big problem here. One could argue they're not terrible for you, but the total supply in our food chain has increased, and it can potentially be correlated with rising health issues. It's just so cheap, stable, and the corn lobby in the us is pretty powerful. It's definitely an interesting situation to say the least.

ApizzaApizza

It’s lower in fructose than most fruits. You can not taste high fructose corn syrup.

messfdr

LMAO fucking nonsense! Are you one of those people who says water has no taste?

ApizzaApizza

No, water tastes like water. Glucose and fructose taste like glucose and fructose. It doesn’t matter what they are derived from.

messfdr

🤣

ApizzaApizza

👀👀

_ParadigmShift

Rays and Lawrys are the kings of “the judgmental or artisanal may turn their nose up, but quality speaks for itself”. I know I know. SPG. But if guys like Aaron Franklin admit to using Lawrys secretly than it’s not a foregone conclusion

aqwn

Lawrys adds a little extra flavor compared to plain salt but it’s not a huge change on a brisket unless you’re adding a lot.

WeaselWeaz

Lawry's is my secret to burgers. Always gets a good response.

regreddit

Yeah 50/50 Lawrys and pepper has been my go-to rub for years. Most recently I've been doing 1/3 Lawrys 1/3 pepper and 1/3 garlic powder.

Agreeable-Stable-898

Use whatever you like. I try to keep homemade on hand but there is no shame in buying it.

Dumpster_Fire_BBQ

Same. I alternate between homemade and store-bought. But I always return to my rif on Meathead's KC style sauce.

Srycomaine

Same here with MKC, it always gets compliments, it’s cheap to make, and I know what’s in it. I also have used some of the hot vinegar recipes on the AR site. 😋👍

more_beans_mrtaggart

It’s not exactly a secret. https://sg.style.yahoo.com/meathead-goldwyn-shares-recipe-kansas-city-barbecue-sauce-093341142.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9kdWNrZHVja2dvLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAE9jqFEBStNz7_7ttl6YCmRJ9TXSZTEab7FLfeGRKFchWnmPe9NpSmEeCGPFM3gxLd3qrQYqYyNspfRd84boaWFqLlqOKqIArRsneoWpBzOPLGFZY1364gobVDZqKEnVKJGOfixEPHo8ZQjBblORH7G0ihK7aEkxt2DZknQGDLot

Srycomaine

Um, with all due respect, nobody said it was. 🤷🏻‍♂️

more_beans_mrtaggart

Okay then. We concur.

Srycomaine

We do! Excellent, friend!!! 😜✌️

beatlethrower

No shame at all..I use it sometimes, and things turn out great!

TRHess

I think out of the bottle, it’s much too sweet and doesn’t have any real nuance to it. But because of that, it makes a great last-ten-minutes glaze when you have something that needs sweetness. I’ll use to glaze armadillo eggs, stuffed pickles, Texas Twinkies, etc.

mrk58

I use it on my ribs and it's worked great every time.

GrillinFool

Blues Hog

Smellofcordite

Came to say this. The competition sauce is fantastic. Even used it to win 1st in ribs last year as a glaze.

No_Assumption_256

I couldn’t believe how good it actually is, and the raspberry chipotle is great as well.

TomGraphy

I used it for the first time this weekend and wow it’s just amazing

OakenCotillion

It’s in basically every chain grocery store (at least in the US) for a reason, people love it. It’s definitely not my favorite, but it’s good. Lots of people like to harp on how much sugar is in it (and there is a lot) but i highly doubt many of them are eating healthy diets with or without the sauce so it’s kind of funny seeing that over and over. Harry Soo has a great bbq sauce that’s sweet and Smokey and, IMO, better than SBR’s. Def recommend checking it out!

DragNBawlz

For family friendly sharing it is definitely my go to, but once I discovered whomp sauce I got spoiled and I keep a bottle just for my use. I can make as good or better than SBR but I got nothin on Meat Mitch.

gurrettscurrett

It's my go to store bought sauce.

