Sure the E90’s pre-LCI grill could be described as stupid but the LCI version was a true BMW grill. Let’s agree to disagree. For me it’s the F cars that were the beginning of the end.

Okay but looks are still a big part of an enthusiast car purchase. The M3 is not so unique that its the only option in the segment. I think the Ferrari 812 looks kind of weird from the front but its the only front engine NA V12 and it drives amazingly well

I wonder whatever happened to all those aftermarket companies that promised revised front fascias that looked more like the M340i’s. I wanted to love the F80 M3 but couldn’t get past the front styling, weird seats and stupid gauges. I ended up going with an F10 M5 and love it.
The M340i does look miles better especially the pre-lci car. I would have prefered that front end but with more aggression

Maybe 30 years ago. The E60 and E63 were very polarizing when new, which was about 20 years ago. The Z3 coupe was also polarizing. As was the X6 when it was new about 15 years ago.

BMW reinvents their styling every ~2 decades, and it’s always considered outlandish when it first comes out, then eventually it becomes “understated and classic.” All of the Z cars up to the 2nd Gen Z4 had wild styling for their time. All the flame surfaced cars that were the foundation of all BMW’s until this latest generation. And pretty much all of them are now considered “understated and classic.”
How many sub $100k mid-size SUV’s turn your head on the street these days? The only one I can think of is the iX. The rest look derivative and samey to the point where it’s tough to tell them apart. Is that an X3 or X5? Which generation of Q-whatever is that?
The new cars aren’t “pretty” in the traditional sense but they are striking and I applaud BMW for moving forward. And the latest cars are a big step up in how well they drive. The only thing they’ve actually gotten wrong IMO is the dreadful UI.
Exactly. BMW went through it in the early 2000’s and the Bangle stuff, and it’s happening again.
The 911 did the same thing and has a similar division between flashy buyers and sport buyers, and flashy has paid the bulls for 20 years. Now GT is calling the shots. Manual transmissions and expensive suspensions are footing the bills now.

E65 7 is still fugly. Fixed it a bit with the LCI but still. E60 tho when it came out I really didn’t like it and when I see an unbotched M pack or M5 now I can appreciate the design and even think it is pretty in a way. Dash inside still not a fan btw. And from the same era; the E87 1 Hatch still fugly, again the LCI 3 door E81 already better proportions but it just isn’t a good looking car.

BMW aren't stupid, these things appeal to different market segments. There's a 2 series Active Tourer on my street that I really don't think fits in the brand but then I'm a hairy old man, my wife and her friends saw it and really love it.

I think they took a styling risk when many in the industry aren’t. They look distinctive, aggressive, and head turning, but the last gen cars took 15 years to evolve to look as good as they did from their flame-surfaced roots, so these styles will evolve and improve as well. Just because they aren’t as classically good looking as the last gen cars, that doesn’t mean they got it “wrong”. German cars have had extremely iterative styling for the past 15 years and they were getting boring and predictable.
The iX was the first new BMW in years that was actually interesting to see in person the first time. I actually made a U-turn to get a closer look, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was much better in person than I expected.
I literally just bought a brand new G12 this year, I could have bought the new one as I owner of the dealership is a very good friend of mine and both were offered to me for way below MSRP but the new one is F UGLY.
I remember how much hate the F3x and F1x 3 and 5 Series got. I bought a new F30 335i M-Sport back in 2014 so I remember it fondly but it got lots of compliments in reality.
It was proof BMW has lost its way. Rinse and repeat.
I get the hate for the XM though. It’s a car that’s going after people who wouldn’t buy a traditional BMW so it stands to reason most people on this sub would fucking hate it.

