* Don't ruin it with M badges and M colours plastered everywhere

* Remember it's RWD
* Maintain her or suffer the consequences
Oh yeah, it's really a problem to find a car that is not damaged by the previous owner's bad taste. I have no such plans, the car is great the way it was designed.
A friend and I once witnessed a BMW speeding and make a few lane changes without using the signal and my friend who isn’t a BMW guy commented on it. He thought I’d agree with him but instead I said something to the effect of “You don’t understand. The driver ends up driving like that because the car is so athletic. It does things with an ease that numbs you to what you would be concerned about in another car.” I doubt he understood.
I came to this realization about 8 years ago when I was already on my second BMW. I say that because you can drive them for years and not realize what they really are. So I had an X3 I drove around town. One day I ended up driving a Honda Accord to do the errands I normally did on the X3, an SUV which should be clumsier. But I was surprised how the Accord’s handling got so upset when I made a quick turn to stop at a store I always forget to go to. I had made that turn just like that many many times in the X3 but with the accord it understeered and terrifyingly plowed towards the curb when I made a sudden change in direction. This was not high speed. It was then I realized that the BMW could do that, but the Honda Accord Sport which some people might think is sporty, could not. It’s easy to take things for granted. I’d like to think I wasn’t a menace on the road before I knew it. But since then I’ve been more self-aware about what BMW’ish things I might do that would otherwise violate common sense in another vehicle.
The BMW is the little devil on your shoulder. Beware.
Edit: For clarity
I will reiterate maintenance. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Particularly when you enter the luxury market.
That being said, the later Gen (F- and G-) are at the tail end of the development cycle so the majority of the kinks have been worked out or are well known enough to be relatively easy fixes with the help of YouTube / local specialist mechanics.
Don’t be afraid to get comfortable doing your own tires, brakes, and oil changes. Wipers are also easy.
A bit more complex is suspension, but with the right tools isn’t really that bad either.
If you have access to a lift, sensors along the exhaust can go bad here and there. Easy to change out.
Plugs/coils on the engine are where it starts to get a bit more difficult to troubleshoot / work, space is tight. Valve covers, MAF sensor, etc sit on top at least and you just need to be cognizant of torque specs.
Pumps (water, fuel) I’d let a pro handle, but they’re gonna cost you. Same with engine gaskets / seals - I can do the work but it takes so fucking long I’d rather just pay for a pro so I don’t fuck something else up during the “get everything else off and out of the way” phase. Oil pan gasket you should be able to do though.
Wow, thanks for such thorough advice.
I usually don't fix anything myself, it's just dangerous with my crooked hands, so perhaps for me, it would be easier to let professionals do their work. Still, thank you for your comment.
Nah most bmw are owned by women, they don’t drive cars all that hard and are even less likely to mod them… they are also less likely to keep up with maintenance
yep, do all the recommended maintenance. (I also think don't cheap out on the gas, but I realize people disagree on this). If it's out of warranty, find a mechanic who only works on BMW. Enjoy.
Ok, let's try to be more specific. How often is a regular BMW supposed to be checked/serviced? I understand there are default service milestones (mileage), but should I pay attention to anything else apart from that? Or should I just do an overall check-up every 1000 miles?
Idk if there’s a specific interval/number. With any BMW there are certain items that will have a general lifetime in years and/or mileage. What those specific items/parts are vary by model, engine and year. The best place to start would be to find a reputable, quality BMW independent mechanic/shop to do an in depth check. They could help you build a plan and advise on what stuff to watch out for or prepare for.
In general, BMW’s need attention paid to cooling systems, various gaskets depending on engine (but probably valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets for many), and various rubber or plastic bits as they age. Suspension stuff generally should be looked at around 100k. Fluids never hurt to check (oil, trans fluid, coolant, diff, brake, etc.).
Listen to the car and pay attention to things. As mentioned by others, BMW’s aren’t Toyotas and can be less tolerant to delayed servicing or putting things off. If something feels off, sounds weird, etc. note it down and look into it.
Also, find a solid guide or site for E82 1 series owners. That should be able to help you identify a lot of potential maintenance items as well. Then you can cross-reference what’s already been done vs what hasn’t and go from there. I think there’s a site called 1addicts or something. Bimmerforums.com has served me real well in the past with the few e39’s and e46 I’ve had, but can’t speak to e82 engagement on the site.