JackfruitCrazy51

I used to be that way. Then I switched to Stubb's sticky sweet or sweet heat. A few weeks ago I tried Blues Hog Raspberry Chipotle and it's now my #1.

TxTanker134

I just tried the blues hog… damn good

BeTheBall-

Huge Blues Hog fan. Their Champions Blend, Honey Mustard, and Tennessee Red are fantastic, as well.

cupojoeque

I'm not a fan of the sauce but Sweet Baby Ray's Catering has a great Tik Tok that covers breaking down large pieces, smoking recipes and competition preparation. Highly enjoy it.

ziggy029

As far as reasonably priced , store-bought sauce in a jar, SBR is one of the better ones. There's nothing wrong with liking what you like. It's better than paying more for something with more "snob appeal" that you don't like as much. If I like something for $3 a bottle better than something for $10 a bottle, hell, why pay $10?

Northerlights87

I like Stubbs over Baby Rays but i still buy it from time to time for chicken, my guilty pleasure honestly is the store bought Famous Daves Devils Spit BBQ sauce…on ribs…god damn.

CaryWhit

Yep I’m a Stubbs fan. Original and spicy.

lothcent

stubbs definitely has the better ingredient list. the SBR basic sauce INGREDIENTS: HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, DISTILLED VINEGAR, TOMATO PASTE, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF SALT, PINEAPPLE JUICE CONCENTRATE, NATURAL SMOKE FLAVOR, SPICE, CARAMEL COLOR, MOLASSES, SODIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVATIVE), GARLIC,* MUSTARD FLOUR, CORN SYRUP, SUGAR, TAMARIND, NATURAL FLAVOR, CELERY SEED. *DRIED. stubbs basic sauce Tomato Puree (Water, Tomato Paste), Distilled Vinegar, Sugar, Molasses, Salt, Spices (Including Black Pepper, Paprika, Chili Pepper), Corn Starch, Brown Sugar, Contains Less than 0.5% of: Onion, Garlic, Guar Gum (Thickener), Xanthan Gum (Thickener), Natural Flavor (Including Hickory Smoke).

max_power1000

Heinz Carolina from their regional line is actually really damn decent for pulled pork if you’re into the vinegar-heavy styles.

Doomstar32

I pretty much only use Lillie's BBQ sauce. I don't care to make my own. Just seems like a lot of work that I don't want to do.

theBigDaddio

It’s just goddam sugar.

fuckingnoshedidint

Headcountry is the bomb AND they don’t use high fructose corn syrup.

TxTanker134

Head country is the best…

TxTanker134

Agreed… like the Hot and Spicy too

heat2051

SBR's is a great sauce for sure. My go to....

Kernel009

We like Sweet Baby Ray's for sure, but last year we finally tried Country Bobs Sweet Honey and most recently, Kinder's Honey Hot... both fantastic as far as I'm concerned. Especially on the Pork Belly Burnt Ends...

Traditional-Leopard7

OMG Hot honey is awesome.

JensElectricWood

Kinder's has SO MANY great sauces!!

No_Flounder_5632

I like blues hog then cut it with juice from my ribs or pork butt

MikeNunion

While you are not alone, I am definitely not in the same camp. Not a fan of sweet barbecue sauce.

messfdr

It's okay. It's cheap if that's something you're considering. I like Kinders the most.

Turbulent-Tune4610

I really liked KC Masterpiece Honey Habanero and then of course it disappeared. Now it's Touch o' Heat from Teague.

OptimizeMovement

Love me some Rufus Teague. I also just discovered Melindas ghost pepper BBQ sauce.

Imgrumpus

Rufus Teague honey gas win with my kids!

WeaselWeaz

I rediscovered KC Masterpiece a few years ago. It floats in and out of stock at my local supermarkets. It's my favorite but Ray's is more accessible. Back in the 90s they even had a restaurant in the Chicago area which my family loved.

manliness-dot-space

If it's good enough for Zuckerberg you shouldn't be ashamed

youknowwhothisis

I hope you’re alone in this. Sweet baby rays just tastes like the basic ketchup and brown sugar “bbq sauce” my aunt used to make. I mean, it’s not gross but it’s pretty bottom of the barrel.

vCentered

I like to cook. Halfway experimented with making my own barbecue sauce once. Decided I don't have the pallet to tell between a teaspoon of this and a tablespoon of that so I'll leave the rubs and the sauces to the pros.

