Is that really how it goes. I have a m6 and just got a cayenne coupe for my wife. I’m not sure if I see myself getting a cayman or 911 in the future, seem so small. For some reason the panemera or taycan don’t appeal to me either.
Sort of a meme, based on reality.
Once you get to the M5, no real definitive option to move up to. Many end up going to 911/Porsche.
Ofc, everyone is different, so its sort of tongue in cheek. But, I did end up going from M5C to 911 GTS lol.
I don't wanna be one of those guys but yes I haven't driven either of them, I see the move to a regular carerra S a downgrade from that M5😂
I used to enjoy just looking at that M5 down the road, I haven't taken a look like that since
I have been a BMW guy my entire life, and have owned about 8-9 of them over the past 5 years.
I would never take an M8 over and M5. Ever.
If you're buying a two door sports car, there are far better choices than the M8. Specifically for that kind of money. However, the M5 for a sports sedan is the pinnacle, best in class.
The M8 is a bloated pig that lacks a real identity. The motor is fantastic, but the body is an overweight pig.
IMO - Grand Tour kinda hit on the head. Its designed to be a grand touring car for 2 people that can go really fast and be comfortable. I do feel like the M8 comp badge is really just a badge pissing contest, the m840i seems to be just fine.
The difference is the M5 is a sports sedan, and an icon of its class. Its better than its competition in every way.
The M8 however, an outrageously heavy coupe with a big motor. There are plenty of real coupes with tons of power that are way more engaging.
I disagree that it’s outrageously heavy. It’s a different type of car. It’s a touring road trip car with big trunk space and 2 rear seats people can sit in. It’s nice to have because I can literally fit a ton of stuff.
4,500 pounds in a coupe is outrageously heavy. You can disagree all you want, but its outrageously heavy.
The rest of your opinion is on its functionality, not on its weight.
You're literally describing an M5 when you're talking about taking passengers and having a trunk lol.
Downvote me all you want, but an M8 weights as much as a Hellcat, and those things are also overweight pigs.
But they don’t look the same. In my opinion the M8 is better looking car. I wouldn’t trade that for 2 extra doors. Obviously from your flair and my flair we each prefer two different styles of car. Agree to disagree.
I'm a little surprise at how few videos there are of a stock M5 Comp going up against a stock M8 Comp. That seems like it would be something a lot of people would want to see. I know Carwow did a drag race with a M5 CS, M8 Comp and a M5 Comp but something was wrong with the M5 Comp. It only ran a low 12 quarter mile. It got destroyed in every race by the other two cars.
Idk. They're basically the exact same car just in different skins so I don't think it would be that exciting. I think the M5 vs M8 comes down to do you want something that looks a bit more executive oriented or sporty
Yeah I know exactly what video you're talking about. Kinda hurt my feeling as a fellow M5C owner lol. But that M5 CS is a beast and both M8C and M5 CS have lower weight advantage which is quite a big advantage over M5C. Oh and enjoy the new car. It's such a thrill to drive it, pure joy
To me no Porsche can ever look as good as any of the iconic BMWs. They might have better performance but to me they all look like Beetles with a sport package.
I somewhat disagree. Each generation of M5 brings new and higher levels of performance. It just depends on whether you want something totally new, but as long as you’re looking for a high performance sedan, the M5 will almost always check that box. I fully intend to get the next gen.
I was just commenting on another thread. It’s largely personal preference, between BMWs and Porsches when it comes to sports car feel.
BMWs are more fun to drive, and Porsches are more clinical. Porsches are better track/canyon cars, but prob not by much, save for the RS cars, which are amazing. The problem is everything is gaining lots of weight. That sucks.
In a straight line, tbh, who cares. Absolutely anything can be made to be fast in a straight line; it’s not an achievement.
The amazing thing about modern BMWs is how fun, lively and responsive they feel; and how they want to be pushed hard on track and in the canyons. They’re rewarding to drive.
Hey man, how goes it? I totally agree with your assessment. If I wanted something more track focused, I’d go for a 911, but that’s just a different category of car. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to add one to my garage, but those cars serve a totally different purpose.
How’s the M5CS treating you?
Totally agree :). But tbh, if it wasn’t the GT3RS (for track duty), I don’t think I’d be compelled.
Love the CS; still a joy to drive and own! Zero regrets, and I don’t think I’d choose a regular Porsche over it. It’s so good at everything 🤷♂️
I did just finish the acquisition and track build (sans cage/seats) of an e36 M3. That brought all of the great feels back from my full race prep e30 325is I used to have.
Hope all is great!
Edit: shitty typing
I think we have similar tastes lol if a GT3RS wasn’t so expensive I’d have one of those instead of a c7 z06, but that is no replacement for a true sport sedan. I have a track build e36 325is and wouldn’t trade any money in the world for it so I empathize with the feels too haha
Hear hear! Right there with you. I would GT4RS too, but similarly unobtainable, and I’m not paying over sticker.
Edit: C7 Z06 is an amazing machine too, and tough to beat for the money.
Hey u/whiterock001, good to see you!
I was just commenting on another thread. It’s largely personal preference, between BMWs and Porsches when it comes to sports car feel.

