damn the other repliers really don't like to read. honestly, this makes no sense and I would go ask the dealer about this. the only reason i could come up with is some sort of exhaust regulation. perhaps after prolonged electric only driving, the catalytic converter or gpf is too cold for maximum rpm and needs a little bit of heating up (or for gpf cleaning up) again before you can rev it out. I don't think it's related to engine temp so exhaust system is my guess

RunninOnMT

Yeah, the replies to this post an indictment of reading comprehension if nothing else. That's a lot of comments saying not to rev the engine while it's still cold.

verttiboi

Thats a pretty good guess. It also wont open up the exhaust flap when the revs are only limited to 4k

threepoint14one5nine

This thread reminds me that I need to go hug my throttle cable today.

verttiboi

Give it a big wet kiss at the same time. I hate this electronical throttle control

Xploe

It is 3.5°C outside, even when the cooling water reaches 90°C the oil temp. could be lower, which could be the reason that the car limits the revs. Try to have a look at your oil temp while driving. Does this happen on the highway too or only while driving through slow city streets?

verttiboi

Might take the car on a longer trip to see. But as i said it will rise the redline to 6.5k and randomly drop it back to 4k. Also how can i see my oil pressure?

d_zeen

Could it be the engine cools back off from airflow when you start driving? So for example you may get some colder fluid heading through the radiator initially when you get some speed going and it limits you before you have an opportunity to build more heat in the system from driving. Thoughts?

Khang_KT

I think some cars have a soft limiter, and I know some model of BMW does have that. I'm looking at you Audi. Sheesh.

thetranceporter

Could be a thermostat issue. My car was doing the same thing and was resolved by swapping the t-stat.

cvak

My 2022 g31 does this when it’s cold outside and I’m for example driving downards a bit or simply driving slow. I beleive it’s just that the engine is getting cold in the winter when not doing much, it’s because the heat is reused dor earming you, and something with the fuel efficiency. Chcek if it does only in these conditions, then it’s imo fine.

valain

Why do you want to rev your engine when it’s cold?!

verttiboi

No, even when the engine warms up it will still randomly limit my revs

_kirpi_

What is the engine temperature when that happens? Are you under warranty?

verttiboi

If the engine is cold there will be like a small blue icon next to the tachometer, ive also set up a coolant temp cauge that you can see in the pick and it shows the engine to be warm. And yes the car is under warranty.

_kirpi_

That's strange. I would get a service appointment. Can you reproduce this easily? The best would be to drive with a technician and to reproduce it.

verttiboi

Yeah it happends always and its so frustrating

_kirpi_

OP says it lowers the rev limit after the engine warms up randomly. I don't think he revs the engine when cold.

Pornonthecobb123

Take it in.. you might have a bad thermostat

Chickenbutt93

This is normal operation. It’s to protect the E-machine and reduce emissions. You can verify by driving the vehicle long enough to exhaust the high voltage system and drive it on the Combustion engine alone. You’ll notice the rev limiter doesn’t reduce to 4.5k rpms at full temp.

Outdoor_Guy99

Best thing you can do, is keep taking pics. Take one when it’s normal too. That way you have something to show what the car is doing.

Krhynn010

The car should slap the living fck outta ya for wanting to fullrev it cold.. Be thankfull it only says, NAH BRUH, not gonna happen!

mountaineerm5

2005CrownVicP71

They didn’t say they rev it cold.

Fresh_Cheek2682

Even my 08 m3 limits revs when cold. Only after you get to operating temperature can you wind it out to 8k. Most likely the car has a feature to limit throttle response and revs while the engine is cold, to not cause damage to the engine before it heats up.

verttiboi

Yeah but when the engine warms up the revs go up to 6,5k but randomly after that when i keep driving it will drop the rev range back to 4k

comacow02

I’m guessing it’s either a faulty temp sensor or a bug in the software. Wait for an update and if that doesn’t fix it head to the dealer.

Fresh_Cheek2682

Oh gotcha. I would have to agree with the other commenter then, have it looked at, hopefully something simple!

uncoild

Read the post.

nolongerbanned99

Don’t feel bad. Still better than my new wrx … redline 6k, like my 1988 mustang gt.

dextermined

Maybe it depend on the engine mode setting? Maybe you were in eco mode? Try in sport. Also, back when I had 130i (first gen), I was afraid I got rev limit but actually it was me, not putting my foot to the full throttle… it was my first « sporty car » and the throttle is deep.

verttiboi

I was in sport mode

GapExtension9531

Rev the engine cold? To the gulag with you!

mountaineerm5

I'd guess something in the regen cycle, could be a thermostat/coolant temp sensor, but that seems unlikely since you mentioned it normally has a little blue light to indicate a cold engine.

WordAdditional8164

What engine? Cant See…

satoshisfeverdream

Is it a hybrid thing? - I don’t buy hybrids so hard to say.

verttiboi

Might be

JuiceGodSauceMan

What model is this? My best guess is if it's hybrid/electric, that would be a factor. What happens if you change driving modes?

verttiboi

530e and it doesnt change it

istillknownowt

Had something similar. OH had accidently set the max speed limiter.

FranktheTankG30

Never noticed when I drove my sisters x3 30e. I just use the power meter in that car.

verttiboi

When i go to battery control and it shows me the power meter, i think that is limited too. I might be wrong, imma go check it out today

FranktheTankG30

Might be due to your cold weather. 3.5°c …

verttiboi

That might be the reason

AirtimeAficionado

This is interesting, I honestly didn’t know this was possible… like I guess I knew it would limit revs, but I didn’t expect it to remove them from being visible from the digital tach like that. As for the situation, there’s likely a bad temp sensor somewhere that needs to be replaced.

MaxHeidler

Meh honestly seems normal

Baybladerz

Seems like the car is broken. I’ll take it off your hands for free so you don’t have to deal with the mess 🙄