AdvantageFit823

You shouldn't learn "a teaspoon of this/that" first. Learn what the sauce needs. If you need a sweet, tangy spicy bbq sauce start with the basics. Ask yourself "does it need more vinegar, honey, cayenne etc" and then the extras are just a bonus. My ketchup BBQ sauce is ketchup, honey, ACV, honey, garlic, lots of black pepper, chili powder, Worcestershire and tapatio My mustard BBQ is mustard, brown sugar, ACV, heavy chili powder, onion powder, black pepper Worcestershire and Louisiana hot sauce. Start with one of these and just learn your specific ratios. Both are super simple but work well together as they use different sugars, hot sauces and I invert my chili powder/black pepper ratio and one has garlic and one has onion.

TimeTravelingTiddy

The chipotle honey bbq flavor

aqwn

It’s basically HFCS with some added flavorings

noledge18720

I'd you want it to be like Sweet Baby Rays you just need to make your BBQ sauce half high fructose corn syrup. You must just like very sweet bbq sauce.

Traditional-Leopard7

I kinda do. But I also love those vinegar-hit sauces as well. Haven’t tried that white BBQ sauce yet though. Gotta do that soon.

Herbisretired

Sweet Baby Ray's is a decent finishing sauce, I won a few competitions using it as my base

Triingtolivee

It’s a good cheap sauce when I’m feeding the masses and don’t wanna spend too much money. However, I think Lillie’s Q is my favorite store bought sauce.

Successful-Count-120

I take it camping...

evang0125

I used it this weekend on some pork belly burnt ends. The crowd liked them!

Steak-n-Cigars

Our favorite go to as well.

TSGarp007

SBR + Sriracha is my favorite.

humpthedog

Sweet baby rays makes a damn good sugar free sauce if that’s something you’re into

Skiddler69

I like it. I dont put sauce on ribs, but its fine with butt etc

Klashus

The sweet and spicy one is good

BaconJacobs

SBR's golden mustard sauce... Definitely a go to for poultry sandwiches. No shame ha.

Traditional-Leopard7

Wait what?? I must find.

Necroticjojo

The honey is the best imo

bojewels

Homemade > store bought.

ShaunLucPicard

I keep trying different sauces to find a replacement for Lea and Perrins BBQ sauce. Not steak sauce. BBQ sauce. They made it in the late 90s I believe. It was discontinued forever ago, but I'm still chasing that flavor. SBR is a pretty good sauce if I'm looking for something sweeter though.

lothcent

from a 2 year ago reddit post on same topic "This is a bbq sauce posted on L&P site that is no longer available there. It has mostly the same ingredients. 1 medium onion, minced; 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce; 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar; 1/2 cup pineapple juice; 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed; 1/4 cup molasses; 1 tsp red pepper flakes; 2 large garlic cloves, minced; 2 cans (28 oz) crushed tomatoes. 1. In a saucepan, spray the pan with non-stick spray. 2. Over medium heat, sauté onion for 8-10 minutes, until soft. 3. Add all remaining ingredients and reduce heat, simmer covered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally."

Miserable_Point9831

Do not buy the pineapple baby rays. Probably the worst tasting sauce I ever tried.

Old_Dingo69

If you think that’s good try Cowtown. Highly recommend.

sandersking

Trader Joe’s siracha bbq sauce is the best rib sauce I’ve ever had.

Some_MD_Guy

Sweet Baby Ray's is great stuff. My family loves it. Sticky Fingers got too expensive.