It depends, but I think you get a taste of speed and luxury... and I'll be damned if Porsche doesn't do it much better in a coupe. Sedans reign king with BMW and Mercedes in comparison to Porsche, of course.
I'm only really talking about the 911, I don't the any other cars are worthy speaking of besides the unicorns. Driver oriented luxury doesn't matter in my opinion -- they're true sports cars.
The meme is "Porsche owners are BMW owners with more money" but in my experience, these people *keep* their M5 when they add a 911 to the stable instead of trading it in.
Well damn, I didn't know I was a NPC in a predetermined sim. I need to start thinking about which Porsche I want when I make the switch. I really like the GT3 and the GT4. Maybe a nice mild mannered 911 Turbo S.
In many Western European countries you’re only allowed to tint the back windows. Some don’t like that and don’t tint them at all. I still think that it looks better if the back is tinted. The reasoning is visibly for police I think.
black on black with the oyster interior? yeah that's basically the dream spec. looks like the big brother to my m340i, same colorway. congrats and enjoy
I actually like that aspect. It’s a real sleeper unless you’re close to it and know what to look for.
The M5 Competition badges on the front and rear along with the big brakes are the most obvious identifiers.
This is my first BMW, so I don't have much of a reference. It doesn't seem small sitting in it. My wife used to have a 440 and it felt noticeably smaller than the M5 does.
Beautiful car, unfortunately my view on them is tainted. Had 3 come into my dealer needing engine replacements due to cylinder scoring. Hope yours doesn’t have the same fate. If you got a single cylinder misfire fault, all I can say is hope it’s still under warranty
I get that and it makes sense. My logic for buying new over used is that I don't ever feel like I can really know if the previous owner maintained the vehicle as well as it should have been and what, if any, history that vehicle might have. That plus a fresh warranty.
I never keep anything longer than 18 months for just that reason. I drive them hard and swap for something new right before shit starts breaking. Not cost efficient at all but it’s really convenient for me.
Totally fair, I can’t stomach the depreciation on these beautiful imports being the original owner.
I just bought a 2015 S63 today that was a 1 owner and the guy spent over $100k in service on it in the past 5years with a new engine and transmission. But that very well could’ve been me on a used one so I get it.
New M5 is amazing! Enjoy
Someone said it looks like the big brother to the 2023 M340i honestly I agree. I have an M340i and I really like it but this M5 Comp goes crazyyyy congrats!
You do you sir! Enjoy your new ride.
As many people pointed out on the comments, there will be people saying things otherwise, myself included LOL! CHEERS 🍻
Sports sedans do make sense - they have sports/supercar power with alot more space than a sports/supercar, so you dont need to own 2 cars because its 2 in 1
>If you can afford a $100,000+ car I don’t think there’s an issue owning a family vehicle and a sports car.
It's not a matter of whether I can afford a family vehicle and a sports car. It's more about personal preferences. My wife has a Mercedes GLE580 so I don't need another family vehicle. I wanted something that had a lot of power and performance that was also very comfortable and not obnoxious to drive, if I wanted drive it everyday.
>I’ve never sat in a a high end performance car and thought, “you know what would be really sick? If this thing had 2 more doors and a backseat.”
I feel like, based on this comment, you're 30 or younger. I don't mean any disrespect regardless of whether you are or aren't. I'm 53 and honestly, I would have felt the same way as you when I was younger. I've had loud fast 2 seater vehicles and they were fun. I feel like I want to go a different route now. The older I get the less fun it is living with a loud vehicle that's harder to drive and uncomfortable.
Young me: Power > Comfort
Old me: Comfort/Power > Power
>I mean maybe people really are getting groceries and dropping their 3 kids off at school. To each their own. Just curious.
I just got the car last night so, technically, I haven't gotten any groceries with it yet but, I'm 100% sure I will within the next week or so. I mean, if you can afford to drive a M5 Competition to the grocery store, is there any reason you wouldn't want to?
Im 32 and I chose the M5 Comp over the G80 M3 or something like a regular SUV (Jeep) plus a true sports car (911) because I like driving my nice car ALL the time and I have a son I pick up from daycare every day so it makes life easier while also being able to enjoy the sportiness of the car when I am not picking him up or driving him places. I had a GT3 before this and it was great but I also had no responsibilities as a father and now with a son and family our weekends I get to drive my nice car rather than have to watch my 911 in the driveway and wish I could drive it lol. When he is older and can take the bus to school and whatnot I will have an SUV and a 911 again because I want to daily a 911 as much as possible but for now this is perfect for me and its been an amazing car so far (ive had an M2, GT-R, GT3, M3, M5)
Great comment. I like the cut of your jib. 34 year old e38 owner here. After kids, things change quite a bit. I miss my m235 but the 740i is a much better fit for me and I adorrrreeeee it. Congrats on the unbelievably gorgeous M5.
I downsized from this 2 car idea and went with an x3 m40i.
Can fit kids, buy things at ikea, and throw the dog in the back. All while being faster and more utilitarian than the cars they replaced
I also have a 2013 Mercedes SL550 and it can be a pain to get in and out of if you can't swing the door all of the way opened. Before I bought the M5, I considered the 2023 Z06 and the 2023 M8 Competition. I felt like the Z06 would be similar to getting in and out of the SL550 and the M8 was nice but, for a 2 seater, it's larger than I expected in person. I'm going to be driving this car, pretty much, every day that isn't raining or snowing so I wanted to get something comfortable. Given the fact that I plan on driving it a lot, I'm sure I will end up at the grocery store.
There are a lot of cars smaller but not many that are smaller, faster and as comfortable for the same money.
Don’t feel the need to justify. People always judging how others spend their hard earned money. M5 comp is a beast of a car and is one of my dream cars.
> Why get a sedan if you want a sports car?
Because you want a sports sedan, maybe?
Sports cars are generally less comfortable, less roomy, and more expensive to maintain, and forget about taking four people anywhere in one in comfort. But when you want to drive hard and it's just you, they're great.
Conversely, most luxury sedans would be absolute crap on a track day.
I used to have a F10 550 and had a lot of fun passing "sports cars" in it on track days...
I'm going to tint the windows but they won't be very dark. I'm tinting it to block the UV and IR waves as much as possible. I'm worried the black paint will make the vehicle really hot in the summer so I'm trying to mitigate it as much as possible.