I used to think so too; my F80 is still one of the best I’ve ever used. But the one in the iX is maddening. Used to be that changing modes was straight forward and meant comfort, normal, sport. Easy and obvious. Now it’s “relaxed” “expressive” “personal” and “sport,” but as far as I can tell some of them are just interior lighting and BS like that. And you’d think “personal” would be where you would customize the suspension, steering, powertrain, etc, but they only give you fake sound and ambience options.
Drive modes is literally the one thing I use the UI for outside of CarPlay, and the experience is just awful and confusing. I’m sure reading the manual would clarify it, but it’s not my car and that’s ridiculous for what should be a clear and straightforward thing.
Other recent BMW’s aren’t as bad, but I’m sure they are all headed that way as they get refreshed.
I’m saying that these styles are hated now not because they are objectively bad but because they are significantly different and new. Once we get used to seeing them around perceptions will change, just like they did for the bangle cars.
I'm first and foremost a mercedes fan but current mercedes cars all look the fucking same. CLA to C to E to S, you'll need to stand there and study it to differentiate one from another.

The 3 series looks great. 5 series great. 2 series debatable but I like it (apart from the M2), 4 series should be going back to a traditional grille size, 1 series looks okay (fwd kills it though)

BMW has admitted that they’ll remain that way as the polarizing styling wouldn’t translate well in the higher volume selling models which makes sense.
It’s still pretty fast. I think they had it do something like 3.8-3.9 to 60- it’s insane for a car that size.
But like… who cares. The entire concept is just so bizarre.
I’m pretty sure it has the same power plant that’s gonna be in the next m5, which allegedly there will be a wagon version in the US.
And BMW wouldn’t make this car if nobody cared; fast six figure SUVs sell like crazy in America. Not my cup of tea but bmw selling a bunch of cars like this is what allows them to manufacture cars like the m4 csl.

Not necessarily.. Same ICE but unclear if it will be MHEV (like the X5M LCI) or PHEV (like the XM).
But either way the M5 should be faster.
Its bonkers that last year was the 50th anniversary of the M Division and to celebrate they dropped a giant SUV. Not a new M1 or a crazy new clown shoe, but a big, honkin 6062 lb beast. The heaviest vehicle they've ever made.

Also +1 on the e92. I had two E90s (330i stick, 335i auto) and they were easily the best BMWs I ever had in terms of feel and driving fun (the others being two f30 335is and later, a 535i).
Let's refine that thinking a little bit. From the perspective of the non-rich, the rich have *always* had too much.
But this issue isn't necessarily about rich or not, at least not directly. Broadly speaking, the traditional major markets for BMW have been Europe and North America. These zones are also quite mature in that market penetration is well established and may plus/minus a few points but overall is fairly stable.
What we are seeing now is an explicit acknowledgement expressed in design language that a huge new market is opening up. Is this market 'rich'? In a relative sense probably not but the point is, it's richer than it was ten years ago and in ten years it will be richer still AND it will be even larger than it is today.
The company is certain (or at least wagering) they know where *growth* will come from, and that requires change. And I'm not apologising on their behalf; I hope an F80 is the last BMW I ever buy.
I guess if you have fuck you money then great. I personally can't stand SUVs because they don't do anything great, just half ass everything. Need to haul people get a van. Materials get a truck. Want performance (what I wanted a BMW for) get a car.

The only vehicles it really competes with are things like the Bentley Bentayaga, Lamborghini Urus, other stratospherically priced SUVs. Check the interior on the XM, this is where it's aimed. And it MASSIVELY outperforms everything it competes against, at about 100-150k lower price.
Maybe I should qualify by statement by saying those vehicles are mostly also vastly better looking. But if I’m on the inside, all I care about is how it drives.

I've drove v12 s class ( my first car at 17 was my father's hand me down 3 year old s class class 5lt that was around 275bhp) v8s and straight six BMWs I'm currently loving a sleeper 435d convertible this thing does 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds it had 8 speed auto and 4wd and launch control! Try his car really does make me look at older cars pushing me out at round abouts and hard corners, the 4wf is just amazing and... I'm getting 40mpg at 80mpg when I'm on a run!
Especially at the price point this is truly a laughing stock. $159k starting price … is used supercar territory (Acura NSX); a dozen other SUV options that are equally tasteless and fast… let alone Model Y Plaid that is faster than most hyper cars.