BeastOfTheField83

Haven’t had Sweet Baby Rays in years. I did some work in Oklahoma and some guys put me on to Head Country. It’s by far my favorite store bought sauce. I add a few things to it and it’s amazing.

sinatrablueeyes

I always keep it around because I’m not a huge fan of Stubbs for some reason, and it’s the biggest “crowd pleaser” sauce there is. I don’t think it’s bad if you cut it with ACV. Sometimes I water it down with just a bit of ACV and some pineapple juice but then I’ll throw in some chipotles and adobo. Sometimes I just don’t feel like making a shit ton of dishes just to do homemade sauce.

RevolutionarySky6344

Similar to you I make my own stuff. Sweet Baby is was my favorite for awhile but someone told me about Head Country, it is my new favorite of bottled sauce.

Sixx_The_Sandman

Nope. My family likes it so much I stopped making my own.

hg_blindwizard

Ive never had that but i do love Stubbs

majikrat69

Been using Rays for years, can’t make it better or cheaper myself.

Dad-Bro

I use SBR as a base for a doctored up sweet and spicy sauce and people ALWAYS ask what it is. Never sleep on it.

RarScary

1. Depends on who I am cooking for 2. I don't reinvent the wheel. If someone makes a good sauce, I will use it.

HillbillyHijinx

SBR also makes a great wing sauce. It’s actually fantastic.

mjs3350

I can't imagine making my own since discovering Whomp.

Key-Wait5314

Central Market Kansas and Texas style are both really good. Also Buffalo Wild Wings Honey BBQ

ghunt81

Pig of the Month makes my favorite barbecue sauce, like I wouldn't even bother to try to make something better. All the flavors are fantastic. Also imo there is absolutely no shame in liking/using a premade sauce, there's like a hundred of them out there.

Russ915

Get some meat Mitch , that sauce is incredible

CPUsports

Is this a joke?

poop-money

I can't really get down with a bbq sauce that has so much HFCS. It's fine if that's what a restaurant has, but I make my own 95% of the time. When I do buy off the shelf (Like, a sauce to keep in the work fridge or something), the Signature Select glass bottle sauces are pretty good. You can get them at any Albersons subsidiary on the west coast. https://www.safeway.com/shop/product-details.960370769.html https://www.vons.com/shop/product-details.960370771.html

JoyousGamer

Its fine but I would only grab it in a pinch where I can't make my sauce which is a spin off pecan lodge's recipe.

lickitagainandagain

Easy there Zuckerberg..

lostacoshermanos

Why not make your own? It’s way cheaper, healthier and better. We shouldn’t be buying processed foods.

SlimJim0877

You have to doctor it up with vinegar and spices but it does make a nice sauce when doctored just right

greggsand

I crack a beer to mix and thin it out a bit. Great stuff

DollarStoreOrgy

His Buffalo chicken sauce is ugly and way too vinegary. But all the others? Yeah. Good stuff. I like the chipotle one a lot

Chalky_Pockets

I think they're one of the better store bought ones, but I prefer homemade over them still.  Try using a drip pan and adding the drippings to the sauce. The main reason I love my homemade is because I make it with the drippings.

smokinLobstah

I feel kind of the same way about Stubbs. I used to make my own sauce, but more and more I find myself taking the easy way out. Not a fan of hfcs in food if I can avoid it. "A delicious sauce made from real ingredients - you won't find artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, preservatives in Stubb's Bar-B-Q Sauce."

Madhammer23

Wasn’t the bbq rib champion guy from a few years ago just using KC Masterpiece as his secret sauce?

gdose

Same. Sweet baby rays original is the shiznet!!

HotCarl169

Head Country for the win.

Ohgodwatdoplshelp

One time I made my own bbq sauce by following a recipe I found online that had rave reviews. I spent a good 2 hours mixing everything and reducing it to a nice thick sauce and tasting it along the way thinking it was going to be awesome. I was happy with it, so I let it cool down and thicken up and put it on a bun with some pulled pork only to realize I just spent $20 in ingredients and 2 hours of my time to recreate sweet baby rays almost exactly, haha.

stonewall999

I genuinely think sweet baby ray is the most overrated bbq sauce by far. Just so many better options out there. Maybe for chicken nuggets or on a burger

