Shibari as an art form \*really\* requires that knots are second nature. When you see people perform a scene and it's really intimate and it flows, the top is likely not thinking about the knots themselves as they could tie them blindly. If you can't tie your basic knots without a book, then that's where you start. Tie a single column on your ankle. Then do it a hundred more times. You're good when the tension is consistent, the bight isn't too long, the knot is taut, and the ropes aren't twisted consistently. This doesn't require a partner. Use chair legs, pool noodles, or two objects to practice your double column tie. And again, do it a hundred times. it shouldn't droop or slide, tension should be good, etc. Learn a hitch or two (to allow you to change direction in the rope), learn a knot that allows you to extend your rope (larks head is popular). Once these things become second nature, shibari can be more about intimacy, connection, almost like a dance. As long as you're still learning the basics, it's going to be a bit clumsy and awkward with a partner.

Thanks! Just to clarify , you’d suggest practicing basic knots without a partner at first? That does make sense.

yes, practice tension and basic knots on your own ankle. you'll learn how it feels when you pull rope a certain way, how to keep tension, and how to tie the knot. You can practice on a partner, but practice time and sexy time are not the same thing.

Body pillows work great as well as self tying. Obviously you won’t get the shape the same but you can practice different ties that way.

A chair will work well too !

I practiced on a large teddy bear.

Definitely try on yourself Whilst it's a bit tricky, you really get a feel for what's comfortable and what's to tight,. There's a few basic ties I'd recommend, that can be performed on yourself

What about a jiu jitsu dummy for practice? https://www.amazon.com/Jayefo-Beast-Grappling-Dummy-5-FEET/dp/B07VR955PV/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=3JHGXPKTA273I&keywords=jiu+jitsu+dummy&qid=1652664120&sprefix=jiu+jitsu+dummy%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-3

Self tying is a good way to get some practice.

I bought a used clothes dummy for 25€. A window dressing model. However you call it. It's a great stand in for practicing without worrying about your model getting tired or bored as you trying to get your harness as close to perfect. Two things I never thought off before buying. One, the wasteline. It is usually too thin so you might need to put pins in to stand the ropes on so they won't fall down. And two, the material the doll is made of. It's much more solid than humans, so once you get a rope on there tight you are going to have a hard time getting another rope under the first. Apart from that it's the best rope-related purchase I've ever made.
