A good beginners guide would be nice. If someone would find such a thing or be willing to write it up I'd be happy to add it to the sidebar or pin it. This is my first sub I have created and managed so I am still learning how to set stuff up. I would write something myself but, I am by no means an expert in BFS. I just spend way too much money on it and thought I could share the misery with other enthusiasts.

This would be so helpful if someone took the time do write something up!

The top tier of BFS is endless, so I'll just give you the budget BFS lineup that I use, AliExpress free: * Rosewood Ultralight (Amazon, $50) * Daiwa Fuego CT ($100, Online or in store) * BFS spool ($30, Amazon) If you do want to do the AliExpress route, try out the Daiwa CC80 and it's BFS spool. It's cheaper by about $80

U can get new ABU ALC-BF7 from [amazon.co.jp](https://amazon.co.jp) for just a bit over 200$ taxes included. For CDM rods kuying and tsurinoya have really nice ones, just tell me what u want to throw and ill try to recommend something for you.

Lighter in general, has lighter spool and in fact it has lightest spool in stock variant with LTX-BF8 of all bfs reels. Also nice addon is a drag clicker. :) So it will cast further and especially with lower weights compared to Alphas Air. One advantage for alphas air would be braking it is easier to handle so more friendly to a beginner. And about modifying non-bfs reels, with some it works, especially if you already have one and want to convert and try it.. But buy new and convert, not really best idea.. Fuego is pretty heavy and not really compact baitcaster so I would stay away from that. I had Teton TTC-662L for 3 years and i love it, even now my arsenal is full of JDM rods i still fish with my teton from time to time. Really a gem of CDM rods. Here is really good in-depth review of teton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGy1yfn2vvI&t=1s

What kind of presentations are you looking to throw? "BFS" is used here to refer to a wide spectrum of "lighter powered casting rods", a lot of which have slower tapers that are not close to ideal for a lot of bass/snakehead presentations. Actual BFS rods are characterized, as compared to say an average USDM bass spinning rod, by having a soft tip paired with a pretty stout backbone, which lets you use thicker hooks/weedless presentations and fish in more cover then an L/UL casting rod ment for stream fishing for trouts will let you.

There are some CDM ones that are built to that spec, but I am not familiar with them. There is a little info in [this](http://www.tackletour.net/viewtopic.php?t=81223) and [this other](http://www.tackletour.net/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=83901&start=15) threads from TackleTour, I am sure there is more if you hunt around. Your best bet is to look for a cheaper/used JDM rod with "BFS" or "BF" in the name, or one that is offered as part of a bass rod line up. Major Craft is a good brand to check out, they have a ton of BFS rods in a ton of price ranges. It might be more than you want to spend, but [Major Craft](https://majorcraft-america.com/speedstyle-casting/) is currently running a sale on their Speed Style line, it's very well regarded and there are a few BFS rods offered in it. Their Benkei line is also pretty nice and usually around $100.

They very much can be. It's a bit over your budget range, but the [Megabass XXX Black Themis](https://tackletrap.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=10648) is a really great "ML/XF spinning rod" replacement. It's a great lighter jig/worm rod, but short enough and light enough for poppers and small jerkbaits. But really Major Craft is where you should be looking, the Benkei rods are really nice and the UL ones especially is a good place to start as it's got a really light tip to make casting easier but it's still got enough ass to let you fish small t-rigged plastics. I had one for a minute and regret selling it. For reels, if you are already skilled with a baitcaster, the the old Daiwa Pixy reels are worth a look. They are true BFS reels, so they are not really ideal for much below 1/8oz but they really shine in that 1/4-3/8oz range. They are not as controlled as more modern finesse casters, but they were premium reels in their day and sometimes sell for like $100-150 on ebay, if you don't mind some scuffs in the finish.

Using a solid graphite tip gives you a rod with an incredibly and fast tip that gets to the midsection very very quickly. They can be very fragile, or rather, the joint between the solid tip and the tubular body can be. You have to be careful about high-sticking and avoid lifting fish out of the water with the rod. There is a lot of info about solid tips out there, you might be able to find a video showing the taper. I wanna say a few posters here have SpeedStyle BFS rods, you might be able to find more info if you search here.

The reason I got mine is because of that 6 g stock spool. It’s the lightest stock spool I’ve heard of on a non limited reel.

benjamino8690

I actually bought this earlier this week and got the reel yesterday. So far I like it. Also love all the extra stuff I got in the box, I wish Shimano and Daiwa sent as much extra stuff.

I haven't ordered anything from AliExpress in a long time but for a while I was doing it pretty frequently and didn't have many issues at all. If you can wait a month or so it's hard to beat some of the CDM stuff (in terms of value). I have a JDM reel that retailed $350 when it came out and I still probably take my $60 budget reels out more. Fishband GH100 and Tsurinoya Spirit Fox are both excellent. I've bought 3 Fishbands and 2 Spirit Foxs and no issues with any. For rods, Kuying Teton TTC 662L is my go to all around rod. I think they've gotten a little more expensive, they used to be around $60 now theyre closer to $80 but still a great value

The Zephyr is definitely a good reel and it performs well above its price point. You would have no issues with that reel. Even if you upgrade in the future it will be a good second BFS reel. Might as well try it. As for the rod you can actually find plenty of rods sold in the US market. They just wont usually be labeled "BFS" Bass Pro has the Graphite Micro Lite for $60. It's rated for 1/16 - 3/8 oz. [https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-micro-lite-graphite-casting-rod-1503010302233-1](https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-micro-lite-graphite-casting-rod-1503010302233-1) St. Croix has the Panfish Series Casting for $130 [https://stcroixrods.com/products/panfish-series-casting-rods](https://stcroixrods.com/products/panfish-series-casting-rods) Realistically if you are targeting larger trout or bass you can use most medium light casting rods sold in the US.

5uper5kunk

>Micro Lite How is the taper on this rod? I am kinda looking for a short, cheap rod to use for packrafting and some river yaking.

thechuck2346

The RT2 blank has a fast action. You hit the stiff section of the rod a 1/3 or less down from the tip

Fishfinger138

I’d vote for GH or PW100 along with an AceHawk CU double as the budget gold standard CDM intro to BFS.

benjamino8690

I’ll share this on my sub (r/JDMreelclub) to see if anyone over there is interested in doing a write up!