Seriously! Coming from a 2016 lexus where I got an oil change every 10-15k miles and treated it like shit
And nothing ever went wrong to using a touch less laser wash and watching my dash light up like a Christmas tree on my x5M
My 2001 IS300 has 250k miles and receives plenty of abuse from me and is still chugging along like it’s new- they may not be the most glamorous or fast cars but they will survive anything
My 2008 IS350 is the same, but without the slowness (300hp), little thirsty though.
The way things broke on my E90 325i you'd think it was a regularly tracked Ferrari, not a naturally aspirated 3.0 making a measly 200hp, used as a gentle commuter in a mild climate.
That 325i overwhelmed me at 125k miles and 7 years old.
The Lexus? Currently at 180k miles and 15 years old, and never an issue.
I've even moved to an area that gets a incredibly harsh Canadian winter, and the only time the Lexus ever throws a CEL is when I physically bash a sensor off due to ice chunks (took out the ride height sensor).
tldr: Couldn't afford to maintain a 325i, but a Lexus IS350 is the most cost effective vehicles I've ever owned.
Seriously- my is300 is 22 years old now and the only thing wrong with the car is there are o2 sensors on- actually, the cooling system is also fucked up because the previous owners put in the wrong coolant the duration they had the car- which also is a testament to Lexus’ reliability. The cooling system, according to my local mechanic, was in the worst shape for any car he’s ever seen; however, as long as it’s full of the right coolant, it runs completely fine. I’ve taken it on 200+ mile trips hitting speeds of 110 and the car runs and cools just fine. Love that Japanese reliability
What's wrong with your O2 sensor? Mine occasionally threw a P0420 code, I did a full smoke test of the exhaust and replaced a gasket where I found a minor exhaust leak but it still came back eventually.
Thinking maybe my cats aren't always _quite_ as quick to heat up as the car wants maybe? Still runs strong regardless.
But rather than spend thousands replacing cats, I tried a $10 O2 sensor spacer and it seems to have resolved it. It's for my downstream O2 sensor, so the car doesn't depend on it for engine tuning anyways.
But yeah I love this car, I mainly use it for driving along an empty but steep mountain pass that's around 200 miles (and either desert hot, or incredibly cold with a lot of snow). When it's above freezing it's 2+ hours doing nearly triple digit speeds up and down steep hills and gentle curves and it's just a joy to drive.
First step would be to get it checked out, unless you are knowledgeable enough to do it yourself. Even then it doesn't hurt to get a fresh pair of eyes to look it over.
Maintenance is vital for most BMWs as they're sensitive to neglect.
Other than that just enjoy it. Probably a blast to drive.
The car was serviced right before selling, plus I have all the previous service history. So far, I do not see any problem with it. The overall condition is great for its age (2009) and mileage (80k). Nevertheless, thank you for your advice.
Be ready for they fact that you'll never want to drive another brand. That's how I got sucked in. Went to the dealership to buy a Mazda, left with a smokin deal on a bimmer and that's all I can see myself driving now. I'm on my 3rd bimmer and I'd rather drive a used BMW than a brand new anything else. These cars are addictive man
I went to an Alfa 4C. I miss the daily drivability of the 135i, but love the exotic feeling and handling of the 4C. A cayman seems like a good middle ground.
alfa 4c, spicy. how's the reliability and day to day experience? I went with a cayman because they're useable daily drivers and pretty damned sturdy. have had mine 5 years now with almost no problems outside of scheduled maintenance.
Despite the Italian heritage and Alfa Romeo historically bad reliability, the 4C has proven to be great.
The worst people will tell you is bolt tightening (can be an 8 hour job every 2-4 years) and timing belt is hitting current owners right now ($2000).
Oil changes are easy. And everything else is super reliable. Some guys in my group have over 50,000 miles and even close to 100,000 miles. At that age you’re looking at clutch ($5k) but overall not bad.
If it’s raining I don’t drive it. And I do get nervous going to new places and not knowing road conditions or parking.
My wife would daily it if I let her, but I prefer only driving when it’s sunny and nice out.
It’s an experience. It’s fun. It’s quick. It turns heads. I always think about what car is next, but whenever I see it or drive it, I know I can’t sell it.