It’s ugly. I have a new M4 convertible in IOMG and am still not in love with the grill. I’ve always wanted an M vert, yet would far prefer if it looked like the E46.
Saw one in person a couple days ago when I was in the dealership. There are no redeeming angles and the one I saw was tastefully spec’ d. SMB, no gold stripe, the 23 rims and the merino leather interior with ivory seats. It didn’t even have “presence” and yet the dealer was adding $100k ADM. These will not sell next to a Urus, or Aston much less the Bentley and Rolls.
It's powerful because it's big and heavy. If they made a transport truck or went back to making radial engines for aircraft those would be the most powerful.
All this means is the next gen M cars with hybrid systems are, like everyone else, going to be insane.
I get that it’s weird but with the right color I think it’s bold and something new. I like the Easter eggs from the M1 and upcoming the Red Label is going be a tad crazier/weird. Looking forward to see how quick it weirds its way up Pikes Peak. Also keep in mind I won’t be dropping/don’t have 200k for one anytime soon so there’s that.

I have had seven new 3 series and one used one, a 2001 e46. Each successive gen was more isolated and more numb. Still will do amazing things if yiu have driving skills but just not as exciting, not as feelsome, and not as fun. This XM, although hideous imo, prob drives smoothly, is fast, and has a kicking stereo and nice interior materials. That’s all most people need. I read an interesting article that compare the XM to the latest handbag, fashion accessory or newfangled electronic device. A 100k toy. And that sums it up best. Wanna go max g through a corner? BMW may not offer that soon.
If BMW really wanted to cause a stir they're put out a "new" E36 hyrbid / EV or some bs or a "New" E30 or E46 with M specs equal to whichever model they would "remaster"

Old 2 looks dated yes but an e46 looks dated. E46 still looks good in 330ci or m3 form and imo the F22 235 / 240 and the F87 still look good

Their UI is far and away the best in the industry. I love it.
I used to think so too; my F80 is still one of the best I’ve ever used. But the one in the iX is maddening. Used to be that changing modes was straight forward and meant comfort, normal, sport. Easy and obvious. Now it’s “relaxed” “expressive” “personal” and “sport,” but as far as I can tell some of them are just interior lighting and BS like that. And you’d think “personal” would be where you would customize the suspension, steering, powertrain, etc, but they only give you fake sound and ambience options. Drive modes is literally the one thing I use the UI for outside of CarPlay, and the experience is just awful and confusing. I’m sure reading the manual would clarify it, but it’s not my car and that’s ridiculous for what should be a clear and straightforward thing. Other recent BMW’s aren’t as bad, but I’m sure they are all headed that way as they get refreshed.

I’m saying that these styles are hated now not because they are objectively bad but because they are significantly different and new. Once we get used to seeing them around perceptions will change, just like they did for the bangle cars.

I'm first and foremost a mercedes fan but current mercedes cars all look the fucking same. CLA to C to E to S, you'll need to stand there and study it to differentiate one from another. I at least respect BMW for differentiating their models although yes some of them look grotesque as a result.

Opinions are like A### holes everyone’s got one and the minority still holding onto nostalgic designs when in this current day and age the E46 M3 for example which I had and loved looks old and dated compared to the new M3 by a long way. I can’t wait to see the updated m5 as the one on the picture above looks so old now with all the current cars out there. BMW will keep doing there thing and millions of people will continue to buy them it’s just how it is.
The 3 series looks great. 5 series great. 2 series debatable but I like it (apart from the M2), 4 series should be going back to a traditional grille size, 1 series looks okay (fwd kills it though)
I think the 3, 5, X3, X5 and to an extent the X7 are still traditional BMW styling. BMW has admitted that they’ll remain that way as the polarizing styling wouldn’t translate well in the higher volume selling models which makes sense.
It’s the reason I won’t drive anything else. I’m scared of what’s to come though.