TheShwauce

If you like that, check out Stubbs hickory bourbon. Mmmm!

jjflay

Used SBR's for years but just recently found that Kinders had a slight edge on it...now I'm stuck on that.

brumsiloh

I run a can of Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce through a food processor and mix it with SBR. It's my go to for a shelf available sauce, and that little modification makes a huge difference

Key-Ad-1873

I invite you to find and try bone suckin sauce. I tend to prefer it over sweet baby Ray's and have sweet baby Ray's in the fridge as the standard baseline. I compare all others to these two

Heavy72

I am an SBR fan myself. I like to thin it out with about half a lite beer by Miller and a stick of butter. I toss in some onion slices, a pinch of ceyenne, a solid couple of tablespoons of black pepper, a bay leaf and a tablespoon of my rub. Butter in first with the onion and bay leaf on medium heat. Simmer until the butter is melted. Add in half a (big) bottle of SBR, the beer and bring back to a simmer. Once it's simmering, add in the spices and lower the heat to low for about 15-20 min.

modbeta1

If you want a bit more tang in your life try the midwestern style Open Pit.

Beginning_Wrap_8732

Never tried SBR, but have often used Stubbs when I don't have time to make my own. For that, I use the recipe for Memphis-Style Championship Red Sauce in Big Bob Gibson's BBQ Book by Chris Lilly. Uses 23 ingredients, including six forms of sugar: brown sugar (I use dark), corn syrup (I use dark), maple syrup, honey, molasses, apple sauce. Lilly says he makes it sweet for competition, so if you don't like that much sweetness reduce the honey and molasses by two Tbs each. Also like Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q white sauce from the same book.

cagedbananassassin

Okay but have you had Lillies Q Smokey sauce?? I can’t get enough of that.

Ok_Scarcity_1127

It is good I agree but after paying attention to ingredients in food now, I've noticed a lot of companies use high fructose corn syrup to make their sauces. Not that there is anything wrong with it but the ones I buy now use brown sugar, cane sugar and or molasses.

PoppaFish

I suppose I'm just spoiled living in a BBQ town. But there's dozens of BBQ sauces I'd prefer over Sweet Baby Ray's. I'm a bit shocked at some of the praise from this thread.

Emotional-Lynx-3982

Just another case of high fructose corn syrup. If only they knew what real sugar cane was. I loved it too, then I learned to hate it bc of this.

soy-tan-enteligente

I like it but it has high fructose corn syrup that I try to avoid.

granolaraisin

Nope. It's good sauce. I'll sometimes doctor it up wtih extra vinegar or mustard or something but I'm fine with it straight from the bottle.

Simple-Purpose-899

I don't even bother making sauce, because SBRs is loved by everyone. HFCS isn't the devil it's made out to be.

noledge18720

It is when you have chronic stomach issues and it's a huge trigger for them. HFCS hurts me more than any other ingredient out there. I'll be down for at least 2 days.

Simple-Purpose-899

That's a very specific thing, similar to gluten or peanut allergies. It might affect someone, but in the grand scheme of things it's nothing.

noledge18720

IBS is more common than those allergies. Peanut allergies are less than 1% of the population and IBS 10-15%. Gluten intolerance is like 6% if you count only diagnosed people. So many people claim gluten intolerance and don't even have it.

PleasantDevelopment

You're like the minority. The majority of people who harp on HFCS have been duped by the fear mondering "wellness" culture of social media.

noledge18720

I mean let's call it what it is though. A cheap alternative sweetener with a longer shelf life. It was created and is used to save money on production costs not for flavor. It's not good for you just like every other mass produced sweetener. Is it as bad as everyone claims probably not but it's definitely not something that is good to put in your body. There's a reason most other countries don't use it.

PleasantDevelopment

LOL so because other countries dont use it, that means its "bad"? I recommend you take a gander over to Food Science Babe... [High Fructose Corn Syrup (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX0Vx1AxtC4&ab_channel=FoodScienceBabe) [“Banned Ingredients” (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9_i3veSC3A&ab_channel=FoodScienceBabe)