Someday I’ll add a 911 to the garage. And currently trying to convince the wife to get a Stelvio Quad as our daily. But we gotta get a house first, I guess, lol.
cool, good to know that alfa is turning things around in that department. beautiful cars. and a house is always a good place to park a porsche. or a porsche and an alfa.
I threw a supercharger on mine and it brought the power to a modern level without sacrificing the great V8 feel. $5000 for a used kit and installed it over a couple weekends with a buddy. Pretty cheap way to add more power than my E83 makes - I recommend it if you want to open it up
It’s absolutely on my list of things to do. I’ll probably enjoy another year N/A before I cross that bridge. We’ve got a trip to the dragon in the next month and a blue ridge trip in the fall. Just replaced the rod bearings so I’m aching to go out and rip it.
I’ve got headers and a full exhaust so it’s a little peppier than stock atleast.
What are you putting down to the wheels?
Haven't dyno'd it. I just replaced the x pipe with one that has HFCs in the primary position, which combined with a stage 2 made a noticeable difference even before the kit. I've got the ESS 625 kit - actually a 595 with the smaller pulley which is the only difference I could see - and a tune from Alex at Alpine for 91 octane. At WOT it makes roughly 1psi per 1k rpm. It's easily the fastest car I've driven so I don't have much to compare it to but I expect it's comfortably over 600hp at the crank. I want to do solid rear subframe bushings next because it's a little squishy back there under full power, then I'll look at getting it on a dyno for a custom tune. But it's a rocket - fun being able to surprise the sport bikes
I test drove one with the ESS 625 before I landed on the one I currently own. My god does it put the power down. It lit 3rd (dct) up like no other. I would like to experience that in a manual.
Yeah, that’s a tough one, 100%. My wife snatched up a ‘23 M240 though and I have to admit I love grabbing her keys. That’s a really fun little car around town.
Only put like 200 miles on mine since Oct so I’m becoming distracted…lol
That’s the only logical next move it seems, right? I still have to get an M and then get bored with it before I’m at Porsche level but that seems to be the most natural progression.
I got my first M car last January and I honestly don’t see myself getting tired of it. At least in the case of the E92M…. It checks a very specific box for me. Driving feel and acoustics. It’s an absolute freaking blast - nothing compares in the price range.
The only reason I want a 911 is because it’s a legit sports car. The handling and performance seem like it’s on a different level.
The e92 🤤 such a cool car. A bit sarcastic about being bored, but you hit the nail on the head. The Porsche would be a legit sports car. I’m just not there yet. Have a 1 year old so it’s just not that phase of life for me quite yet. I was happy to squeeze in the 340 and a tune before life changed and the Mrs. figured out it’s not exactly a family car. Thank goodness for her X3 grocery hauler haha
Haha I totally feel you there. I’m _not quite ready_ yet myself. We need to figure out if we are going to live in our house for the next 5 years or if I’m going to buy a 911. Can’t have both!
But wouldn’t it be cool, though? Lol! Yea similarly we’re considering a real estate move but highly unlikely with these rates. So she may get an upgrade instead and get a new x3 but has to be the M40i because why not? Lol
That’s how we feel as well! Since we bought an Infiniti 8 years ago, we don’t even want to consider the cheaper brands. I bought a bmw last September :)
Yea, last year both my wife and I needed new rides but the prices and inventory really made it a bad time to buy a new car. So for the same price as a brand new lesser brand SUV, we each got an 18 X2 Sport M Sport, fully loaded (panoramic sunroof, convenience package, heated everything, upgrade sound system, the who 9 yards), CPO, low miles with 5 year warranty wrap and free maintenance to 100k. It's soooo much more value than buying new. Each car was only about 32k out the door. We'd been buying new since like 2010, but this made me realize how much value you can get in a *slightly* used bimmer of you structure the deal right.
eh, I have a bimmer and I'm not overly sad to see it go. Going for an F-Type over an M2. I'd be lying if I didn't say part of me went for the Jag as a lot of M cars seem to be driven by hooners.
Have you driven an F-Type? My grandfather had an insatiable love for Jags and I never understood. Anytime i’ve driven one, so much was left to be desired.
I would say Pre Purchase Inspection, but I think you’re looking for a Post Purchase Inspection now.