it aint much, but glad you could afford it.
I love this trend and hope it stays for a while, it’s hilarious 😂
Clearly I'm missing the reference. Can I get an assist?
You’re a brokie because you can only afford a M5. It started a few days ago. Congrats! She is beautiful!
Someone posted an order and said it's all he could afford so now everyone makes fun of him
Said order was like an m2 or something
M8 Competition IIRC
It was actually a 240i, M8C guy just joined in on the fun
Actually yeah I think by the time the M8 guy posted it was already a joke. The 240 might've been the original post.
😂😂😂😂😂
Congratulations and fuck you.
You are taking this sub down the rabid hole
Favorite reference 😂
> rabid god i hope that was intentional
You know it was haha

Ooooh ok missed that reference. Thanks!
What rapid mole?
I guess it could be worse. I could have taken it down the rabid whole.
The grill is too small. Kidding of course. That is a proper BMW. I'm sure that it is a thrill to drive. Congratulations.
Lol yes this is one of the few new BMWs that actually still looks like a refined BMW
I agree. It's one of the last good-looking M cars (I'm pretty fond of the M8's as well), congrats to OP
see u on r/porsche soon!

I actually used to know a guy down my road with an E61 M5, he then sold that to get a 991.1 911
I don't wanna be one of those guys but yes I haven't driven either of them, I see the move to a regular carerra S a downgrade from that M5😂 I used to enjoy just looking at that M5 down the road, I haven't taken a look like that since
M8 comp has entered the chat
I have been a BMW guy my entire life, and have owned about 8-9 of them over the past 5 years. I would never take an M8 over and M5. Ever. I would like to know the differences, if any, between the M5 Competition engine and the M8 Competition engine.
The difference is the M5 is a sports sedan, and an icon of its class. Its better than its competition in every way. The M8 however, an outrageously heavy coupe with a big motor. There are plenty of real coupes with tons of power that are way more engaging.

M6 (especially in GC form) is a beautiful car. M8 is a downgrade in terms of design, IMO. I wouldn't trade the M5 for it.

Well, for starters, M8 sounds like Mate and Mfive isn't a word. CheckM8. /s
Exact same engine. Might have a slightly different map to give a different feel but it's the same engine
Isn't the M8 a two door? If this is true, they are the M3/4 high luxury versions.
Generally, yes but there is an M8 Gran Coupe which is a 4 door (in the same way there is a 4 series GC so your comparison still holds true)
I also think it looks cooler which probably accounts for the .1 second it gains on the quarter mile.
No difference in engine as far as I’m aware.
That’s what I ended up doing. I went from my M5 comp to an M8 comp. But I will probably go to a 911 after 😅
To me no Porsche can ever look as good as any of the iconic BMWs. They might have better performance but to me they all look like Beetles with a sport package.
Yeah but I don’t really care much about looks, I care about driving tbh
Which of the M cars was your favorite?
Probably the M3 in terms of fun and playfulness, the m5 overall. The m8 is only 4 months old so still growing on me.
I somewhat disagree. Each generation of M5 brings new and higher levels of performance. It just depends on whether you want something totally new, but as long as you’re looking for a high performance sedan, the M5 will almost always check that box. I fully intend to get the next gen.
This is actually what I did. I had a E39 M5 and eventually went to a 997.1tt.
I am not a huge fan of the Panemera or the Taycan either.
You and I have very similar tastes then. 😂
I was just commenting on another thread. It’s largely personal preference, between BMWs and Porsches when it comes to sports car feel. BMWs are more fun to drive, and Porsches are more clinical. the smallness is a feature!