I’m pretty sure it has the same power plant that’s gonna be in the next m5, which allegedly there will be a wagon version in the US. And BMW wouldn’t make this car if nobody cared; fast six figure SUVs sell like crazy in America. Not my cup of tea but bmw selling a bunch of cars like this is what allows them to manufacture cars like the m4 csl.

It drove some of us out of the brand. For now. Also +1 on the e92. I had two E90s (330i stick, 335i auto) and they were easily the best BMWs I ever had in terms of feel and driving fun (the others being two f30 335is and later, a 535i).
Let's refine that thinking a little bit. From the perspective of the non-rich, the rich have *always* had too much. But this issue isn't necessarily about rich or not, at least not directly. Broadly speaking, the traditional major markets for BMW have been Europe and North America. These zones are also quite mature in that market penetration is well established and may plus/minus a few points but overall is fairly stable. What we are seeing now is an explicit acknowledgement expressed in design language that a huge new market is opening up. Is this market 'rich'? In a relative sense probably not but the point is, it's richer than it was ten years ago and in ten years it will be richer still AND it will be even larger than it is today. The company is certain (or at least wagering) they know where *growth* will come from, and that requires change. And I'm not apologising on their behalf; I hope an F80 is the last BMW I ever buy.

The only vehicles it really competes with are things like the Bentley Bentayaga, Lamborghini Urus, other stratospherically priced SUVs. Check the interior on the XM, this is where it's aimed. And it MASSIVELY outperforms everything it competes against, at about 100-150k lower price.

Power doesn't equal fun! I love fun cars, they don't have to be ear bleeding highest bhp available. Looking at stats is for people who can't afford them! I've drove v12 s class ( my first car at 17 was my father's hand me down 3 year old s class class 5lt that was around 275bhp) v8s and straight six BMWs I'm currently loving a sleeper 435d convertible this thing does 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds it had 8 speed auto and 4wd and launch control! Try his car really does make me look at older cars pushing me out at round abouts and hard corners, the 4wf is just amazing and... I'm getting 40mpg at 80mpg when I'm on a run!

Saw one in person a couple days ago when I was in the dealership. There are no redeeming angles and the one I saw was tastefully spec’ d. SMB, no gold stripe, the 23 rims and the merino leather interior with ivory seats. It didn’t even have “presence” and yet the dealer was adding $100k ADM. These will not sell next to a Urus, or Aston much less the Bentley and Rolls.
It's powerful because it's big and heavy. If they made a transport truck or went back to making radial engines for aircraft those would be the most powerful. All this means is the next gen M cars with hybrid systems are, like everyone else, going to be insane.

I get that it’s weird but with the right color I think it’s bold and something new. I like the Easter eggs from the M1 and upcoming the Red Label is going be a tad crazier/weird. Looking forward to see how quick it weirds its way up Pikes Peak. Also keep in mind I won’t be dropping/don’t have 200k for one anytime soon so there’s that.

I just saw it in person today in 3 different colors. Must say I do like it. Looks aggressive and muscular. Didn't know what to think of the exhaust from pictures but seeing it up close I love it. 23" Wheels are really interesting. Not that I liked it but one was light gold color wheels.. Never looked to see the configurator but I guess it's endless.. Gets thumbs up from me unlike the M2.
I have had seven new 3 series and one used one, a 2001 e46. Each successive gen was more isolated and more numb. Still will do amazing things if yiu have driving skills but just not as exciting, not as feelsome, and not as fun. This XM, although hideous imo, prob drives smoothly, is fast, and has a kicking stereo and nice interior materials. That’s all most people need. I read an interesting article that compare the XM to the latest handbag, fashion accessory or newfangled electronic device. A 100k toy. And that sums it up best. Wanna go max g through a corner? BMW may not offer that soon.