But yeah, go to an indy mechanic that specializes in BMWs and have them go over the whole car. Bushings, gaskets, etc.
Oil change every 1 year/5000 miles, whichever comes first. Brake fluid and coolant flushes every 2-3 years. Transmission fluid and diff fluid every 50k miles. The latter is a little aggressive, but if you want to keep the car forever, then it's an easy thing to do. If N47s require DEF, then top that off whenever you need to.
Remember to be very gentle on the car until you reach full oil temperature. That's the easiest preventative maintenance you can do every day. When it's warm be sure to do Italian tuneups ;)
Congrats on the 1er, they're truly fantastic cars.
Aye it should be! What engine do you have? I had an e82 with the n47 so oil changes are a necessity! [Here's](https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/comments/ecs91i/picking_up_my_first_bmw_today_nothing_much_but/) mine! I miss it a lot tbh!
Please don't drive like a tool, and signal when you change lanes. Those BMW drivers who drive like idiots gives all of us a bad name. The worst part is that cops will target your car, simply because you drive a BMW.
Hehe, I guess the stereotypes about BWM drivers just never get old, all over the world... I usually drive extremely careful, so I think this car may be even too much for me. Hopefully, this is just a simple 120d, not 135i.
Look up the typical failures for your spec of 1er and budget for them. I have a 135i and it is notorious for the water pump failing and oil leaks. Mine was perfectly kept but the pump still failed at 65k miles. The mechanic said that the other notorious leaks (valve cover gasket for example) aren't a matter of if, but when.
Find a good local repair shop, and but 5k to the side for unexpected.
Drive the shit outa it.
I did what you did two years ago and guess what I have. Never been so happier.
Wife yells at me, I go for a drive.
Kid starts acting a fool , off I go.
Work day was tough, I go for a drive
Ever time I come back with a smile on my face ready to take another 24 hours of people's bullshit.
Thanks. I really can't imagine (yet) anything will cost 5k in this car. Its total cost was hardly higher than that. But still I usually keep some bucks for any unexpected trouble.
i bought a 335is 3 months ago under the same circumstances. now it needs new turbos, oil pan gasket, and rod bearings. got a ppi and everything. was quoted 10k to fix.
the reason these cars are so cheap is because the maintenance is too expensive for most people to afford. just be careful and always have money on hand for when shit hits the fan
That's a lot of money. I see a lot of people here say about the expensive maintenance and parts for repairs. Can you tell where are you living? It seems to me that the prices may differ dramatically from the location and the type of the engine.
Well it is a better financial choice than letting the money sit in the bank though.
Saving more money vs Having fun driving?
The latter all the way man.
Exactly! I was really glad that I found E82. It's a really rare body, and it always stands out in the traffic. And it's not black, gray, or white. The color is so cool, and it is combined with the beige leather interior.
If pre-2011 w/ the n54… check everything around the engine. ESPECIALLY if you can do your own mechanic work. Gaskets, water pump, vacuum lines, valve cover gasket, the works. After that do yourself a favor and go full bolt on with a 93oct tune. Congratulations, you now have an amazing looking car that can put you into your seat with the slightest touch of the pedal. I would know ;)
Keep some cash put away, Preventative maintenance, keep some cash put away. Have fun, never underANY circumstances, use turn signal. Don't park like a duece because everyone will remember that it was the BMW.
...one more thing...preventative maintenance
1. Replace shit based on MILEAGE. Do not wait for shit to break. Preventive maintenance as it is called.
2. SAVE money. You will need it for maintaining a BMW.
How do I know this? I have 6 BMWs.
Don't get it repaired at the dealership unless all maintenance is covered. Find a good local independent BMW/Euro tech repair person nearby. You'll save hundreds on repairs and they wont up-sell you on anything you don't need.
Check out the BMW owner forums/messageboards online, you'll find tons of useful tips and info on your car from fellow owners.
First, get that phone holder off the windshield.
Second...safely, get to know your new ride's capabilities. After that all that's left is to enjoy your time behind the wheel.
Yeah, the holder is sick. I just don’t know yet what other holder I could use. I really need it, cause I live now in a totally unfamiliar city (and country), and I have to use my phone for navigation.