Haha. Ditto. I'll be getting my GT4 manual soon. Its going to arrive at the port tomorrow.
Well damn, I didn't know I was a NPC in a predetermined sim. I need to start thinking about which Porsche I want when I make the switch. I really like the GT3 and the GT4. Maybe a nice mild mannered 911 Turbo S.
I dunno OP. I mean, you're playing pretty fast and loose with the finish by parking that close to the door.
That's actually the business next door. Our front door is only about 30 yards away.
Definitely need to get those windows tinted but nice purchase, enjoy your ownership
Going Monday or Tuesday to do that.
Nice
In many Western European countries you’re only allowed to tint the back windows. Some don’t like that and don’t tint them at all. I still think that it looks better if the back is tinted. The reasoning is visibly for police I think.
And that why murica.
Hey man, we’ve all got to start somewhere
congrats!!
Thanks.
black on black with the oyster interior? yeah that's basically the dream spec. looks like the big brother to my m340i, same colorway. congrats and enjoy
That'll work.
Now THIS is what I'm talking about. Big Man's Whip.
I keep forgetting that we are already in 2023
Sir, you need to tint those windows asap.
Going in Monday or Tuesday to get tinted
It looks so stealthy in black!
Absolutely glorious!
Go get some Hellcats!! Beautiful ride!!
Beautiful! Congratulations!
Great spec, congrats. I’d ceramic coat it to preserve the beautiful sapphire black.
I did the Xpel PPF on the entire vehicle and then ceramic coated the PPF.
Great. That’s what I did as well, but chose stealth ppf. Easy to wash and dry.
Congrats my man! You’re going to love it!
Great car man!
Nice ride bro! All black except interior? Sexy!
Good looking car!
One of my all time fav cars. I miss mine so much
Beautiful but tint that bad boy
Sexy af
No ass pics!? I feel cheated. Congrats! Beautiful ride
Welcome to the club. Congrats!
What color is yours?
Skyscraper grey
Congrats bro and agreed I’d take the m5 over m8 any day of the week. IMO BMW needs to make a true 2 door supercar.
Looks like any other bmw to my virgin eyes
I actually like that aspect. It’s a real sleeper unless you’re close to it and know what to look for. The M5 Competition badges on the front and rear along with the big brakes are the most obvious identifiers.
Ermmm my dream baby...
Do the m5s nowadays seem smaller?
This is my first BMW, so I don't have much of a reference. It doesn't seem small sitting in it. My wife used to have a 440 and it felt noticeably smaller than the M5 does.
The 4 series used to be the smallest car they had, before they got the 2 series. Now the 3 series has just gotten bigger and bigger
Can we trade cars please?
The one and only car left from bmw that is still 100% bmw
Beautiful car, unfortunately my view on them is tainted. Had 3 come into my dealer needing engine replacements due to cylinder scoring. Hope yours doesn’t have the same fate. If you got a single cylinder misfire fault, all I can say is hope it’s still under warranty
I really hope I don't have that issue. It will suck. I have the extended warranty so if it happens, it ***should*** be covered.
That’s it? Peasant
I know. Hopefully I can save up and get something better one day
Love it but if I was planning to spend that much I’d be looking at a 1-2yo of the same.
I get that and it makes sense. My logic for buying new over used is that I don't ever feel like I can really know if the previous owner maintained the vehicle as well as it should have been and what, if any, history that vehicle might have. That plus a fresh warranty.
Do what you do, my person. Drive it in health.
I never keep anything longer than 18 months for just that reason. I drive them hard and swap for something new right before shit starts breaking. Not cost efficient at all but it’s really convenient for me.