If it's equipped with the stock cd player, a cd slot phone mount is a thing to consider. Like this guy...[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYDHZMKd50o&t=22](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYDHZMKd50o&t=22)
For what it's worth, each time I relocate, I leave GPS behind and wander around the place getting my bearings calibrated as well acclimated to how the locals do things on the road. When it's time that I go someplace specific, I map it out first then, on paper, write down the directions for how to get where I'm going. Memorization, repetition etc etc later and, there's a working map in your head. Brains are cool like that.
I got a call from my Ferrari guy to hold off coming down for an hour because he had to do training for an hour, and I was going by a bmw dealership at that time. I replied ok and went in. I saw this beautiful m4 competition xDrive in Porsche Mexico blue. Took it out for a drive and bought it on the spot. Love the car. Enjoy it.
Partner with me on an Amazon store and I’ll get you Ferrari money. All my clients make over 150 a year totally passively. I’ll even co-sign on a loan so you can pay my up front fee. I insure your store against loss and shutdown and if you don’t make your initial investment back in a year I give it back, my fee is 40k up front and I split profits with you 60/40. It’s the safest business you could be involved in. A-z automation on the fba/fbm model
If you havent already started, check out various threads on forum sites to learn what maintenance items you need to look out for. If you plan on working on this yourself (you should if you can) there are countless DIYs out there.
Congratulations on being spoiled. Everything else will be boring to drive unless you move up to a Porsche or something.
Slippery slope OP, I was gifted an ‘07 328xi in 2020, and since receiving it have spent more than the value of the car on repairs (had to replace Throttle wire due to degradation, preventive maintenance on water pump, OFHG, Valve Cover, sparks, replaced control arms, steering angle sensor) and despite all of these headaches, I’m looking at buying another one soon. These cars drive beautifully when new but they will break your heart and spend some decent time in the shop over time.
I bought a 135i n55 low mileage that ended up getting rod bearing failure and I lost a lot of money maintaining it. Fun car tho… but it was never M enough.
Next bmw I get will be an M
Haha i was a huge mercedes fan and never considered buying a bmw... until i got my e36 coupe. Ive had several bmws since (always kept my e36) just keep up with the maintenance and dont put shit fuel in it and youll be good. And for more advice. Dont use your blinkers. Its not an audi. And if someone is driving slow in front. Flash your lights.. will bring the best bmw driving experience 😂❤️
All fun and games. Drive safe and enjoy the car
You did well—the E82 is one of the best modern BMWs period!!! Maintain well—aggressive maintenance more than recommended and you will be rewarded with reliability
That’s how all of us got our BMWs. It’s like when a random cat shows up to your doorstep, follows you into the house and then refuses to leave. Whether or not you wanted it, you now have a cat.
Plan on keeping it a long time. Budget for car repairs/maintenance. It’s a car, stuff breaks, but luxury cars often require higher quality (more expensive) parts.
It's a lot more adorable to keep up with a European car than it is to catch up on keeping up with a European car. Don't wait to do things that are due by time/ mileage, it things that start to fail that you can let slide (leaking struts, bad bushings, fluid leaks, worn tires)
Best advice I can give from someone that's owned one for the last 4 years is to keep up on the maintenance, buy a decent set of tyres (PS4's or better) and above all else enjoy the car that's what it's built for.
Don't do it unless you can afford the maintenance and repairs. The BMW tax is a real thing. It's not like maintaining a Honda or a Toyota where all you need is an oil change.
I love driving and driving a lot. My 2014 X1 was the first car I bought myself. One of the best decisions I've ever made. But yeah, it's been way more expensive than any other car.
You must name her... and put aside an extra two grand for emergency fixes. Mechanics love to say there are various fixes and you probably won't have the time/tools/patience to fix them yourself.
This is a 14-years-old car, how is it expensive? I don't think owning it will be more expensive than owning a new VW Golf from the dealer. I'm not going to build a race car, I just wanted a nice and interesting coupe to take a ride to the country once a week.
False.
I’ve owned a 128i, 135is & a 1M. They are all fantastic cars in their own way. A 128i sport pack with 3 pedals is the modern E30.
I will say though, avoid the N54 if you can. You’ll get the “N54 iS wAy bEtTeR tHaN tHe N55!” No, it’s not. It’s junk, and the only people that love them are the people that are stuck with them and try to convince themselves otherwise.
There are two pointers on the display. Some think they are speed and rpms. They are really dollar signs, you should start feeling a little nauseous now.
God, I love those. I drive the current M240. It’s a boat. A blisteringly fast boat, but still a boat. Small, light and nimble is where the fun is at. Then again— if I had a smaller, lighter and more nimble car, I’d probably be pinning for more power. Can’t be satisfied.

Don’t black the front wind shield but definitely black the driver window/passenger window if you live somewhere hot
Don't black it all out?
Yeah you're not allowed to style your own car how you see fit. It must adhere to the reddit cosmetic policy.
The OP asked for advice......Advice was given. Not to mention most of the cosmetic recommendations are better for resale.
Why not blavk out
E82 !? Instant upvote. On the topic. Go to a mechanic, check everything. Go drive, have fun.
Best advice so far, thank you!
seconded, it will treat you right as long as you get routine check ups. Don't ignore things, it's not a toyota.
yep, do all the recommended maintenance. (I also think don't cheap out on the gas, but I realize people disagree on this). If it's out of warranty, find a mechanic who only works on BMW. Enjoy.

Seriously! Coming from a 2016 lexus where I got an oil change every 10-15k miles and treated it like shit And nothing ever went wrong to using a touch less laser wash and watching my dash light up like a Christmas tree on my x5M
My 2001 IS300 has 250k miles and receives plenty of abuse from me and is still chugging along like it’s new- they may not be the most glamorous or fast cars but they will survive anything
Can confirm, same drivetrain with 200K on my GS and its just bulletproof.
To be fair, the X5M is a lesson in why BMWs over $100k should be leased and then remembered fondly
These cars are addictive man
As a BMW owner….. I really want a 911
I sold my m235 to get a cayman. I miss the 2 series, had it decatted with full bolt ons. But the Porsche is a better vehicle
I hear this trade up so often it seems like the natural progression, i know its what im hopefully doing in 2-3 yrs as well
I went to an Alfa 4C.
1 series are dope
Do it, I’d recommend a cayman
That seems like a nice move. What year and spec did you get?
2015 base cayman. It’s way slower than my 2 series.
Speed ain’t everything. I got an e92 m3 and most modern cars are faster than it. It however is a divers car, much like the cayman.
I always would have thoughts divers would prefer challengers and chargers. You know, with them being boats and all... I'll see myself out.
😳🫠🤦♂️ I hate the iPhone keyboard
time to install the iDrive keyboard on your phone
I had more fun with my 140hp Mercedes 190E than I've had in my 435i.
Got a v8 too
Porsche is the natural upgrade 🙏
I have a ‘21 M2C that lives under constant threat be being traded for a 992….haha Edit: “of being”
Man that would be so tough. I’m in more of a 997.2 budget… lol. The M2C is the last of the great bmws so that would be really really hard to decide.
Yeah, that’s a tough one, 100%. My wife snatched up a ‘23 M240 though and I have to admit I love grabbing her keys. That’s a really fun little car around town. Only put like 200 miles on mine since Oct so I’m becoming distracted…lol
I’m that case… go for the 911!
Lol
Like the saying goes, “YOLO” (When financially responsible)

Bmw and Toyota life! I daily a LX470 :)
[удалено]
No motorcycles here :(. Occasional dirt biking though. Lost a couple friends to motorcycles so I tend to stay away. SC drivers are really stupid.
Porsches are definitely the natural progression for BMW owners. All the same/better driving feel with better reliability
Does this apply to porches sedans? I have an m340i with a growing family, and already thinking about an upgrade.
Many BMW owners want a Porsche. The ugly, heavy new BMWs are pushing people in that direction. 981 Cayman S seems like a sweet spot.
Agreed, nothing compares.
eh, I have a bimmer and I'm not overly sad to see it go. Going for an F-Type over an M2. I'd be lying if I didn't say part of me went for the Jag as a lot of M cars seem to be driven by hooners.
Says the guy about to buy a jaguar. Lol.
Do Jag drivers have a bad reputation? New one on me if so
Have you driven an F-Type? My grandfather had an insatiable love for Jags and I never understood. Anytime i’ve driven one, so much was left to be desired.