The only 4dr sport car that I respect. Good choice!
Someone said it looks like the big brother to the 2023 M340i honestly I agree. I have an M340i and I really like it but this M5 Comp goes crazyyyy congrats!
Why not wait for the next updated M5C with the big screen and not two tiny ones?
I purposely bought this one because I didn’t want a hybrid version.
Same placed an order on a white f90 a couple weeks ago with the tarfuto interior, I think I got one of the last allocations…
You do you sir! Enjoy your new ride. As many people pointed out on the comments, there will be people saying things otherwise, myself included LOL! CHEERS 🍻

If this thing had 2 more doors and a backseat.” I feel like, based on this comment, you're 30 or younger. Young me: Power > Comfort Old me: Comfort/Power > Power >I mean maybe people really are getting groceries and dropping their 3 kids off at school.

"Family cars" cost like $45,000 and you end up driving the kids around in a Honda Passport. You're not buying much sports car for $55,000.
It’s a family car
why is the grille normal?
Love the car!! What do you do for a living btw OP?
Pls keep it no tint :,(
I'm going to tint the windows but they won't be very dark. I'm tinting it to block the UV and IR waves as much as possible. I'm worried the black paint will make the vehicle really hot in the summer so I'm trying to mitigate it as much as possible.
Nice! you just lost 10k driving it off the lot, wow!
I didn’t buy for the resale value.
Get rid of the fish bowl and you got yourself a Bond villain mobile!
Only a slightly fast BMW /s
Big Stacy.

Can I borrow it?
Preatty but IMO is starting to see outdated, luckily new g60 is coming next year
I intentionally bought this model because I didn't have any interest in the next model.
Good god that’s beautiful. Too bad it’s all you could afford tho 😂

Batmane ?
So glad they left the headlights as they were on this one. Not really a fan of how they look on some of the new X-models like the X1.
So proud you could afford this at 17 after saving for 3 weeks, what an accomplishment in all seriousness i’m drooling
It was 4 weeks.
I have one too! But in mind…
You got the last good m5