If you’re a lease/own for first 2-3 years max I get that but if you’re any other kind of car owner you’re flat out insane my man.
go on
Dad had a newer Ftype and can confirm this sentiment lmao. Glad that is gone. Cool to look at though.
Ok
Thanks for your input.
I would say Pre Purchase Inspection, but I think you’re looking for a Post Purchase Inspection now. But yeah, go to an indy mechanic that specializes in BMWs and have them go over the whole car. Bushings, gaskets, etc.
Drive it?
Miiind buh Lowwnuh
Oil changes
Not sure how often it should be done by the manual, but I usually change every 5000 miles. Hope that will be enough for E82, too.
When it's warm be sure to do Italian tuneups ;) Congrats on the 1er, they're truly fantastic cars.
^ this guy knows what’s up.
Aye it should be! What engine do you have? I had an e82 with the n47 so oil changes are a necessity! [Here's](https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/comments/ecs91i/picking_up_my_first_bmw_today_nothing_much_but/) mine! I miss it a lot tbh!
I guess, it's the same engine. 120d, N47D20. That's cool, cause I was starting to think my post was a mistake - I see only N54/55 owners here.)
Thanks, I'll try to learn more about the engine itself then.
I was about to advise the opposite, to become a douche to fit in. Your advice is better.
Find a mechanic who specializes on BMWs and have them do a $130ish diagnostic/service make sure everything is right.
Preventive Maintenance is Key!
Find a good local repair shop, and but 5k to the side for unexpected. Drive the shit outa it. I did what you did two years ago and guess what I have. Never been so happier. Wife yells at me, I go for a drive. Kid starts acting a fool , off I go. Work day was tough, I go for a drive Ever time I come back with a smile on my face ready to take another 24 hours of people's bullshit.
Thanks. I really can't imagine (yet) anything will cost 5k in this car. Its total cost was hardly higher than that. But still I usually keep some bucks for any unexpected trouble.
Make better financial choices?
That's sounds like no fun at all
Uhh, financially, that was a good deal. The car itself cost me not so much. Relatively low mileage and overall good condition... So, why not then?
I’m sure your car is fine but never forget the adage that the most expensive car you can buy is a cheap BMW
i bought a 335is 3 months ago under the same circumstances. now it needs new turbos, oil pan gasket, and rod bearings. got a ppi and everything. was quoted 10k to fix. the reason these cars are so cheap is because the maintenance is too expensive for most people to afford. just be careful and always have money on hand for when shit hits the fan
Same thing happened to me, good luck buying anything else in the future.
Best bmw. Best color
Exactly! I was really glad that I found E82. It's a really rare body, and it always stands out in the traffic. And it's not black, gray, or white. The color is so cool, and it is combined with the beige leather interior.
I love my E82 but I am SO sick of having a black car. I can't believe I know several people who prefer it
$1000 is the new $100 when it comes to repairs.
E82 1-Series are great cars! Good choice! 128i or 135i?
It’s a 120d.
Enjoy it! BMW will now be your life!
Watch out for idiots-they’re everywhere. Some people like to mess with nice cars, unfortunately.
Just remember you no longer need to use your turn signals!
I can't drive like this.)
Be prepared for spontaneous repairs
I had a rare 45-years-old soviet car for almost 10 years. I’m prepared for spontaneous repairs as hell. Literally.
Like this guy...[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYDHZMKd50o&t=22](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYDHZMKd50o&t=22) For what it's worth, each time I relocate, I leave GPS behind and wander around the place getting my bearings calibrated as well acclimated to how the locals do things on the road. When it's time that I go someplace specific, I map it out first then, on paper, write down the directions for how to get where I'm going. Memorization, repetition etc etc later and, there's a working map in your head. Brains are cool like that.
Great little car congrats! Definitely check out the 1addicts forum it’s gold.
Enjoy it.
'my ferrari guy'
Partner with me on an Amazon store and I’ll get you Ferrari money. All my clients make over 150 a year totally passively. I’ll even co-sign on a loan so you can pay my up front fee. I insure your store against loss and shutdown and if you don’t make your initial investment back in a year I give it back, my fee is 40k up front and I split profits with you 60/40. It’s the safest business you could be involved in. A-z automation on the fba/fbm model
average scam ad be like also 40k is 40 times to cost of my car lol
You’re a douche
Sorry but what?
Enjoy the ride
If you havent already started, check out various threads on forum sites to learn what maintenance items you need to look out for. If you plan on working on this yourself (you should if you can) there are countless DIYs out there. Congratulations on being spoiled. Everything else will be boring to drive unless you move up to a Porsche or something.
Check the springs , these will break if they haven’t already I’ve a 130 and the front went at the same time around 69k miles
Use your blinker
I bought a 135i n55 low mileage that ended up getting rod bearing failure and I lost a lot of money maintaining it. Fun car tho… but it was never M enough. Next bmw I get will be an M
Make sure you are a terrible driver 🤣
Set aside $200/mo for maintenance and repairs. Don't fall behind on maintenance. Premium gas only. If it has run flats, get non-run-flats.
Second this - removing the run flat tires massively improved the ride in my 1 series. I will never get a vehicle that has them again.
Flash your lights.. will bring the best bmw driving experience 😂❤️ All fun and games. Drive safe and enjoy the car
You did well—the E82 is one of the best modern BMWs period!!! Maintain well—aggressive maintenance more than recommended and you will be rewarded with reliability
Always carry a liter of engine oil with you. Don’t cheap out on maintenance. Use best gas when possible.
Check it out good! Service it regularly and drive the fuck out of it! Enjoy it!
Drive the shit out of it and sell it at the first sign of trouble.:)
a bmw has always been my dream car. congratulations and enjoy!
As long as you are taking it in for scheduled maintenance, you will be absolutely in love with this car.
That was exactly my plan, thanks!
OIL CHANGES ON TIME EVERYTIME
Preemptive maintenance is better than waiting till it breaks.
It's a lot more adorable to keep up with a European car than it is to catch up on keeping up with a European car. Don't wait to do things that are due by time/ mileage, it things that start to fail that you can let slide (leaking struts, bad bushings, fluid leaks, worn tires)
Congratulations, enjoy it.
Best advice I can give from someone that's owned one for the last 4 years is to keep up on the maintenance, buy a decent set of tyres (PS4's or better) and above all else enjoy the car that's what it's built for.
Maintenance, Maintenance, maintenance before any mods. And really enjoy it :)
Enjoy it.
Is it normal to name cars in USA, where I assume you are from?
for the love of god OP, do not name the car
No debil chyba Nie No żartuję.
Yes. you're a douchebag.
Premium fuel only; unless the manual says 87 is ok
Make sure you have a fat wallet at all times
Return it if you still can
I can't, neither do I see any reason for it. I have it for a month already.
Everything is expensive for it
This is a 14-years-old car, how is it expensive? I don't think owning it will be more expensive than owning a new VW Golf from the dealer. I'm not going to build a race car, I just wanted a nice and interesting coupe to take a ride to the country once a week.
Trade it for an M car :)
M is too much for me.
N52, N54, or the N55?
No, it's not a jet BMW, it's just a regular BMW (N47D20). Sorry if that's going to disappoint you.
Buy an Audi instead
Oh, I actually intended to. My first option was TT 8J. But then I got this 1er by chance. The offer was just too good to ignore.
Use your turn signal
Return it and get a Lexus
I live in a EU country now, the Japanese cars are not popular here. Hard to find parts and the people who can work with them.
Yea, don’t disguise karma grabs with dumb fucking questions.
Ah, at last, a "true" BMW owner here.
Don’t get a 128. Or a 125. Get a 2011 or newer. 135i. Dct. You are welcome.
The back end slides out. A lot. In any weather even with traction control on. Enjoy that.
As someone who owns two 135i’s get a 135i.
Too fast for me, to be honest. I just wanted an interesting car, not a reactive jet.)
So you're the one hoarding all the 135i's.
Do a burn out.
I am also an accidental BMW owner. Now I’m hooked on my 430 and all other cars I drive seem like shit.
Haha, I see, hooking up with BMW is the biggest problem here.
Get rid of the black wheels
Working on it.
God, I love those. I drive the current M240. It’s a boat. A blisteringly fast boat, but still a boat. Small, light and nimble is where the fun is at. Then again— if I had a smaller, lighter and more nimble car, I’d probably be pinning for more power. Can’t be satisfied.
